Long-time resident of St Joseph MO leaves a legacy of volunteering, hard work and loving family behind. Ernestina V. “Tina” Black passed on July 29th at the age of 92. Tina was born to Guadalupe and Refugio Lopez in Atchison KS on May 23, 1929. She married Robert Black on April 14th, 1956, raised three daughters while working in retail all her married life. Her family lived in Rockledge, FLA, and enjoyed many trips their TWA travel passes allowed over the years. Her favorite trip was to Rome, where she had a private audience with Pope Paul VI. For this devout Catholic, this was the experience of a lifetime. A very fashionable mother, her career as a buyer for Sears’ ladies departments benefited her three girls! After retiring from Sears, the St Joseph school district kitchens beckoned which suited her well. She spent countless hours volunteering for Cathedral Food Pantry, Hispanic Outreach, reading advocacy, translating, election days, church and community work. In 2004, she was honored by St Joseph as a Women of Excellence, and also named Volunteer of the Year by the Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St Joseph. In 2005 St Joe News Press deemed her 1 of 20 Women to Know! She relayed many stories about the individuals she helped. She loved to tell stories wherever she found an audience, exchanging lively accounts to family and friends who cherished her energy and warmth! She kept up with her Atchison alumni, read voraciously and spoiled her family cooking, loving and doing for them. Preceded in death by her parents, 9 siblings, including Josephine Guardado, Consuelo Olvera, she leaves behind three daughters, Marta (Tom) Curry of Wichita KS, Eva (Richard) Gilmore of St Joseph, MO, Mary (Richard) Pycior of Lee’s Summit, MO. Johnie Harold Stein, Jr., 74, Rosendale, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021.

He was born May 4, 1947 in Moberly, Missouri to Johnie and Dorothy (Wilson) Stein, Sr.

Johnie enjoyed fishing and guns, but most of all spending time with his family. He was a very giving person.

He was preceded in death by his son, Clint Ryan Stein; and his parents. Sharon Grace 85, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at her home. 

She was born June 14, 1936 in Elwood, KS, she graduated from Lafayette High School and Nursing School, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She married Bobby Grace in 1960, and they shared 61 years of marriage together. Sharon had an impressive nursing career that included working as a floor nurse at the St. Joseph "Sisters" Hospital, Director of Nursing at Carriage Square Health Care Center, and Office Nurse for Dr. Sharron Waggoner. She also worked as Missouri State Inspector, and a consultant and floor nurse at several nursing facilities in the St. Joseph Area. Sharon retired after 50 years of nursing at the age of 75, she loved nursing, and was a superior patient advocate. Sharon was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grand mother. She was firm, but fair, always there when her family needed her, from raising grandkids, for a time, to taking in a significant other after a serious accident, to helping her kids get back on their feet when needed. Sharon enjoyed reading, painting, and crafts, fishing, and camping in her younger years. She will be missed by us all. 

She was preceded in death by husband, Bobby Grace, son, Jeff Grace, mother, Anna Lora Turner, parents who raised her, Earl (Thelma) Erickson, and a brother, Mike Smith. 

Survivors include, daughters, Kim (Ronnie) Smith, and Barb (Jim) Weathermon of St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren, Amanda, William, Aaron, Ashley, Angie, Jaime, Sean, Dustin, Dylan, &amp; Elias, great grandchildren, Leo, Braxton, Lukas, Korbyn, Brooklyn, Aubrey, Toby, Lily, Ridge, Rylan, Connor, and Emma, numerous nieces, nephews &amp; great nieces &amp; nephews.

Sherry Lynn Spicer, 73, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St Joseph. 

She was born April 14, 1948 in St. Joseph, daughter of Darlene (Milbourn) and Ralph Gardner. She graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1966. She married Gale Spicer on June 1, 1970. Sherry worked at State Hospital, retiring after 32 years as Personnel Director. In her younger years, Sherry rode horses in rodeos. She loved to cook, traveling the country with her husband Gale, often in their RV. Sherry was the first lady in the country inducted to the Travelers Protective Association. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Donald Gardner and grandson, Josh Spicer. 

Survivors include, husband of 51 years, Gale Spicer of the home, sons, Stacy (Leigh) Spicer of Savannah, Darin (Angela) Spicer of St Joseph and Cory Spicer of Easton, MO, step-children, Kenny Spicer of St. Joseph, Paul (Diane) Spicer of Cameron, MO and Debbie Spicer of Columbia, MO, grandchildren, Dakota, Dillon, Bryan, Caleb, Brandon, Luke, Eric, Derek, Kerra and Hannah, great-grandchildren, Parker, Natalie, Nicholas and nephews, Mike and Mark Gardner.

Janice Marie Carriger, 63, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 in St. Joseph, MO. 

She was born September 30, 1957 in St. Joseph, daughter of Violet and Robert Alders. She graduated from Lafayette High School. She married Hubert "Dopie" Carriger. Janice worked at Sherwood Medical and St. Joe Frontier Casino as a custodian. Janice was our angel on earth. She was the epitome of kindness. She was kind to everyone, whether she knew you or not. Janice enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. Her beautiful yard reflected her love of flowers. Working in her yard, having her nails polished, and shopping (she loved her blouses) brought her tremendous joy. However, her family and grandchildren are what she lived for. 

Janice was preceded in death by father, Robert Lee Alders, mother, Violet Lucille Alders, sister, Carol Baker, brother, Rick Alders. 

Survivors include, husband, Hubert "Dopie" Carriger of the home, sons, Shannon and Jason Carriger, sisters, Brenda (Carroll) Bennett, Diana Hays and Betty (Chuck) Davis, brothers, Robert Jr., Danny, Mike and Clyde (Julie) Alders, all of St. Joseph, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Peggy Sue (Timme) Rahe, 87, of Hiawatha, died peacefully at the Hiawatha Hospital on Wednesday morning December 30, 2020.

Peggy was born in Kansas City, MO on July 30, 1933 and grew up in Linn, Kansas, the daughter of the late William (Bill) and Elsie (Hornbostel) Timme. She graduated from Linn High School in 1951. Peggy married Leonard Rahe on May 10, 1953, at Linn. He preceded her in death. They made Hiawatha their home nearly all of their married life. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha.

Peggy enjoyed sewing, reading, and was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. In her children’s younger years, she enjoyed attending their sporting events as well as any concerts, productions, and other activities. &nbsp;In later years she enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and as “GG” (Great Grandma) to her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons: Randy Rahe (Nola) of St. Augustine, FL, &nbsp;John Rahe (Heidi) of Rensselaer, IN, Dr. Brad Rahe (Megan) of Holton, KS; two daughters: Tammy Sisk (Scott) of Hiawatha, Sandy Lewis of St. Joseph, MO; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Due to restrictions on gatherings, a Memorial Service was moved to Friday, July 30th. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th&nbsp;St., Hiawatha, who is assisting the family.

Clyde Leroy Hahn, 76, of Cameron, Missouri, passed away Monday, July 26, 2021 at his home. 

He was born February 17, 1945 in Osborn, MO, son of Edith and John Clyde Hahn. He graduated from Osborn High School, class of 1963 and later attended Auctioneer School. Clyde served a short time in the U.S. Air Force, being discharged to come home to help on the family farm. He spent most of his life farming and drove a truck for Everett Quarries for many years. He also spent many years as an Auctioneer. Clyde enjoyed keeping a meticulous yard and working in his garden. He also enjoyed picking and grinning on his guitar and spending time with his grandkids. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Estell Carrel, sister, Lois Beechner and half-brother, John Hahn. 

Survivors include, son, Jason (Courtney) Hahn of Cameron, MO, daughter, Marlo (Dale) Crabb of Kidder, MO, former wife, Rosemary Hahn of Kidder, MO, sisters, Pauline Kolb of Cameron, MO, Edith Kay (Doug) Marshall of Cameron, MO, Martha (Larry) Baker of Cameron, MO, grandchildren, Ethan and Emma Crabb and Izzy Hahn and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hahn has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Shirley Ann Bunse, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021.

She was born June 16, 1935 in St. Joseph to Robert and Mildred (LaFavor) Hayes. She was a 1953 graduate of Lafayette High School.

Shirley married Donald L. Bunse on February 9, 1954. They later divorced.

She worked at Westab and then Mead Products for 30-plus years. Shirley loved reading mystery novels, with James Patterson being her favorite author. She also loved Star Trek. Shirley was an avid supporter of our troops and Wounded Warriors. She especially loved her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Hayes and Mildred Slibowski; her former husband, Don; brother, Norman Hayes; and infant sister, Gloria Hayes.

Survivors include her daughter, Diana Steeby (David); two grandsons, Eric Steeby (Jessica) and Cory Steeby; several great-grandchildren; sister, Judy Howard (Jim); sister-in-law, Nancie Hayes; several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Graveside Farewell Services and Interment 10:00 A.M. Friday, Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Kidney Foundation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Paul Glennon Buckman 84 of St Joseph, MO passed away Monday, July 26, 2021.

He was born October 11, 1936 in Indian Creek, MO, son of the late Dorothy (Finnigan) and Claude Buckman. Paul married Alice Johns on June 5, 1954 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, they shared 67 years together.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Ron Neely and brothers Joey, Tom, Jim and Carl Buckman.

Survivors include wife Alice Buckman of the home, children: Paula Neely, Lynn (Rick) Palma, Brent (Janet) Buckman, Brian Buckman and Kristy (Tim) Owens. Nicholas “Nick” Joseph Seufert, 40, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday, July 26, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. In keeping with his loving and generous spirit, the family would like to acknowledge that Nick’s final act was to give the most precious gift as an organ and tissue donor. He was born December 5, 1980 in St. Joseph, son of Judith and Herman Seufert. He graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School, Class of 2000. Nick’s childhood was molded by many different families that adopted him into their own. He relished spending time with this exceptionally large circle of family and friends. He was a father, brother, and supportive friend to all who knew him.

He married his high school sweetheart, Katherine "Kat" Guyer at St. James Catholic Church in St. Joseph on October 10, 2020. Their marriage combined the pride of both the North and South sides. It was a playful joke among the family that Kat changed this Northside boy into a “238er”. One of Nick’s greatest life accomplishments was becoming a father to his one-year-old son, Patrick. Patrick is a perfect mix of both parents’ personalities but those eyes are all daddy Nick’s and he also has that ornery smile!

Following high school, he worked with his dad as a commercial and residential painter. He later worked at Cathedral of St. Joseph School and was currently employed by the St. Joseph School District at Lafayette High School as a building Engineer.

Nick was an avid KC Chiefs and Royals fan and loved attending concerts. Like his father, Herman, Nick was often the first on the dance floor with his wife and son. He embodied his father’s contagious spirit whenever he entered a room. Nick, again following in his father’s footsteps, was a 4th degree Knight. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus, Council 571 and currently at St. Francis Council 16525. He and his wife, Kat were active members at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Nick was preceded in death by father, Herman Joseph Seufert Jr., mother, Judith Seufert, infant sister, Mariella Seufert, sister, Paula Schermerhorn, friend Jamie Simmons, and close family friend Carol Wright.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2021 at St. Francis Xavier Church. A Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church led by Father Joseph Totton and Father Al Ebach, Celebrants. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Following services, Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Oleta Punzo, 85, of St. Joseph, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 27, 2021.&nbsp; Oleta was born January 5, 1936 in Rock Port, MO, to Jacob Holland and Madge (Stafford).

She was married to Robert Browning and he passed away on July 4, 1994.&nbsp; She then married Charles Punzo and he passed away on October 8, 2018.&nbsp; Also preceding her in death were her parents;&nbsp; daughter Janet; and step-grandson Dylan Hill.

Survivors include a son Ronald Browning; granddaughter Talissa Browning; and a step-daughter Cherie Phillips (Danny); several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Oleta was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Joseph.&nbsp; She loved chatting with her friends and going out to eat with her family.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.&nbsp; Services will be Friday, July 30, 2021 at 10:00 am at the funeral home.&nbsp; Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Kenneth "Kenny" Belcher, 55, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday July 26, 2021.&nbsp; Kenny was born June 3, 1966 in St. Joseph, MO.&nbsp; He is the son of Harold K. and Florence Stiens Belcher.

He graduated from Central High School, and attended Hillyard Technical School.&nbsp;&nbsp; He worked at Gray Manufacturing for the last 26 years.&nbsp; Kenny loved his friends and family, and was always there for people when they needed a hand.&nbsp; He enjoyed riding motorcycles, racing rc cars, and all that nature has to offer.&nbsp; He especially enjoyed walking around Krug Park and it's trails.&nbsp; He had a kind and generous spirit, and will be missed by all who knew him.

Kenny was preceded in death by his father and infant sister Jessica.&nbsp; Kenny is survived by his mother Florence, sister Melissa (David) Hart, nephew Shane, and niece Holly.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM on Friday July 30, 2021, followed immediately by a memorial service at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.

Carrol Wayne Goacher, 76, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Monday, July 26, 2021 at Wathena Healthcare.

Carrol was born on March 10, 1945 in Blair, Kansas to John and Dorthea (Juhl) Goacher.  He lived most of his life in Elwood, Kansas and moved to California for a number of years where he worked in maintenance for a nursing home before returning to Wathena, Kansas. 

Carrol married Sharon Willits.  She preceded him in death in 2015.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

He is survived by a son; Mike (Peg) Goacher of Wathena, Kansas, 2  grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carrol was cremated under the direction of the Harman Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena, Kansas.  There will be no public visitation or services.

Teresa Marie Cain, 53, Maryville, Missouri, passed away Monday, July 26, 2021.

A native of Iowa, she was born May 14, 1968 to Wallace and Geraldine (Williams) Klakken.

Teresa graduated from Bedford High School and went to Northwest Missouri State University (NWMSU). Teresa met Rob Cain at college, then accepted his proposal three years later at a football game. They married August 3, 1991 at Lake of Three Fires in Bedford, Iowa and a year later they welcomed a beautiful daughter, Brandie Nicole born June 22, 1992. Family meant more to her than anything else in the world. While her daughter was growing up, she would go to all of Brandie’s dance recitals, beauty pageants and school concerts cheering her on. Teresa loved her two grandsons, Koltlen and Kallen. She and Rob would take them on vacations and spoil them with adventure. Teresa enjoyed going to family gatherings, helping to prepare the food. Her favorite hobbies were collecting depression ware and going to flea markets and antique stores trying to find a great buy. Teresa enjoyed watching and listening to NWMSU Bearcat Football games.

Many people were touched by Teresa’s generosity and commitment to help any and all she could. She will be missed by many, including the family and friends she held so dear.

She was a member of the Gravity Christian Church, Nodaway County Fair Board, River Bluff Iron Man Association and Pyrotechnic Fireworks.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Klakken.

Survivors include husband, Rob; daughter, Brandie Cain; grandsons, Koltlen McClarnon, Kallen Mildward; mother, Geraldine Klakken; sister, Cheryl Adkins; brother, Marvin Klakken; numerous extended family.

They married August 3, 1991 at Lake of Three Fires in Bedford, Iowa and a year later they welcomed a beautiful daughter, Brandie Nicole born June 22, 1992. Family meant more to her than anything else in the world. While her daughter was growing up, she would go to all of Brandie’s dance recitals, beauty pageants and school concerts cheering her on. Teresa loved her two grandsons, Koltlen and Kallen. She and Rob would take them on vacations and spoil them with adventure. Teresa enjoyed going to family gatherings, helping to prepare the food. Her favorite hobbies were collecting depression ware and going to flea markets and antique stores trying to find a great buy. Teresa enjoyed watching and listening to NWMSU Bearcat Football games. Many people were touched by Teresa’s generosity and commitment to help any and all she could. She will be missed by many, including the family and friends she held so dear. She was a member of the Gravity Christian Church, Nodaway County Fair Board, River Bluff Iron Man Association and Pyrotechnic Fireworks. She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Klakken. Katharina “Katie” Hartig, 93, St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 26, 2021.

The daughter of Georg and Margareta (Konnerth) Rower, Mrs. Hartig was born on April 8, 1928, in Baierdorf, Romania. Katharina’s family fled to Austria in 1944 during World War II. Life was hard during the post-war years, but eventually things got better. In 1950, she met Michael Hartig, her future husband, who immigrated to the United States in 1952 with his two brothers. The couple stayed in touch over the years and in 1955, Katharina came to the U.S. and became Michael’s wife. That union lasted over 50 years. Michael passed away on August 4, 2005. The couple was blessed with a son, Mike Stephen Hartig, currently living in Houston, Texas.

Over the years, Katharina helped her husband on the farm. Later she worked for J.C. Penney for 10 years in the sewing room. In 1980, Katharina joined the American National Bank and worked there until she retired in 1993.

Katharina was very devoted in her love for the Lord, and was a devoted wife, a very caring and loving mother, a selfless servant and loyal friend. She was always grateful that her son had the opportunity to obtain a college degree.

In addition to her husband, Michael, Katharina was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Margareta Rower Schmith and Maria Rower Berger; brother, Georg Rower. She leaves as survivors her beloved son, Mike Stephen; sister, Anna Rower Zirwig; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Katharina was a member of Zion United Church of Christ for 28 years and joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1983. There she served on the Stewardship Board and the Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Ruth Circle and the Mary Martha Circle.

Tim Grider, 74, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021, at his home in Helena, MO. He was born March 12, 1947 in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Allen and Lorine (Stucki) Grider. 

He grew up on a dairy farm in Helena, MO. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1965 and began farming. He married Marilyn Wilkinson on March 15, 1968. They were blessed with two sons and shared 53 years of marriage living in Helena.

Tim was a retired farmer, past President of Missouri Pork Producers Association, 50-year member of the Helena Lions Club, and former member of the Helena Volunteer Fire Department. Tim loved his family and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald Grider; and brother-in-law, Marion Tritten.

Bernie (Barbosa) Ceglenski, 76, Helena, Missouri, died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

What a blessing to have such a wonderful person in our lives! Bernie was the youngest of 12 children born to Mauricio and Pachita (Cruz) Barbosa on June 11, 1945. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School in 1964.

She married Mike Ceglenski on January 25, 1964 and moved to Helena, Mo. in 1984.

She was an excellent homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and new great-grandson. Bernie was an excellent cook who enjoyed having family and friends over for dinner. She loved dancing, playing cards, and her church.

She was show director for St. Patrick’s Mexican Fiesta for many years and delighted in teaching kids numerous Mexican dances.

Bernie was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Society and Legion of Mary. She especially enjoyed cooking and serving for funeral dinners. She enjoyed laughing and being with the other ladies who served the dinners.

She was a very caring person who touched many people. A typical one-hour trip to the grocery store lasted three to four hours due to the many people she knew.

Words cannot express how much she will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, E.C., Merced and Rick Barbosa; and three sisters, Christina Torres, Mary Helen White, and Lupe Cathcart.

Gary Lyle Judd 68, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday July 24, 2021.

He graduated from San Lorenzo High School, in California, and worked at Denny's restaurant for 20 years, and Houlihan's restaurant for 10 years, as a Cook. He was an avid fisherman, who enjoyed watching drag car racing, playing video games, music and his motorcycle, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Otto "Toot" Moser, 84, of Oregon, MO, formerly of St. Joseph, died July 15, 2021.&nbsp; Otto was born January 15, 1937 in Oregon to John J. and Iva S. (Schank) Moser.

He enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and Matt Dillon.&nbsp; His nickname Toot was given to him in childhood and it stuck with him for the rest of his life.

Survivors include a son Jason Moser (Sybil); grandson Alex Moser; two sisters Marilyn Garber and Carolyn Skilling; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother John; sisters Vesta Delp, Iola Moore, and Velma Moser.

Laura Margaret Bowen, 99, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2021.

She was born August 8, 1921 in Bolckow, Missouri to John and Blanche (Wallace) Carpenter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Sam, JR, and Wally Carpenter; husband, Lowell K. Bowen; daughter, Kathleen Staples and husband, Al; daughter-in-law, Karen Bowen.

Survivors include son, Wallace Bowen of Kimberling City, MO and daughter, Beverly Wedlock Daugherty and her husband, Carl, of Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Nathan Wedlock and wife, Emily, of Richmond, VA;, Ian Wedlock and wife, Candace, of Sevierville, TN, Shannon Copeland and husband, Justin, of St. Joseph, MO, Wes Bowen and wife, Megan, of Springfield, MO, Josh Bowen and wife, Stephanie, of Olathe, KS, Geoff Staples and wife, Serena, of Sequim, WA; sister-in-law, Diane Carpenter of Rock Port, MO; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Laura was a 1938 graduate of Bolckow High School. She attended two years of junior college in St. Joseph and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in administration from Northwest Missouri State University. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Wyatt Park Baptist Church.

Laura’s favorite thing to do was to serve in her church. She delivered the Sunday School message to nursing home and children’s mental health facilities for many years. She and her husband were both deacons at the church and served in many capacities. When her children were grown and her in-laws which lived with them had passed, she finished her teaching degrees and taught 4th grade at Hawthorne Elementary School until she retired.

She continued tutoring students in her home until she was in her 80s. She also housed numerous foreign students while they attended Missouri Western. She decided to start a Christmas decorating business after retirement, which gave her an outlet for the creative side of her. She moved into Vintage Park Assisted Living at the age of 84 and remained there until 2019. She considered any place she found herself to be a place where the Lord had placed her to serve others. She started card games after dinner for residents and played dominoes until she was 97. She was an extremely generous person and loved leaving candy and goodies outside of her room for anyone passing by. She continued loving to play with all of her great-grandchildren that lived in town, teaching them new skills – even sewing. She loved to sing the Baptist hymns and listen as often as possible. Her favorite was “I Come to the Garden Alone,” which appropriately was the last song she listened to.

She has left a legacy of service and generosity that will be passed on for generations. She will be missed.

She continued loving to play with all of her great-grandchildren that lived in town, teaching them new skills – even sewing. She loved to sing the Baptist hymns and listen as often as possible. Her favorite was “I Come to the Garden Alone,” which appropriately was the last song she listened to.She has left a legacy of service and generosity that will be passed on for generations. Stephen R. McAllister, 83, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021.

He was born in Bunker, Missouri on June 2, 1938 to Charles and Edith (Jackson) McAllister. Stephen married Rhoda Alice Bening August 2, 1958.

He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1956. After high school he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, achieving the level of Sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Steve then married the love of his life, Rhoda, and moved to Lawrence to start a family and attend the University of Kansas. He graduated in 1963 and remained a devoted Jayhawk fan for the rest of his life.

Steve began a 50+ year career in the banking industry and worked his way up from a teller to an officer, owner, and director. After 5 years, Steve moved his family to Lucas, Kansas, where he was a leader in the community for 25 years. He served as the mayor, a volunteer EMT, and commissioner of the K-18 Cookie Baseball Association, among numerous other community efforts while in Lucas. He was a self-taught painter, enjoyed fishing, and was the baseball coach for his son’s baseball teams.

Upon selling the Farmers State Bank in Lucas to the Pony Express Community Bank in St. Joseph, Missouri, Steve and Rhoda moved to St. Joseph and became pillars in the community during the last 22 years of his life. Steve was an active member of Ashland United Methodist Church and, while his health allowed, the St. Joseph Open Door Food Kitchen.

Steve was a loyal and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and loved nothing more than his family. Family meant everything to Steve and he continued to faithfully support and love them his entire life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jim McAllister.

Survivors include his wife, Rhoda McAllister; sons, Stephen (Suzanne Valdez), Paul (Katie Moses), Tom (Lemuria Citi); grandchildren, Emma Lumpe, Mara McAllister, August McAllister, Fiona McAllister, Brett Carey (Cierra), Isabelle Carey, Aidan McAllister, Juliette McAllister, Jackson McAllister, Sofia McAllister; sisters, Pat Cook, Charla Pryor (Jim); brother-in-law, Robert Bening (Irene); sister-in-law, Madalene McAllister; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Farewell Services and Public Livestream 2:00 P.M. Friday, Ashland United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Ned Lynn Peterson, 72, of Morrill, passed away unexpectedly at home July 22, 2021.

He was born November 30, 1948, to Carl and Naomi Syring Peterson and grew up around the Manhattan/Randolph area and graduated from Blue Valley High School in Randolph with the class of 1966.

Ned served his country in the U.S. Air Force, serving some of his time In Thailand.&nbsp; After his discharge from the military, he spent most of his life working as a diesel mechanic.&nbsp; After retiring as a mechanic, he went to work at Sac &amp; Fox Casino for three years until Covid forced a second retirement. &nbsp;He was still keeping busy with the odds and ends and was able to be at home until the end.

In 1983, he was blessed with a daughter Catherine Marie.&nbsp; In June of 1992, he married Pat Keener with the marriage later ending in divorce.&nbsp; In March 2011, he met Becky Townsend.&nbsp; They enjoyed the next ten years together going to auctions and sales, camping, fishing, and just enjoying life together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Marilyn Bletscher and Norrene Kern, two brothers:&nbsp; Lloyd and Dennis; two brothers in law:&nbsp; Kenneth Kern and George Hovey.

Ned is survived by his wife Becky Townsend of the home, daughter Catherine Juel (Justin) of Dodge City, KS, brothers:&nbsp; Carl of Morrill, Donald (Peggy) of Dodge City, Ronald (Diana) of Fredericksburg, VA, and sister Vonda Hovey of Dodge City; two grandchildren:&nbsp; Brian &amp; Emmalea, both of Dodge City, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned with graveside services planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021, at East Templin Cemetery, Alta Vista, KS.

Sheila Jo (Hill) Phillips, 59 of St. Joseph, MO, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2021 at a local health care facility.

She was born on December 16, 1961 in St. Joseph and was a graduate of Stewartsville High School.

Sheila spent the majority of her working career as a nursing home medical technician.

Sheila loved spending time with her family and friends. She was very active in sports with her sons' traveling teams. Family gatherings were very important to her as well as sewing and caring for her pets.

She was preceded in death by her father; Dennis Hill.

Surviving family members include her sons; Alex (Moriah) and Sean Phillips, grandson; Boston Phillips, brother; Jamie (Dorie) Hill, sister; Shelley Clizer, mother; Frances Murphy and step-father;&nbsp; Mike Murphy, two nephews and one niece.

Per her wishes, Ms. Phillips has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. No visitation or services are currently scheduled.
