James&nbsp; D. "Jim" Gossett, 75, of St. Joseph,&nbsp; passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

He &nbsp;was born to James E. and Madelyn L. Gossett on June 8, 1946.&nbsp;

He was a graduate of Lafayette High School.&nbsp; Jim &nbsp;was married to his wife Beverly for 55 years.&nbsp;

Jim &nbsp;served in the U.S. Army and went to Vietnam in 1966 - 1968.&nbsp; He completed the electrical program with IBEW 545.&nbsp;

He worked there for 20 years.&nbsp; James went to work with the St. Joseph School District for 23 years, retiring in 2008.

Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 359 and the Eagles Lodge.

He enjoyed all sports, bowling teams, golf buddies and playing cards with his friends.&nbsp; His biggest joy was his granddaughter, Courtney Gossett.&nbsp; He was so proud of her and she meant everything to him.

James is survived by his wife Beverly, son V.E. Gossett, granddaughter Courtney Gossett (fiance` Cody Fisk), brother-in-law Jerry (Marna) Milbourn, and sister-in-law Terrie (Tim) Creviston.

Mr. Gossett has been cremated under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.

Per his request, there will be no visitation or services.

Sylvia M. Wallner, 97, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away September 10, 2021.

Sylvia was born January 6, 1924 in Stanley, Tasmania, Australia, the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Muir) Horton.

She joined the WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air-force) from 1942 to 1944. On a ship from Australia in 1946 she came to the United States of America and became a citizen five years later in 1951.

On May 15, 1959, she married Markus Wallner. The couple lived in St. Joseph all their married life.

Mark and Sylvia loved to travel. They took many trips to Las Vegas, two to Australia, and one to Germany. They also loved air shows and traveled to many around the country.

They had an amazing garden at their home and shared with the family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack; and husband of 57 years, Mark.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Merlene Jones of Plattsmouth, NE, Dianne (Dennis) Gillespie, of Omaha, NE, and Merle (Pat) Derry, of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Bert (Shirley) Horton of Tasmania, and Max (Judy) Horton of South Australia; and many nieces and nephews.

Joy was born July 11, 1932 in Pattonsburg, MO, to Dr. Jerome and Elsie (Ireland) McCulley.

She had worked for many years as the office manager for K-Mart in St. Joseph.&nbsp; Joy was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son Kyle Johnson and wife Shannon and grandson Canyon Johnson.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Bill was born on July 24, 1928 in Troy, Kansas to Russell and Mary (Charles) Triplett.&nbsp;

Bill is a member of the Troy Christian Church and the Volunteer Fire Department of Troy. Bill was an entrepreneur, business man and farm owner, operating Triplett Produce Company and Triplett and Gaul Feed Lot.&nbsp;

He married Pat Dutton on December 21, 1948 in Troy, Kansas. She survives at The Willows in Wathena, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a son Russell Andrew “Drew” Triplett.&nbsp;

On June 24, 1924, she was born to Edgar and Vera (Shaffer) Taylor in St. Joseph, Missouri.

After graduating from Benton High School in 1942, she married John Walter Rejnin on January 11, 1946. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage prior to his death in 1999.

She was a member of the Ashland United Methodist Church, Carnegie Culture Club and the Alpha Aletha Girls Club.

Carolyn enjoyed being outside and watching the beauty of nature. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the MU Tigers, KC Royals and KC Chiefs. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Beverly Taylor; son, Michael Rejnin.

Survivors include daughters, Cathy Deal (Charles) of Mt. Vernon, Texas and Jo Duke (Tom) of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Carla, Rachel, Eva, Alice, Justin, Eric, Jennifer, Sarah, Rebecca; 17 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; three great-great-grandchildren.

Maria “Jody” Cary, 48, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021 after a brief illness with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia.

On September 6, 1973 she was born in St. Joseph, Missouri to George and Betty (Kersey) Cary.

Maria was a proud graduate of Central High School Class of 1991. She attended Ashland United Methodist and Caring First churches. She was a volunteer counselor at Camp Galilee. Maria worked for many years at KQ2 and more recently, she was a Paparazzi Jewelry Consultant.

She will be remembered by many as a very caring, accepting person with a huge heart and a smile for everyone she met. Friends recall how she was available to so many in their time of need as a supportive listener. Maria could light up a room and will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her sisters, Betty Ann Fisher (Greg) of St. Joseph, Kathy Meyer (Kelly) of Oregon, Missouri, Debi Ford (Terry) of Summerville, South Carolina; cousin, Annette Salsbury of Guilford, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Tinker.

Daniel Lee Schroff, 41, of St Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021 in St. Joseph, as result of an accident. 

He was born August 13, 1980 in St. Joseph, son of Carol and Louis Schroff. He attended Lafayette High School. Danny owned and operated D&amp;D Handyman Services. He enjoyed fishing, building motorcycles and tacos. He loved spending time with his children. He had a great memory and was a great story teller, never met a stranger and loved helping others. Danny was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church. 

He was preceded in death by father, Louis Schroff, step father, Richard "Teach" Sears, sister, Destiny Sears-Orcutt and brother, Harley Sears. 

Survivors include, wife, Ashley Schroff of the home, his mother, Carol Sears of St. Joseph, children, Rosemary, Grace, Carolann, and Adalyne, siblings, Jimmy, Scott, Sarah, Stephanieann, Dakota, Desire, and Deacon, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Russel Douglas Cain 96, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021 in a Saint Joseph, MO., health care center. 

He was born April 20, 1925 in Albany, MO, son of the late Lenor and Elmer Cain. He served in the United States Army and is a veteran of the World War II. Russel was the owner operator of the Cains Garage. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping, and he was of the Methodist faith.

He was born September 27, 1952 in St. Joseph to Lester and Naomi “Dee” (Schwope) Herbert. He graduated from North Andrew High School in 1972.

George married Cynthia Jo Matthias on June 1, 1991. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the Laborers Union for over 40 years. George enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Missouri Tigers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bernie Gallagher, Danny Herbert, Richard Herbert, and Twila Seek; and his parents-in-law, Fred and Dorothy Matthias.

She married John Bravo on June 13, 1969. Karen retired from Lowe's. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and fishing. She was the great protector of many stray cats. Karen loved her family, and her very special people called her Mimi. She was a member of Bible Baptist Temple. 

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, sister and her husband, Donna Meade, sister, Sue Burks, and infant brother, Bobby Caton.

Mary Rose Ragsdale 93, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, was called to heaven Sunday, September 19, 2021. She passed peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends. 

She was born February 14, 1928 in Gentry County, MO, then moved to King City, MO with her family, where she graduated from High School in 1946. She then attended Gard's Business College in St. Joseph. Mrs. Ragsdale had been an Executive Secretary for Westab - Mead Products in St. Joseph for 36 years, retiring from there in 1991. She later worked part time for 15 years as a secretary for the McCarthy Baptist Church. She was a member of the Patee Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph. She married Joseph G. Ragsdale on September 25, 1949, and they lived most of their lives in St. Joseph until he passed away Setp. 22, 1997. 

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, parents: Harry &amp; Faye Carson, and a step son-Gary Lynn. 

Survivors include: son, Dennis Carson (Ann) Ragsdale, daughter, Diane Gail Ragsdale both of Saint Joseph, MO, 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and a brother, Paul (Marilyn) Carson of St. Joseph, MO.

Patrick Michael McMillin, 67, passed away Friday, September 3, 2021, at Marquis Plaza

Regency in Las Vegas. He was born July 10, 1954, in Berchtesgaden, Germany.

Patrick was adopted in 1956 by William R. McMillin and his then wife, Eyvonne, while they were stationed in England with the USAF. He spent much of his young childhood on military bases in several states including Hawaii and his teen years in both California and Colorado.

Patrick graduated high school in Fairplay, CO, in 1972. He received his AS degree at the Florida Institute of Technology. Pat then transferred to the University of Washington where he graduated in 1977 with a BA in Biological and Physical Sciences, with an emphasis in Oceanography. Later, Patrick received his Masters of Science at Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA and attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA. Patrick was enrolled in ROTC while attending the U of W and upon graduation was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for 20 years assigned to the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and he rose to the rank of Commander.

Patrick was actively involved in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He served on the USS Kinkaid, the USS Albert David, the USS Wabash and his final deployment was as Executive Officer Afloat on the USS Brewton. He completed his naval career as Resource Manager of the J-8 Directorate, Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. During his career Patrick was awarded numerous medals including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, 3 Navy Commendation Medals, 3 Navy Achievement Medals and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. 

Whenever on leave, Patrick traveled visiting family, friends and many different countries. He enjoyed playing golf, bicycling and experiencing different cultures. Patrick faced many challenges during his lifetime including a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) he received from a bicycling accident in 1995. His fortitude, grit and perseverance helped him through the 2 years of rehab relearning many basic physical functions and regaining his independence. Patrick focused on having a positive attitude usually laced with humor. His recovery was a remarkable journey that included resuming his love for running and practicing daily yoga. He was proud of finishing 37 marathons in 17 states during his lifetime. Patrick’s favorite motto after the accident was BTFL-TNTF: Better To Finish Last Than Not To Finish.

Patrick was an active member of the Desert Spring United Methodist Church in Las Vegas where he enjoyed bible study, playing in the bell choir and performing trumpet specials. Patrick always put God, family and his country above himself. He loved to take pictures of his adventures to share with others. Those pictures reflect a rich life full of unique experiences. Patrick cherished his family, shipmates, church, neighbors and all the friends he had made near and far.

He was married to Kathleen Schaeffer in 1987 and later divorced. Patrick is survived by his brother, Terry McMillin of Atchison, KS; his sisters, Sharon (Martin) McCallie of Edna, KS; Jeannette (Noel) Rueb of Atchison, KS, and his nephews, James McCallie and Jacob McCallie. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Sarah McMillin.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Desert Spring United Methodist Church with Rev. David Devereaux officiating. Interment will be held Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS.

Al Flores, 90, died Thursday, September 16, 2021 at his home in Dodge City.

He was born January 23, 1931 at Meade, Kansas, the son of Pablo and 
Cecilia (Molina) Flores.&nbsp; He graduated high school in Dalhart, Texas, 
attended college at Pratt Community College and received his Bachelors 
from Denver University.&nbsp; He served in the United States Marine Corps 
during the Korean War.&nbsp; He was a longtime Dodge City resident where he 
worked for Davis Salsbury Floorcovering as a floorcovering specialist 
for over 55 years until retiring.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 4th
 Degree Member of Knights of Columbus Council 2955, Life Member of VFW 
Post 1714, Life Member of American Legion Post 47 and Esquibel Brothers 
Chapter GI Forum all in Dodge City.&nbsp; He also was as a driver of foster 
children for St. Francis.

On February 26, 1961 he married Caroline “Nina” Duran at Sacred Heart
 Church in Pratt.&nbsp; They later divorced but remained very close.

Survivors include: his daughter, Angela Flores and husband Tom 
Rebein, Dodge City; his son, Alan Flores and wife Teresa, St. Joseph, 
Missouri; 3 grandchildren, Megan Kitts, Kayla Keeshan and husband Zac 
and Courtney Flores; 4 great grandchildren, Caden Rebein, Brooklyn 
Rebein, Rowen Keeshan and Huxley Keeshan; a brother, Richard Flores and 
wife Mary, Mulvane, Kansas; 2 sisters, Tillie Absher, Wetumka, Oklahoma 
and Jane Park and husband Laurence, Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Mel, Vincent, Frank and Paul Flores.

pm Sunday, September 19, 2021 both at the Cathedral of Our Lady of

Charles Francis Helmstetter, 70, passed away early on Monday, Sept. 16th, 2021 at home in Troy, KS after battling cancer for nearly two years. While in the Marines Charles served in Vietnam, Okinawa and the Philippines. While stationed in the Philippines’ he met his soon to be wife Lucy Durante. They were married on Aug. 12, 1971, at St. Charles Church, Troy, KS and were fortunate enough to Celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary this past August. Charles worked for 29 years at Midwest Grain Products. He was a member of the St. Benedicts Church, Bendena. Survivors include his wife Lucy, of the home, Mother Rose Helmstetter, Denton, KS, two sons Erik (Laura) Helmstetter, Los Angeles, CA, and Mark Helmstetter, Atchison, KS, a daughter in law, Stephanie Helmstetter, two brothers Tom and Jerry Helmstetter, Denton, KS, two sisters Janie Helmstetter, Wichita, KS and Patty Meranda, Plano, TX, and seven grandchildren; Aidan, Madison, Makenzie, Avery, Rose, Gene, and Evan.

Shirley Ann Frakes 84, of St. Joseph, MO passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday morning, September 16, 2021 at home in St. Joseph, MO. 

She was born March 23, 1937 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Raymond and Goldie Heitman. She was the owner and operator of Frakes 4F Tavern, she also worked at Whitaker Cable, Snorkel, and Babbling Brooks Candles. She loved to cook, garden, fish, and spending time with her family and friends. She also loved animals She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. 

Shirley was preceded in death by husband, Eddie Frakes, her parents, grandson Jacob Bullimore, stepchildren: Steven Frakes, Naomi Herbert, and Teresa Hernandez, brothers, Rex and Ronald Heitman, and twin daughters, Edith Ann &amp; Tina Celeste Frakes. 

Survivors include daughters, Carla (Steve) Bullimore, Lakewood, WA, Rebecca (Joseph) Doolan grandchildren, Maxwell, Mathilda, and Hilary Bullimore, Kaitlyn and Claire Doolan and great grandson, Uriah Bullimore, as well as several step grandchildren.

Herschel E. Hancock passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

He was born on January 3, 1931 in Mount Moriah, MO, to Ora and Ruth (Moss) Hancock. He had 13 siblings.

Herschel joined the Army at age 17 and served 9 years. He achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class and retired with 31 years in civil service. He married Dorothy Marshall on August 31, 1952. They had 3 children together, Douglas, Rhonda and Pam. Douglas and Rhonda predeceased him.

He married for a second time to Juanita Orndorff on March 3, 1986. Herschel said he was blessed to have been allowed to know and love such a precious child of God. He gained a daughter, Tamma Lane, through the marriage. Juanita passed away on February 15, 2018.

Herschel was a very devoted man of faith.

He was also preceded in death by 9 siblings.

Survivors include his sister, Mary Frazier; daughters, Pam Swift and Tamma Lane (Larry); grandsons, Matt King (Taylor), Eric Havens; granddaughter, Crystal Salsbury; and great-granddaughter, Isabella Havens.

She was born March 12, 1927, in Dearborn, Missouri to Alan and Lela (Finney) Coker.

Frances married Louis L. “Speck” Prescher November 27, 1948. He preceded her in death December 31, 2009.

She was a former member of Ebenezer Methodist Church.

Frances enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, and canning. She was an extremely hard worker and was always involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Steven Louis Prescher; siblings, Maxine Stanton, Marg Mullen, Bill Coker, Diz Coker, Ann Curran, Betty Lou Ellis, Dorothy Coker, and Harold Coker.
