Command Sergeant Major, A. Dean Tollefson, passed away Monday, May 15 at the age of 85 due to complications of Covid and his November 19, 2022 Traumatic Brain Injury. He was born January 29, 1938 at the Horton Hospital to Clarence and Clara (Torkelson) Tollefson of Willis, Kansas.

Known as the Noisy Norwegian, he created numerous smiles with his warm greetings and conversations. He filled hearts with hope as he spread his daily words of wisdom and notable quotes: “Every day is a good day, just some are better than others.” “The Lord won’t give you more than you can handle.” Always eager to lend a hand, a shoulder, an ear … he served others throughout his life.

He served his country from July 7, 1955 to January 29, 1998 through his service in the U.S. Army and the Kansas Army National Guard. He was elected into the Order of Saint Barbara, a military honor society for distinguished Artillerymen on November 20, 1982. His military honors include Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), the Army Achievement Medal, The Army Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (with 3 oak leaf clusters), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (3 hour glass devices), the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with numeral 3 and Army Service Ribbon. At his 1998 retirement, a Staff Sergeant at the time (Robert Herlinger) described the retiring Command Sergeant Major Tollefson as “always putting the soldier before himself and finding the rose in everyone.” His soldiers often comment on his guidance and leadership molding great men, as well as great soldiers. Patriotism and the role of the People in our government were important topics for him. He lived to serve and stand with the common man and encourage the common man’s active involvement in our government.&nbsp;

He graduated as Salutatorian from Willis High School in 1956 behind his Valedictorian sweetheart, Peggy (Tobiason) Tollefson. He obtained his Associates degree from Highland Community College in May 1974. The childhood sweethearts, Dean and his devoted ex-wife, Peggy (Tobiason) Tollefson raised 5 children (Doug, Denise, Travis, Robin and Ryan) during their 42 year marriage and have treasured the memories and years with his 3 children, 3 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.&nbsp;

He served his clients at the Noisy Norwegian’s Nook through his Insurance Agency, accounting and tax services and enjoyed his years as a Rural US Postal Office Mail Carrier. In fact, he proudly enjoyed using 5 hours on a 3 hour mail route, leaving time to check on elderly families and friends. During his final years he enjoyed his work with Howard Auction Company and then LG Auction Company. He coached Little League Baseball, served more than 60 years in the Lions Club, was Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America and was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Everest. His senior years were blessed with conversations and kinship at Gary Shears Auto Repair Shop and Larry Chestnut’s Barber Shop.

He was an avid sports fan and followed the Hiawatha High School Redskins/Redmen through many seasons, tournaments and State Championships. His love of math and numbers led him to his special talent of timing and documenting the approach speed of pole vaulters and jumpers at the Kansas State High School Track Meet. Always a character and a friend to all, he usually would answer the question “how are you?” with “Better than yesterday.”

He is survived by his children Douglas Dean Tollefson, Denise Diane Tollefson, MD and Travis Tate (Jamie Funamura, MD) Tollefson, MD. &nbsp;Dean’s Grandchildren: Robin Diane Malloy, Ryan Douglas (Amber) Tollefson and Theo TateTollefson. Great Grandchildren: Jalen and Justice Malloy, Sydney, Ashlyn and Kristopher Tollefson and his Great Great Granddaughter born November 15, 2022 just 4 days before his Traumatic Brain Injury, she is Amora Rae the daughter of his beloved first great granddaughter, Sydney Nicole Tollefson. He had great pride in his Norwegian heritage and has imprinted that pride upon each of his descendants. Uff da!

He is also survived by his Sister Linda (Robert) Fee and nieces Exzondria Rodvelt and Lachelle (Shannon) Hartley. His brother’s children: Karen (Douglas) Tollefson-Foye and Troy (Amy) Tollefson.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence Arthur Tollefson and Clara Mae (Torkelson) Tollefson, his brother Daryl and Daryl’s beloved wife Donna Tollefson. His grandparents were Tonnes and Ella Mae Torkelson &amp; Christopher and Martha Tollefson.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Dean's Eternal Life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church, north of Everest.&nbsp; Inurnment was on the family lot at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, nearby.

Robert L. “Bob” Spicer, 75, of Hiawatha, died early Monday morning, June 26, 2023, at Maple Heights Nursing Home where he had been a resident since January.

Bob was born at Sabetha, October 26, 1947, one of four children born to Alva Leroy and Elizabeth Arnold Spicer and had lived most of his life in Hiawatha. He grew up south of Hiawatha and attended schools here and Willis before graduating with the last class at Robinson High School in 1966. Soon after high school, he served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict, discharged at the rank of sgt. In 1971. He served in the KSARNG in Hiawatha before being discharged in 1974.

After the military when his family was younger, they lived at Cozad Nebraska for 6 years where he worked for Monroe Automotive before returning to Hiawatha. He then joined the family business, Spicer Salvage, working with his father and brother Jim prior to working for CR Industries in Seneca for 14 years. In 2008, he started his own business recycling scrap metal until ill health forced him to retire.

He grew up in the Methodist Church in Willis.

He married Rose Ann McNett, August 12, 1974, at Church of Christ at Horton. They divorced in 1989 but still remained friends. She survives.

Also surviving is a son Michael Spicer (Tammy) of Fairview, step-daughter Karen Roland of Bellingham, Mass., a brother Jim Spicer of rural Hiawatha, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Linda Curless and Jane Stahl.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Thursday where the family will meet that evening from 5 until 7 p.m. Services will then be held with Shane Spangler officiating. Brown County Veterans Honor Guard will perform military honors. Cremation to follow service with private family inurnment at Corneilson Cemetery, Reserve.

Xela MaeLea passed away Friday, June 16th, 2023 at the age of 3 years, 3 months, and 3 days. She was born Friday, March 13th, 2020 in Americus, Georgia. She is the second youngest of 8 siblings.&nbsp;

Xela MaeLea had an undeniable pureness, and her tender love was felt by all she encountered. Xela was an adventurous child, and kept everyone on their toes. She was ornery, in the best way. Her inquisitive nature led to many revelations, and an appreciation for things often overlooked. She particularly had an admiration for picking flowers. She was abundantly vocal from birth, and habitually woke up singing. Xela was nurturing and affectionate towards her family, and always willing to share her love. She was exceptionally creative, and regularly expressed her imagination through art. Xela is the epitome of innocence and light. Her blue eyes were a reminder of the sincere beauty in life. Her smile was radiant, and her laughter was infectious. Xela offered the world a bright, lively, ambitious spirit that will be remembered by all.&nbsp;

Xela MaeLea is survived by mother, Corbyn; siblings: Kora Jean, Elias Ezra, Julina Ann, Estin Steiger, Livia Star, Ezrik Ira, and Enix Reed; grandparents, Julie Martin and Rick Reynolds; in addition to many other relatives and loved ones.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 30th at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower.

Elmer Willard Gentry 84, of St. Joseph, MO., passed away Friday, June 23, 2023 in an Atchison, KS. hospital. He was born May 7, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Sarah and Willard Gentry. 

He graduated from Benton High School, class of 1957 and married Patricia Hurd on October 26, 1958 and she survives of the home. He served in the Army National Guard for twenty-five years retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer III. Elmer was the owner operator of Branson Furnace &amp; Appliance Co. 

He was a member the former Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, the Y-Fry club and was active in boy scouts as a troop leader and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, at Camp Geiger. He enjoyed coaching boys baseball, football and youth wrestling. &nbsp;He also loved to fish, hunt and mushroom hunt. 

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold Gentry, and sister, Flora Mae Simmons. 

Survivors include wife, Patricia Lynn Gentry of the home, sons, Patrick (Debbie) Gentry, St. Joseph, MO, Timothy (Esra) Gentry, Cherry Hills Village, CO, daughter, Shelley (Rick) Berry, and a son, Elmer Joe (Corie) Gentry of Frankfort, IL, sister, Doris Chappell of St. Joseph, MO there are eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Funeral services and public live stream; 11:00 am, Thursday, June 29, 2023 at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Sparta Cemetery.

Streausie M. Bryson, 92, King City, MO passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023, at a Stanberry, MO nursing home.

She was born on August 1, 1930, in Bolckow, Missouri the daughter of Loyd and Grace (Gerber) King.

On June 12, 1948, she married Jack Bryson in Savannah, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 24, 1990.

Streausie was a dedicated mother and farm wife. She was a member of the Hammer Memorial United Methodist Church in King City and the Ruth Circle there. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Mark Bryson.

Streausie is survived by her children, Sidney (Teresa) Bryson, Platte City, MO and Kristen (Wayne) Law, King City, MO; daughter-in-law, Jo Bryson, Union Star, MO; grandchildren, Emmett, Will, Casey, Matt, and Luke Bryson, Seth and Reagan Law, and Hannah Jundy; 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 30 at Roberson Funeral Home, King City, MO. Burial will follow in King City Cemetery, King City, MO. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dr. Larry Lindsey, 79, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and pastor, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023.

He was born on September 8, 1943, to Joseph and Mary (Nelson) Lindsey in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Larry Lindsey enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1961 after graduating high school and was stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky. On December 8, 1962, he was united in marriage to Marcia Ann Zartman. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2022.

Larry worked for Great American Insurance in Columbus for 12 years. Larry and his wife surrendered to ministry in 1975 and moved their family to Springfield, Missouri where he graduated from Baptist Bible College with his bachelor’s degree in theology in 1978. Upon graduation, he and his family moved to St. Joseph, Missouri to pastor at the Eastside Baptist Church, where he served for 45 years. Under his direction, Eastside Baptist Academy and Thank Heaven Daycare were founded. In 2000, Larry graduated from Louisiana Baptist University with his doctorate in biblical studies.

He was a man devoted to his family, telling others about the Lord Jesus Christ’s saving grace. Along with preaching about the gospel he also loved to sing gospel music as he played the piano. He was a loving husband, caring father and faithful friend. He had a larger-than-life personality with a unique laugh that made you smile.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Lindsey, and his brother, Ken Lindsey.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; children, David and Timothy (Theresa) Lindsey; granddaughters, Lauren Smith (Bronson) and Victoria Lindsey; great granddaughter, Parker Grace; sister-in-law, Joyce Sholly (Duane); and nephews, Greg (Sue), Mark (Ronda) and Jeff.

Farewell Services 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, Eastside Baptist Church. Interment Mount Auburn Cemetery. The family will gather with friends one hour prior to the service.

In 2000, Larry graduated from Louisiana Baptist University with his doctorate in biblical studies.He was a man devoted to his family, telling others about the Lord Jesus Christ’s saving grace. Along with preaching about the gospel he also loved to sing gospel music as he played the piano. He was a loving husband, caring father and faithful friend. He had a larger-than-life personality with a unique laugh that made you smile.He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Lindsey, and his brother, Ken Lindsey.Survivors include his wife, Marcia; children, David and Timothy (Theresa) Lindsey; granddaughters, Lauren Smith (Bronson) and Victoria Lindsey; great granddaughter, Parker Grace; sister-in-law, Joyce Sholly (Duane); and nephews, Greg (Sue), Mark (Ronda) and Jeff.Farewell Services 1:00 P.M. Valerie Ann Wigton passed away on June 21, 2023.

The eldest daughter of Chester and Gera Smith born on April 8, 1947, graduated from Lafayette High School, class of 1965, and also from St. Joseph Jr. College. She enjoyed many of her working years with Schmitt &amp; McClure, Oral &amp; Maxillofacial Surgeons and for Henry W. Fricke, Jr. DDS.

She loved to cook, sing, write poetry and was thrilled to be a published author. She wrote many articles to the Editor’s section of the News-Press when something caught her eye or heart. She taught children’s Sunday School for over 20 years and was a proud founding member of the Strong Tower Baptist Church.

She was married to Richard L. Bradley and a daughter graced their lives. They later divorced and she married the love of her life, W. Michael Wigton on January 4, 1981. He brought with him to the marriage a son and daughter, and they made a great family of five.

W. Michael survives of the home. She leaves behind her children, Julie Sherr of Loganville, GA, Jeffrey Wigton of Texas, and Sarah (David) Harper of Missouri City, TX. Also, her grandchildren, Nicholas and Ashlyn Sherr, Jeremiah and Liberty Wigton, her precious sister and brother-in-law, Verlynn and Dino Sansone of Platte City, MO, nephew, Ryan (Amber) Sansone of Platte City, niece Adrian (Jason) Smith of Kansas City. Other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, many friends, a wonderful church family, special friends, Pam Sunderland and Irene Sturgeon, and little sweetheart, Mason Matchett.

Keith “Grumpy” Felts, 72, Plattsburg, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at his home. &nbsp;

He was born August 18, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ervin Earl and Stella Juanita (Reynolds) Felts.

Grumpy married Mary Ann Binsbacher on April 25, 1987. She survives of the home.

A member of the United Steel Workers Union, Grump worked for Armco Steel for 21 years.

Grumpy loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Independence Racing Club, National and Missouri Racing Pigeon Associations, and Missouri Trappers Association. He also raised rabbits and finches, as well as ran a bait shop, his primary interest was cabinet making and woodworking.&nbsp;

He served his country in the U.S. Army and also served his community as a three-term member of the Clinton County R-III School Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shane Matthew Felts; and two brothers, Kerry Felts and Kenneth Felts.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Mary Ann; three sons, Myron Allen Felts and Brandon Ray Felts, both of the home, and Reginald Delano Felts of Pensacola, Florida; two grandsons, Zackary and Joey Felts; brother, Kevin Felts (Joyce) of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Mitzi Currivan; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Keith 'Grumpy' Felts 1950 - 2023

Sharon K. Groce, 78, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, surrounded by her family. &nbsp;She was born November 18, 1944, in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Geneva and Thomas Meeks. 

She married Everett R. Groce on September 25, 1961. &nbsp;Sharon attended Lafayette High School and worked at the former Methodist Medical Center as a CNA, Barbosa's Castillo and Riviera Tanning Salon where she retired. She was a proud member of the "Lunch Bunch" and volunteered at the Patee Park Food Bank. &nbsp;Sharon ("Ma/Grammy/Auntie") cherished the time she spent with her family and friends, especially the children. 

She enjoyed trips to Branson, MO, wine tasting at local wineries, playing the slot machines at local casinos, cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, and spending time outside watching hummingbirds and tending to her lawn and flowers. She loved evening visits on the patio with long-time neighbors, Joe and Sue Lysaght, and her cat, "Missy Girl." She also loved dog sitting for neighbor dog "Bruno", who kept her company and cuddled with her on the sofa. She always looked forward to going on car rides with her sister Carol Avery, great-niece Kaci Ruoff, great-great-niece Monroe Ruoff, and great-great-nephew Huxley "Milo" Ruoff. &nbsp;More recently, Sharon very much enjoyed video calls with family and friends.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Geneva and Thomas Meeks, husband of 56 years Everett "Poppy" R Groce, son Scott "Scottie" A Groce, sisters Lenora "Darlene" Braman, Cela "Sissy" Milborn, brothers William 'Bill" Shuch, and James "Jimmy", Richard, Burt, Dean, Donald and Danny Meeks. 

She is survived by son Randall "Randy" R Groce (Jacob Jordan), sister Carol S Avery, brother-in-law Ted Groce (Mary Lee) and countless nieces and nephews. &nbsp;Sharon is also survived by her bonus family, sister Cheryl Cattan, son Doug Ault, daughter Jeannette Moran, and granddaughters Ja'Ran "Jai" Gaddie, Jazmyn "Jazzie" Grooms, Harvey "Dylan" Weaklend, and twin great-great-grandsons Bentley and Braxten Wegenka.

Mrs. Groce has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. &nbsp;A Celebration of her life will be held at the F.O.P. Hall in St. Joseph on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.

Shirley Meeks, 90, of Clarksdale, MO, went to her heavenly home on &nbsp;June 22, 2023. Shirley was born June 19, 1933, in Russellville, MO, to Everett and Delpha Lucille (Wiser) Brizendine.

She was a member of Clarksdale Baptist Church, and enjoyed cooking and playing the piano.

Survivors include a son Dennis Meeks; two brothers Dale Brizendine (Sharon), Terry Brizendine (Jimmye); seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was born July 13, 1935 to Daniel and Dolly (Martin) Harris.

Marge married Dale Wayne Elkins on February 12, 1955. He preceded her in death on October 29, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dale; her son, Kenneth Elkins; her parents, and six siblings.

Survivors include her children, Shelley Elkins, Traci Campbell and Edward Elkins, all of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Brandon Johnson (Becky) of Austin, Texas, Amy Greenwood of Haltom City, Texas, Cory Campbell of Amazonia, Missouri, and Megan Campbell of Kansas City, Missouri; four great-grandchildren.

Joyce Langlais 1930 - 2023

Nancy Elaine (Hebbeln) Becker was an extraordinary woman who leaves a legacy of love and perseverance to all she knew. She was born on Wednesday, October 26, 1932 in Iowa to her beloved daddy, Frank Hebbeln, and mother, Gladys Siefers. After her daddy got remarried to her step-mother, Helen, she moved from Petersville to the “big” town Delmar, Iowa in the 7th grade and met her lifelong best friend and husband, Duane Becker. Who knew that becoming sweethearts in high school would lead to an adventure of a lifetime? Her adventure included 72 years of marriage with “that Becker boy,” as Frank used to call him. She is survived by her devoted husband, partner, and best friend, Duane, who was her steadfast primary caregiver in the last years of her life.

Nancy graduated high school in 1951 in Delmar, Iowa with Duane, in a class of 17 students. After high school Duane and Nancy got married. She went to cosmetology school and in her later years enjoyed painting nails and braiding hair for her granddaughter.&nbsp;

Duane and Nancy welcomed three children to their family in the 1950s- oldest son Ed (“Eddie Lee”) Becker, of Shawnee, and twin girls, Susan (“Susie”) Loftus of Leavenworth, and Sandra (“Sandy”) Becker, of Lansing. She worked a variety of jobs, including factory work and sales, before retiring on her farm in Lansing. If you asked her where “home” was, she’d always answer Iowa, although she had been a Kansas resident since 1969 and spent many years enjoying building up her landscape and gardens on the farm. Once the grass started growing you could bet the best place to catch her was out in the yard on her John Deere!

Anyone who knew her, knows that although she barely squeaked in at an even five feet tall, she was a firecracker! She could outwork anyone she met, sometimes working out in the yard until she could barely stand. One of her favorite roles in life was to be a grandmother. She was grandma to Hollie Mae Becker, stationed in Bavaria, Germany; Hillary Hance of Alabama; Leo Becker of Leavenworth; Mitchell Loftus; Jordan Loftus of Lenexa; and Nolan Loftus of Shawnee. She was also great-grandma to Xander, Kloey, Golda, Oliver, Viola, Theodore, Christopher, and baby Eloise who just arrived on May 19.&nbsp;

She endured many struggles growing up just after the Great Depression. She spent her early years with her grandparents, Rudolph and Rosa, and her aunt Marcy, whom she adored. Nancy still spoke fondly of Marcy, who died in 1942, eight decades later. Besides being very poor, she spent some time in an orphanage. The hard and transformative experiences in her childhood pushed her to be a hard worker later in life, and she enjoyed giving her children and grandchildren things and opportunities she never had, such as a college education.

Nancy never liked the water- she never learned to swim- and she detested milk, after having to drink powdered milk growing up. She liked to draw, to watch her cows in the pasture, and she really enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed traveling- she made trips all over the US and also to Mexico, Jamaica, Germany, Austria, and Italy.&nbsp;

Nancy went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 15, 2023, leaving those who loved her sad beyond measure. She will be remembered for her tenacity, her strong opinions, her generosity, and just how fiercely she loved her family, especially her sweetheart, Duane.

Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Nancy Elaine Becker 1932 - 2023

James “Nick” Lichter, 79, of Havensville, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born February 5, 1944 at Seneca, the son of Frank and Lucy Drealan Lichter. He attended Havensville schools, but graduated from Emmett High School due to the Havensville High School closing. He served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967.

Nick was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga.

He married Rosalie M. Ouellette on June 20, 1969 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives, of the home. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary the day before his passing.

Nick had worked for Sante Fe in Topeka for thirty-four years, retiring in 2004. He and Rosalie also raised livestock and dogs together. They had the first farrowing house in Kansas.

Nick spent his spare time at the casino, traveling, and tending to his garden, all with his “sweetie” by his side. He enjoyed fishing, farming, reading, porch sitting, being ornery, and taking care of his dog Molly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bill Lichter, and two sisters, Pat Evans and Dorothy Eisenbarth.

Other survivors include two daughters, Kathlena “Pee Wee” Jones (Doug) and Brenda “Squirt” Becker, all of Seneca, two sisters, Beth Cook, Wichita and Barbara Lichter, Henry, IL, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 24th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Onaga. Nick will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the church, with a Rosary being prayed at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be next week in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Clyde, KS. James “Nick” Lichter, 79, of Havensville, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at his home, surrounded by family.He was born February 5, 1944 at Seneca, the son of Frank and Lucy Drealan Lichter. He attended Havensville schools, but graduated from Emmett High School due to the Havensville High School closing. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 28, 1937. He was the oldest son of Milton and Lucille (Johnson) Wood.

He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1956. He joined Missouri Air National Guard in 1955 and served 9 years. &nbsp;

He married Carol Maxwell from Stanberry, Missouri on November 19, 1958. They were married over 64 years.

He was an union electrician with Local 545 for 42 years, retiring in 2000. He was a handy man and was always available to help anyone who needed help with a project. He enjoyed fishing, roller coasters and Nascar car racing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ronald Wood, Sr. and Roger Wood.

He is survived by wife Carol, son Russell Wood (Cindy Porter) of Gower, MO; daughters Rhonda (Bill) Carroll of Wichita, KS and Ruth Wood (Ronnie Davidson) of Platte City, MO; 5 grandsons Quentin, Jared and Trevor Wood, Brett (Kayla) Carroll and Blake Carroll, and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

The family will receive friends Sunday June 25th from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel. Funeral service 11:00 AM Monday at the funeral home. Interment following at Ashland Cemetery.

Nayib Elias Cattan, 78, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away June 20th, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care surrounded by family. He was the husband of Cheryl Cattan and they shared 23 years of marriage together.

Nayib was born in Quillota, Chile on July 24th, 1944. He was the son of Elias Cattan and Berta Parra Arroyo and brother to Norma, Nicodemes, Betty, Iris, and Orlando. He went on to own his own restaurant in Hawaii and later became the head waiter for American Hawaiian Cruise Line. &nbsp;This is where he met his “Honey” Cheryl. They were married on February 15th in the year 2000. He gained three children, Patty (Tom Shipley), Scott (Heather Thompson), and Jeanette (David Moran). Today, he has seven grandchildren Baylee (Jacob Meers), Jazmyn (Kody Wegenka), Dylan and Alayna Weaklend, Wyatt Thompson, Hailey Brown, and Harper Moran. He has three great grandchildren Bentley, Braxten and Beau. He also inherited by marriage five Rickel brothers and four sisters. Nayib was the owner and operator of the Riviera in Cameron, Mo. He was loved beyond measure and will be greatly missed.

There will be a visitation in Cameron, Mo Friday June 23rd from 5-7pm at the Poland-Thompson funeral home. &nbsp;On Saturday June 24th at Heaton- Bowman- Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph, Mo, visitation will be held at 10am and the funeral will be held at 11am. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Mausoleum.

He attended Savannah High School and and worked for DeKalb County, Triple F Feed Store and Midwest Scrap metal. He loved animals, fishing, sky diving, going to rock concerts, and hanging out with his grand babies. 

Charley was preceded in death by wife, Tina Marie Gill, father, Cecil Wayne Gill, and granddaughter, Hallie. 

Survivors include mother Susan Proctor of St. Joseph, daughter, Lacey Gill (Joey Gardner), grandchildren, Sophia, Joseph and Lorelei, MO, brother, Jerry (Loretta) Gill, St. Joseph, MO, and sister &nbsp;Penny Gill (Mike Ramsey), of Rea, MO.

Christopher Castro passed away on June 20th, 2023, at the age of 63. He was born on August 29th, 1959 in Loma Linda, California.

Larry L. Wells,71, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

He was born April 11, 1952 in St. Joseph to Harry and Lucille (Slocum) Wells.

Larry married Annette Betts on June 28, 1980. She survives of the home.

He was a welder at Johnson Controls for 44½ years before retiring and was a member of the Eagles Lodge No. 49, where he and Annette would go dancing.

In his younger years, Larry enjoyed playing softball and bowling. He liked to watch NASCAR and the Chiefs and loved cheering for his grandchildren at their sporting events.

Though known for his sharp wit, he was a big softy on Christmas. He took a week off every year for his favorite holiday, helping with numerous decorations and enjoying having the family together for a big dinner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Janice VanGinkel and Marilyn Smith.

Mary Bet or Betsy as she was called by her family and friends, was born on April 11, 1922 to Effie (Howard) and Louis Montague in rural Platte County near Camden Point, MO. Her family moved from their home near Camden Point to her ancestral home near Platte City in 1936. With the exception of a few brief periods early in her marriage, she resided there until April of this year. She was united in marriage to Bennie Ray Anderson on August 19, 1942. He prematurely preceded her in death on May 5, 1968. She is survived by her son Ronnie Ray Anderson (Dana), her daughter Monty Kay (Dave) Clark, both of Platte City and her grandson Ben Clark (Karli).

It was no secret that Betsy loved the farm and animals – particularly horses and cats. Not many years ago, Dave asked her if she could name all the horses she had in her life. We are pretty sure that her long list was complete and accurate! The whole family was in the Platte County Saddle Club and she participated in countless parades including the American Royal for many years. Betsy hauled Kay and her horses all over the area for years so she could participate in local shows. She also attended a southern Missouri trail ride on the Big Piney for 20 consecutive years.&nbsp;

She had a deep fondness for chickens, ducks and geese, too, and had a lot of them over the years. Many years ago she raised some quail. One time she successfully raised one tiny baby rabbit from a nest of several she had harrowed over while preparing a field for planting. Animals that were supposed to be raised for profit were not exempt from her adoration. Too many times hogs, sheep and cows that should have been moved on were held back because she couldn’t bear to part with them. She and Bennie farmed together prior to his death. She was at her happiest working in the field running a tractor or taking care of the livestock. It was no secret she was not at all fond of anything resembling housework – although she did love to make yeast rolls in her younger days. She loved to drive the old 2 ton Chevy farm truck during harvest – or anytime. For a time she helped Ronnie by operating his belt loader that picked up rock from an abandoned rail bed. She really loved to drive anything and successfully renewed her driver’s license at the age of 97. (She didn’t have anything to drive, but it was kind of the principle!) She said a lot of times that if she was younger and needed a job, she would like to have been a truckdriver.&nbsp; She grew up with a father that was a very successful trap shooter. Guns were a passion of his and he passed this on to his daughter. She wasn’t interested in trap shooting (except many years later when she loved to watch her grandson participating in the sport) but she loved to shoot pistols. She had quite the reputation for being an excellent shot and was known to outshoot some local law enforcement that would gather to target practice. During their marriage, she and Bennie loved to deer hunt in the fall.

In 101 years of life, Mary Bet saw an unbelievable amount of change. She grew up with very little, yet we can remember her saying that she didn’t know she was poor because everyone she knew was in the same circumstances. She would say that she had a pony, the old work horses, cats and chickens and she lived in a home with her parents, grandparents and a bachelor uncle whom she adored, so she had all she needed. She and Bennie were married less than a year when he went off to the service, but he came back home and they started their life of building a farm and family. He was taken away way too soon and she was a widow for 55 years. The year after Bennie died, her beloved mother passed away. It is easy to look at any life and say how it could have been done differently, but that is fruitless and without any merit. After 101 years Mary - Mary Bet - Betsy is now reunited with those that she has been separated from for so very long and we will rejoice in that.

The family is so appreciative of the amazing staff at the Gower Convalescent Center and Three Rivers Hospice for their dedication and compassion.

Mary Elizabeth (Montague) Anderson, 101, of Platte City, passed away on June 15, 2023, at the Gower Convalescent Center. Mary Bet or Betsy as she was called by her family and friends, was born on April 11, 1922 to Effie (Howard) and Louis Montague in rural Platte County near Camden Point, MO. She attended the one room Styne school through 8th grade and then graduated from Camden Point High School in 1939. Thomas Neil MacPherson, age 75, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Monday, June 19, 2023, at Mosaic Life Care. He was a proud organ donor and was able to donate his eyes through Saving Sight.&nbsp;

Tom was born on November 8, 1947, in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, one of two children to Robert Neil MacPherson and Laura Mae (Young) MacPherson. As a military family, they moved all over the country growing up but ended up back in Atchison where he graduated from high school in 1966. Tom joined the United States Army in 1970, and spent most of his tenure in Korea until his Honorable Discharge in 1974. He returned to the states and pursued a criminal justice psychology degree from Missouri Western in St. Joseph, MO, graduating in 1980. During his years in school, he worked for his best friend, Joe Peltzer at the Warf.

He and Karen Jones were married on October 14, 1981, in Fort Worth, Texas. Tom used his degree to make a full career of Law Enforcement. He joined the Bedford, TX, police department in 1982, where he served as a police officer until he retired in 2005. He had many specialties throughout his career, especially working under cover. After retiring, they returned to Atchison, and he spent his time again with Joe Peltzer at Commercial Vending.&nbsp;

Tom is survived by his wife, Karen MacPherson; his in-laws, Norman G. and June Jones; sister-in-law, Rita (J.D.) Hartman; brother-in-law, Leon (Virginia) Jones; two nieces, a nephew and numerous cousins. He will also be missed by his fur babies, Tom never saw a stray animal he didn’t feed; he even kept treats in his patrol car.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Jerry MacPherson.&nbsp;

A visitation with the family to celebrate Tom’s life will be Monday, June 26, 2023, from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home. Please wear casual attire because Tom wouldn’t want you to be uncomfortable!
