The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Sean M. Graham, 20, Mercer, was northbound on U.S. 65 one half mile north of Trenton.

A mattress blew out of the bed of the pickup and into the path of a northbound 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Jacob I. Graham, 20, Mercer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The motorcycle struck the mattress, traveled off the road and the driver was ejected.

Grundy County ambulance transported Jacob Graham to Wright Memorial Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP.

Clinton-DeKalb County ambulance transported Cromwell, a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl to Cameron Regional Medical Center. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Northwest Missouri State University is returning to traditional in-person classes this fall for the first time since the COVID pandemic began.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Health and Well-being Assistant Vice President Chris Dawe says&nbsp;the university will be having prizes totaling $20,000 dollars to students that have received the vaccine.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“You know obviously just making the smart choice to be vaccinated,&nbsp;and then turn in your card,&nbsp;and you are entered,” Dawe tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dawe says at the end of the day, the choice to get the vaccine is each individual’s decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I think the research is clear that they are effective. That they’re safe and they are our best defense&nbsp;so we’re going to&nbsp;just do what we can to promote that, and then people will make their choices,” says Dawe.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dawe&nbsp;says&nbsp;Northwest wants the traditional college experience for their students.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We want people to get vaccinated, we know that that’s going to help each individual and our entire community,” says Dawe.&nbsp;“The more people get vaccinated, the more we’ll be able to live the lives that we want to live.”&nbsp;

The university will be giving away financial prizes in the form of scholarships, free-parking passes, dining discounts, and gift cards to the bookstore&nbsp;to students who enter the drawing.&nbsp;

St. Joseph police report Kelley Steele underwent surgery at the local hospital.

A suspect, described as a heavily tattooed, muscular white man
in his late 20s or early 30s, remains at large.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Focus driven by Erin M. Randle, 18, Maryville, was eastbound on U.S. 71 just east of Hawk Road northwest of Maryville.

The car traveled off the right side of the road and struck a bridge rail. Nodaway County ambulance transported Randle to Mosaic in Maryville. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, will be held Friday
evening.

Museum Executive Director Eric Fuson says this year’s theme
for the Pot of Gold Arts Gala and Auction is “Roaring into the 20s,” inspired
by the Roaring 20s a century ago.

“Put on your duds and come on out,” says Albrecht-Kemper Executive
Director Eric Fuson. “We’ll party down in the speakeasy and a big dinner
upstairs. It’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of fun.”

The Pot of Gold Gala begins at 5:30 Friday evening at the
museum located at 2818 Frederick Avenue, St. Joseph.

There will be 1920s Prohibition-era specialty cocktails, a
speakeasy taproom, both a silent and live auction, and live music.

Museum Communication Manager Jill Carlson invites you, if so
inclined, to dress the part.

“A very specific aesthetic, so think glitz and glamor, old
Hollywood, also, if you have a felt hat that you want to put on, a zoot suit if
you will,” Carlson says. “All are welcome.”

This is the 43rd Pot of Gold Gala and Auction, an
annual event interrupted last year by the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, the theme,
“Roaring into the ‘20s,” was specifically designed to coincide with the year
2020.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” according to

The driver pulled to the shoulder and attempted to make a wide left turn and struck a northbound 2000 Peterbilt semi driven by Paul D. Bennett, 52, Seneca, Kansas, who had attempted to pass the International.

A private vehicle transported Bennett to the hospital in Sabetha. Buchanan County EMS transported Morris to Mosaic LIfe Care. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the MSHP.

A return of significant new coronavirus cases locally concerns
Missouri Western State University President Elizabeth Kennedy, but hasn’t
prompted a change in the university’s fall plans.

Kennedy says the university is considering incentives to
encourage staff and students to get vaccinated.

“One of the questions I get asked is almost the flip side,”
Kennedy tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “Are you going to mandate
vaccinations? And the answer is no, we’re not going to mandate. We’re
considering doing it more with a carrot, if you will approach, than the stick.”

Kennedy will be meeting with her COVID-19 Response Team to consider
whether the university should offer incentives to entice students to get
vaccinated.

Kennedy says the university is speaking with Mosaic Life Care
about the possibility of hosting a vaccination clinic during the Kansas City
Chiefs Training Camp on the St. Joseph campus.

“If you watch the trend lines, we are not headed in the right
direction,” Kennedy says. “So, it really is imperative for folks to get the
vaccine, to get themselves protected so that we can keep doing our normal life
and keep getting back to being together.”

The St. Joseph Health Department reported 79 new COVID-19
cases in Buchanan County Monday with a huge spike on Tuesday, with 135 new
cases. The Wednesday number came off that high with Buchanan County recording 39
new cases.

Mosaic Life Care reported Thursday morning it was treating 51
total patients; 48 in St. Joseph and three in Maryville.

Missouri Western continues to prepare to return to as near
normal as possible this fall as it welcomes students back to the St. Joseph
campus. Again, Kennedy says the university will not require masks this semester
and will not mandate vaccinations.

“Currently, our policy on campus is if you are unvaccinated,
we ask that you wear a mask. If you are vaccinated, you don’t have to,” Kennedy
says. “There are also more advantages to being vaccinated, just in general,
because if you are exposed to someone who does get COVID, you, as a vaccinated
individual, don’t have to quarantine. As someone who had to go through
quarantine, I can tell you, you don’t want to do that. It is not much fun.”

Kennedy says she is hopeful the recent outbreak is not permanent
and that the area can return to normal.

“I’m still hopeful. I’m still optimistic,” Kennedy says. “I
think that as we start to see the cases rise, there may be some people that
say, wow, maybe I should get the vaccine and get myself vaccinated. I think as
more data accumulates about how effective the vaccines are, that will put us in
the right direction.”

MWSU to return to normal this fall, despite COVID increase

St. Joseph police have confirmed the identity of the
motorcyclist fatally injured in a traffic accident on the Belt Highway Sunday.

Police say 30-year-old Hayden Lawrence Muck of St. Joseph died
at the scene Sunday afternoon.

According to police reports, Muck lost control of his
motorcycle when he tried to avoid a vehicle pulling onto the Belt. The
motorcycle skidded, throwing him off.

The St. Joseph Health Department is adjusting clinic hours due to the recent increase in COVID cases.&nbsp;&nbsp;

St. Joseph Health Department Clinic Supervisor Connie Werner says&nbsp;the increase in&nbsp;COVID-19 case numbers has caused the contact tracing&nbsp;staff&nbsp;to adjust their work flow.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are adjusting our clinic hours to allow for Health Department staff to&nbsp;help assist and&nbsp;supplement&nbsp;in getting cases called,&nbsp;cases entered into the state system, all of the pieces that relate to COVID cases,” Werner tells St. Joseph Post.&nbsp;“We are&nbsp;adjusting&nbsp;our&nbsp;work flow and hours to adjust to the surge in cases.”&nbsp;

Werner says&nbsp;the clinic will reopen to regular hours in August to accommodate back to school vaccinations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“From now through August 9th&nbsp;we will have walk-in clinics but it will be in the afternoon, 1pm to 4pm. Starting on August 9th&nbsp;we will resume our morning and&nbsp;afternoon hours which are 8am to 11am, and 1pm to 4pm.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The change in hours will allow&nbsp;staff to address the surge in COVID-19&nbsp;cases.&nbsp;The impacted services are immunizations and TB testing, all other Health Department services will stay the same.&nbsp;

The new temporary&nbsp;clinic hours for the health department are from 1pm to 4pm, Monday through Friday. The clinic will reopen to original hours starting August 9th, in time for school immunizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The recent increase in COVID-19 cases impacts the St. Joseph Health Department

A 32-year-old man, who fled law enforcement in Platte County,
driving north on I-29, gave up to St. Joseph police after a nearly nine-hour
standoff in south St. Joseph Wednesday.

Antoine Anderson has been charged with 2nd degree
burglary, 1st degree tampering with a motor vehicle, and resisting
arrest by Platte County authorities.

Platte County authorities accuse Anderson of stealing a vehicle
in that county and fleeing at a high rate of speed to St. Joseph, eventually
climbing onto the roof of Dan’s New and Used Material, where he stayed until
police could talk him down.

St. Joseph police say they began talking with Anderson, determined
he was not armed, and began to fear he might do himself harm. He surrendered
without incident and was taken to Mosaic Life Care for evaluation.

Just after 8p.m. Tuesday, Terry Smith Jr. reported the theft of a 2011&nbsp; Volkswagen Passat from the 1500 Block of Main Street in Atchinson, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Smith and the suspect identified as&nbsp;23-year-old Kristina A. Smith of Independence, Mo., know each other and were in the Volkswagen in the 1500 block Main when Smith got out the vehicle to retrieve something left at a nearby car wash.

The suspect, Kristina Smith, drove off with the car. 

At 9:30a.m. Wednesday, police located the suspect and the vehicle at K-7 and 330th Road where the vehicle had run out of gas. Police arrested her and she remains in custody, according to online jail records. Police have not reported requested charges in the case.

Police: Missouri woman dumped car's owner at car wash

At 5:30a.m.,&nbsp; officers responded to 3rd and Laramie where a boat and trailer were setting in the intersection, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. An investigation determined that a 2002 Dodge truck with the attached boat and trailer had just been stolen from the 500 block Washington Street. The truck had then been driven several blocks where the trailer was disconnected and left behind. Police continue to search for the truck as the investigation continues.

Just after 1:00a.m. an attempt was made to take a vehicle from the 400 block Unity, according to Wilson. A short time later forced entry was made into a vehicle in the 300 block Mound. Vehicle alarms alerted victims and police to both scenes. 

Although both vehicles sustained damage nothing was taken. 

At 1:30AM police officers attempted to stop a Ford pick up truck pulling a utility trailer in the area of 3rd and Main. 

The truck fled from officers. The trailer was recovered in the 700 block Riley and the truck was recovered at 5th and Riley with no suspects located. It was subsequently determined that the truck and trailer had been stolen from the 900 block North 6th sometime after 10PM.

Police: Pickup, boat and trailer taken from Atchison home

The Salvation Army of St. Joseph received a donation of 143 box fans from Westlake Ace Hardware to give to those struggling to beat the heat.

St. Joseph customers donated over $2,100 to the cause to help fellow citizens in need.

"People come to shop and they leave their extra change and give a little money to buy these fans," said St. Joseph Salvation Army major Ronald Key. "We've got 143 fans, which is over $2,000 worth of fans from money that people have donated."

Key says this fan drive has gone on every summer for the past 6-7 years, thanks to the Salvation Army's partnership with Westlake Ace Hardware.

He says it's a great way to help those in need get through the hottest days of the year.

"For a lot of people who come (get the fans), they either don't have an air conditioner or maybe just have window air," Key said, "and they just need something to circulate (the air) or can't afford to turn their air (temperature) down. So, this is a great help and a great way to help people survive the hot summer months."

The fans were loaded into a trailer at the hardware store on Wednesday morning and taken over to the Salvation Army, where the fans will be available for free on a first-come, first-serve basis to whoever might need them.

"The hot, hot months are coming up," Key said. "So, we're able to help people, and we appreciate the generosity of not only Westlake, but also of the people who come in and shop in their stores."

After a year of waiting, the Liberty Oak Splash Park at Hyde Park in south St. Joseph is scheduled to open this Friday afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The public is welcome to attend the grand opening celebration which is scheduled for 4pm Friday. After the celebration, the community is welcome to experience the splash park for the afternoon and evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Beginning Saturday, Liberty Oak Splash Park will be open daily from 10am to 8pm. Hours will adjust later in the season&nbsp;to accommodate earlier&nbsp;nightfall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This project was funded by the 2019 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) half-cent sales tax that was voted on,&nbsp;and approved by voters in 2018.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Friday is the grand opening for St. Joseph's Liberty Oak Splash Park

Bishop LeBlond High School named Kimberly Huss as its next principal.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Huss says there will be some changes to the school.&nbsp;She’s just not certain what those changes will entail.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There will be some changes in Catholic education in St. Joseph,” Huss tells St. Joseph Post. “We just have to make sure that Bishop LeBlond continues to be a vibrant part of that Catholic community.”&nbsp;

Huss says it’s hard to leave the classroom and some coaching, because she&nbsp;loved teaching&nbsp;her student.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“My plan is to try to stay connected by visiting classrooms as often as possible, but also continue to&nbsp;teach our younger teachers and our less experienced teachers to become better at their craft and&nbsp;so who I am teaching just becomes a little bit different rather&nbsp;than&nbsp;not teaching at all,” says Huss.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Huss says she hopes students will become immersed in the positive school culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I&nbsp;am looking forward to building a culture inside our school that is positive and has great school spirit,” says Huss.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Huss says she will continue to coach some for the school. Huss had been assistant principal for LeBlond since 2016&nbsp;and taught at LeBlond since 2004.&nbsp;

Huss says her goal as principal is to advance the mission of the school. She says the goal of the school is to prepare students for secondary education and for their futures.&nbsp;Huss started in her position as principal at the beginning of this month, July 1st.&nbsp;&nbsp;

has emerged which supporters say would protect the nation’s water supply, but
opponents contend would give the EPA too much power.

The Waters of the United States proposal has returned under
the Biden Administration much to the dismay of Republican Congressman Sam
Graves.

“It’s just a bad nightmare, continuing or starting all over
again,” Graves tells St. Joseph Post. “And I thought we had put this to bed.”

Graves fought the rule, commonly called WOTUS, during the
Obama Administration and thought had arrived at a resolution two years ago,
clearly defining and limiting the EPA jurisdiction over waterways.

“And here we go again, they’re going to come back and open that
up, make it as vague as possible, which means the EPA could have jurisdiction
over every square inch of ground that a farmer or rancher is going to use,”
according to Graves.

Opponents contend the Clean Water Act limits the EPA jurisdiction
to navigable waters and Congress never intended it to be expanded beyond that.
Those who favor WOTUS say the EPA must be given jurisdiction to water sources
that feed navigable waters.

WOTUS was first proposed by the Obama Administration. Court
battles kept it from ever being implemented.

Graves claims input is missing in the latest process to
implement the rule.

“It’s absolutely missing,” Graves says. “They aren’t asking
the stakeholders and that’s the landowners what their thought is and how it’s
going to impact them. They are just moving forward with this rule change.”

Graves says WOTUS violates the Takings Clause of the
Constitution’s 5th Amendment.

“This is truly a takings,” Graves asserts. “It’s a takings
issue, taking the use of that property that farmers and ranchers have been producing
on for generations, hundreds of years, and saying you can’t do that anymore,
because we’ve determined that we have jurisdiction over it.”

Graves favors the Navigable Waters Protection Rule implemented
during the Trump Administration, which limits EPA jurisdiction to navigable
waters under the Clean Water Act.

Missouri man hospitalized after vehicle overturns

Mosaic Life Care and the St. Joseph Downtown Association are bringing back the ‘Red Rally’ this summer to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs' return for training camp.

The event is slated for Friday, July 30 at the Coleman Hawkins Park in Felix Street Square in downtown.

The event will be paired with the Phil Vandel ‘Sounds of Summer’ Concert, which&nbsp; will start at 6:30 that same evening.

Those who plan to attend are encouraged to wear Chiefs apparel, and are also encouraged to get vaccinated beforehand.

Mosaic spokeswoman Joey Austin says having training camp back, as well as the Red Rally, are great ways to celebrate a return to normalcy, but she encourages people to celebrate responsibly.

"We're so excited to have training camp here," Austin said. "We're ready to have them back, but we want to make sure our residents are mindful that we're still in a pandemic. There's a way to celebrate them being here, but celebrate safely."

Austin is happy to see the 'Red Rally' return after such a huge turnout for the event in 2019. She says the public needs to understand that the pandemic is not yet over, but she also knows that life has to return to normal, and having these events with big gatherings safely is possible.

"It's our way of kind of getting into that new normal," Austin said. "Living in this pandemic, but trying to offer things to our residents that we know that they want to celebrate. We just want to make sure from a healthcare perspective, we're doing that in a responsible and safe way."

Besides keeping people safe, Austin also hopes the event encourages Chiefs fans who live outside of the city to explore the downtown and see an area they wouldn't get to otherwise.

"In 2019, we had people not only from our community but those from out of town who spent the night," she said. "They went and ate in some restaurants that they had never been able to experience. They saw shops they never saw before, so it was a great way to showcase our downtown."

Downtown St. Joseph Association spokeswoman Christy George says merging the Red Rally with the Summer Concert Series made perfect sense. The first day of training camp is July 28, and the Phil Vandel show had long been scheduled for July 30.

"We were super excited to mix the two together," George said. "Phil Vandel does southern rock and some country and he's really good with the audience and all types of people. So, it was great to mix the Red Rally in with that. It's going to be a great party and great celebration."

This year’s Red Rally will be paired down compared to years past. Coaches and players will not make appearances, due to NFL protocols.

 However, KC Wolf and Max the Griffon from Missouri Western will be attendance. There’ll also be various food and drink vendors as well.

Austin says this year's training camp may not be the same as it has been in the past. Most notably, fans won't have any access to players, and there'll be no autographs this year.

But, she says the 'Red Rally' is still a great way to safely celebrate the return of Chiefs' training camp in St. Joseph.

"Certainly with the pandemic, this is a different training camp," Austin said. "We want to give people the opportunity to celebrate together, but just do it in a responsible way."

We just want to make sure from a healthcare perspective, we're doing that in a responsible and safe way."Besides keeping people safe, Austin also hopes the event encourages Chiefs fans who live outside of the city to explore the downtown and see an area they wouldn't get to otherwise."In 2019, we had people not only from our community but those from out of town who spent the night," she said. "They went and ate in some restaurants that they had never been able to experience. They saw shops they never saw before, so it was a great way to showcase our downtown."Downtown St. Joseph Association spokeswoman Christy George says merging the Red Rally with the Summer Concert Series made perfect sense. The first day of training camp is July 28, and the Phil Vandel show had long been scheduled for July 30."We were super excited to mix the two together," George said. "Phil Vandel does southern rock and some country and he's really good with the audience and all types of people. So, it was great to mix the Red Rally in with that. It's going to be a great party and great celebration."This year’s Red Rally will be paired down compared to years past. Coaches and players will not make appearances, due to NFL protocols. However, KC Wolf and Max the Griffon from Missouri Western will be attendance. There’ll also be various food and drink vendors as well.Austin says this year's training camp may not be the same as it has been in the past. Most notably, fans won't have any access to players, and there'll be no autographs this year.But, she says the 'Red Rally' is still a great way to safely celebrate the return of Chiefs' training camp in St. Joseph."Certainly with the pandemic, this is a different training camp," Austin said. Debris from recent storms can be taken to the St. Joseph
landfill by city residents beginning Thursday.

The City of St. Joseph says tree limbs and branches are the
only acceptable material that can be taken to the landfill for disposal.
Residents who bring debris to the landfill will have to make a stop at the
weight scale. The city is responsible to pay the state for the storm debris
tonnage accepted.

You must prove you are a St. Joseph resident. No commercial
vehicles are allowed.
