Republicans had a disappointing showing in the mid-term
elections.

But northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves says his party
had some surprising successes. Graves says, overall, Republicans are
disappointed the party didn’t gain more seats in the United States House of
Representatives.

“But we did pick up seats in New York we didn’t expect to. We
picked up seats in Florida. We picked up seats in California,” Graves tells
KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “So, that was a little bit of a surprise, the number of
seats for instance that we picked up in New York.”

Graves says the party failed to play better defense, losing
some seats Republicans had gained in the last election.

Graves says the priorities will change when Republicans take
control in January.

“We’ll be working very hard to try to get a handle on slowing
down this spending so we can get our arms around inflation,” Graves says. “We
want to make the United States energy-independent again. That’s something that
is vitally important.”

Republicans hold only a slight majority in the House. Once all
the elections have been settled, it appears Republicans will hold the slim
majority Democrats did with only about eight seats separating the two parties
in the U.S. House.

Eastern Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner, who won his first
re-election bid, says that razor-thin majority means Republicans need to choose
their fights wisely.

“So, for example, I think one of the fights that we should be
willing to have is to defund 87,000 IRS agents,” LaTurner tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post. “I don’t recall anyone across the district telling me that we need more IRS
agents. I think that’s a fight worth having.”

LaTurner also agrees Congress must get spending under control.

“We are $31 trillion in debt and counting,” Turner states. “We
have to have a solution for that. We have to live within our means. We have to
actually pass budgets. We’ve got to stop the trillions of dollars in
out-of-control spending that’s happened over the last two years that has really
contributed to inflation.”

LaTurner adds that since the party will enjoy only a slight
majority in the House, Republicans need to stick together.

“In order to get anything done, we’re going to have to stick
together,” according to LaTurner. “Of course, we’re going to have disagreements
internally, but we would do best to keep those disagreements internal.”

Graves agrees it’s important for the House Republican Caucus
to be united when the new Congress convenes at the beginning of the New Year.

“Obviously, what’s good for urban California is not
necessarily good for rural Missouri,” Graves says. “So, you do have some
differences when it comes to geography and some philosophical differences in
many respects. But we are a united conference and we’re walking through the
process of transition right now.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Ford Expedition driven by Sarah J. Germann, 41, Council Bluffs, Iowa, was northbound on U.S. 71 at Galazy Road five miles north of Marysville.&nbsp;

With lows expected to drop well below freezing again later this week, it's important to make sure water pipes in your home are protected from the temperatures.&nbsp;

Spokeswoman for Missouri American Water Christie Barnhart says every year Missouri American Water puts out tips of ways to protect your pipes.&nbsp;

"They're just some easy things that can be done at an individual's place of residence that can prevent what can result in being a very costly problem to have and also one that's inconvenience," Barnhart tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "Because not only are you looking at expenses if pipes burst, you also don't have water."&nbsp;

Barnart says some simple tips to remember to keep your pipes from freezing are to keep cabinet doors open at night and to keep a small trickle running from the faucet. &nbsp;

Barnhart adds everyone should also know where the main shut off valve is in the case of pipes freezing, to avoid the expense of burst pipes flooding your home.&nbsp;

Barnhart says it's common when pipes freeze for people to think it's an issue with the water company.&nbsp;

"We do get phone calls quite often from people that experience this," Barnhart explains. "And a lot of times they don't have water and they think that there's something happened with the water company when in reality it's just their own pipes frozen."&nbsp;

She says if there are no water main breaks in your area and you have no water, more than likely it's because your pipes froze. &nbsp;

You can check Missouri American Waters website for tips to help prevent pipes from freezing during the night with the colder temperatures.&nbsp;

The colder weather could also bring snow this winter, which in most people's minds could contribute even more to pipes becoming frozen. &nbsp;

But Barnhart says actually packed snow around your water meter, could do more good&nbsp;than it does harm, as it provides insulation for the water.&nbsp;

"And a lot of times we have people that want to go check their meter or remove snow from their meter lid, and that's actually the last thing, and probably the worst thing, a person can do," Barnhart says. "Because the snow is actually insulating and if they remove the snow from the meter, or even lift the lid, that exposes that meter to that cold air which can cause a meter to bust."&nbsp;

Barnhart says Missouri American does have a significant problem with people messing with the meter and lifting the lid, and reminds everyone again to leave it alone, and if you have issues to call the water company&nbsp;

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on new charges after a holiday-weekend arrest.

On Thanksgiving Day,&nbsp;Devaries T. Smith, 37, Atchison, was arrested on&nbsp; on a U.S. Marshal’s Service warrant for an alleged probation violation, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

He remains in custody and is being held with no bond, according to online jail records.

A disruption in the supply chain has already had negative
ripple effects through the economy.

A possible rail strike looms after another railroad union
rejected an agreement brokered by the Biden administration.

Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves, the ranking
Republican on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, says there
is a very good chance Congress will have to intervene to prevent a rail strike
that could cripple the economy.

“It does worry me with Christmas coming on and what we’re
seeing,” Graves tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “We are still under Speaker Pelosi,
her leadership, up until January 3rd and she’s going to have to make
a decision.”

The possibility of a rail strike grew earlier this week when
one of the biggest rail unions rejected the compromise, joining three other
unions that contend rail freight companies haven’t agreed to ease demanding
schedules and offer paid sick time.

Unions could call for a strike as early as December 9th.

Congress has stepped in before. A strike in 1992 lasted all of
two days before Congress imposed a contract. A 1926 law governing rail
negotiations makes it very difficult for rail workers to go on strike.

Railroads
haul about 40% of the nation's freight each year. Railroads estimate a strike
would cost the national economy $2 billion a day. Trucking would not be able to
pick up the slack if railroads shut down.

Graves says the timing couldn’t be much worse with the
Christmas shopping season underway. Graves says Congress might be forced to
intervene.

“It would be nice if they could come to an agreement, but if
they won’t, then Congress needs to intervene, because it could cripple the
country,” Graves says.

Also, a
freight rail shutdown would nearly bring passenger rail to a halt. Around half
of all commuter trains run over tracks owned by freight railroads. Nearly all
long-distance Amtrak routes run over freight tracks.

Nationally, retailers appear set for this Christmas, but that
doesn’t mean they don’t have concerns about a possible rail strike.

“We
don’t see, you know, canceling Christmas and that kind of narrative,” Jess
Dankert, the vice president for supply chain at the Retail Industry Leaders
Association, Dankert said. “But I think we will see the generalized disruption
of really anything that moves by rail.”

David
Garfield, a managing director with the consulting firm AlixPartners, said a
rail strike could still impact holiday items shipped to stores later in
December, and would definitely hamper stocking of next season’s goods.

Retailers
are also concerned about online orders. Shippers like FedEx and UPS use rail
cars that hold roughly 2,000 packages in each car.

Congressman Graves:  Congress might have to intervene to prevent rail strike

The Christmas spirit will flow through downtown St. Joseph this weekend as the lights come on and even Santa will make an appearance.  

Downtown Liaison Christy George with Mosaic Life Care says the festivities in downtown St. Joseph will begin on Saturday with Small Business Saturday. 

"We want people to come downtown and shop local, really support the local merchants, not only the shops but the restaurants, and then take in the fun activities that we have planned for the lighting ceremony downtown," George tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. 

The lights will be turned on at 5:30pm tomorrow and there will be live music and fireworks following. Santa and Mrs. Clause will be there for the lighting as well. 

There will also be a chance to ride in the iconic carriages that come to downtown once again.  

Movie producer Jason Hudson says riding in the carriages brings a special feeling. 

"It's not just one small little carriage, we're talking the big Cinderella carriage, if you've never been in a Cinderella carriage it's actually a great romance night," Hudson jokes. "So, guys, get your gals downtown and win some brownie points." 

The carriage rides will run from 5 to 8pm every Saturday night starting tomorrow and running through December 17th in downtown St. Joseph.   

George says this Saturday isn't the only time things will be going on in downtown St. Joseph though during the Christmas season. 

"And we have something going on every weekend, so like starting Saturday is Small Business Saturday and the lighting ceremony," George explains. "And then the following weekend we'll have the winter princess inside the gazebo." 

George says Santa will also make an appearance in the gazebo for people to take pictures.

Feel the Christmas spirit this weekend in downtown St. Joseph

Every child deserves a good Christmas holiday, and a local radio host hopes to help.

The Gregg Lynn Christmas for Kids Toy Drive is back for its 21st year, gathering toys and donations to help give toys to children who might not have a very merry Christmas. 

JoeTown 107.5's Gregg Lynn says when the toy drive began, he helped out the Noyes Home. Lynn says the toy drive has helped him come to some striking realizations.

"A couple things, one there was a kid there that first year at the Noyes Home who had never had a Christmas tree in his house, he had never had one, never seen one, and he was a teenager," Lynn tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And the thing that struck me also was that, over the course of a few years, kids that were the same kids every year that were still there."

Since that first year serving the Noyes Home children, the toy drive has also brought on helping the YWCA, children in foster care, and Adopt-A-Family. 

Lynn who hosts the Gregg Lynn Morning Show on JoeTown 107.5 says there are a number of community members he sees every year that support the toy drive.

"People that will buy all the gifts for five kids or even ten kids and they do it every single year, and they'll even start contacting me in November hey when are the lists going up so we can look at them and pick the kids out," Lynn says.

And Lynn also receives support from several local businesses every year

"We have businesses that have sponsored and helped with this and donated money for many, many, many years," Lynn points out.

And with that combined passion for the toy drive, Lynn says it encourages him to keep doing it

"You know, I'm not going to stop until someone tells me to stop," Lynn says.

Toys can be donated for the toy drive at the JoeTown studios.  People can also donate money online or in change jars at locally owned businesses.

The finale of the toy drive will be held on Black Friday, November 25th at East Hills Mall. Lynn says Black Friday is a good time to hold the finale with all the shoppers already out and about

"We're able to convince people hey you're out buying and you're spending a ton of money, spend twenty extra dollars and bring a toy to us, and it works out pretty well that people take a few minutes," Lynn says. "And they're serious, Black Friday shoppers are very serious, they have their day planned exactly where they're going to be, at what time, or what specials going on, but they figure out a time that they can sneak out and swing by and bring us a toy."

TODAY IS THE DAY:  Christmas for Kids Toy Drive enters 21st year

We sometimes rush past Thanksgiving on our way to the
Christmas shopping season.

We shouldn’t, according to a Missouri Western State University
psychology professor.

Christine Ziemer says it’s important to pause and reflect on
all that we have to be grateful for.

“I think especially at this time of year, where we’re really focusing
on the next holiday of Christmas coming up. Right after Thanksgiving we have
Black Friday and a lot of people are thinking about what they’re going to buy and
what they’re going to get for presents for people or for themselves,” Ziemer
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “It’s nice to take a moment and just be grateful for
what you already have.”

Ziemer teaches a Transpersonal Psychology class in which she
encourages students to keep a gratitude journal, in which students record even
small things for which they are grateful.

“Over time just noticing those small things are going to
slowly shift the way that you’re thinking, the way that you’re observing the
world and what you’re focused on,” according to Ziemer. “And so, you can focus
on all the things that are wrong and that you wish were different or you can
start to train yourself to focus at least as much if not more on the positive
aspects and the things you’re grateful for.”

Ziemer says practicing thanksgiving for even the little things
can make a big difference.

“It gives you a really positive outlook on your life when you
start to realize the richness in all of the beautiful things that you already
have that you can be grateful for in each day,” Ziemer says.

Ziemer encourages her students to write about those things in
their lives in which they can be grateful.

“The people that wrote the gratitude entries were having
healthier practices as far as exercising more, they were going to the hospital
less, they had less illness over the course of the 10 weeks than the group that
was focusing on negative aspects of their life.”

Ziemer says when we are thankful for the good things in our
lives, it reduces stress and often leads to other healthy practices, such as
eating better and exercising.

Giving thanks really can have a positive impact on your life

NODAWAY COUNTY — A Hopkins man was killed in an accident at 3:22 p.m. Tuesday on a half mile south of Hopkins.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2011 Jeep and 2013 Volkswagon were slowed for a farm implement when the Jeep was struck from behind by a 2005 Peterbilt semi driven by John D. Paxson, 45, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

The Jeep struck the Volkswagon in front of it, left the roadway and came to rest on its wheels. The driver of the Jeep — Marcus K. Nelson, 75, Hopkins — was transported to Mosaic Maryville where he was pronounced dead. A passenger in that vehicle — Glenda L. Wyer-Nelson, 67, Hopkins — also was transported to the hospital for treatment of moderates injuries. The other drivers were not injured.

Mo. man dead after three-vehicle accident in Nodaway County

On the north side of the Buchanan County Courthouse a tree has been lit as part of an annual tradition, honoring families of those lost to crime.  

The tree lighting ceremony has been held annually for the past 25 years by the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.  

Victim Advocate with the office Siobahn Jackson says the tree has always been a symbol to honor those taken to soon by crime. 

"You'll see the majority of them are going to be homicide victims that are on the tree," Jackson tells reporters following the lighting event. "So, a lot of these families we've had contact through our office with, and we've worked with, and become close to them, so this has just been our offices way of just acknowledging them, remembering them."

Jackson says even if families affected by crime weren't able to attend, they can still come and add an ornament to the tree, whether it be a picture or just the name of a victim. 

"It's just whatever your heart leads you to make, or to buy, or if it reminds you of your loved one, put it on the tree," Jackson explains. "You know, it's a memorial to your loved one so it's your choice." 

The tree will be lit and decorated through the end of the year.  At the end of the year residents can come take their ornament home, or they will be stored at the prosecuting attorney's office until next year. 

Jackson says there hasn't been a year where the prosecuting attorney's office has not added to the tree, because crime continues to grow. 

"I think we just need to do better with resources and acknowledging when families are struggling, or people are struggling, or drug issues," Jackson says. "There's just so much that we need that we don't have and we need more people to step up and be willing to help."

Annual tree lighting ceremony honors those lost as victims of crime

Construction is now underway on the Mosaic Children's Discovery Center in downtown St. Joseph&nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care Foundation President Julie Gaddie says this is a milestone project that everyone came together on for young families in St. Joseph&nbsp;

"It really is about just looking to the future and thinking about how wonderful this community can continue to grow and to be for the families we serve," Gaddie tells reporters following a groundbreaking ceremony at the Plymouth Building.&nbsp;

Construction on the Plymouth Building in downtown St. Joseph began last week.&nbsp; Officials estimate the discovery center will be open in two years.&nbsp;

Gaddie says the foundation has worked and collaborated with numerous young families in St. Joseph on the project&nbsp;

"Some of the most exciting things about this project is we've worked about two and a half years to gain input from young families, and educators, business folks, healthcare providers, all to better understand what it is that they hope to see when the doors open in two years," Gaddie explains.&nbsp;

The project is a collaboration between the Mosaic Life Care Foundation, Mosaic Life Care, Buchanan County, and city officials.&nbsp;

The future discovery center will be in the Plymouth Building in downtown St. Joseph, a former pool hall as well as the site of the former Plymouth Clothing company.&nbsp;

Gaddie says the high ceilings inside the building were one of the focal points that made it the perfect site for the discovery center&nbsp;

"All the way through the discovery center you will see extremely high ceilings which accommodate many of the exhibits and the plans that we have for the building," Gaddie says. "We have designers coming in to work on this project that are nationally known for their work in discovery centers, so we're anxious to see what they've planned, it's going to very special just for St. Joseph."&nbsp;

With construction underway Gaddie says the project will take two years to complete before the discovery center is up and running.&nbsp;

Children's Discovery Center hopes to spur growth in St. Joseph, not just downtown

A St. Joseph city councilmember has high hopes for the future
of the city’s downtown.

District Four Councilmember Michael Grimm says there is a lot
happening downtown, including the rehabilitation of the old Hatfield Building.

“You go on down the street and the old tire building is being
redone,” Grimm tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “It’s really exciting
and the city has some properties in there that are in really bad condition and
I think eventually we will get those torn down and make it so we can have new
construction there.”

Grimm says the $3 million-plus upgrade to the Civic Arena
should spur other improvements to downtown St. Joseph. The city council moved
to provide incentives to demolish the vacant Red Lion Hotel to clear the way
for a new Courtyard by Marriott. Mosaic Life Care is using a mixture of funds,
including money provided by Congress in coronavirus economic relief funds, to
create a Children’s Discovery Center downtown.

Grimm says all of that plays a role in keeping momentum going
in downtown St. Joseph.

“I think we’re seeing the business people want to move back
into downtown,” Grimm says. “One of the things people always want is a grocery
store. And I think that would be just an absolutely huge thing if one would
come to St. Joe and build in that downtown area.”

Current momentum signals bright future of downtown St. Joseph

A St. Joseph man is in serious condition after an accident early Tuesday morning on Interstate 29 in St. Joseph.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Jeep driven by Ashley N. McClellan, 26, St. Joseph, had slowed for a crash and began to merge into the passing lane, but was cut off by another vehicle. The Jeep stopped in the roadway and was struck from behind by a 2020 Toyota driven by Eddismael Pereira Ayala, 38, St. Joseph.

Ayala was transported to Mosiac Lifecare for treatment of suspected serious injuries. McClellan was not injured, the patrol reported.

St. Joseph man in serious condition after Tuesday accident on I-29

Missouri state Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer of Parkville
has been elected Majority Caucus chair, a leadership position in which he will
help shape the Republican agenda for the upcoming legislative session.

Luetkemeyer served the past two session as
Majority Whip.

“Which basically means keeping people inside the
building whenever we’re having a late-night filibuster and waking up whenever
we get quorum calls at two o’clock in the morning,” Luetkemeyer tells KFEQ/St.
Joseph Post. “So, it wasn’t the most fun job.”

Luetkemeyer, who won re-election earlier this
month, will step into the Majority Caucus chair position held by Sen. Dan
Hegeman of Cosby, who is leaving the legislature due to term limits.

“In this new role, my job is really to lead caucus
meetings,” Luetkemeyer says. “We just had our caucus retreat earlier this week
where we set priorities for the caucus for the upcoming session. I was able to
lead that meeting and I’m excited about this new role.”

Republicans once again control the Missouri
Senate.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be disagreement
on legislation this upcoming session.

Republicans elected Luetkemeyer during that caucus
retreat in Branson last week, which he says was a fairly quiet meeting.

“I will tell you in past sessions those meetings
have been fairly tense,” according to Luetkemeyer. “There has been a lot of
very impassioned disagreement I guess I would say behind closed doors whenever
we have those caucus meetings.” 

Luetkemeyer says he hopes that is a good sign of
things to come after a rocky session this year in which Republican disagreement
derailed legislation and caused ill will.

“Because, you’re right, the Senate has been
plagued with a lot of infighting within the caucus. But I did not see any
indications of that during the meeting that we just concluded.”

Missouri Republicans will once again attempt to
reform the state initiative petition process in the legislative session that
begins in January. Luetkemeyer points out Amendment Three, which legalized
recreational marijuana, went the initiative route to amend the Missouri
Constitution, rather than just change state law.

“That was a deeply flawed amendment. I mean, it
was 46 pages long,” Luetkemeyer says. “There were all kinds of provisions in
there that are going to create a lot of issues in that industry going forward.
We need to make sure that if we’re doing something as significant as amending
the Missouri Constitution, it’s done through a well thought out, deliberative
process.”

Luetkemeyer says other Republican priorities for
the upcoming session include banning transgender athletes from women’s sports
and keeping Critical Race Theory out of the classroom.

With the Thanksgiving season nearing its end, two St. Joseph city parks will light up the Christmas spirit with annual lightings. &nbsp;

St. Joseph City Manager Bryan Carter says the St. Joseph Parks Department has been hard at work getting both Krug and Hyde parks ready for Christmas.

"Getting everything started and going, set to throw the switch at Holiday Park up at Krug Park at 6 o'clock on the Friday after Thanksgiving," Carter tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "And then shortly after that go down and throw the switch at South Pole down at Hyde Park."&nbsp;

Carter says from personal experience he knows how much of a draw Holiday Park is for the St. Joseph community.&nbsp;

"Personally, I have family from a couple hours away that every year makes the trip up here, they don't come up often, but they do come up every year to go through Holiday Park and then the South Pole as well so, it draws people from all around for sure," Carter says.&nbsp;

Once the switch is flipped lights will be lit up at Krug and Hyde through January 2nd from 6 to 10pm every night, weather permitting.&nbsp;

After Thanksgiving, St. Joseph turns on the Christmas lights

A pilot was injured after failing to take off from Rosecrans
Memorial Airport shortly after noon Sunday.

Rosecrans officials report the pilot was the only one on the
privately-owned plane. As the plane began takeoff it ran off the runway and
crashed into a fence.

The pilot was taken to the hospital for treatment.

ANDREW COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Ford F250 driven by David L. Lane, 60, Oregon, Mo., was northbound on Route E one west of Rochester.

The pickup traveled off the east side of the road, struck a utility pole, continued down an embankment and came to rest in a creek.

Andrew County EMS transported passengers in the Ford Damian B. Gillenwater, 41, Oregon, a 12-year-old Oregon boy and a 13-year-old Stewartsville girl to Mosaic Life care. Lane was not injured. Lane and Gillenwater were not wearing seat belts, according to the MSHP.

CALDWELL COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8p.m. Saturday in Caldwell County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Chevy 1500 driven by a 17-year-old Cameron girl was eastbound on Barwick Drive three miles east of Cameron.

The driver attempted to avoid another vehicle entering an intersection. The pickup traveled off the south side of the road and into a&nbsp; ditch.

A private vehicle transported the teen to Cameron Regional Medical Center. She was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

The Dodge rear-ended a 2022 Chevy Colorado driven by James R. Johnson, 34, St. Joseph, who was slowing to make a left turn.

A private vehicle transported a passenger in the Dodge Hailey N. Coursen, 22, Savannah, to Mosaic Life Care. The drivers were not injured. Coursen was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

St. Joseph police plan to use extra money
approved by voters to not only fill vacancies, but enhance the police
department.

Interim Police Chief Dave Hart says there is
always room for improvement in any organization and the money raised by the
half-cent sales tax will address real needs. 

“What we want to focus on right now is making
this the best department that we can make it, so that we can attract people,”
Hart tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. &nbsp;“That’s the goal. That was the goal of the tax
was to give us the tools to attract people. And now we need to work on the
department to make it a place people want to be and people want to come to us
so that we can get back our staffing levels and get back to doing business the
way we’ve done business in the past.”

Voters overwhelmingly approved the sales tax in
the General Election, giving it 70% support.

The half-cent sales tax is projected to raise $5.5
million a year, allowing the city to raise the annual starting salary of a St.
Joseph police officer to $49,000. It also will provide enough money to pay for 3%
annual raises, in accordance with an agreement reached between city officials
and the local Fraternal Order of Police.

Hart says while the money is important, the department is
seeking those who consider police work a calling.

“To a point it has to be, because of what the job demands,”
Hart says. “If it’s just a job to you, then you’re only going to be here a
couple of years and you’re going to go do something else. It’s very demanding
and we expect a lot of our people and they deliver.”
