JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

&nbsp;On Friday, April 7, 2023, a sheriff’s deputy stopped an Infiniti passenger car near the K-16/ K116 Junction east of Holton for allegedly littering, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 During the stop the deputy located what he believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

The deputy arrested the driver of the vehicle, Jermey Allen Thomason, 36, of Atchison, on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

crises with psychology and psychiatry, not racing to puberty blockers, cross sex
hormones, and ultimately irreversible and dangerous surgeries.”

Bailey says full disclosure is the least the center can offer.

“That they at least warn the parents about the negative and irreversible
and dangerous consequences of using these kinds of experimental drugs and that
they obtain and retain valid parental consent,” Bailey says. “These are
safeguards that are common sense to protect kids and make sure parents
understand what they’re getting into.”

Transgender advocates criticize the rule and don’t like Bailey
calling transgenderism a mental health issue. But Bailey stands by his
assessment.

“The triggering mechanisms for these kinds of experimental procedures
is the claim or finding of a mental health problem,” according to Bailey who
says there must be a diagnosis of gender dysphoria before treatment becomes an
option.

Bailey’s emergency regulation highly restricts gender-transition
treatments for minors, including hormone blocking or enhancement drugs as well
as surgery.

Critics claim Bailey is acting on misleading or incorrect
information straight from the anti-trans activist playbook.

Bailey counters those pushing for gender-transition treatment
have more than their clients’ best interest at heart.

“Their business model requires that patients continue to be referred
to their clinic, that they diagnose gender dysphoria as a mental health problem
and then they peddle puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, and surgery,” according
to Bailey. “So, there’s an industry behind this that motivates what they’re
saying. They want to get paid to continue this kind of work. And, I’ll tell
you, there are ample scientific and medical evidence on my side of this issue which
says this is dangerous.”

Attorney General defends transgender emergency rule

A new sanctuary is devoting time to help those suffering from the loss of a spouse. &nbsp;

The Loss of Spouse Sanctuary was developed in 2022 in memory of Joe Tracy who envisioned the sanctuary after the loss of his wife Kathy.&nbsp;

Board member Deb Lyons says the sanctuary located just off US 71 Highway provides a retreat for those who lost a spouse.&nbsp;

"But it allows widows and widowers to relax, t0 regroup, to meet other kindred spirits that have the same issues that they do, have the same thoughts, that they just need to get together in addition to GriefShare," Lyons tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "Where they can let their hair down and try to put some fun and some joy back into their lives."&nbsp;

The sanctuary provides a space for those who are grieving the loss of a spouse; a place to get away, rejuvenate, and relax.&nbsp;

Board Vice President Jane Anderson says organizers hope the sanctuary can become a place of comfort to those who are grieving. &nbsp;

"We know grieving is different for everyone, even though it's a similar experience, and a lot of people don't want to do something on their own," Anderson explains. "So, we're not restricting it to just the widows and widowers, if they want to be comfortable and bring a friend, a family member, so the friends and family members can see what we're about."&nbsp;

Anderson says membership for the sanctuary is open to anyone who has lost a spouse. &nbsp;

"Because you can be at any age to lose your spouse," Anderson says. "So, while most people recognize that normally it's in the older generations, we do have people that have lost their spouses that are in their 20's, 30's and 40's, there is no restriction, no age limit."&nbsp;

The dispute has its origins in a decree issued by Mexico calling for GM corn for human consumption to be phased out by the end of January 2024. 

Given Mexico is the second-largest export market for U.S. corn totaling $4.792 billion in 2022, the original decree ratcheted up trade tensions between the two countries. 

Following U.S. pressure, Mexico scrapped the 2024 deadline banning GM corn for animal feed and industrial use on February 13, 2023, while retaining the ban on its use for human consumption. The experts say that “if a panel investigation goes ahead, “our expectation is that it will rule in favor of the United States.”

Academics predict USMCA dispute panel would favor U.S. over Mexico

The latest 2023 calendar year runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa, is showing improvement. 

Spring precipitation, including increased mountain snowpack and late-season plains snow, has provided improved runoff conditions. 

The 2023 calendar year runoff forecast above Sioux City is 26.4 million acre-feet, 103 percent of average. 

The runoff forecast is based on current soil moisture conditions, plains snowpack, mountain snowpack, and long-term precipitation and temperature outlooks. 

March runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City was 1.7 million acre-feet, 57 percent of average. System storage is currently 46.8 million acre-feet, 9.3 million below the top of the carryover multiple-use zone. 

Beginning in mid-March, releases from Gavins Point Dam were adjusted to provide flow support for Missouri River navigation. Navigation flow support for the Missouri River is at minimum service for the first half of the 2023 season, which began April 1 at the mouth of the river near St. Louis, Missouri.

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a theft have captured a wanted suspect.

On Saturday, police arrested 51-year-old Michael S. Sampson of Kansas City on a Jackson County Missouri warrant for larceny, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

He is being held without bond, according to online jail records.

GENTRY COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Monday in Gentry County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Express driven by Hermelindo Zecena, 22, Eagle Grove, Iowa, was westbound on Route Z two miles west of Berlin.

The van crossed the center of the road and traveled off the south side of the road. The driver overcorrected and the van overturned, returned to the road and came to rest on its wheels.

Grand River Ambulance transported Zecena and three adult passengers all from Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Mosaic in Albany. All four were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Four hospitalized after van overturns on NW Missouri highway

St. Joseph School Superintendent Gabe Edgar, in a written statement released late Monday, states he wants to continue to be part of the work of the St. Joseph School District, though he admits he had a blood alcohol content above the legal limit when pulled over Sunday, March 26th.

Edgar states he had been watching March Madness, the NCAA basketball tournament, and consumed beer throughout the course of the games. A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper pulled him over on St. Joseph Avenue that Sunday evening and administered a field sobriety test. Edgar agreed to a voluntary blood draw to determine his blood alcohol content.

"The results have indicated I was over the legal limit. I am extremely disappointed in myself and the poor judgement that I demonstrated that evening, and for this, I am sorry," Edgar says in the written statement.

Buchanan County Courthouse records indicate Edgar has been charged with misdemeanor driving-while-intoxicated.

Edgar says the district is moving in the right direction and he wants to continue to be part of the process, stating the climate and culture of the district have shown significant improvement, citing attendance is up 8% from a year ago. Edgar says the district is addressing discipline problems and overseeing the expansion of the Hillyard Technical School.

"We have good work to do in our school district, and I am proud to be part of it, and I want to continue to be part of it. Most importantly, I will hold myself accountable to my most significant priority, being the role model that our students, staff, and community deserve," Edgar writes in the conclusion of the statement.

St. Joseph School Board President David Foster also issued a written statement late Monday, saying that the Board of Education is aware of the updated status of the matter. Foster writes that the school board is evaluating its next steps with support from its legal counsel.

Supt. Edgar acknowledges BAC over legal limit; apologizes

The Missouri Western women’s basketball team announced Monday that they’re planning a 10-day trip to Greece this summer. 

The Griffons will face international competition, and will have the opportunity for additional practices to prepare for the upcoming season. These are practices they wouldn't have otherwise.

Missouri Western athletics says the team is almost halfway to their fundraising goal of $85,000 to make the trip possible.

The Griffon women will make the trip in August. The team will spend time in Athens and Santorini, and play three total games while there.

Missouri Western women's basketball announces summer trip, games in Greece

BROWN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 10:30a.m. Monday in Brown County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Eric Hertzler, 26, San Diego, California, was northbound on U.S.75. 

The driver lost control as the motorcycle began to exit to Main Street. The motorcycle landed in the ditch.

EMS transported Hertzler to the hospital in Sabetha. He was wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Rider hospitalized after motorcycle lands in ditch

A bill that would legalize sports betting in Missouri has once again hit a snag in the state legislature.

The issue, again, is whether or not video lottery machine legislation should be added to the bill.

State senator Tony Luetkemeyer of Parkville is a sponsor of a House bill that would legalize sports betting in the state. He says sports wagering and video lottery machines need to be separate issues.

"Which is why, year after year, I've sponsored a clean sports wagering bill that would only authorize sports wagering in Missouri," Luetkemeyer told KFEQ Radio, "and has nothing related to VLTs in it. We got our answer on the floor of the Senate (last) Wednesday night when it came to a vote. There were 20 votes against the amendment to put VLTs onto my bill, and only 11 votes supported it."

Luetkemeyer remains hopeful that sports wagering will be passed in the Senate this year after the House voted 118-35 in favor of it. The worry, Luetkemeyer says, is advocates of video lottery machines could filibuster the sports betting bill, and prevent it from even coming to a vote.

"The question really is will the proponents of these video lottery terminals allow the bill to come to a vote before the session," Luetkemeyer said. "Or will they, as they've done in past sessions, continue to filibuster the bill."

State Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden believes the odds of passing sports betting are low. He assigned the bill to the Senate Appropriations Committee and anticipates a hearing will take place before lengthy sessions on the House-passed budget.

Luetkemeyer says Missourians should be allowed to bet on sports if they wish. He also cites money being lost to neighboring states.

"That money, if those bets were occurring here, would be earmarked for education for our K-12 schools," he explained. He says sports wagering and video lottery machines need to be separate issues."Which is why, year after year, I've sponsored a clean sports wagering bill that would only authorize sports wagering in Missouri," Luetkemeyer told KFEQ Radio, "and has nothing related to VLTs in it. We got our answer on the floor of the Senate (last) Wednesday night when it came to a vote. There were 20 votes against the amendment to put VLTs onto my bill, and only 11 votes supported it."Luetkemeyer remains hopeful that sports wagering will be passed in the Senate this year after the House voted 118-35 in favor of it. The worry, Luetkemeyer says, is advocates of video lottery machines could filibuster the sports betting bill, and prevent it from even coming to a vote."The question really is will the proponents of these video lottery terminals allow the bill to come to a vote before the session," Luetkemeyer said. "Or will they, as they've done in past sessions, continue to filibuster the bill."State Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden believes the odds of passing sports betting are low. He assigned the bill to the Senate Appropriations Committee and anticipates a hearing will take place before lengthy sessions on the House-passed budget.Luetkemeyer says Missourians should be allowed to bet on sports if they wish. He also cites money being lost to neighboring states."That money, if those bets were occurring here, would be earmarked for education for our K-12 schools," he explained. Luetkemeyer remains hopeful that sports betting can pass in Missouri Senate

The Department of Agriculture Wednesday announced $7.6 million in funding to improve food security in Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. Territories. 

The funding seeks to increase the quantity and quality of locally grown food through small-scale gardening, herding, and livestock operations in food-insecure communities. 

USDA announced the funding as part of its Micro-Grants for Food Security Program. 

This year, the program received an additional $3 million through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. The program is authorized by the 2018 Farm Bill and awards grants to eligible states and territories through a non-competitive application process. 

USDA’s Jenny Lester Moffitt says, “Micro-Grants provide funding to ensure communities in these areas have sustained access to quality, locally grown food.” 

States and territories that receive funding will grant competitive subawards to individuals, Tribal nations, nonprofit organizations engaged in increasing food security, federally funded educational facilities, or local governments.

USDA funding to support food security in Alaska, Hawaii, US Territories

An annual fundraiser hosted by St. Joseph's Friends of the Animal Shelter will raise money to help further the building of a new animal shelter.&nbsp;

Friends of the Animal Shelters Melanie Barnes says the annual 5k Walk/Run for the Paws is one of their most popular fundraisers.&nbsp;

"Last year we had around 300, 325 participants, and so always looking to get more people out and about," Barnes tells host of the KFEQ Hotline Barry Birr. "It's a great way to get out support our local community, get active, it's around springtime, the weather is hit or miss."&nbsp;

Funds raised during the walk will go into the Wags to Wishes campaign. &nbsp;

Barnes says that money goes mostly towards the building of a new animal shelter&nbsp;

"We are still trying to fundraise to get our potential new facility renovated," Barnes says. "We've been coming a long way, it's been over many years, but this is our largest fundraiser it's usually dedicated towards that."&nbsp;

Barnes says leftover funds go towards medical expenses for pets at the shelter as well as adoption specials that Friends of the Animal Shelter holds. &nbsp;

"Throughout 2022 it seems like we were constantly running adoption specials, trying to promote the community to come down and adopt a pet," Barnes explains. "We really want to get as many adoptable pets out of the shelter and into their forever home."&nbsp;

The event will begin and end at the Bode Ice Center, with the walk kicking off at 9am on Saturday. &nbsp;

Barnes says attendees are free to walk or run the marathon, and they can also bring their dogs.&nbsp;

"So a lot of walkers come out, they're there and with their dogs, oh my gosh I see dogs in strollers, I see dogs in wagons, oh it's great," Barnes says.&nbsp;

Barnes says all they ask people is that their pets are up to date on vaccinations and are also well behaved&nbsp;

"By all means it's a great way to get your exercise in early in the day, get your dog out and get them socialized. and then go home for the day and enjoy the rest of the day," Barnes says. "So, it's really fun and as well as just if you don't want to run you don't have to."&nbsp;

Barnes says you don't even have to wear a time chip if you only wish to do the race for fun.&nbsp;

Data from USDA’s Economic Research Service shows the use of manure as a nutrient varies by type of crop. 

Between 2013 and 2019, producers of seven major crops in the U.S. who used manure were asked how much manure they applied per acre, allowing ERS to estimate crop nutrient application rates. 

Corn received the highest application rate of nitrogen from a manure source—92 pounds per acre—followed by cotton, wheat, barley, oats, soybeans, and peanuts. 

Cotton led phosphorus application at 37 pounds per acre, and corn led potassium application at 59 pounds per acre. Soybeans and peanuts require less nitrogen fertilization, and they were applied with the lowest manure nitrogen application rates. 

Manure applied to soybeans and peanuts is valued primarily for its phosphorus and potassium. In 2020, manure was applied to about eight percent of the 240.9 million acres planted to seven major U.S. field crops.

St. Joseph Mayor John Josendale says the key for the city to
progress is to talk over issues thoroughly, but then act.

Josendale gave a bullish assessment of St. Joseph during this
State of the City address on the Missouri Western State University campus while
acknowledging nagging problems, such as homelessness and panhandling.

Josendale says the theme he wants to strike is progress.

“Part of the discussion that we all try to have is making sure
you get everybody’s opinion, but then you move on it,” Josendale tells
reporters after his presentation. “You can’t always procrastinate and the city
has some really positive things going. We need to talk about those. We need to
work with those and progress.

Josendale says the city council is working to resolve the
future of I-229, to see the Children’s Discovery Center become a reality, and
continue improvements to the downtown.

The mayor credits the city staff under the leadership of City
Manager Bryan Carter for helping the council move forward.

Josendale points out many of the projects moving forward in
St. Joseph are at least partially funded through grants or money provided by
Congress through COVID relief and stimulus funding.

“As you look at some of the items that we’re working on, a lot
of them are being done with ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds. ARPA funds
have certain requirements. They have to designated by the end of ’24 and they
have to be spent by ’26,” Josendale says. “So, keeping track of those and what
we’re doing with those will be extremely important.”

The mayor says state officials in Jefferson City have been
impressed with how St. Joseph area officials work together.

Josendale tells of meeting with the Speaker of the Missouri
House, who complemented the work of the Community Alliance which brings the
city, Buchanan County, the Chamber of Commerce, the St. Joseph School District,
Mosaic Life Care, Missouri Western State University, and the Air National Guard
139th Airlift Wing together to speak with one voice.

“One of the Speaker’s comments was, there are like 80 some municipalities
in the St. Louis area, each of them is on their own. They never work together. Yet,
they may be butted up (to each other) and some of them are like 3-or-400 people,
yet they’re talking for themselves and not as a group,” Josendale says. “And we
want to present ourselves as a group working together.”

Josendale says the united front presented by St. Joseph area
officials benefits the region.

Josendale says Missouri state government under Governor Mike
Parson wants a local jurisdiction to match state funds with local money.

Mayor delivers upbeat assessment of St. Joseph's future

ATCHISON COUNTY, MO. —One person was injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Sunday in Atchison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Toyota Tacoma driven by Kolten D. Lekey, 19, Maitland, was southbound on Highway HH in Atchison ten miles east of Fairfax.

The pickup struck the drivers side of a 2015 Peterbilt semi driven by Kyland W. White, 30, Fairfax, who was pulling onto the highway from a private drive.

A private vehicle transported Lekey to Fairfax Hospital. White was not injured. Lekey was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man injured after pickup strikes a semi

ATCHISON COUNTY — On person was injured in an accident just after 4p.m. Friday in Atchison County.

According to Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson, a Ford Freestyle SUV driven by Bert Burton, 74, Atchison, was northbound on U.S.73 and was turning left (west) into the Bomgaards parking lot.

A collision occurred with a southbound Lexus Passenger car driven by James Stewart, Jr., 17, Atchison.

A Can-AM three wheel motorcycle, driven by Derek Gillmore, 58, Atchison, had been stopped eastbound at the stop sign waiting to exit the Bomgaards parking lot when it was struck following the collision of the two vehicles. 

EMS transported Burton to the hospital with injuries. Gillmore was examined by EMS at the scene but not transported.&nbsp;

Kansas man hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged aggravated battery and on Saturday asked the public's for help to locate 37-year-old&nbsp;Ricardo A. Herron, according to the Hiawatha Police Department.

 Herron was last known to be living in the city of Atchison, Kansas. The alleged Aggravated Battery which occurred in the City of Hiawatha, Kansas.

Police ask for help to locate aggravated battery suspect

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen in connection with a stolen gun.

On April 5, the parent of a 15-year-boy in Atchison spoke to a police officer after she found a handgun in the boy's room at their home, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Police recovered the gun and determined that it had been reported stolen in July 2022. Police arrested the teen and later released him to a parent, according to Wilson.

A minor league football team in St. Joseph is set to open its seventh season of competition this weekend.

The St. Joseph Swarm will take on the First City Cavalry from Leavenworth, Kansas this Saturday at 3 p.m. at Central High School's Noyes Field.&nbsp;Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 6-12.

Jaime Saucedo is the head coach of the Swarm. He and his wife, Jessica, run the organization. He says the purpose of the Swarm is largely player development.

"It's more of a club football team that we're trying to develop into a professional minor league in the next few years," Saucedo told St. Joseph Post. "It's kind of leveled like minor league baseball. There's 3A, 2A, 1A. We're in a 3A league. It's kind of like college football. There's national rankings and those sort of things."

The Swarm played and practiced in Chillicothe for their first five years and made the move to St. Joseph last season. The Swarm compete in the Heartland Football Association, which features teams from Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.

The Swarm does a lot of volunteer work in St. Joseph as well, helping the St. Joseph YMCA, the Noyes Home for Children and they helped run the annual Turkey Trot 5K run.

The Swarm&nbsp;started practicing in St. Joseph last season. However, the Swarm didn't have a home field, and they played 15 games on the road.

This year, the Swarm will play nine total regular season games - six of those in St. Joseph. Saucedo says the St. Joseph School District is loaning them both Central's Noyes Field and Benton's Sparks Field for the home games.

"They've been very accommodating in helping us out with anything we need and with communication," Saucedo said of the District . "It's been really good so far."

The Swarm had a successful 10-5 season in 2022, winning a Midwest Regional Football League title and qualifying for the Heartland Football Association Playoffs.

Considered to be a club team that develops players ages 18 and up, the Swarm began recruiting St. Joseph area players to its team last year.

Saucedo says being in St. Joseph has improved the team's overall talent level.

The Swarm currently has 31 players listed on its online roster - many of them from the local area.

"We struggled when in Chillicothe," Saucedo said. "We were like a 1A school in a 6A league. Immediately upon moving to St. Joseph, with the talent around here, 10 wins last season, a lower league championship and making the playoffs in the big leagues."

St. Joseph Swarm set to open 2023 season on Saturday at Noyes Field

A new headquarters for the Air National Guard 139th Airlift Wing at Rosecrans Memorial Airport opens the door for more opportunities at Rosecrans. &nbsp;

St. Joseph Third District Councilmember Andy Trout says part of moving many utilities at the 139th from the south to the north is an opportunity for more advancements with a new and better airport.&nbsp;

"It'll be new ramp space to park, it will have lots and lots of new features, a lot of new concrete out there, we'll have a new terminal, a new restaurant, the diner out there is great, but they'll have a brand-new space with brand new everything, it will be really really nice, " Trout tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "For the first time we'll have a place to house our snow removal equipment."&nbsp;

Trout says the renovations include a new firehouse. &nbsp;

The 139th is moving from its current location to a new headquarters now under construction to the north, out of the airport’s flood plain.&nbsp;

Improvements being made by the Air National Guard base at Rosecrans Memorial Airport could also provide more opportunity for economic growth in St. Joseph. &nbsp;

Trout says the new 139th Airlift Wing headquarters under construction at Rosecrans opens the door for other economic potential in the city. &nbsp;

"Particularly once the 139th abandons the south campus and moves their buildings all up north, that will create a lot of potential," Trout explains. "The one downside is it's across the river, now that the rivers changed, but it's just not that far away."&nbsp;

Trout says there are a lot of businesses that require some close relationship with an airport for traffic and people coming in to work close by here in St. Joseph.&nbsp;

Potential improvements could be coming to the planes flown by the 139th Airlift Wing headquartered at Rosecrans Memorial Airport&nbsp;

St. Joseph Third District Councilmember Andy Trout says currently the 139th has five H-model C-130's but remains optimistic it soon can upgrade to the J Model.&nbsp;

"Which is the more advanced C-130, little longer, better engines, less fuel burn, it's just all around a much better jet than the H Models we have currently," Trout says. "And the comment was made that they may have the 130 J's before they get the new prop hubs for the H Models, so that would be an outstanding thing."&nbsp;

Trout says an upgrade of the planes combined with the new headquarters under construction at Rosecrans will improve the mission of the 139th.&nbsp;

Rosecrans undergoing massive improvements with Air Guard and city

A new report says Ford will keep AM radios in certain vehicles. 

The company plans to exclude AM radio from “most new and updated vehicles we bring to market” but also says commercial vehicles will continue to have AM radios. 

A Ford Authority report says, “This group of vehicles will likely consist of vehicles that count toward Ford Pro sales – the automaker’s commercial-focused division.” 

A new report says Ford will keep AM radios in certain vehicles. The company plans to exclude AM radio from “most new and updated vehicles we bring to market” but also says commercial vehicles will continue to have AM radios. A Ford Authority report says, “This group of vehicles will likely consist of vehicles that count toward Ford Pro sales – the automaker’s commercial-focused division.” The report also says it’s not, by any means, a given because Ford could ditch the feature in some or all of those vehicles as well. So far, a total of eight automakers say they will remove AM radio from the dashboards of some of their models, mostly in the fast-growing electric vehicle segment. In a series of letters, none of the eight are signaling any second thoughts despite the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s push about the critical role AM plays in delivering public safety information.
