NODAWAY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 8p.m. Monday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chevy Silverado driven by Jesse D. Chrsitian, 33, Burlington Junction, was northbound on U.S. 71 in Wilcox.

The Silverado crossed the center line and struck a southbound 2013 Dodge Durango driven by Dillon R. Mendez, 22, Maryville. After impact the pickup overturned and came to rest on its top off the east side of the road.

Chrsitian was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Price Funeral Home. Nodaway County Ambulance transported Mendez to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Chrsitian was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

A new state grant will help the Buchanan County Sheriff's office add more force to fight the growing drug problem. &nbsp;

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says over 300-thousand dollars of state money has been given to his office in the recent grant. &nbsp;

Puett says the first round of money will help hire three new deputies as part of a new drug strike force.&nbsp;

"One of them will be a K-9 handler and so the K-9 is also going to be part of this grant," Puett tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "So, these are going to be individuals that are specifically focused on working methamphetamine, fentanyl, opioids."&nbsp;

The money will also be used to hire a new drug enforcement prosecutor as well as three new vehicles for the new forces. &nbsp;

Puett says getting new prosecutor Michelle Davidson a drug enforcement prosecutor is going to be very helpful.&nbsp;

"Those things are extremely important and we look for those opportunities to enhance our services and do other things for the community," Puett says. "And so, this is just starting to get sped up, we don't have a lot of detail that we're ready to say."&nbsp;

Puett says these new deputies will be hired, along with the K-9 unit, will specifically focus on drug trafficking into Buchanan County.&nbsp;

"They will be working in conjunction with some other entities on how drugs are being shipped into our community," Puett explains. "We are seeing significant quantities."&nbsp;

Puett says a recent search warrant by the drug task force recovered five pounds of methamphetamine at one location.&nbsp;

The Jeep rear-ended a 2015 Chevy Tahoe driven by John J. Pirruccello, 57, Cape Coral, Florida, that was stopped at a red light.

A private vehicle transported Gripka to Cameron Regional Medical Center. Cameron EMS transported a passenger in the SUV Paula R. Pirrucello to Liberty Hospital. John Pirruccello was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

2 hospitalized after DeKalb County rear-end crash

Missouri Western head football coach Matt Williamson has been relieved of his duties Sunday after his sixth year and fifth season at the helm.

 Athletic director Andy Carter made the announcement in a press release Sunday afternoon.

"After careful evaluation, we determined that a new direction was needed to help secure the future success of the program," said Carter. "We appreciate the service, commitment, and dedication that Matt, his family, and coaching staff have given to Missouri Western."

The Griffons closed the 2022 season&nbsp;Saturday with a <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/34fed053-5ca3-4634-b504-e04f6b61868c">41-0 win over Lincoln</a>, bringing their record to 5-6 on the year. It's the first losing season for Western since 2017, which was Williamson's inaugural season.

The five opponents that Missouri Western beat this season had a combined record of 15-40. The only team Western beat this season that finished above .500 was Central Oklahoma, who finished 6-5.

Without a season in 2020 due to COVID-19, Williamson concludes his tenure with a 31-26 record, and a 29-26 mark in MIAA play.

He led the Griffons to Live United Bowl victories in 2018 and '19, peaking with a 9-3 record in 2019. Williamson led the Griffons to three straight winning seasons in '18, '19 and again in 2021.

During Williamson's time, Missouri Western never made the playoffs and were 0-5 against top rival Northwest Missouri State. The Griffons were also 2-11 against ranked opponents under Williamson, with wins coming over No. 5 Fort Hays State in 2018 and then 25th-ranked Hays in '19.

A three-time All-MIAA defensive lineman at Missouri Western, Williamson began his coaching career with the Griffons as a graduate assistant in 1997. He returned as defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator from 2000-06.

He then went to Central Arkansas, first as defensive line and special teams coordinator from 2007-09 and then as defensive coordinator from 2010-2013.

Williamson was then Stephen F. Austin's defensive coordinator from 2014-2016 before taking over his alma mater's program in 2017.

Williamson succeeded long time head football coach Jerry Partridge, who coached the Griffons from 1997-2016. Partridge led Missouri Western to a 149-83 record during that time - a tenure that included an MIAA championship in 2012 and four total playoff berths.

A national search for the next Missouri Western head football coach will begin immediately, according to the release.

Carter will address the public on this decision during the Missouri Western coaches' luncheon at Hi-Ho Bar and Grill in St. Joseph on Monday, November 14 at noon central. The luncheon will be broadcast live on JoeTown 107.5 FM and 1550 AM.

MWSU head football coach Matt Williamson fired Sunday after six years

MERCER COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Friday in Mercer County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Ford Expedition driven by Kim M. Brewer, 65, Kansas City, Mo., was northbound on Route B five miles east of Cainsville.

The SUV traveled off the east side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle traveled off the west side of the road.

Mercer County EMS transported Brewer to Harrison County Community Hospital. She was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Missouri woman hospitalized after SUV accident

KANSAS CITY — A St. Joseph, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for possessing methamphetamine and heroin to distribute and illegally possessing firearms, according to the United State's Attorney.

Matthew J. Crossfield, 40, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to 15 years in federal prison without parole.

On June 1, 2022, Crossfield pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, one count of possessing heroin with the intent to distribute, and two counts of possessing firearms in furtherance of drug-trafficking crimes.

St. Joseph police officers were called to a Dollar General Store on Dec. 11, 2019, in response to a theft that had just occurred. An officer checked the area where the thief had fled and saw Crossfield, who matched the description of the thief, walking into Oak Ridge Apartments. When Crossfield saw the officer, he immediately ran into an apartment building. The officer followed him into the building and caught up with him on the third floor. The officer ordered Crossfield to place his hands on the wall, but Crossfield started running with the officer in pursuit. The officer eventually caught up to Crossfield, tackled him to the ground, and detained him.

Crossfield had a loaded SCCY 9mm pistol in the front waistband of his jeans. Crossfield also had a fanny pack in his front left jacket pocket, which contained a plastic bag with approximately 10.9 grams of methamphetamine, a plastic bag that contained approximately 1.4 grams of heroin, and a plastic bag that contained 11.7 grams of heroin. Crossfield had another bag in his left front jeans pocket that contained approximately 14.1 grams of methamphetamine. His right front jeans pocket contained a bag with approximately 13.8 grams of marijuana and four suboxone strips.

On Jan. 13, 2021, investigators with the Buchanan County Drug Strike Force and the St. Joseph, Police Department were conducting surveillance on Crossfield, who had two active felony warrants for his arrest. They located Crossfield, who was driving a white PT Cruiser, in the area of Illinois Street and Stockyards Expressway in St. Joseph. When Crossfield pulled into the driveway at an Arby’s restaurant, a detective pulled in front of him and an investigator pulled behind him and activated his emergency lights. When Crossfield saw the detective pull in front of him, he attempted to get away by putting his car in reverse, striking the investigator’s patrol vehicle. After striking the patrol vehicle, Crossfield placed both hands in the air.

Investigators saw a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol with an extended magazine (that contained 25 rounds) in between Crossfield’s legs. officers took Crossfield into custody and found a loaded KelTec .22-caliber handgun in his back pocket. Crossfield also had a belt around his waist (under his shirt) that contained a plastic bag with approximately 2.1 grams of methamphetamine, a plastic bag with approximately 14.7 grams of heroin, a plastic bag with approximately 3.4 grams of heroin, and two plastic bags with approximately 20-25 ecstasy pills. Officers searched Crossfield’s vehicle and found two bags of marijuana and rolling papers, a bag of approximately 21.7 grams of methamphetamine, a bag with approximately 11.5 grams of methamphetamine, a bag with 1.6 grams of methamphetamine, a bag with 4.1 grams of methamphetamine, a jar with 92.4 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Crossfield told investigators he had been selling 10 ounces of heroin every eight days since approximately August 2020. He also admitted he had been selling drugs since he was released from prison in 2018.

St. Joseph man sentenced for meth, heroin trafficking 

ATCHISON COUNTY—A Kansas teen accused of domestic battery is back in jail.

On Wednesday, police arrested 18-year-old Trent A. Thompson of Atchison, on a Community Corrections detain order, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

On September 19, police arrested Trent A. Thompson on a requested charge of domestic battery in the 1200 block North 6th in Atchison.

He remains in custody, according to online jail records.

St. Joseph residents will have an opportunity to honor those who have served our country this weekend as the annual Veteran's Day parade returns.  

St. Joseph Veterans Committee Chairman Paul Gatewood says this year's parade will actually be held on Saturday, the day after Veteran's Day. 

"We notice we have a low attendance if we do it during the week," Gatewood tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "So, this is the first year we're going to do it on a Saturday and see how it works out, we hope many people will come out and enjoy the parade." 

While there are a lot of positives to holding the parade on Saturday, Gatewood says there is at least one negative and that's getting students to the parade 

"If it's a school day they have transportation there, so there's pluses and minuses but we're going to see how it goes," Gatewood says. "We're going to see how Saturday works and if Saturday works really well, then I think we're going to have to go to Saturdays." 

The parade will begin at 11am on Saturday, starting from Francis Street south of City Hall, and will do a loop west to 8th street, north to Jules, and then east on Frederick back to the start. 

Gatewood says this year the committee has chosen three World War II veterans as Grand Marshalls for the parade. 

"These are guys that fought in World War II, still alive, we have PFC Cletus Swihart at 96 years old, Clarence "Bud" Modlin at 97, and then Wilbur Claude Taylor at 102 years old," Gatewood says. 

Gatewood says it's an honor to have these three men living and giving people a chance to honor them during the parade.  

Following the parade, the Veterans Committee will also hold a resource fair, at the Fulkerson Center at Missouri Western State University from 1 to 4 pm. 

Once leaving active service, many veterans may not know the resources available to help them.  

Gatewood says Vet2Vet will take place at Missouri Western Saturday, helping to provide those resources. 

"We bring resources together for veterans that maybe they didn't know they had that benefit or they want to increase a benefit," Gatewood explains. "It includes housing, employment, VA benefits, mental health, education, healthcare, every benefit we can get out there."

"We bring resources together for veterans that maybe they didn't know they had that benefit or they want to increase a benefit," Gatewood explains. "It includes housing, employment, VA benefits, mental health, education, healthcare, every benefit we can get out there."

Game Wardens search for hunter responsible for poaching 8-point buck

Federal funds have been provided across northwest Missouri to help in the mission of getting everyone high speed internet. &nbsp;

USDA Rural Development has given 58-million dollars over four different broadband companies to provide high speed internet to rural areas.&nbsp;

USDA Rural Development Missouri director Kyle Wilkens says at USDA they try to prevent any overlap with the FCC in providing broadband funds.&nbsp;

"We, before there's a problem, try to reach out to both applicants and explain there's overlap, we need to figure out who's going to take what, so one of the applications don't get kicked out for the other," Wilkens tells KFEQ Ag Director Dionne Bertling.&nbsp;

Funds provided in this round of broadband funding from USDA were given to Daviess, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Livingston, Mercer, and Nodaway counties among others.&nbsp;

Wilkens says the state of Missouri is starting to work closely with the Department of Commerce as it uses national telecommunication funds.&nbsp;

"We're trying to work as closely as we can with them on overlapping issues as well," Wilkens says. "And I think, I think, we probably have as open of a dialogue as we can and as we've had for a while, and we really hope that's going to help and make this process a little more efficient."&nbsp;

Wilkins says currently Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton, and Platte counties are not part of this round.&nbsp; However, Wilkens says applications for the next round recently closed.&nbsp;

"There is a chance that those counties could be funded through ReConnect fours program," Wilkens explains. "We won't know that probably until early spring how those applications worked out, so there's a possibility."&nbsp;

DEKALB COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Wednesday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Nissan Rogue driven by Matthew A. Hull, 40, Troutville, Virginia, was eastbound on U.S. 36 at Osborn.&nbsp;

The vehicle struck a northbound 2022 Ford Escape driven by Becky A. Luna, 73, Maysville, who was attempting to cross. Both vehicles traveled off the road and into the ditch.

Missouri woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle DeKalb Co. crash

You may have watched the HBO series or read the book "Band of Brothers", but tonight you have a chance to hear stories from someone closely involved. 

Missouri Western Director of Military and Veteran Services Chelsey Clark has invited George Luz Jr to Missouri Western.

Clark says Luz's presentation will give people an insight into the the Easy Company, which inspired the book and mini series.

"And specifically his father George Luz, whose one of the men of Easy Company," Clarke tells host of the KFEQ Hotline Barry Birr. "And so we get to see this, kind of insight, that the son of George Luz got to see with all these men, you know, growing up with them that of course none of us got to, so I'm very excited to bring this program to Missouri Western and share it with everyone."

Luz will present audio stories from men involved in the company, as well as letters from his father to each of the men.

Luz says it feels like an obligation to share the stories of the troop, remembering a Christmas card his mother got from one of the men that served with his father on Christmas shortly after the passing of his father, and what it said.

"Now it's up to you and all his friends to make sure he will never be forgotten," Luz explains. "And that's the relationship these men had, was it was a very personal relationship they carried with them all the way to the end."

Luz's presentation will include audio stories from members of the company, as well as letters exchanged between his father and the men.  It will also be intertwined with his experiences knowing the men. 

Luz says while he will have his experiences to intertwine in the presentation, this is a chance to hear the stories of the company from the actual people inside it. 

"Whether it will be through audio, or in the case I've got some video of my father that I recently uncovered during Covid-19 in cleaning up I found an interview my dad had done with a local historian," Luz says. "And there was no other video of my dad talking about the war."

The presentation is free to attend and will be held on the Missouri Western Campus in Spratt 214 beginning at 6pm tonight.

A half-cent sales tax designed to increase the starting salary for St. Joseph Police officers will pass in Buchanan County.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting in Buchanan County, 13,775 people, or 70.49% of voters, voted in favor of the half-cent sales tax increase, compared to 5,767 no votes, or 29.51%.

The sales tax hike is expected to raise $5.5 million annually. It will pay for an increase in starting police pay to $49,000 a year and three percent increases annually.

The tax has a 20-year sunset clause. The St. Joseph Police Department has 23 vacancies currently as well.

Elsewhere, Republican Scott Nelson has defeated Democrat Andrew Gibson for Buchanan County commissioner. Nelson garnered 16,542 votes (68.43%) over Gibson's&nbsp; 7,602 (31.45%).

Missouri U.S. Senate and House races

Republican attorney general Eric Schmitt has defeated Democrat Trudy Busch Valentine for the U.S. Senate seat left open by Roy Blunt's retirement.

Schmitt was up 58.78% - 38.82% - leading by more than 140,000 votes, when the race was called with over 28 percent reporting.

Veteran incumbent and Republican Congressman Sam Graves has again won reelection. The Tarkio native had a heavy lead over Democratic challenger Henry Martin 71% - 26.88% with over 78 percent reporting.

Missouri State Senate and House races

Chillicothe native and Republican state congressman Rusty Black has defeated Democrat challenger Michael Baumli in District 12. With 79 percent reporting, Black was up 81.3% - 18.7%.

With 100 percent of the vote reported in State Senate District 34, Parkville native and Republican Tony Luetkemeyer has defeated Democrat challenger Sarah Shorter 59.13% - 40.87%, winning by more than 11,000 votes.

In the state house race in District 1, Republican Jeff Farnan defeated Democrat Jess Piper 75.23% - 24.77% with all precincts reporting.

Missouri Constitutional Amendment 3

With over 28 percent of the vote in here, 51.25% of voters have said no to this amendment, while 48.75% have voted yes.

This would amend the state constitution to legalize marijuana use by adults age 21 and older, and would set a 6% sales tax on marijuana sales. It would also expunge arrest and conviction records of non-violent marijuana offenses, except for driving under the influence and sales to minors.

Kansas U.S. House and governor race

With over 76 percent reporting, Republican incumbent Jake LaTurner leads Democrat Patrick Schmidt 55% - 45%.&nbsp;

With nearly 79 percent reporting, Kansas governor Laura Kelly leads Republican challenger Derek Schmidt 51% - 46%.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a Chevy Camaro driven by Charles J. Bieber, 33, Hanibal, was westbound on U.S. 36 three miles west Wheeling.

The car traveled off the road, struck a guardrail, became airborne, struck an embankment, rolled and the driver was ejected.

Bieber was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Lindley Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Missouri man dies after ejected in rollover crash

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on new charges after an arrest.

On Monday, police arrested 22-year-old Journi A. Marshall of Atchison on District Court warrants for failure to appear in court, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

On October 26, police arrested her on a requested charge of driving while suspended, according to online jail records.

In addition to the warrant, Marshall is also accused of interference with law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Wilson.

Co-chair J. L. Robertson with the Citizens for Our Police, Our
City Committee says the $5.5 million the tax is expected to raise annually will
go to recruit and retain police officers.

“Our pay is almost $7,000 under what the Buchanan County
Sheriff’s Department makes,” Robertson tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ
Hotline. “We are losing policemen, trained policemen, to other communities
around the area. And, we’re having an under-ability to recruit qualified, good
policemen.”

The issue on the ballot will pay for an agreement the city
made with the Fraternal Order of Police after St. Joseph officers protested low
pay during a picket in front of city hall.

Robertson contends passage of the measure will improve safety
in St. Joseph and might help prevent problems within St. Joseph schools. At
present, there are six police officers assigned to the St. Joseph School
District. Robertson says the city doesn’t have the money to fund all eight
officer positions designated for the schools.

Robertson says school police officers make a big difference.

“They’re creating relationships with the students. They’re
creating relationships with the administration and they have a presence there,”
according to Robertson. “Does that stop a school shooting? I don’t know. But I think
it would certainly help that initiative.”

Robertson says the money through the sales tax increase will
allow the city to increase starting police pay and give annual pay raises.

“We must, we must have the ability to recruit policemen,”
Robertson says. “We must have the ability to retain these policemen.”

The agreement worked out between the city and the FOP will
raise starting police officer pay to $49,000 with a promise to increase wages
by 3% annually. The tax has a 20-year sunset clause.

St. Joseph is authorized to have 138 commissioned officers.
The St. Joseph Police Department has 23 vacancies.

A northwest Missouri state representative leaving the House
due to term limits has landed a state job.

Governor Mike Parson has appointed Representative Allen
Andrews, a Republican from Grant City, as the Security Director of the Missouri
Division of Employment. The division is part of the Missouri Department of
Labor and Industrial Relations.

Andrews has been the representative of the Missouri 1st
House District since 2015. He is president of Andrews Family Corporation, a
manufacturing business.

Andrews, a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, is currently a member of the Northwest
Missouri Enterprise Facilitation, National Federation&nbsp;of Independent
Business, and Missouri Farm&nbsp;Bureau.

Republican Jeff Farnan
faces Democrat Jess Piper in the race to succeed Andrews.

NW Missouri Representative leaving House appointed to state job

Missouri voters will decide whether to legalize recreational
marijuana today, but opponents to the measure contend supporters are going
about it the wrong way.

Deputy Treasurer John Payne with <a href="https://www.legalmo22.com/">Legal Missouri 2022</a> claims
approving the Amendment Three will ease the burden on law enforcement.

“The 20,000 or so arrests that happen every year for marijuana
offenses, and about 90% of those for very minor possession, those are going to
go away,” Payne tells the Missourinet. “And that’s going to free up a lot of
law enforcement time to go after more serious crime.”

Amendment Three made it to the ballot through initiative
petition.

Payne says Legal Missouri was forced to go the petition route
and push for Amendment Three, because lawmakers failed to act.

“In a perfect world, sure, the legislature should be the ones
to do this, but the political class in this state has just refused to act and
if we waited for the politicians to actually follow the will of the people on
this, then we could be waiting for years if not decades, because they just seem
unwilling to touch this issue,” according to Payne.

But, Executive Director of <a href="https://noamendment3.com/">Save Our State</a>, Scott Dieckhaus, a former state
lawmaker from Washington, Missouri, criticizes Legal Missouri for trying to
legalize recreational marijuana by changing the state constitution.

“Over 50,000 words that would be put into our state’s
constitution and, for context, our state constitution as it currently stands is
about 222 pages,” Dieckhaus tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “So, we’re
looking at putting nearly 40 pages of additional text into the constitution dealing
with just this issue.”

Dieckhaus contends the marijuana industry, in particular those
operating under Missouri’s medical marijuana law, are pushing the constitutional
amendment to push competition out, a charge Legal Missouri disputes.

Dieckhaus expects marijuana to be legalized in Missouri,
eventually. He faults this approach, though.

weren’t voting on it again in two years,” Dieckhaus says. “But my hope is, that
if we are voting on it again in two years it’s proposed to go into statute, not
the constitution and it’s drafted with the help of other professionals to make
sure that this is good policy for Missourians.”Dieckhaus claims the amendment on the ballot today was drafted
by the marijuana industry without input from health and law enforcement
