MERCER COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 6:30p.m. Sunday in Mercer County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Isuzu Axiom driven by Jose A. Solorzano, 42, Princeton, was eastbound on U.S. 136 in Princeton.&nbsp;

The SUV traveled into the westbound lanes. A westbound 2017 Chevy Traverse driven by Jason R. Eakes, 47, Cainesville, struck the Isuzu in the passenger side.

Mercer County ambulance transported Solorzano and a passenger Julio C. De Luna, 43, Unionville, to Wright Memorial Hospital.&nbsp; Eakes was not injured.&nbsp; All were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

EMS transported Jarboe to Liberty Hospital. Desotel was not injured and properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Flu season is here, but this isn't a normal flu season. &nbsp;

Buchanan County Health Department Clinic Supervisor Holly Leslie says this year, flu numbers are on the rise earlier than usual.&nbsp;

"Flu really hit our community faster this year, we usually don't see a rise in flu cases quite this early on in the flu year, but we're seeing a lot of cases, we're seeing a lot of hospitalizations," Leslie tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "We're seeing a huge uptick in people who report that they're having fevers that aren't responding to medication and flu like symptoms."&nbsp;

Leslie says many people will normally write off flu like symptoms with many other things happening around this time of year, such as sinus problems and the weather changes. &nbsp;

In November this year Leslie says 792 flu cases were reported and as of last week there were already 303 cases in December, that's compared to only seven cases in November of last year and just under 200 in December.&nbsp;

Across the river in Doniphan County, it's not much better.&nbsp; Supervisor Sheryl Pierce at the clinic in Troy says they are also seeing an uptick in cases, however in Kansas the reporting is a little different&nbsp;

"In the state of Kansas influenza is not a reportable disease, COVID is, but influenza A and B are not a reportable disease but they are in Missouri," Pierce says. "So, we continue to get information from Mosaic especially on the number of influenza cases that have seen a Mosaic provider."&nbsp;

Pierce says from those numbers at least 15 to 20 flu cases a week are being seen.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Pierce says while most of the people 50 and older received their flu shot, the case numbers show many people getting the flu are under 50.&nbsp;

"A lot of them are four-year olds, and six-year olds, and eight-year olds, nine-year olds, and 11 year olds that have this influenza A not vaccinated where this vaccine is helpful," Pierce explains. "You need to get the vaccine in the arms to prevent hospitalization especially."&nbsp;

Pierce says it's not normal for the low number of flu shots under 50 with the health clinic going into schools, but this year she estimates only around 12 shots were given.&nbsp;

Three locations in St. Joseph are operating as emergency shelters for the homeless during the extremely cold conditions impacting the area this week.

The Community Missions Cold Weather Shelter at 927 Faraon Street, the Salvation Army at 602 Messanie Street and the YWCA Shelter at 304 North 8th Street all provide heat and needed resources for the homeless.

Kylee Strough, director of the United Way of Greater St. Joseph, says these locations will likely see an influx of people during the extremely cold nights across the region this week.

"We'll anticipate that there will be more individuals coming in on days and nights like we're having right now," Strough said. "I know prior to last night's cold, the emergency shelter the Community Missions is operating reported they housed 75 individuals when they were open in November for a couple of days for severe cold. Not in a single night, but over a course of time."

The Salvation Army of St. Joseph has extended its heating center hours from 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. The Community Missions Shelter operates nightly from 6 p.m. - 7 a.m.

Strough says there are other public places that can provide people with heat and shelter during the day if needed.

"Other places that can be warming centers include local health departments, libraries and places like that."

Strough says these emergency shelters not only provide needs for the short term, but they can also connect people with social workers and resources that can help in the long haul as well.

"They'll have a roof over their head and warm restrooms available," Strough said. "There's also going to be an opportunity to get connected to a support worker long-term. We recognize that experiencing homelessness is often not a single-night event."

Strough says people can call the AFL-CIO at 816-364-1131 or the United Way of Greater St. Joseph at 816-364-2381 if they have any questions relating to what shelter is available and what resources would be available to them at those shelters.

Emergency shelters provide refuge for the homeless in St. Joseph during extreme cold

The extreme cold temperatures being experienced in the area are not just a danger to people, but also their pets. &nbsp;

Melanie Barnes with Friends of the Animal Shelter says with temperatures as cold as they currently are, it would be a misconception to think just because they are covered with fur your pet is safe outside. &nbsp;

"When those temperatures get into those, I'm going to say single digits, let alone the negatives we're in now, that's when being outside in extended periods I'm going to say 20 minutes plus, can be life threatening to your pets," Barnes tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "And so, it is important to make sure that if we can get them inside out of that cole weather that's the best thing you can possibly do."&nbsp;

Barnes says in these cold temperatures it does not take long at all for the effects of frostbite to begin to set in on your pets or even your livestock.&nbsp;

"Very similar in our pets and livestock and usually you'll see it first, yes they are covered in hair but again that's not enough, you'll see it first in those extremities, we call them distal limbs and areas that are centered, so ear tips, noses, and feet and tails."&nbsp;

Barnes says tails and ear tips are the most common areas for pets to get frostbite because they have the least protection.&nbsp;

Barnes says if you're unable to bring a pet into your home to make sure you check their water supply every couple hours and to try to provide more insulated shelter up and away from the ground.&nbsp;

Don't forget about your pets during winter storm

Bitter cold and dangerous wind chills across northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas bring dangers to anyone daring to get out. &nbsp;

Doniphan County Health Clinic Supervisor Sheryl Pierce says there are a couple of major dangers with the cold, including hypothermia. &nbsp;

"Of course, frostbite can also happen in extreme cold weathers, especially in a car breakdown, hopefully everybody will keep their cell phones charged if you are traveling distances during this holiday time," Pierce says. "Let family members know when you're going and what time they should expect you to arrive."&nbsp;

Pierce says if you travel long distances to be careful on ice packed roads.&nbsp; She encourages people to wear multiple light layers of clothing, as well as mittens, hats, and scarves.&nbsp;

Clinic Supervisor at the Buchanan County Health Department Holly Leslie says besides those dangers of hypothermia and frostbite, if you don't dress warm enough, you could also harm your own immune system&nbsp;

"So being out in the cold for long periods of times really affects that immune system, so I'm sure your parents have always said if you go outside with your hair wet, you're going catch pneumonia, that's not really how it works but it's the same kind of principal," Leslie tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "If you're out in a cold environment it lowers your immune system which makes you more susceptible to pneumonia or viruses."&nbsp;

While it's recommended you stay home as much as possible, the two local health department supervisors say if you have to get out, be sure to dress warm. &nbsp;

Leslie says you should be sure to follow the proper precautions if you have to get out in the cold&nbsp;

"If you have coats bundle up, gloves are especially important, cover your face with masks, scarves, hats, those kinds of things if you have them," Leslie says.&nbsp;

Doniphan County Clinic Supervisor Sheryl Pierce says a hat is especially important as the head is very susceptible to the cold&nbsp;

"You lose a lot of heat out of your head so wearing a hat, of course mittens, they're better then gloves but if you must wear gloves, but the mittens seem to work a little better," Pierce points out. &nbsp;

Residents urged to bundle up during this winter storm

Atchison city officials are asking residents to conserve water
after an ice jam upstream on the Missouri River dropped the river’s levels and
threatened the water supply for the city.

Officials in the northeast Kansas city point out the Missouri
River level has already been lowered by persistent drought in the upper
Missouri River basin. The auxiliary pump is doing its job, according to Atchison
officials, but officials worry the sub-freezing temperatures could cause water
main breaks or other complications that would reduce the city’s three-day
supply of water.

Atchison residents are being asked to conserve water until the
emergency passes.

The St. Joseph Sports Commission announced Thursday that all Holiday Hoops Games scheduled for Thursday at Civic Arena have been canceled due to inclement weather.

The Benton/Lincoln Prep boys' and girls' doubleheader has been rescheduled for Friday with girls tip at 12 p.m. and boys at 1:30. The St. Joseph Sports Commission will seek to reschedule the other four games at a later date in January or February if possible.

St. Joseph Christian and Stewartsville/Osborn were scheduled to play a boys and girls' doubleheader Thursday. The Bishop LeBlond boys were scheduled to face West Platte, while the LeBlond girls were going to face Schuyler County Thursday as well.

St. Joseph Holiday Hoops games canceled for Thursday, Benton to play on Friday

Dangerously cold temperatures have hit the area and are expected to run through Saturday as people travel for the Christmas holiday.  

Missouri Highway Patrol Sergeant Shane Hux with Troop H in St. Joseph says with wind chills that could dip as low as 40 below in the upcoming winter storm, people should limit travel as much as possible. 

"Something happens and you're in a motor vehicle out there on the roadway, you don't have much time before hypothermia sets in things like that, so that's it's always important to be prepared," Hux tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And if you don't have to travel, unless it's an emergency, we recommend that you stay home, when weather conditions make driving hazardous drive only when it's absolutely necessary." 

Hux says if you have to get out and travel be sure to give yourself ample time to get to your destination and to be sure to reduce your speeds and following distances as you drive. 

Large amounts of snow will bring out snowplows to clear the roads for drivers. Hux says if you attempt to pass one of these plows, do so with caution.  

"Prior to passing them make sure you know which way the snow is blowing, because if it's blowing the way you're going to pass them the same direction, that is obviously going to impede your visibility," Hux says.  

Hux says it's also important to remember on the ice- and snow-covered roads to not use the cruise control in your car.

The winter storm is hitting right at the beginning of the Christmas travel period for the Missouri Highway Patrol, which runs Friday through Monday.  

Hux says with these conditions as you travel for your holiday plans, be sure to give yourself extra time to get to your destination.  

"When you're out there on the highway make sure that you increase your following distance, stopping quickly on wet, snowy, or icy roads can be hazardous or impossible, that's why we recommend that you leave five seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you," Hux says. Missouri Highway Patrol Sergeant Shane Hux with Troop H in St. Joseph says with wind chills that could dip as low as 40 below in the upcoming winter storm, people should limit travel as much as possible. "Something happens and you're in a motor vehicle out there on the roadway, you don't have much time before hypothermia sets in things like that, so that's it's always important to be prepared," Hux tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "And if you don't have to travel, unless it's an emergency, we recommend that you stay home, when weather conditions make driving hazardous drive only when it's absolutely necessary." Hux says if you have to get out and travel be sure to give yourself ample time to get to your destination and to be sure to reduce your speeds and following distances as you drive. Large amounts of snow will bring out snowplows to clear the roads for drivers. Hux says if you attempt to pass one of these plows, do so with caution. "Prior to passing them make sure you know which way the snow is blowing, because if it's blowing the way you're going to pass them the same direction, that is obviously going to impede your visibility," Hux says. Hux says it's also important to remember on the ice- and snow-covered roads to not use the cruise control in your car. Missouri teen injured after rollover accident

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas teen a second time in just over a month for alleged failure to appear in court.

On Tuesday, police arrested 18-year-old Irving A. Boldridge of Atchison&nbsp; in the 100 block North 4th Street, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

He is being held without bond on a District Court warrant for failure to appear in court and interference with law enforcement.

On Nov. 10, police arrested him for skipping an appearance in court, according to online jail records.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. Worth County EMS transported him to Andrew-Hann Funeral Home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has struggled to
hire enough snow plow drivers.

Schneider says the city should have enough drivers to handle
this storm, though the city is having the same problem recruiting drivers that
the state is having.

Schneider says city crews have been pre-treating city streets.
Schneider wants residents to take this storm seriously.

“I know it’s getting really close to Christmas, but, boy, if
you don’t have to get out, I would suggest (you) stay home,” Schneider says. “If
you do have to get out and you see any of our big, yellow trucks coming, or any
emergency vehicle for that matter, please give them all as wide a berth as you
possibly can.”

It is the bitter cold that distinguishes this winter storm.

The NWS forecast a high of only -1 Thursday with wind chills
dipping to between -20 to -30 due to blustery, north-northwest winds of 23 to
26 miles per hour. The weather service expects the low Thursday night to drop
to -9 with windchills of between -27 and -32. The high Friday should reach 4
with a high on Christmas Eve of 11.

St. Joseph, entire area, braces for snow, bitter cold

A nationally known economist expects inflation to ease next
year, though higher wages will make it a stubborn problem.

Economist Chris Kuehl, managing director of Armada Corporate
Intelligence, recently spoke to the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce Economic
Development Summit. Kuehl sees a tough couple of quarters ahead, but a growing
economy toward the end of the year.

Kuehl says federal spending during the coronavirus pandemic
and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine drove inflation early. Rising wages are
driving inflation now.

“And that’s the hardest one to deal with, because once wages
go up, they don’t come back down,” Kuehl tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Kuehl warns that the first of the new year could be rocky. He
expects the economy to shake off some of the stubborn problems which have been
dragging it down toward the end of the year.

“Always, there are the potential flies in the ointment,” Kuehl
says. “But (the) worker shortage is probably the single biggest threat and that
is one of the things that positions this area fairly well.”

Kuehl says Missouri Western State University, North Central
Missouri College, Hillyard Technical Center, and other educational institutions
have been focusing on training workers for the positions most needed. He says
that isn’t happening everywhere.

Kuehl says the sectors of aerospace and automotive have
remained strong throughout. Agriculture is doing well, though it has been
caught between big profits and big costs.

“Agriculture is doing fairly well, but it’s caught kind of in
a vice,” Kuehl says. “It’s seen very high prices, which is good, but they have also
seen very high input costs. So, the farmer has been fighting high fertilizer
costs, high diesel fuel costs. Those things are chipping away at the fact that
they’ve also seen high prices for their harvest.”

Kuehl says there is a very real global food shortage, mainly
stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia produce 25% of
the world’s wheat and 15% of the world’s corn.

Economist sees hope amid the doom and gloom of the current economy

With Christmas around the corner and people finishing up their holiday shopping, people should be aware of any Grinches that are out and about.

Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett says now is the time of year where people are having packages stolen, whether it be from their porch or even their cars. 

Puett says as you have packages delivered to your homes, you should be aware of these thieves that can move quickly. 

"Often times they're driving down the street with the door open so they can run and jump back in the vehicle, but they're driving and they just look for packages and they'll go up and grab them and throw them in the car and then off they go," Puett tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. "So, if you have cameras, and Ring doorbell stuff, and that type of stuff make sure that's in place."

Puett says if you are not going to be home when a package arrives, you should consider different options to ensure you get your package securely. 

"Watch your mail, watch your packages get them collected, or if you're going to be gone have a neighbor collect them, or a lot of employers will allow you to have stuff delivered to work so you can get it there," Puett points out. "Look at those things." 

Puett says thieves will also take gifts from vehicles.  He says if you are out shopping to be sure your packages and valuables are not on display for everyone to see

"Put the packages in the trunk or in the back of the vehicle, cover them with something, don't leave a wallet and a phone laying out in the seat and run into the store or anything like that," Puett explains. "You know, people are somehow shocked because they lose packages, it takes about three seconds to bust a window and reach in and grab the stuff and be gone."

Puett says people should be sure to lock their vehicles if they are going to carry items of value inside the vehicle.

Beware the porch pirate this holiday season

St. Joseph is set to receive $25 million for sewer upgrades
with passage of the Water Resources Development Act by Congress.

The act, tucked into the National Defense Authorization Act,
authorizes $50 million dollars for sewer and stormwater projects throughout
northern Missouri. Northern Missouri Congressman Sam Graves’ office reports St.
Joseph will receive half that amount.

St. Joseph Public Works Director Abe Forney says $20 million will
be used to comply with new EPA requirements on phosphorus, with $5 million
scheduled to replace the old, brick sewer lines that lets groundwater seep in.

“These EPA regulations have been extremely hard for
municipalities financially to keep up with and this money is going to be a huge
step in getting us compliant with those regulations,” Forney tells KFEQ/St.
Joseph Post.

the money will help offset the rising cost of complying with existing and new
federal regulations.

“So, any number of these changes is very costly anymore,”
Schneider tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Sewer rates have been a bone of contention among St. Joseph
residents, who have rarely hesitated to complain about their rising cost. The city
has responded that the cost of keeping up with increased federal regulations has
driven up sewer rates.

In a news release, Congressman Graves applauded the efforts of
St. Joseph city officials to freeze sewer rates in 2018.

Forney, though, can’t rule out further rate hikes if the EPA
pushes further federal regulations. For now, though, this federal funding will
help offset the cost of complying with the new phosphorous regulations without
requiring an increase in sewer rates.

“But this amount of money that we receive will upgrade our
existing system and it will be money we, as the city, do not have to pay for these
EPA regulations,” Forney says.

The Congressman’s office does point out that once the Water
Resources Development Act of 2022 is signed into law by the president, funding
will still need to be appropriated by Congress for St. Joseph to receive it.
Graves says securing that funding will be a top priority of his in the upcoming
session of Congress.

The Salvation Army Red Kettle drive is nearing its end and, with just five days left, donations are down. &nbsp;

Major Ronald Key with the St. Joseph Salvation Army says as of last week, donations were 60 percent to 70 percent toward the goal of raising $358,000. &nbsp;

Key says there are a couple different ways people can help reach that goal, whether it be donating additional funds, or even just their time.&nbsp;

"They could also volunteer to ring a bell the last week, that's another way they can help us to raise the funds that we need," Key tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So, there's lots of different ways they could do that for us."&nbsp;

Key says if they are not able to reach the goal, there are a couple of different things that could happen with the money that has been raised. &nbsp;

"Either we help the same amount of people with less money or we help less people with the money that we have, so it just kind of depends on that," Key says. "So, we would like to help at least the same amount of people, if not more, but if we don't reach that kettle goal that would be accomplished there would just be less, we could help them with."&nbsp;

"So, there's that opportunity and as a volunteer you can volunteer to work wherever you want inside, outside, whatever that looks like for you, so you get that first choice."&nbsp;

Key says volunteering is one way people can help reach the fundraising goal. The Red Kettle Drive ends on Christmas Eve Saturday.&nbsp;

Missouri Western State University has received prestigious
national recognition for its education department.

Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy reports the
university’s Education Department has won full, unqualified national
accreditation from the Council for Accreditation Educator Preparation. 

“This is a difference maker,” according to Kennedy. “This is
what says Missouri Western’s education program is really one of the top
high-quality programs. And to achieve accreditation without any consideration
or any minor issue even; it’s a great testimony to the talent of our faculty.”

Kennedy says the accreditation from the Council is a big
selling point for the university. Kennedy says she’s proud of that, but also
proud that the department is serving area school districts.

“Their needs and what they’re looking for,” Kennedy says. “Are
we engaged in best practices? Are we using pedagogy that is really going to

national recognition for its education department.Missouri Western President Elizabeth Kennedy reports the
university’s Education Department has won full, unqualified national
accreditation from the Council for Accreditation Educator Preparation. “This is a difference maker,” according to Kennedy. “This is
what says Missouri Western’s education program is really one of the top
high-quality programs. And to achieve accreditation without any consideration
or any minor issue even; it’s a great testimony to the talent of our faculty.”Kennedy says the accreditation from the Council is a big
selling point for the university. Kennedy says she’s proud of that, but also
proud that the department is serving area school districts.“Their needs and what they’re looking for,” Kennedy says. “Are
we engaged in best practices? Are we using pedagogy that is really going to

of a shift to say our hero on the white horse isn’t going to come,” Kennedy
says. “We need to figure out what our answers are on our own. What are the
