Leading up to an Elite Eight matchup with Grand Valley State in March 2022, a video feature about Candi Whitaker went viral on the Missouri Western athletics' Twitter page.

It was&nbsp;a six-minute feature, spotlighting Whitaker's unique and at times challenging journey in coaching.

Whitaker was fired as the head coach of her alma mater, Texas Tech, on New Year's Day 2018 while eight weeks pregnant. She told Griffon Sports Insider about that experience in 2022, recalling, "I was still searching my soul. Do I want to jump back into this profession?"

"Ultimately, I didn't know if I wanted to coach again," she said, recalling getting offered Missouri Western in 2019.

"So, I felt like until I coach again, I won't know if I want to coach again. So, I took the job."

The athletic director who gave her the chance, Josh Looney, left Missouri Western in August 2021 to take the A.D. role at Division I North Alabama.

Whitaker, who has 11 years of experience as a Division I head coach, is joining Looney there. <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/2d7a1e70-209e-4807-aa1c-23ab926ff51b">The Lions hired Whitaker Monday</a> to become their next head women's basketball coach after Missy Tiber's contract was not renewed after 11 seasons.

North Alabama women's basketball finished with a 12-18 mark this past season.

It wasn't the deciding factor, but it put Whitaker at ease, knowing she'd get to work for Looney - the one who reignited her love of coaching.

"There's less curiosity," Whitaker said in a sit-down interview with KFEQ Radio on Tuesday. "When you work for someone you don't know, you don't exactly know how that might go. So, that clearly played a role in me feeling comfortable at North Alabama and taking this opportunity."

Whitaker goes to a North Alabama program that made the switch from DII to DI in 2018. UNA is a member of the ASUN Conference. The school is located in Florence, Alabama - a small, but growing city located in a quad cities area known as the Shoals in the northwest part of the state.

Whitaker went to visit the campus last week - several days after Missouri Western's loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Minnesota State on March 15.

Whitaker said Monday that two questions had to be answered before she accepted the job - can she win there, and is it the right move for her husband, Matt, and their sons, Weston, Will, and Callahan?

Whitaker believes North Alabama met that criteria and then some.

"I think Josh (Looney) has made a tremendous impact in a short amount of time," Whitaker said. "The campus is booming, which is a great sign in these times where a lot of universities are struggling. Everything is pointing to growth and ability there to do something special."

Whitaker says she'll head back to Florence as soon as next week. Her introductory press conference will be scheduled in the coming days.

As Whitaker reflects on five largely successful years at Missouri Western, she wants Griffon fans to know her and her family's gratitude for their time in St. Joseph.

"I first want people to know how grateful we are for our time here and the opportunity," she said.

Whitaker went 100-47 in five years with the Griffons, leading the team to 21 wins or more in four out of her five seasons. Western won a minimum 24 games in each of the last three years under her leadership.

She led the Griffons to a Central Region championship and Elite Eight berth in 2022, and then an outright MIAA regular season title in 2024.

The MIAA title was enough to earn Whitaker the Coach of the Year nod from the conference this past season as well.

The wins and the trophies are nice, but Whitaker hopes Griffon fans and onlookers also remember how her teams were able to be so successful.

"I think our teams have played really great basketball," she said. "I've been a fan of watching them play, how they share the ball, how they pass the ball and just how they played the game."

"That was always a big focus for us. We wanted to play a great and upbeat style - a style that people would appreciate. I think we did that and we won doing it."

Whitaker to MWSU community: 'I want people to know how grateful we are'

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an illegal immigrant on accusations after a traffic stop.

Just before 10:30p.m. March 22,&nbsp;a sheriff's deputy initiated a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 36 in Brown County a vehicle traveling 77mph in a 65mph zone, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

 Upon contact with the driver identified as 26-year-old Wilmar Aguilar of Denver Colorado, the deputy detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.&nbsp; 

Aguilar could not speak English so the deputy used a translator phone to effectively communicate and it was learned that she was not a US citizen and therefore did not possess a valid drivers license.&nbsp;

 Aguilar was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving Without License.&nbsp; The deputy was notified that prior to his stop, this vehicle was called in as a reckless driver. ICE and Department of Homeland Security were notified and the sheriff's office was&nbsp; advised that no detainer will be placed on Aguilar.&nbsp; She is no longer in custody.

A local sanctuary just outside of Savannah has been helping provide widows and widowers with an escape from loss over the past year.  

The Loss of Spouse Sanctuary provides several events and activities to bring like-minded individuals together to help refocus on themselves.  

Board member Debbie Lyons says the purpose of the sanctuary is to help widows and widowers relax, rejuvenate, and refocus on being me instead of we. 

"It is a social cry centered club for widows and widowers to get together, who understand how each other feels," Lyons tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "And we do so many, so many fun things to get them to find their joy again, to laugh with other like-minded individuals, to be able to find that joy that is missing when you are so lonely and lost without your spouse." 

The Sanctuary has grown since its establishment in 2022, seeing more than 50 people come and join at the retreat 

Lyons says they hold a bible study every Tuesday, but there are several other events to help bring people together.  

"We do Saturday afternoon crafts, or game days, during the winter we did all afternoons because of the dark driving out on 71 Highway," Lyons explains. "But we do game night, we have movie night, we go out and eat lunch together sometimes in the daytime." 

Lyons says they are also planning several summer events, including a fully loaded fishing pond that is on the property.  

The Sanctuary is designed as an extension of the Griefshare program, helping out those who lost a loved one rediscover the joy in their lives.  

Lyons says one of her greatest joys is watching people as they go through that journey. 

"Knowing them from day one of their intense grief to seeing them get through loss and the smiles and the laughter and just, I'm going to tear up because it's so emotional to me, the joy on their faces when they are actually out and about socializing again is a God thing, it is a God thing," Lyons says.

The Mavericks (30-5), who beat Missouri Western in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 15, will now face Cal State-San Marcos (27-6) on Wednesday night at 8:30 in the national semifinals.

Cal State-San Marcos defeated Gannon 85-80, Monday evening.

Other results Ferris State 60 Tampa 53 Texas Woman’s 76 Daemen 44

Texas Woman’s (33-4) and Ferris (26-5) will meet in the Final Four on Wednesday night at 6.

Division II Final Four matchups set for Wednesday night in St. Joseph

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — President Joe Biden has won Missouri’s primary, the state Democratic Party announced.

Biden’s win was not in doubt; he has already&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-biden-primary-georgia-washington-mississippi-hawaii-15bb0084ad656903ffef14cfae822abd">beaten his major competitors</a>. But the primary races are still closely watched by insiders for turnout and signs of protest voters.

Saturday’s primary was the Missouri Democratic Party’s first party-run presidential contest since a new law took effect in August 2022.

The party says about 20,000 voters participated.

Missouri Republicans opted to hold a caucus this year, which former President Donald Trump won.

Lawmakers have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/presidential-caucus-primary-idaho-missouri-848804f822975481c69765e7b0f60878?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">failed to reinstate</a>&nbsp;the state-run primary despite calls to do so by both state Republican and Democratic party leaders.

Asked about the possibility of future defamation litigation against public officials, an attorney working as Denton Loudermill’s legal advocate said: ‘We are just getting started’

Denton “Denny” Loudermill, the Kansas man who was erroneously accused of being the shooter at the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade, has filed a defamation suit against U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas, alleges Burchett shared photos of Loudermill on his personal social media account saying he was one of the shooters and referring to him as an “illegal alien.”

Loudermill, a native of Olathe, Kansas, attended the parade celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win. An argument broke out during the parade and ended in the shooting, which killed one person and wounded more than 20 people.

Loudermill’s lawsuit states that he attended the parade and was detained by police following the shooting for “moving too slow” as law enforcement was clearing the area. As he sat on a curb in handcuffs, people took photos of him and shared them on social media, according to the complaint.

Police did not charge Loudermill with any crime.

Burchett later deleted the tweet but included&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/timburchett/status/1759645965445636470?s=20">a screenshot</a>&nbsp;of it that is still visible in a separate post.

Attorneys for Loudermilk allege he has received death threats as a result of Burchett’s post on X, formerly known as Twitter, and are asking $75,000 in damages for acts considered “willful, wanton, reckless and malicious.”

A spokesman for Burchett said: “Our office is not able to comment on pending or active litigation.”

In February, Loudermill&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/02/29/wrongly-accused-kansas-city-shooting-defamation-missouri/">told The Independen</a>t that “sometimes I’m afraid to go outside of my house or think that somebody who’s going to come into my house because some people probably don’t even see that I was innocent.”

Loudermill’s lawsuit did not include several members of the Missouri Senate Freedom Caucus, who also helped spread incorrect information about Loudermill and the mass shooting on social media.

Asked about the possibility of future defamation litigation against other public officials, LaRonna Lassiter Saunders, an attorney working as Loudermill’s legal advocate, said in an email to The Independent: “We are just getting started.”

Man wrongly accused in KC rally shooting sues Tennessee congressman over social media posts

It laid dormant for years. Now, interest in the Missouri
low-interest loan program, called MO BUCKS, has risen along with interest
rates.

State Treasurer Vivek Malek says his office distributed $500 million
in MO BUCKS loans last year, hit the state cap and closed. It re-opened January
2nd with $120 million available.

“I was hoping that it would be open for at least for two
weeks, but to our own surprise, we received enough applications to close the
program again within six hours,” Malek tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

Malek says how swiftly the $120 million was snapped up shocked
him.

“All the $120 million was called for within six hours,” Malek
says. “So that shows how huge the demand is for the MO BUCKS program,
especially in the farming community and the small business community.”

Malek says demand rose from farmers seeking low-interest loans
to cope with the financial impact of the lingering drought in parts of
Missouri.

Malek has asked the state legislature to expand the program by
$400 million. The current cap is $800 million.

“That may not be enough, but we hope that the feds will bring
down the rates and that will probably ease the demand a little bit.”

MO BUCKS was created during the recession of the 1980s, a
recession that drove up interest rates and hit the rural economy hard. It
became a lifeline for farmers and small business owners.

The Federal Reserve has moved over the years to reduced
interest rates to stimulate the economy. The Fed took a different tack as
inflation returned, raising rates in an effort to bring inflation down. In
between the high-interest rates of the 80s and the low interest rates of the
past few years, the MO BUCKS program went into hibernation. Few remember it.
Malek says that even among bankers the program had been forgotten.

“There’s not much education on MO BUCKS. We don’t have a
marketing budget for MO BUCKS,” Malek explains. “So, I toured about 45
counties, rural counties especially, last fall, talking to chambers of
commerce, talking to officials, (in) courthouses, different media houses to
kind of alleviate and bring that education up with folks that, hey, there is a
way that can help you during these high-interest times and we can help.”

The MO BUCKS program provides interest rates approximately 30%
below the market rate. About 40% of the loans go to farmers with 60% to small
businesses.

low-interest loan program, called MO BUCKS, has risen along with interest
rates.State Treasurer Vivek Malek says his office distributed $500 million
in MO BUCKS loans last year, hit the state cap and closed. It re-opened January
2nd with $120 million available.“I was hoping that it would be open for at least for two
weeks, but to our own surprise, we received enough applications to close the
program again within six hours,” Malek tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.Malek says how swiftly the $120 million was snapped up shocked
him.“All the $120 million was called for within six hours,” Malek
says. “So that shows how huge the demand is for the MO BUCKS program,
especially in the farming community and the small business community.”Malek says demand rose from farmers seeking low-interest loans
to cope with the financial impact of the lingering drought in parts of
Missouri.Malek has asked the state legislature to expand the program by
$400 million. The current cap is $800 million.“That may not be enough, but we hope that the feds will bring
down the rates and that will probably ease the demand a little bit.”MO BUCKS was created during the recession of the 1980s, a
recession that drove up interest rates and hit the rural economy hard. It
became a lifeline for farmers and small business owners.The Federal Reserve has moved over the years to reduced
interest rates to stimulate the economy. The Fed took a different tack as
inflation returned, raising rates in an effort to bring inflation down. In
between the high-interest rates of the 80s and the low interest rates of the
past few years, the MO BUCKS program went into hibernation. Few remember it.

Nearly forgotten MO BUCKS program dusted off as economy changes

A longtime GOP Congressional staffer and leader of an abandoned campaign to legalize abortion is now running for Missouri Secretary of State.&nbsp;

Jamie Corley, a Republican from University City, officially filed to run in the GOP primary on Monday. This is her first time running for public office.

“There is more to me than abortion, actually,” Corley said after making headlines for the past year for her campaign to<a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2023/12/05/missouri-abortion-2024-initiative-petition-ballot/">&nbsp;legalize the procedure up to 12 weeks&nbsp;</a>and add exceptions for victims of rape and incest.&nbsp;

She joins Republicans Valentina Gomez, a real estate investor also making her first run for office; Greene County Clerk Shane Schoeller; state Sen. Denny Hoskins of Warrensburg and state Rep. Adam Schwadron of St. Charles. The deadline to file to run in the August primary is Tuesday.

Two Democrats are also in the race: Monique Williams of St. Louis and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/government-politics/kirkwood-democrat-blasts-book-banning-in-kickoff-for-secretary-of-state-campaign/article_388e148a-e07e-11ee-9ce5-7b3dd9bdd949.html">state Rep. Barbara Phifer of Kirkwood</a>.

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, a Republican, is leaving office to run for governor.&nbsp;

Corley said she made the decision after&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/03/18/caleb-rowden-drops-out-of-gop-race-for-missouri-secretary-of-state/">Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden dropped out&nbsp;</a>of the race last week, leaving open a moderate lane.

Her resume includes several years working in communications for a handful of Republican lawmakers. Corley described herself as having a deep knowledge of banking policy after having managed the banking communications portfolio for former U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican from Tennessee.

She also noted her experience as a small business owner. In 2016 Corley created a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2017/03/141315/the-bridge-jamie-corley">nonpartisan newsletter called The Bridge</a>,&nbsp;which she later sold to her co-founder. In addition to overseeing elections, the secretary of state’s office also handles business filings.&nbsp;

“I want to make it as seamless as possible to do business in Missouri,” Corley said, describing herself as a policy-nerd rather than a “bombastic candidate.”

Corley said her experience filing several initiative petitions informed her decision to run.

Last year, she<a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/lawsuit-challenges-summary-fiscal-note-of-new-missouri-abortion-rights-petition/">&nbsp;sued Ashcroft</a>, arguing the ballot summary and fiscal note he wrote for her initiative petitions were inaccurate and unfair. She dropped the lawsuit after dropping her campaign.&nbsp;

<a target="_blank" href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/02/08/initiative-petition-abortion-rights-rape-incest-missouri/">Corley ended her abortion campaign</a>&nbsp;in February&nbsp;after she was out-fundraised by Missourians for Constitutional Freedom, a coalition whose backers include Abortion Action Missouri and Planned Parenthood that’s attempting to put a constitutional amendment on the statewide ballot that would legalize abortion up to the point of fetal viability.&nbsp;

Corley continues to lead Missouri Women and Family Research Fund, a nonprofit she launched late last year. After dropping her ballot initiative campaign, Corley said she hoped to focus her nonprofit around&nbsp;conducting data-driven research and polling to inform legislators on the effects of abortion bans.&nbsp;

“During the ballot initiative, and even before the ballot initiative, I talked to Republicans for the past two years about a really hot button issue and a lot of people opened up to me in ways that they’re not telling their Republican book club,” she said.

Corley doesn’t believe her abortion stance will affect her chances at a fair fight, adding that she’s more closely aligned with former President Donald Trump’s stance on abortion than the other Republican candidates.&nbsp;

The Republican nominee for president has said he supports a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/20/us/politics/trump-15-week-federal-abortion-ban.html">15 week federal ban.</a>

“These candidates who just insist on defending this abortion ban,” Corley said, “you’re really bucking President Trump and that’s a strategic decision they’ll have to make.”&nbsp;

Leader of defunct abortion-rights campaign launches bid for Missouri Secretary of State

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged theft.

On Friday, police arrested 33-year-old&nbsp;Scott J. Holmes of Atchison on a District Court warrant for theft by deception, according Police Chief Mike Wilson.

He bonded out of jail over the weekend. In 2008, he was jailed for alleged burglary, according to online jail records.

Candi Whitaker will coach women's basketball at the Division I level again.

Whitaker, who had led Missouri Western women's basketball since 2019, will become the next head coach at the University of North Alabama.

The news was made official in press releases by both schools late Monday afternoon.

"Coach Whitaker informed me of her decision and I am so appreciative of her character, class and leadership," MWSU Director of Athletics Andy Carter said in a statement.

"She truly made an impact at Missouri Western, elevating our program back to where it belongs in the national spotlight. I know Griffon Nation wishes her and her family the best in their new role."

North Alabama, located in Florence, Alabama, is a member of the ASUN Conference and became a Division I program in 2018 after more than 50 years as a DII institution.

North Alabama athletic director Josh Looney was Missouri Western's A.D. from 2017-2021.

It was <a href="https://gogriffons.com/news/2019/4/16/candi-whitaker-named-head-womens-basketball-coach.aspx">Looney who hired Whitaker</a> at Missouri Western in April 2019.

"We're bringing a difference maker to North Alabama with the addition of Coach Whitaker," Looney in a written statement. "Candi is a talented coach whose leadership impact expands beyond her basketball program. I'm fortunate to have worked alongside Candi previously and experienced her championship approach to program building."

"From her positive interactions as a role model for the women in her program, to her influence and engagement with University colleagues and the community at large, Coach Whitaker will make a difference at UNA and her family will be an asset to the Shoals community. Whitaker, a Canyon, Texas native, had great success with the Griffons, leading them to a 100-47 record during her tenure, including a 73-39 mark in the MIAA.

Whitaker led Missouri Western to four 2o-plus win seasons in five years in St. Joseph, including a minimum 24 wins in each of the last three seasons.

"This is a bittersweet day," Whitaker said. "I am excited about the opportunity ahead, but this was a decision that was very difficult for me, Matt and the boys. Missouri Western reignited my passion for coaching and for that I will be forever grateful."

"These past five years have been special. The MWSU staff, the St. Joseph community and our players brought to life all the things that the coaching profession should be. Our on-court success is a direct byproduct of our support system."

Whitaker led the Griffons to a <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/bd52098b-95eb-4f12-99ef-a85a735773c3">Central Region championship</a> and Elite Eight appearance in 2022. She led Western to an MIAA regular season title in 2024, and was named <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/68c27b50-9bb2-4359-a011-5a2af8c904be">MIAA Coach of the Year</a> this year as well.

Whitaker's career record in 16 years as a head coach is 231-225. She got her head coaching start just down the road at UMKC, taking over the Roos at age 26 in 2006.

She led UMKC to a 22-win season and WNIT berth in 2012. Whitaker accumulated 83 wins at UMKC, becoming that program's second most winningest coach.

She became associate head coach at Oklahoma State the following year and was then named the head coach at her alma mater, Texas Tech, in 2013.

After a little more than four seasons in Lubbock, Whitaker was fired by Tech on New Year's Day 2018. She was 54-82 in her time with the Lady Raiders, including a 13-61 mark in Big 12 play.

After taking a little more than a year off from coaching, Whitaker was hired by Western in April 2019, where she had instant success. She led Western to a 21-8 campaign in the 2019-20 season.

After only six wins in a COVID-riddled 2020-21 campaign, Whitaker engineered one of the most impressive turnarounds in Missouri Western history, leading the Griffons to a 24-win season and a Central Region championship the following year.

Whitaker led Western to a 24-7 mark in 2022-23. That team finished third in the MIAA, <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/cfde74cd-7ca6-41b9-864f-0cd6ee5c2e7c">but still missed the NCAA tournament</a>.

Whitaker's team in 2023-24 <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/f26b72fb-b94a-484d-8502-0dcead8ecf81">won the MIAA regular season championship</a> outright&nbsp; - the first time the Griffons had done that since 2016.

Missouri Western won its last 14 games of the regular season this year. The Griffons lost to Pittsburg State in the MIAA tournament semifinals, and then <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/d122a368-28f9-4d97-bccc-4ece597a7106">lost to Minnesota State in the first round</a> of the NCAA tournament this month in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Following the loss to Minnesota State, Whitaker said on Missouri Western's Hey Coach! Show at Hi-Ho Bar and Grill on March 18, "I'm fortunate to have come up here, not knowing if I wanted to coach again or not, and really enjoying my time."

"It's because of our players and support at Missouri Western. For me, everything is about my family and trying to win. Those are my two focuses, and it's been good here."

North Alabama athletics&nbsp;<a href="https://roarlions.com/news/2024/3/11/womens-basketball-una-opts-not-to-renew-contract-of-coach-missy-tiber.aspx">put out a press release on March 11</a>, saying former coach Missy Tiber's contract would not be renewed.

Tiber guided UNA to a 172-147 record over 11 seasons. The Lions went 12-18 this past year.

"My family and I could not be more excited to join the UNA family and the Shoals community," Whitaker said. "I was blown away by the campus and the city of Florence on my first visit. The community support and the rapid growth of UNA's campus and success makes it an exciting time to be a Lion."

I'd like to thank President Ken Kitts, Dr. Josh Looney and the hiring committee for this opportunity, and I am ready to get to work."

Whitaker told Griffon Sports Insider in March 2022 that before Looney offered her the job at Missouri Western, "Ultimately, I didn't know if I wanted to coach again. So, I felt like until I coach again, I won't know if I want to coach again. So, I took the job."

Whitaker helped Texas Tech to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances as a player from 2000-02. She started and played in all 64 games over two seasons under head coach Marsha Sharp while totaling 232 points, 249 assists and 87 steals. 

Prior to playing at Texas Tech, Whitaker played two seasons at Seward County Community College where she averaged 10.2 points and 10.8 assists and was named Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American.

 Whitaker's 577 career assists at Seward County is still a record and she ranks third all-time with 225 steals.

Whitaker graduated from Texas Tech in 2002 with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and earned her Master's in Sports Administration at Valparaiso in 2004. She and her husband, Matt, have three sons, Westin, William and Callahan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As for Missouri Western, a national search is underway, as Carter seeks Whitaker's successor.

"I couldn't be more excited about the trajectory of our program," Carter said. "The stage is set for us to continue an upward trend. Coach Whitaker's legacy is now a valued part of our history, and our story is still being written."

"Consider this next chapter the start of our national search. We anticipate an elite-level pool of potential candidates. We will be diligent and deliberate in finding the right fit who will continue our momentum."

She started and played in all 64 games over two seasons under head coach Marsha Sharp while totaling 232 points, 249 assists and 87 steals. Prior to playing at Texas Tech, Whitaker played two seasons at Seward County Community College where she averaged 10.2 points and 10.8 assists and was named Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American. Whitaker's 577 career assists at Seward County is still a record and she ranks third all-time with 225 steals.Whitaker graduated from Texas Tech in 2002 with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and earned her Master's in Sports Administration at Valparaiso in 2004. Candi Whitaker leaving MWSU for North Alabama, reuniting with Josh Looney

shooting Saturday evening in St. Joseph left a young man with a serious wound.

The
St. Joseph Police Department reports 29-year-old Blakley Whisenand is listed in
stable condition after suffering one gunshot wound. Police says the shooting
took place around 6:30 Saturday evening in the alley at 9th and Corby.

No
suspect has been taken into custody at this time. The investigation continues.

Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Mike Braun (R-IN) introduced new legislation designed to break down barriers to farming and agricultural land ownership.

The goal would be to help more Americans pursue farming careers. The bipartisan Farm Transition Act of 2024 would, for the first time, create a Commission on Farm Transitions to study the issues impacting the transition of agricultural operations to the next generation of farmers and ranchers and make recommendations to address those barriers.

“Farmland is one of our most valuable assets, contributing to local economies, safeguarding our national food security, and putting us on the map with world-class products,” Baldwin says. “Many people interested in a career in agriculture are getting locked out and having to compete with Wall Street investment firms buying up farmland.”

As of 2021, American Farmland Trust says seniors 65 and older owned more than 40 percent of the agricultural land in the U.S.

Bill would ease farmland ownership transitions

Agriculture touches the lives of everyone, and a regional museum wants to educate more people about the importance of agriculture.   

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame in Bonnor Springs, Kansas has been teaching people the importance of agriculture since 1960, when President Dwight Eisenhower signed a federal charter to make the building a reality 

President of the Board of Directors Dave Hurrelbrink says the goal of the center is a three-pronged approach: To promote, to honor, and to educate people about agriculture 

"Less than 1% of the US populations involved in the production of food, that means there's 99% of the population that probably doesn't have any idea at all of where their food comes from or how it gets there," Hurrelbrink tells host of the KFEQ Hotline Barry Birr.  

Hurrelbrink says they see a lot of kids come to the ag center and teach them about how that happens, and even how it was done in the past.  

More commonly known as The Ag Center, the museum has a goal of teaching everyone the importance of agriculture and where their food comes from.  

Hurrelbrink says one way the center will educate children is with the Barnyard Babies Family Festival in late April. 

"We'll have farm animals there that the kids can come out and pet and talk to and see and understand that that chicken doesn't just show up at Kentucky Fried, somebody has to raise that chicken, or that goat, or that sheep, or that pig," Hurrelbrink says. 

The event will be held on April 27th from 1oam to 4pm.  

The museum also features several educational programs, and also contains a Hall of Fame, honoring important figures in agriculture.  

Hurrelbrink says the people honored in the Hall of Fame runs the gamut. 

"It's everybody from George Washington Carver to John Deere, to Jerome Increase Case, to Cyrus McCormick, to Willie Nelson, Hurrelbrink explains. 

Hurrelbrink says Nelson was honored back in the 1980's due to his part in the Farm Aid movement.

National Agriculture Center aims to teach importance of agriculture

Missouri Governor Mike Parson held a few book signings during
his recent trip to St. Joseph.

“No Turnin’ Back” came out earlier this year.

Parson says it delves into his childhood in southern
Missouri’s Hickory County, the son of sharecroppers.

“A very difficult time for us as a familywise. You didn’t have
a lot of things. You didn’t have a lot of material things back then,” Parson
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “But everybody learned how to work hard, be good
neighbors, and respect one another. And I think that foundation has given me
the course set to be the governor of the state of Missouri. It talks abut my
Army career; talks about mistakes I’ve made in my life.”

Parson, a Republican, says he based his autobiography on the
themes of faith, family, freedom, and friendship.

Parson says he hopes the book inspires others.

“I think the biggest message I’d like people to get when they
get the book and see where I’ve come from is just to realize you don’t have to
be born with a silver spoon, you don’t have to have a large pedigree on the
wall to say who you are,” according to Parson. “You just have to work hard, you
have to treat people right, and you just have to do what’s best for other
people and I think that’s what my whole career’s been about.”

Parson says he tried to tell the good and the bad in the book,
adding his book isn’t just about him or First Lady Teresa Parson.

“We’re old enough in our careers that we’ve actually lived the
American dream. We really have. We’ve got to do so many things in our
lifetime,” Parson says. “We just want to make sure the next generations have
the same opportunity that we’ve had and that’s why we both go to work every day
doing what we do.”

Parson, a Republican, says it has been an honor to be
Missouri’s 57th governor. He cannot run for re-election, due to term limits.

While Parson grew up in Hickory County, he began his political
career as sheriff of Polk County, then winning election to the Missouri Senate.
He was elected Lt. Governor and became governor after Gov. Eric Greitens
resigned in 2018 after 17 tumultuous months in office. Parson won election to
the office in his own right in 2020. He cannot run for re-election.

Parson signed copies of his book at the downtown St. Joseph
Library as well as during a stop at Missouri Western State University.
