Mo. driver jailed after fatal pedestrian accident

BOONE COUNTY —One person died and another is in jail after an accident that occurred just after 5a.m. Sunday in Boone County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Ram 1500 driven by 20-year-old Jesus Ornelas-Rios of Columbia was westbound on Route AB one half mile east of U.S. 63. The pickup crossed the center of the road and struck a 2020 Toyota Camry that was parked partially in the eastbound lane in the ditch. The pickup then struck a pedestrian identified as a 23-year-old Columbia man who was standing next to the Camry.

The 23-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the University of Missouri Medical Examiner's office. Ornelas-Rios was later arrested on requested charges of DWI-death of another, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a motor vehicle in a carless and imprudent manner and on an immigration detainer, according to online jail records.
