Missouri election officials expected strong turnout for Tuesday's primary election, with Secretary of State Denny Hoskins projecting about 1.4 million voters statewide.
Now that the votes have been counted, Hoskins says turnout appears to have met or exceeded expectations.
“Turnout ultimately ended up at around 33% and we based that on our discussions with the local election authorities and county clerks who predicted anywhere from 20% turnout to 70% turnout in their particular district," Hoskins says. "So overall they were right on track.”
Election leaders across Missouri also reported heavy participation during the state's no-excuse absentee voting period leading up to Election Day.
Hoskins says a sizable number of Missourians requested nonpartisan ballots focused only on the statewide constitutional amendments.
“Some of our polling locations throughout the state did run out of those nonpartisan ballots and were immediately replaced by those local election authorities who brought in additional copies," Hoskins explains.
Hoskins classifies the election process across the state as successful.
“No significant issues were reported across the state. Just a few electioneering calls and complaints," Hoskins says. "Maybe somebody was electioneering too close to the door or things like that, but overall, it was a very successful election.”
