A Savannah Police Lieutenant has been charged in the death of Savannah K-9 officer Horus.
The Missouri Attorney General’s office filed the class A charge of misdemeanor animal abuse against Police Lt. Daniel Zeigler after an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
A probable cause statement filed by the patrol states Zeigler and his K-9 partner Horus had completed their overnight shift on June 20th when Horus was left in the Savannah Police K-9 vehicle and died of heat exposure. The patrol reports a safety feature designed to roll down windows and sound the horn when temperatures reach 90 degrees had been turned off.
The misdemeanor charge carries a punishment of up to one year in jail and a fine of $2,000.
