
RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged violent crimes in Manhattan.
Just before 8a.m. July 2, officers filed a report of aggravated assault in the 800 block of N. 4th Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley Police Department activity report.
A 51-year-old man reported a known 65-year-old male suspect brandished and approached the victim with a machete.
On July 4, police arrested 65-year-old Russell Royal Springer of Manhattan in the 400 block of Fort Riley Boulevard on requested charges that include aggravated assault. During the arrest, Springer was also charged with aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and possession of marijuana. A 34-year-old man was listed as the victim in that incident when it was reported Springer drove his vehicle into a patrol vehicle. Springer is being held on a total bond of $30,000, according to the RCPD.
Springer has previous convictions for arson and battery on law enforcement officers, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
