BOONE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Just after 3 p.m. Friday, Columbia Police responded to a suicidal subject call in the 300 block of Campusview Drive, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a man who said he was not suicidal. At approximately 3:57 p.m. officers returned to the area in response to the subject’s request for officer contact.

Upon arrival, officers located the subject who was in possession of a firearm. Officers attempted to get the man to surrender the weapon.

The man fired multiple rounds in the air and then fired multiple rounds at officers. In response, officers returned fire, resulting in the man's death.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police have not released his name.

“There are multiple people affected when events like this occur, and we have to find ways to support each other,” said Assistant Chief Lance Bolinger. “I would like to thank the residents who patiently waited for our officers on scene to address the situation, as well as the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Columbia Fire Department, University Hospital EMS and Emergency Department staff for assisting us.”

At this time, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is conducting a criminal investigation.

It is CPD’s practice to place officers who are directly involved in these incidents on administrative leave, pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.
