The St. Joseph Mustangs broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, defeating the Carroll Merchants 3-1 Sunday at Merchants Park in Carroll, Iowa.
With bases loaded and one out, Benton grad Carson Schmidt singled, scoring Lafayette grad Jayden Little along with Trevor McCollum.
McCollum was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the game. Schmidt was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Carson Schmdit’s brother, Tanner, got the save in the ninth, striking out one. The Mustangs are 26-4 on the season. They beat Jefferson City Saturday 5-0 after losing to Clarinda Friday, 11-3.
The Mustangs are off Monday and are at Clarinda Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
