(Radio Iowa) - More than 62-thousand Iowans are living with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, and if one of them is on your holiday gift list, some well-intentioned presents may no longer be appropriate or practical for them.
Lauren Livingston, spokeswoman for the Iowa chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, says some gifts can help a loved one in the early stages of the disease continue to navigate and maintain their independence. A label maker or a dry-erase calendar can help them stay organized, while a ride-sharing gift card can help them stay active and social.
Livingston suggests putting together a playlist of their favorite music to spark memories, or a family photo collage that includes names on the pictures. Digital clocks that show the day and date can also be helpful.
