A new Missouri House bill seeks to bring driver’s education back into public high schools.
A bill sponsored by Rep. Rodger Reedy aims to educate students on permit requirements, safe driving skills, distracted driving, traffic stops and driver safety risks. The bill would not require students to operate a vehicle though.
Executive Director at Saint Joseph Safety & Health Council, Frank Till, is in support of the idea, though he emphasized the importance of hands-on instruction in driving, which his organization offers.
"We're in it for the community, in whatever capacity we can be," Till said.
According to Till, 50% of permit test takers fail on their first attempt at the multiple choice test.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, car crashes are the number one cause of death for teens in Missouri. In 2023, 133 people were killed in teen driver-involved traffic crashes.
