Deputy struck by a car at scene of earlier crash continues to improve

Kansas City —A Jackson County sheriff's deputy struck by a car while investigating an accident continues to improve.

  Deputy Westphal sustained numerous serious injuries that required multiple surgeries. He was released from the hospital on Christmas Eve and on Tuesday returned to the  Jackson County Sheriff's office for a short visit, according to Jackson County Sheriff Daryl Forte'.

Just after 6p.m. December 17, a 2012 Mercedes driven by a 69-year-old Lee's Summit woman was southbound at South Buckner Tarsney at E. Ryan Road. The vehicle traveled into the crash scene and struck the the 53-year-old deputy, according to the MSHP.

Central Jackson County EMS transported the deputy to Centerpoint Medical Center where he underwnt several medical procedures.
