Free fishing statewide this weekend

The state Department of Conservation wants Missourians to get hooked on fishing this weekend.

Education Branch Chief Margie Vandeven says the state is offering free fishing tomorrow and Sunday at state conservation areas.

“This is the big, annual free fishing days for MDC, so anyone can go fishing without a fishing permit,” Vandeven says.

Other fishing regulations still apply, such as limits on size and number of fish that anglers are allowed to keep.

Vandeven says the department puts on this event each year.

“Another way to explore this activity,” Vandeven explains. “All the regulations apply, you know, the regular regulations. But it is an opportunity to give it a shot without needing to purchase a permit.”

Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas.  Many conservation areas that offer Free Fishing Days programs also have gear to use at no charge.
