KANSAS CITY (AP) — A Kansas man was convicted Wednesday of raping a woman while he was working as a nurse at a hospital in Missouri.

Chukwuemeka U. Emmanuel, 37, of Overland Park, was found guilty of first-degree rape after a bench trial. He will be sentenced Jan. 27, The Kansas City Star reported.

He was charged in June 2019 after a woman reported that Emmanuel raped her when she asked him for help to clean up because her catheter was leaking, according to court records.

The woman was being treated at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri, and was medicated with morphine and other narcotics to help manage pain, hospital officials said.

Emmanuel was working as a “float nurse” hired through an outside agency. He was fired after the allegations were made and fled the state before being apprehended.
