Kansas City will soon welcome over 650-thousand soccer fans for the World Cup tourney.
International World Cup soccer fans headed to Kansas City may not stay long. Makenzie Wolters of Visit K-C says that’s typical behavior for World Cup fans.
"They might only stay in Kansas City for two or three days, but then they might go to Dallas and watch their team play there," Wolters says
Kansas City convention and visitor’s bureau officials say World Cup hotel bookings have been lower than hoped. Wolters expects that to improve soon. She says they have seen a related, positive indicator.
"We are seeing really great Airbnb and short-term rental bookings. So probably a lot of people you're going to see staying at an Airbnb or a VRBO out by the stadium," Wolters explains
She says international fans typically stay in one host city for a few days, then travel to the next city to watch their team compete. The games begin June 16th and continue thru July 11th at Arrowhead Stadium.
Kansas City convention and visitor’s bureau officials are seeing more international World Cup “buzz.” Wolters says it’s going to be a mix of international and U-S fans.
"We're already seeing people who are posting online about coming into Kansas City from Ecuador, from Argentina. Those are two of our biggest markets of international visitors so far, which is really exciting to seem," Wolters says
The World Cup in Kansas City is June 16th thru July 11th. The official kickoff to the World Cup is June 11th.
