WASHINGTON– On Thursday, Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall released the following statement after the Senate passed his legislation to restore whole milk in schools. The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act expands healthy milk options in schools by reversing the Obama-era law that took whole milk out of school cafeterias.
“Whole milk is the most nutritious drink known to mankind, and for whatever reason, the federal government took it out of our schools over a decade ago – robbing an entire generation of essential dairy intake. As an obstetrician, I cannot stress the extensive list of benefits that comes from drinking whole – and most of all, it just tastes better,” said Senator Marshall. “I’m proud to see another win on the MAHA agenda cross the finish line in the Senate and am looking forward to seeing it signed into law.”
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) reports that nearly 90% of Americans do not meet their daily dairy intake recommendations. Specifically, Americans are lacking enough Calcium and Vitamin D, and whole milk is an excellent source of both vitamins. Leading nutritionists have found that whole dairy fats have no negative effect on a diet, and may even reduce the risk of heart disease.
The legislation was first introduced by Senator Marshall in June of 2023. It was reintroduced in April of 2025 with numerous bipartisan sponsors and co-sponsors and passed the Senate Agriculture Committee in June of 2025.
