Saturday is Drug Take Back Day, a day residents are urged to go to their medicine cabinets, grab their expired prescriptions, and safely dispose of them.

Buchanan County Sheriff, Bill Puett, says officials will again set up in the East Hills Mall parking lot to accept expired drugs.

“You can pull up and drop off your prescription bottles and all those things,” Puett tells KFEQmmunity. “They’ll take them and we’ll have DEA destroy all that stuff. They have a really polished process.”

Officials will set up in the East Hills Mall parking lot between 10am Saturday to 2pm.

Drug Take Back Day is held to destroy outdated drugs, especially pain killers, in an effort to curb the misuse of drugs and reduce opioid addiction. Officials will also accept old needles.

Puett says Drug Take Back Day hopes to remove drugs from the home, in an effort to keep them from ending up in the wrong hands.

“Get them out of the house. Get them out of access to hands that may not need them,” Puett says. “We take fentanyl patches. We take everything.”

Puett says for those who miss Drug Take Back Day, they can dispose of unused prescription drugs, including needles, at a special box installed in the Law Enforcement Center in downtown St. Joseph.
