Woman hospitalized after fire at a Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY—One person was injured in a  weekend house fire.

Just before 11p.m. Saturday, crews responded to a house fire located at 417 SW Polk Street in Topeka, according to a media release.

Crews encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the residence. Firefighters initiated fire attack operations and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

Fire crews rescued a woman from a first-floor apartment within the home. American Medical Response transported her to a local hospital in critical condition. A second occupant who resides in a second-floor apartment was able to escape prior to the arrival of firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Non-working smoke detectors were found in the home.
