SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest in Shawnee County.

Just after 12:30p.m.  July 4, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center received a report that a vehicle had driven into the Kansas River near the boat ramp in the 5600 of SW 6th Avenue, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The vehicle was occupied by an adult male and adult female. Both occupants were able to escape the submerged vehicle and were safely recovered from the river.

Later that afternoon, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office assumed the investigation after information was received indicating the male driver had intentionally driven the vehicle into the river in an attempt to harm the female passenger. Detectives responded to continue the investigation, while deputies documented the scene and coordinated with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks regarding recovery of the submerged vehicle. The vehicle will be removed once river conditions allow for a safe recovery.

As a result of the investigation, Jose M. Montes, 42, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the requested charges of Aggravated battery; DUI causing bodily harm, Aggravated assault; use of a deadly weapon and Driving under the influence

The 34-year-old female victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Christian.
