Kan. man accused of using explosives to set vans on fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fire and have made an arrest.

Just after 1:30a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to a vehicle fire  at 1106 SW 17th Street in Topeka, according to Fire Department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

Fire crews found three unoccupied passenger vans engulfed in flames. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack extinguishing the fires. No injuries were reported during the incident.

After a preliminary investigation the fire cause was intentionally set.

The total estimated loss was $49,000, all of which is associated with the loss of the vehicles.

As a result of the investigation police arrested 31-year-old Nicholas A. Darnell of Topeka on requested charges of Arson, Criminal use of explosives, Theft and Criminal damage to property.
