Kansas boy in custody after accidentally shooting himself

SALINE COUNTY —A Kansas boy is in custody after accidentally shooting himself in Salina.

Just after 3:30a.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to Salina Regional Health Center for the report of a 16-year-old who reportedly suffered a gunshot wound, according to Salina Police Captain Jim Feldman.

Investigators determined the the boy was in a vehicle with other individuals, and was carrying a handgun under his left arm. When the boy  reached for the handgun, a shot was fired and he received a superficial wound in his left armpit area. 

The driver of the vehicle transported the boy to Salina Regional Health Center.

Officers conducted a search warrant on the vehicle and confirmed the boy had shot himself. Police did not find the gun but did find marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  

The boy was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and then booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City on requested charges of Criminal Use of a Weapon, Criminal Carrying of a Weapon, Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm and Liquor Consumption.
