SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man is going to prison for a DUI crash that killed his 9-year-old son.

On Feb. 13, a judge sentenced 29-year-old Devin Saucedo to 24&nbsp;months in prison and ordered him to pay restitution of $9,679.86 to the Kansas Department of Transportation, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In March of 2022,&nbsp; police responded to report of a three-car&nbsp; injury accident on eastbound Kellogg at Seneca, according to officer Trevor Macy.

Investigators learned a 2007&nbsp; Ford Focus driven by Saucedo was eastbound on Kellogg and side swiped a 2017 Ford F-150, causing the truck to collide with a 2004 Dodge Ram.

Saucedo lost control of the car. It struck a bridge abutment and his 9-year-old son Armani&nbsp; Saucedo was ejected. The boy was pronounced dead at the the scene, according to Macy. EMS transported his father to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Saucedo previously pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence, according to the district attorney's office.

Kansas abortion providers would have to ask patients why they are terminating pregnancies under legislation critics argue represents an effort to “harass, intimidate and shame” abortion seekers.

A Kansas House committee heard Wednesday from anti-abortion groups — who argued collecting data on abortion patients would allow policymakers establish programs for those who are pregnant — and abortion-rights groups that questioned the motives behind the bill.

“If true choice is to truly exist, every woman should have the opportunity to examine all of her options,” said Mackenzie Haddix, spokeswoman for Kansans For Life, adding that “there’s real information that helps us gain a better understanding of why women are choosing abortion.”

The legislation, requested by Kansans for Life, would require providers have patients rank their top reasons for seeking an abortion, such as financial difficulty, a threat to their health posed by pregnancy, or the pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.

Providers would also have to collect demographic information, including age, race, marital status, state or country of residence, highest level of education, educational attainment, and whether the patient has reported domestic violence, has a safe place to live or received financial assistance from an organization that supports individuals during pregnancy. Even if a patient declined to answer why they sought the abortion, the provider would be required to record that and their demographic information.

The bill requires that the data be confidential and would apply even to minors.

“Kansans have made it abundantly clear that they do not want politicians in their exam rooms,” said Taylor Morton of Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes, referencing Kansas voters’ overwhelming rejection in August 2022 of an amendment that would have removed the right to an abortion from the Kansas Constitution.

All the legislation would do, she said, is undermine the relationship between patients and health care providers. She said there’s “no reason for the state to demand and collect this deeply personal information from patients.”

“Patients seeking literally any other form of necessary health care are not and would never be subjected to such intrusive and personal questioning,” she said, “nor are pregnant people subjected to such questioning when they decide to carry a pregnancy to term.”

The legislation was met with skepticism from several lawmakers on the House Committee on Health and Human Services, including Rep. Nikki McDonald, D-Olathe, who told a proponent of the legislation from the Alliance Defending Freedom that, based on the name of her organization, she would “think that you would be opposed to forcing women to disclose information that’s private.”

The proponent, Erica Steinmiller-Perdomo, said the legislation “is rationally related to promoting Kansas’ state interests in public health and welfare” and that the organization supports “policies that promote maternal health and safety.”

McDonald took issue with Steinmiller-Perdomo’s comments, arguing she implied that abortion is unsafe.

“Abortion is a routine, safe medical procedure, and when you keep bringing up maternal health, I think that’s a little disingenuous,” McDonald said.

Rep. Stephanie Clayton, D-Overland Park, questioned how patients’ privacy could be protected if they reported being a victim of domestic violence or rape in a publicly released report. If a child seeks an abortion following a rape, she asked, and there aren’t many such incidents reported each year, could someone connect the dots and identify them?

“If someone is the victim of that terrible crime as a child, they should be able to go on, week therapy and heal and live a full, adult life without having their privacy invaded because they were the victim of a crime,” Clayton said.

Haddix couldn’t answer the question and asked to follow up with Clayton.

Amber Sellers, director of advocacy for Trust Women Foundation, argued the legislation would be unnecessarily burdensome.

Sellers said the right to an abortion required no more justification than the right to free speech.

“These questions are confusing, and they’re stigmatizing,” Sellers said. “They lack relevance, and they’re medically unnecessary. They’re deeply invasive.”

The committee’s chair, Rep. Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita, argued collecting the information was important because a patient may seek an abortion “because she doesn’t know she has any other alternatives.”

Some patients “don’t think twice about that life,” Landwehr said. Others may be upset to learn later that there may have been another option.

Sellers said the lawmakers and advocates can’t speak to what brings someone in for an abortion “and we can’t make assumptions on what they do or don’t know.”

“I was one of those women,” Landwehr said, “and had I walked into that clinic and been given the information that there were alternatives, I would not have had my abortion. So I can speak to that.”

Landwehr said, if possible, she would ban abortion in any case except where the mother’s life is threatened or a pregnancy results from rape or incest.

Sellers countered that policymakers can’t speak to the motivations or knowledge of every abortion patient. She said care had changed considerably in the decades since Landwehr’s abortion. Providers now offer “holistic” and “comprehensive care.”

“We don’t know the thoughts of everyone,” Sellers said, “and we can’t make those assumptions for everyone.”

Kansas bill would require abortion seekers be asked for reasons before terminating pregnancy

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The maker of ChatGPT on Thursday unveiled its next leap into generative artificial intelligence with a tool that instantly makes short videos in response to written commands.

San Francisco-based OpenAI's new text-to-video generator, called Sora, isn't the first of its kind. Google, Meta and the startup Runway ML are among the other companies to have demonstrated similar technology.

But the high quality of videos displayed by OpenAI — some after CEO Sam Altman asked social media users to send in ideas for written prompts — astounded observers while also raising fears about the ethical and societal implications.

“A instructional cooking session for homemade gnocchi hosted by a grandmother social media influencer set in a rustic Tuscan country kitchen with cinematic lighting,” was a prompt suggested on X by a freelance photographer from New Hampshire. Altman responded a short time later with a realistic video that depicted what the prompt described.

The tool isn't yet publicly available and OpenAI has revealed limited information about how it was built. The company, which has been sued by some authors and The New York Times over its use of copyrighted works of writing to train ChatGPT, also hasn't disclosed what imagery and video sources were used to train Sora. (OpenAI pays an undisclosed fee to The Associated Press to license its text news archive).

OpenAI said in a blog post that it's engaging with artists, policymakers and others before releasing the new tool to the public.

“We are working with red teamers — domain experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content, and bias — who will be adversarially testing the model,” the company said. “We’re also building tools to help detect misleading content such as a detection classifier that can tell when a video was generated by Sora.”

OpenAI Sora: New tool makes instant videos from written prompts

The U.S. House voted Thursday to approve a bill that would preempt the Biden administration’s move last month to pause new approvals for some liquified natural gas exports.

Nine Democrats voted with every Republican in favor of the bill, which the chamber&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/202452?Page=2">approved 224-200.</a>&nbsp;The bill would remove the federal requirement that the Department of Energy considers an LNG export permit in the public interest before allowing a project to move forward.

Democrats voting for the bill were Yadira Caraveo of Colorado, Jim Costa of California, Henry Cuellar, Vicente Gonzalez and Marc Veasey of Texas, Jared Golden of Maine, Rick Larsen and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Mary Peltola of Alaska.

The bill does not appear likely to win the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate, even if some Democrats would support it.

The bill, sponsored by Texas Republican August Pfluger, targets a recent endeavor by President Joe Biden’s administration to pause new Energy Department permits for LNG exports to non-free-trade-agreement countries.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/biden-administration-temporarily-halt-some-export-approvals-liquified-natural-gas">The pause</a>&nbsp;has no specified end date and would be in place while the department reviews its criteria for its public-interest evaluations.

Like many of Biden’s energy policies, the move drew the ire&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/bidens-natural-gas-export-pause-fought-over-us-house-panel">of Republicans</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/manchin-blasts-white-house-siding-climate-activists-natural-gas-pause%C2%A0">some energy-state Democrats</a>&nbsp;who said it would reduce domestic natural gas production.

Advocates for the measure say LNG releases fewer climate-changing emissions than coal and other fossil fuels, and U.S. production and exportation of the fuel closes more of the European market to Russian-sourced LNG.

“President Biden has issued executive orders and given direction to the federal agencies across the government to shut down American energy production, even at the expense of jobs, economic development, national security and the climate,” South Carolina Republican Jeff Duncan said Thursday.

Releasing more American supply would hamper Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to raise money for that country’s invasion of Ukraine, Duncan said. Russia is a large exporter of natural gas.

“Putin and his energy oligarchs are exporting to Europe 40% more than they did before the war in Ukraine,” Duncan said. “That’s 40% more money flowing right into the pocket of Vladimir Putin to fund his war with Ukraine. I would rather that money flow into the pockets of American energy producers and tax bases and communities all around this country.”

Duncan, the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy, Climate and the Grid, and other Republicans said Thursday the pause was an election-year ploy to gain favor with environmental groups and was not a well-informed policy goal.

The bill would reverse the pause by revoking the Energy Department’s authority to review export applications.

Instead, approvals for new exports would be overseen only by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Under the bill, that commission would be required to deem all LNG exports in the public interest.

Democrats lined up on the floor Thursday to oppose the bill, which they said would remove a critical environmental guardrail.

“Ensuring that LNG exports are in America’s best interest is something we should all want,” Energy and Commerce ranking Democrat Frank Pallone of New Jersey said. “Instead, we’re here considering a bill that does the opposite.”

The bill “goes so much further” than simply reversing the administration’s pause by requiring that FERC find any proposed LNG export in the public interest, the subcommittee’s ranking Democrat, Colorado’s Diana DeGette, said.

“It says all LNG exports must be in the public interest,” DeGette said. “And it prohibits the Department of Energy from finding otherwise.”

If increased exports lead to higher rates for U.S. consumers or “exorbitant” release of pollution, the department would be powerless to stop expansion, she said.

The pause does not impact current LNG exports, which are ample, DeGette added. The U.S. is the world’s leading producer of LNG. Exports have tripled since 2019.

The Biden administration opposes the bill, the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/SAP-HR7176.pdf">Tuesday statement</a>.

The bill would undermine the administration’s ability to ensure exports are aligned with economic, energy security, geopolitical and environmental goals, the statement said.

“The Administration believes that the critical protections current law provides, which this legislation would repeal, should be retained to protect residential and industrial consumers and national and domestic energy security,” the statement said.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating another deadly shooting in Wichita and have made two arrests.

Just after 4p.m. Thursday, police responded to a shooting in the 1400 block of South George Washington Blvd. in&nbsp; Wichita, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses.

 The victim, identified as 42-year-old Candace Amack of Wichita, was found outside of a residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was&nbsp; was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Employing FLOCK, cutting-edge technology, Wichita Police Officers were able to identify a possible suspect vehicle leaving the area after the reported shooting.

Officers quickly identified and located the vehicle at a residence in the 1300 block of North Jackson in Wichita. In collaboration with the Kansas Highway Patrol air section, the Wichita Police Department coordinated efforts resulting in the safe apprehension of the suspects at approximately 7:45 pm near 13th and Hydraulic on a vehicle stop.

 Two individuals identified from the daily booking report as 24-year-old&nbsp;Jose Velazquez-Carillo&nbsp; and 33-year-old Martin Velazquez-Villa were detained without incident and later arrested on requested charges of First-Degree Murder.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Acura TL driven by a 16-year-old boy from Brumley was eastbound on River Road just before Osage River Bridge Road.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)— Missile fire apparently targeted a ship Friday off&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/yemen">Yemen</a>&nbsp;in the Red Sea, the latest attack suspected to have been carried out by Yemen’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/houthis">Houthi rebels</a>&nbsp;amid Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The vessel’s captain reported an explosion nearby the ship in the Red Sea off the Yemeni city of Mocha, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization center said.

“The crew and the vessel are reported safe,” the UKMTO said.

It did not immediately identify the vessel targeted.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels did not immediately acknowledge carrying out the attack. However, the rebels typically take several hours before claiming their assaults.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war">Israel’s offensive in Gaza</a>. They have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for trade among Asia, the Mideast and Europe.

The U.S. and British militaries have conducted multiple rounds of airstrikes targeting the Houthis’ missile arsenals and launch sites in territory they hold.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military’s Central Command acknowledged carrying out new airstrikes targeting the Houthis on Thursday. It described hitting three mobile anti-ship cruise missiles in Houthi-controlled territory that “were prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea.”

U.S. conducts new airstrikes targeting Iran-backed rebels

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

On Valentine's Day, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on an Infiniti FX 35 SUV on Q Road north of 150th Road, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The traffic stop led to the search of the vehicle.  The deputy located items believed to be drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. The driver, Anna Lee Potts, 57, of Mayetta, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and no insurance.

Kansas woman caught with meth on Valentine's Day

KANSAS CITY (AP) —NBA champion and “Survivor” contestant Scot Pollard has had a heart transplant, his wife said on social media on Friday night.

“Scot has a new heart!” Dawn Pollard posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Surgery went well and I’ve been told the heart is big, powerful and is a perfect fit! Now on to the crucial part of recovery. Thank you to everyone for the continued prayers and support, but most of all, deepest thanks to the donor, our hero.”

Pollard, who turned 49 on Monday, needed a transplant because of damage to his heart from a virus he caught in 2021 that likely triggered a genetic condition he has known about since it killed his father at 54, when Scot was 16.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scot-pollard-nba-survivor-heart-transplant-d8b34f86b1a6f027ef8210c3a6ab0268">Pollard’s size complicated efforts to find a donor</a>&nbsp;with a heart big enough to fit his 6-foot-11, 260-pound body.

Earlier Friday, Dawn Pollard posted that a heart had been found.

“It’s go time!” she&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/DawnMPollard/status/1758557622729408744">posted on X</a>. “Please keep the prayers coming for Scot, the surgeons, for the donor and his family who lost their loved one. This donor gave the most amazing gift of life and we are forever grateful.”

A 1997 first-round draft pick after helping Kansas reach the NCAA Sweet 16 in four straight seasons, Pollard was a useful big man off the bench for much of an NBA career that stretched over 11 years and five teams. He played 55 seconds in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ trip to the NBA Finals in 2007, and won it all the following year with the Celtics despite a season-ending ankle injury in February.

Pollard retired after that season, then dabbled in broadcasting and acting. He was a contestant on the 32nd season of “Survivor,” where he was voted out on Day 27 with eight castaways remaining.

Pollard went public with his condition last month began the process of listing himself at transplant centers. He was admitted to intensive care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Feb. 7.

“I’m staying here until I get a heart,” he said in a text message to The Associated Press from his Nashville, Tennessee, hospital room. “My heart got weaker. (Doctors) agree this is my best shot at getting a heart quicker.”

Former KU star, 'Survivor' contestant Scot Pollard receives heart transplant

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge ruled Friday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fraud-trial-letitia-james-biden-97077792773f1f25864a462de861a467">against Donald Trump</a>, imposing a $364 million penalty over what the judge ruled was a yearslong scheme to dupe banks and others with financial statements that inflated the former president’s wealth.

Trump also was barred from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation for three years.

Judge Arthur Engoron issued his decision after a 2½-month trial that saw the Republican presidential front-runner bristling under oath that he was the victim of a rigged legal system.

The stiff penalty was a victory for New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, who sued Trump over what she said was not just harmless bragging but years of deceptive practices as he built the multinational collection of skyscrapers, golf courses and other properties that catapulted him to wealth, fame and the White House.

Trump’s lawyers had said even before the verdict that they would appeal.

James sued Trump in 2022 under a state law that authorizes her to investigate persistent fraud in business dealings.

The suit accused Trump and his co-defendants of routinely puffing up his financial statements to create an illusion his properties were more valuable than they really were. State lawyers said Trump exaggerated his wealth by as much as $3.6 billion one year.

By making himself seem richer, Trump qualified for better loan terms, saved on interest and was able to complete projects he might otherwise not have finished, state lawyers said.

Even before the trial began, Engoron ruled that James had proven Trump’s financial statements were fraudulent. The judge ordered some of Trump’s companies removed from his control and dissolved. An appeals court put that decision on hold.

In that earlier ruling, the judge found that, among other tricks, Trump’s financial statements had wrongly claimed his Trump Tower penthouse was nearly three times its actual size and overvalued his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, based on the idea that the property could be developed for residential use, even though he had surrendered rights to develop it for any uses but a club.

Trump, one of 40 witnesses to testify at the trial, said his financial statements actually understated his net worth and that banks did their own research and were happy with his business.

“There was no victim. There was no anything,” Trump testified in November.

During the trial, Trump called the judge “extremely hostile” and the attorney general “a political hack.” In&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-fraud-lawsuit-new-york-closing-arguments-b36abe2fd695d0172e71f8ef9c5ee7f3">a six-minute diatribe</a>&nbsp;during closing arguments in January, Trump proclaimed “I am an innocent man” and called the case a “fraud on me.”

Trump and his lawyers have said the outside accountants that helped prepare the statements should’ve flagged any discrepancies and that the documents came with disclaimers that shielded him from liability. They also argued that some of the allegations were barred by the statute of limitations.

The suit is one of many legal headaches for Trump as he campaigns for a return to the White House. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-investigations-other-charges-b8b064a00caad4306fb54d2f6a320468">has been indicted four times</a>&nbsp;in the last year — accused in Georgia and Washington, D.C., of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden, in Florida of hoarding classified documents, and in Manhattan of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels on his behalf.

On Thursday, a judge confirmed Trump’s hush-money trial will start on March 25 and a judge in Atlanta heard arguments on whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from his Georgia&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/georgia-indictment-arraignment-trump-giuliani-c5abbd260f44947a1c01211136108bfe">election interference case</a>&nbsp;because she had a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fani-willis-nathan-wade-trump-indictment-493165c4614761d4b965923696134c09">personal relationship</a>&nbsp;with a special prosecutor she hired.

Those criminal accusations haven’t appeared to undermine his march toward the Republican presidential nomination, but civil litigation has threatened him financially.

On Jan. 26, a jury ordered Trump to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-carroll-defamation-trial-e4ea8b93cdeb29857864ffd8d14be888">pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll</a>&nbsp;for defaming her after she accused him in 2019 of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s. That’s on top of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rape-carroll-trial-fe68259a4b98bb3947d42af9ec83d7db">$5 million a jury awarded Carroll</a>&nbsp;in a related trial last year.

In 2022, the Trump Organization was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-new-york-manhattan-donald-trump-government-and-politics-86177401a887c85ab50d8b78eb1ed397">convicted of tax fraud</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-legal-proceedings-new-york-city-donald-trump-manhattan-e2f1d01525dafb64be8738c8b4f32085">fined $1.6 million</a>&nbsp;in an unrelated criminal case for helping executives dodge taxes on extravagant perks such as Manhattan apartments and luxury cars.

James had asked the judge to impose a penalty of at least $370 million.

Engoron decided the case because neither side sought a jury and state law doesn’t allow for juries for this type of lawsuit.

Because it was civil, not criminal in nature, the case did not carry the potential of prison time.

James, who campaigned for office as a Trump critic and watchdog, started scrutinizing his business practices in March 2019 after his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/88e83c32a9d54d82abe3ac52bfad22e4">testified to Congress</a>&nbsp;that Trump exaggerated his wealth on financial statements provided to Deutsche Bank while trying to obtain financing to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

James’ office previously sued Trump for misusing his own charitable foundation to further his political and business interests. Trump was ordered to pay $2 million to an array of charities as a fine and the charity, the Trump Foundation, was shut down.

Trump incorporated the Trump Organization in New York in 1981. He still owns it, but he put his assets into a revocable trust and gave up his positions as the company’s director, president and chairman when he became president, leaving management of the company to sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr.

Trump did not return to a stated leadership position upon leaving the White House in 2021, but his sons testified he’s been involved in some decision making.

Engoron had already appointed a monitor, retired federal judge Barbara Jones, to keep an eye on the company.

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man has been charged in the fatal shooting early Feb. 12, 2024, in the area of 50th and Bellefontaine Avenue in Kansas City, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Charlie L Bowman, 56, faces Murder in the 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

According to court records, officers for the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the area and found a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. She was pronounced deceased soon after responders arrived on scene.

 Officers contacted Bowman who had remained on the scene. Video footage showed a vehicle arrive at the scene with another vehicle pulling in behind it. The victim is observed getting out of the &nbsp;second vehicle and walking to the driver's door of the first vehicle, a Buick. A &nbsp;witness stated the victim had gone up to the car where the defendant was sitting and shot her twice. She tried to flee and collapsed on the sidewalk.&nbsp;

Law enforcement authorities investigating a deadly Monday shooting in Kansas City have identified the victim as 57-year-old Ruth A. Bowman.

Just after 12:30.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a shooting at 50th and Bellefontaine, according to Police Captain Jake Becchina.

First responders were directed to a shooting victim, later identified as Bown, unresponsive on the sidewalk north of the intersection. Officers began rendering aid and summoned EMS to the scene who declared her deceased.

Responding Officers detained two people who were at the scene when they arrived for further investigation. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene for evidence and canvassed for witnesses.&nbsp; Police have not reported an arrest or additional details.

Suspect charged after Kansas City woman found dead on sidewalk

SHAWNEE COUNTY — A firefighter was injured at a house fire Thursday evening.

Just after&nbsp; 5 p.m. crews responded to a fully involved two-story house fire at&nbsp;4849 SW 17th Street in Topeka, according to Fire Department spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

After getting the fire under control, the first arriving crew exited the home to trade out air pack bottles before continuing their work. During this time, a Topeka firefighter experienced a medical emergency.

American Medical Response transported the firefighter&nbsp;to a Stormont Vail. The firefighter remains hospitalized and continues to receive care and was being monitored by hospital staff Friday afternoon, according to Fire Department Chief Alan Stahl in a media release.

Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the fire.&nbsp; The total dollar loss from the fire is $65,000.

EMS transported one firefighter&nbsp;to a local hospital.&nbsp; Authorities have not reported additional details on the cause of the fire. The firefighter was listed in stable condition late Thursday, according to Nichols.&nbsp; Check the post for additional details as they become available.

Firefighter injured battling Kan. house fire remains hospitalized

OSAGE COUNTY, Mo. —The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control announces the recovery of human remains, identified as Derek C. Holtmeyer, 35, of Linn, Missouri, according to a media release from the patrol.

Holtmeyer’s body was located on February 8, 2024, by investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop F/I Criminal Unit. On July 12, 2023, the family of Derek C. Holtmeyer contacted the Osage County Sheriff’s Office to report they had not had contact with him since the early morning hours of July 11, 2023. 

After taking a missing person’s report and conducting an exhaustive investigation into Holtmeyer’s disappearance, on October 13, 2023, Osage County Sheriff Michael Bonham formally requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol take over the investigation.

 At that time, the investigation into Holtmeyer’s disappearance was assigned to the Troop F/I Criminal Unit of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.On February 8, 2024, while conducting a ground search as part of their missing person investigation, patrol investigators located human remains in a wooded area near Chamois, Missouri, in Osage County. 

On February 15, 2024, the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the remains as Derek C. Holtmeyer, of Linn, Missouri. 

The investigation into Holtmeyer’s death and disappearance is on-going. The Osage County Sheriff’s Office and the Osage County Coroner are assisting with the investigation.

Twenty-two others, half of whom were under 16, were wounded in the shooting. KANSAS CITY —A jury last week convicted a Kansas City man of four counts of Aggravated Rape in the 1st Degree for assaults of a girl under the age of 12, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Brandon Williams, 23, will be sentenced on April 4, but the four convictions each require sentences of Life without Parole for a period of at least 30 years or a total of 120 years.

According to court records, the victim reported being raped by the defendant repeatedly and consistently for a period of two years.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys Dani Sediqzad and Andrea Herron prosecuted the case on behalf of the state of Missouri.

Employees — who worked at “stores” not bank branches — were forced to open millions of unauthorized accounts. Customers had their identities stolen and their credit scores impacted. Of the millions of customers effected, a disproportionate number were non-English speaking Americans.The scandal severely tarnished the reputation of San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, which eight years ago was considered one of the best-run banks in the country by investors and analysts.Since the scandal broke, Wells Fargo overhauled its board of directors and management, paid more than a billion dollars in fines and penalties, and has spent eight years trying to show the public that the bad practices are a thing of the past. The scandal led to unionization efforts at some branches as employees protested how managers pushed unreasonable sales goals.In a brief statement Thursday, the Comptroller of the Currency said that Wells Fargo's “safety and soundness” and “compliance with laws and regulations does not require the continued existence of the Order."The decision is a major victory for Wells Fargo's management and Charles Scharf, who took over as CEO in 2019.“Confirmation from the OCC that we have effectively implemented what was required is a result of the hard work of so many of our employees, and I’d like to thank everyone at Wells Fargo involved for their dedication to transforming how we do business,” Scharf said in a prepared statement.Citigroup banking analyst Keith Horwitz said in a note that the OCC's decision was “positive proof” that Wells Fargo's management was making the right decisions to fix the company's culture.There remains in place a Federal Reserve consent order against Wells Fargo as well as a requirement by the Fed that bank grow no bigger than its current size until it fixes its sales culture. The Fed declined to comment, but the OCC's decision is likely to pressure the Fed to make its own decision regarding its restrictions on Wells Fargo.Including the Fed's order, Wells Fargo still has eight consent orders that govern its operations. That's down from 14 when Scharf took over the bank. Management says they still have work to do.“We’ve changed the company across a number of dimensions," said Scott Powell, Well Fargo's chief operating officer, in an interview. Powell joined the bank roughly around the same time as Scharf.
