KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes led two similar touchdown drives and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Washington Commanders 24-14 in a preseason game. 

The first one was a 12-play, 87-yard drive in 5:28, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jody Fortson. The second was a 12-play, 82-yard drive that took 5:25 and was capped by a 7-yard touchdown to, yet again, Fortson. 

Mahomes finished 12 of 19 for 162 yards. Justin Watson continued to make his case for a spot on the final 53 man roster, hauling in two big passes from Mahomes for 53 yards.&nbsp; To go with his two touchdown catches, Fortson also hauled in two more passes to go four catches for 19 yards

After missing the final two training camp practices in St. Joseph wide receivers JuJu Smith Schuster and Mecole Hardman, defensive tackle Chris Jones, and tight end Blake Bell were inactive for the game.&nbsp; The Chiefs also saw cornerback Rashad Fenton leave the game with a groin injury.

The Chiefs have one final preseason game on Thursday when they host the Green Bay Packers.&nbsp; Pregame will be at 6:oo pm and kickoff at 7:00pm on 680/95.3 KFEQ and Q-Country 92.7.

Massey sac fly in 10th gives Royals 3-2 win over Rays

It appeared, at first, that St. Joseph Central had won the jamboree.

On Benton's final varsity snap on offense in the third quarter, Central senior Nathan Mense buried Benton quarterback Jaxson Rich for a sack, and it appeared to be over.

Then, before the game was actually, officially over, much of Central's sideline rushed the field in celebration after Mense's sack. This prompted a dead ball, unsportsmanlike penalty.

This gave the Benton varsity offense one more snap - a first and goal at the 10-yard line. Rich rolled right, found senior Devon Hoffman on the inner edge of the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown, lifting the Cardinals to a 21-18 victory over the Indians.

Benton, who beat Lafayette in the first period 18-0, won the city jamboree Friday for the first time since 2015.

"It was a crazy finish," Benton coach Kevin Keeton said on the Cliff Notes Podcast afterward. "That had to be exciting for the fans."

The Cardinals started the event with a bang, as senior Bishop Rush cracked the end zone on a five-yard run, which was followed by a 30-yard touchdown pass to senior Denver Domann.

Junior Andrew Daughtery had an 11-yard touchdown rush later in the quarter, giving the Cardinals an 18-0 lead. The Benton defense then held Lafayette to just 11 total yards and didn't allow the Irish a single first down.

Central's offense put on a show in the second quarter. The Indians kept the ball on the ground for the most part, as sophomore Gabe Fields scored rushing touchdowns from one, 25 and 12 yards out.

Senior quarterback Stone Wetlaufer also found senior Asher Katakis for a 12-yard score, leading the Indians to a 24-3 win over Lafayette. Just like Benton, Central's defense held the Irish out of the end zone.

This set up a winner take-all third quarter between Benton and Central, who will meet in the regular season in the South Side on September 2.

The Indians got the ball first and went to work, as Fields scored his fourth touchdown of the night from three yards out to put Central ahead 6-0. On the very next play, Wetlaufer took off on a 25-yard touchdown run.

After that, Fields scored for a fifth time - this one from 13 yards out. The Indians went up 18-0 in just a handful of snaps.

Then suddenly, the tides started to turn Benton's way. Domann had a strip sack on Wetlaufer, which ended in a fumble recovery for Brodie Hendrix. A fumble recovery or interception resulted in three points for the team that forced the turnover.

On Central's final varsity snaps on offense, Domann would force another fumble from Wetlaufer on a quarterback run. That fumble was recovered by Brett Henderson. Then, Devon Hoffman intercepted Wetlaufer on a short route, further closing the gap.

When Benton took over on offense, they were down 18-9. The Cardinals needed two touchdowns to take the lead and had 12 snaps to do so.

Central forced Benton into a turnover on downs on the Cardinals' first four offensive snaps, but a pass interference penalty against the Indians in the end zone set Benton up with a first and goal at the five.

Rush scored from five yards out to make it 18-15 Central with just a few snaps left for the Cardinals. Mense's sack on Rich would have ended it, but Benton was rewarded the extra, game winning play due to the dead ball penalty on Central.

"I'm just happy our kids got to experience this success on this big of stage," Keeton said. "They've earned the right to feel good about themselves. I feel good about us.&nbsp;

Rich was 8-of-13 through the air Friday for 80 yards passing and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 11 yards and a score.

Central's Gabe Field was very productive, finishing with 112 yards on 10 carries and five touchdowns. Wetlaufer had 54 all-purpose yards and two all-purpose scores.

Benton travels to Northeast Kansas City to officially open the season next week. Central is home to Ruskin, and Lafayette is home to Center.

Benton and Lafayette will see each other in the North Side on September 9.

Benton shuts out Lafayette, walks off against Central to win jamboree

A new holiday tradition debuts on the hardwood this December as the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Hoops Classic will take place December 21 &amp; 22 at Civic Arena.

The event is hosted and operated by the St. Joseph Sports Commission. The field features all five city schools along with other area teams competing in a boys/girls classic style format right before Christmas.

 Twelve total games will take place, as day one features East Buchanan vs. Northland Christian, North Platte vs. East Atchison and concluding with an all-city match-up featuring Central vs. Lafayette.

St. Joseph Christian tips off day two, taking on Stewartsville-Osborn, followed by a Class 2 top five girls match-up with LeBlond facing Schuyler County, and then a match-up of 20-win boys teams when LeBlond matches up with West Platte. The nightcap on day two will feature Benton against Lincoln Prep.

Ticket information will be released in late fall.

St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Holiday Hoops Classic coming this December

SAVANNNAH -&nbsp;The Savannah volleyball team is under new leadership this season, as Taylor Grubb takes over as head coach.

Grubb, a former college volleyball player at MidAmerica Nazarene University, was a volunteer assistant last year when the Savages went 22-11-2 and were district runners-up to Smithville.

Savannah returns six players with starting varsity experience, while also having six seniors on roster.

Grubb says this group of returning talent has made her job easier in the early days of practice.

"I mean, that helps with me being a first-time head coach," Grubb said. "Having so many returning players. Really great, talented players. So, I think it's going to be a really good team this&nbsp; year."

One leader back from last year is senior and outside hitter Sailor Bodenhausen. She had 97 kills to go with 13 blocks and 51 digs.

Bodenhausen says this senior class is determined to improve off of last year and make a deep postseason run.

"We all worked extremely hard in the summer," Bodenhausen said. "We put countless hours in during the summer and right now. Yeah, so I think we're really trying to after it this year."

Savannah was likely at its best toward the end of last season, winning seven of its last nine matches and reaching the district title match.

Junior outside hitter Rhyan Shrick, a returning starter who had 166 kills last season, says the hard work has continued ever since last season ended.

"We put in a lot of hours in the weight room as well," she said. "I think most of us take a weights class. We all work hard in the summer and the school year and we're all very close and have very good bonds. So, that always helps us."

Savannah has won 20 or more matches in two of the last three seasons and they seek their first district title since 2015.

Savannah opens the season at St. Joseph Christian on September 1.

"I'm excited now to get into the season and take these next two weeks for our girls to get ready for our first game," Grubb said.

Sophomore Trinity Fansher is expected to play a key role as a middle blocker after filling in for injured players last year. Another sophomore, Sara Younkin, is another that's impressed so far in practice.

"We're really just trying to finish strong this year," Bodenhausen said. "I know all of the seniors want to go out district champs."

Post Preview: Savannah volleyball seeks continued success under new head coach

With the season in the rearview mirror and a third straight MINK League championship in its belt, the accolades continue to roll in for the St. Joseph Mustangs organization. 

In a season where the organization saw an average of 2,400 fans per game, the Mustangs are ranked in the top 12 in summer collegiate baseball national attendance rankings by BallparkDigest.com.

The 2,400 fan average placed the Mustangs at number 11 on the chart among collegiate summer baseball teams all across the country.

This is the ninth consecutive year the Mustangs have placed in the top 12.  After averaging just over 2,200 guests in 2021 per game, the team saw a 7% increase in 2022.

St. Joseph Mustangs rank nationally in attendance

The Kansas City Chiefs officially concluded training camp for 2022 in St. Joseph Thursday with a fairly short, half-padded practice.

The Chiefs held a 10-10-10 practice - 10 plays for the first-team offense, 10 for the first-team defense and then 10 minutes of special teams plays. They cycled through that order three times on a clear, cool morning with temperatures in the low 70s Thursday.

This marks the end of the 12th training camp held at Missouri Western State University. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, just like every other year, was sure to thank the University for all of their hard work getting ready for camp and then hosting the team for three weeks.

"We appreciate everything Missouri Western State University does for us," Reid said. "They roll out the red carpet. It's a great situation here."

In terms of on-the-field work, Reid felt that the 17 practices were overall productive and created strong competition across the board.

"They challenged each other and that's all you can ask for as a coach," he said. "I thought it was great for the young guys to see that and feel that. That you have to come out here every day in the right mindset."

Patrick Mahomes says a number of players jumped out to him over the last three or so weeks in camp.

"Chris Jones," he said right off the bat. "I mean, he was dominant. He's the first one I think of. I think the biggest thing with Chris this year was with the run and the pass. He was down there, dominating stuff, making tackles on the run game."

Certainly on the offensive end, everyone was curious to see how Mahomes would work with the plethora of new receivers, namely Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore. Justin Watson was also in the mix, while the tight ends also had a productive camp.

"Those receivers, in training camp and OTAs, there's a lot of routes run," Mahomes pointed out. "We practice fast. We keep things rolling, and they kind of have to be in and out. As you got to this middle part of camp, you could see it. They had their legs under them. They were running these routes."

Running back Jerick McKinnon returned to the field Thursday after missing Wednesday's workout with a hamstring injury. Chris Jones (back spasm), Mecole Hardman (groin spasm) and Juju Smith-Schuster (knee) did not practice, nor did Blake Bell (hip) or Lucas Niang (knee).

Niang spent the entirety of camp on the physically unable to perform list, as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.

Reid said Jones and Hardman are both "improving." He said also that Smith-Schuster is "making progress." It's not yet known if Jones or Hardman will play Saturday against Washington. Reid noted it's unlikely that Smith-Schuster will see action.

As for who will play in the game, Reid said the starters will play for most of the first half, with the third and fourth-string offense playing the entirety of the second.

Just like in last year's third preseason game against Minnesota, Chad Henne and the second-team offense will sit out to allow the younger players to get more reps.

Mahomes was very effective in the one drive he had last Saturday at Chicago, completing 6-of-7 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown to Blake Bell.

His goal for this Saturday's game remains the same.

"You want to move the ball down the field," Mahomes said. "Kind of move through the procedure of everything and hopefully you get at least one touchdown in there. I mean, our goal is to score every time we're on the field. You want to be in and out of the huddle the right way, moving the ball and executing the offense."

Saturday's game kicks off at 3 p.m. central.

This was the last required year that the Chiefs had to be at Missouri Western for training camp, per the current agreement, with two optional years left.

Missouri Western president Elizabeth Kennedy told KFEQ Radio's The Hotline during camp that the university will officially begin negotiations with the Chiefs about exercising those two optional years in March.

"It really is just a really great atmosphere," Kennedy said. "We're happy to host it and I'm really happy to work with all of our different partners in our community who are so excited."

Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus has been to every training camp the last 29 years, including all of 12 of them in St. Joseph. He doesn't believe it's a coincidence that the Chiefs started becoming consistent postseason contenders shortly after moving camp to Missouri Western in 2010.

"We've had 11 camps in St. Joe and have been to the playoffs in eight of those 11 years," Holthus said. "I don't think it's a coincidence that the most successful nine years in Chiefs history, a lot of it is Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, but this is where those seasons begin - right here on this campus and right here in this city."

They cycled through that order three times on a clear, cool morning with temperatures in the low 70s Thursday.This marks the end of the 12th training camp held at Missouri Western State University. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, just like every other year, was sure to thank the University for all of their hard work getting ready for camp and then hosting the team for three weeks."We appreciate everything Missouri Western State University does for us," Reid said. "They roll out the red carpet. It's a great situation here."In terms of on-the-field work, Reid felt that the 17 practices were overall productive and created strong competition across the board."They challenged each other and that's all you can ask for as a coach," he said. "I thought it was great for the young guys to see that and feel that. That you have to come out here every day in the right mindset."Patrick Mahomes says a number of players jumped out to him over the last three or so weeks in camp."Chris Jones," he said right off the bat. "I mean, he was dominant. He's the first one I think of. I think the biggest thing with Chris this year was with the run and the pass. He was down there, dominating stuff, making tackles on the run game."Certainly on the offensive end, everyone was curious to see how Mahomes would work with the plethora of new receivers, namely Juju Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore. Justin Watson was also in the mix, while the tight ends also had a productive camp."Those receivers, in training camp and OTAs, there's a lot of routes run," Mahomes pointed out. "We practice fast. We keep things rolling, and they kind of have to be in and out. As you got to this middle part of camp, you could see it. They had their legs under them. They were running these routes."Injury updateRunning back Jerick McKinnon returned to the field Thursday after missing Wednesday's workout with a hamstring injury. Chris Jones (back spasm), Mecole Hardman (groin spasm) and Juju Smith-Schuster (knee) did not practice, nor did Blake Bell (hip) or Lucas Niang (knee).Niang spent the entirety of camp on the physically unable to perform list, as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.Reid said Jones and Hardman are both "improving." He said also that Smith-Schuster is "making progress." It's not yet known if Jones or Hardman will play Saturday against Washington. Reid noted it's unlikely that Smith-Schuster will see action.As for who will play in the game, Reid said the starters will play for most of the first half, with the third and fourth-string offense playing the entirety of the second.Just like in last year's third preseason game against Minnesota, Chad Henne and the second-team offense will sit out to allow the younger players to get more reps.Mahomes was very effective in the one drive he had last Saturday at Chicago, completing 6-of-7 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown to Blake Bell.His goal for this Saturday's game remains the same."You want to move the ball down the field," Mahomes said. Mahle exits early; Twins beat Royals 4-0 for 3-game sweep

It seemed like an ordinary day at Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph Wednesday with sunny, clear skies and the team practicing in full pads.

However, the Chiefs ended the day with a longer injury list.

Tight end Blake Bell is still out with a hip injury he sustained in Saturday's game, and receiver Juju Smith-Schuster missed a second straight day with a sore knee.

Early in practice Wednesday, defensive tackle Chris Jones left practice due to back soreness. Running back Jerick McKinnon missed all of Wednesday due to a hamstring injury and receiver Mecole Hardman hurt his groin after landing awkwardly going after a ball about halfway through practice.

Hardman walked off under his own power and eventually left the field, riding in the front seat of a cart.

No long-term diagnosis on any of these yet, though more should be known following Thursday's practice, which will be the last one of training camp.

Long snapper James Winchester was gone Wednesday due to personal reasons. Punter Tommy Townsend returned after two days away due to personal matters. Right tackle Lucas Niang (knee) is still on the physically unable to perform list.

Wednesday marked the 16th full practice at Chiefs training camp with the 17th and final coming up Thursday. The latter half of camp is often called “the dog days.” The excitement wears off, guys start to feel sore, the days get long and the public focus shifts to preseason and regular season games.

Still, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has seen the kind of growth that he wants to see right now from his unit.

"Certain words are starting to mean something to them," he said. "They're starting to understand the techniques and fundamentals that we're teaching. It's been fun to watch. Has it been perfect? No, it hasn't been perfect, but that's the beauty of training camp. These guys are working hard and are accepting coaching."

One of those players who's continued to grow is rookie running back Isiah Pacheco. He's continued to pop throughout camp, as he snagged a nice wheel route for extra yardage during 7-on-7 drills Wednesday.

Bieniemy compliments Pacheco's speed, work ethic, effectiveness in the pass game and says his pass protection is coming along. There's one skill in particular, though that Bieniemy wants Pacheco to hone in on.

"Allowing the game to come to him," Bieniemy said of the rookie running back. "Learning how to be a patient runner. Understand exactly what's going on up front so now he can have a better feel on how to square his shoulders up, press it and read it out from there."

L'Jarius Sneed and Rashad Fenton are the veterans in the Chiefs' secondary, along with safety Justin Reid. Reid is in his fifth year in the NFL, Fenton his fourth and Sneed his third.

Maybe sooner than normal, Sneed has become a mentor for rookie corners Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams and Jaylen Watson. First-year pros Dicaprio Bootle and Brandin Dandridge are also guys competing hard for time, along with several others.

"With the young guys coming in, I feel like I'm the veteran of the crew," Sneed remarked. "But I've learned a lot from (when I was a rookie) to now. From the inside I learned a lot, and I learned a lot from the outside with my techniques."

Williams, who's a fairly safe bet to make the 53-man active roster at this point, was flattered when he heard that Sneed actually looks at Williams for certain techniques and pointers.

"Almost any time I'm coming off the field, I'm asking (Sneed) how I can do this, and what did he do right here," Williams said.&nbsp; "He'll give it to you. He's not one of those guys who's in his own little world. He'll come and offer some of that wisdom. At the same time, him being humble and knowing how to speak to the rookies so we understand it, that's a plus. I love him."

Williams, drafted in the fourth round this year out of Fayetteville State, is one four players on the Chiefs' roster who came up from Division II college football. Another one is Dandridge, who played and graduated from the institution that hosts training camp - Missouri Western.

Dandridge has been, at the very least, making a case for the practice squad. He nearly had an interception in last Saturday's game at Chicago, and had a great PBU against Aaron Parker in Tuesday's practice.

Like Sneed, Dandridge is another player who Williams talks to often.

"I speak to Dandridge about the playbook and try to get some of his skillset," Williams said. "Brandin is a great player. He's versatile. He can play on the outside, he can play some of that nickel spot. You know, I talk to him about some of the things he expects when he sees certain formations or certain looks."

Harrison Butker supports Justin Reid's kicking

Kicker Harrison Butker missed Monday's practice due to ankle soreness, but was back and at full strength both Tuesday and Wednesday.

He was seen giving lead contender for backup kicker, Justin Reid, a hug in Saturday's game after Reid knocked through a point after right before halftime.

Butker says Reid "has a big leg, but not a lot of efficiency." Reid has continued to take a handful of reps placekicking in practice, especially Monday when Butker was gone.&nbsp;

One thing is certain - Butker is glad to have another player willing and capable to at least try field goals.

"I'm all for it," Butker said gladly. "I'm all for evolving the game and pushing the limits. So, to have more people who are enthusiastic about being kickers, I'm all for it."

The Chiefs hold their final practice of training camp on Thursday with an early 8:15 a.m. start.

Chris Jones, Mecole Hardman leave camp practice early Wednesday

(AP) — Sonny Gray matched his season high with 10 strikeouts and Gio Urshela had four hits as the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 9-0. 

Gilberto Celestino homered and Luis Arraez picked up three more hits to raise his MLB-best batting average to .336. The Twins moved within a game of AL Central-leading Cleveland. 

Gray exited to a standing ovation when manager Rocco Baldelli pulled him in the seventh after hits by Salvador Perez and Vinnie Pasquantino. Gray had allowed just one hit through six innings.

Gray fans 10, Urshela 4 hits as Twins blank Royals 9-0

The Kansas City Chiefs had to make their first cuts from the 90-man roster this week, but they also added one player - defensive tackle Danny Shelton.

A 6-foot-2, 345-pound lineman who enters his eighth season in the league, Shelton has spent time previously with Cleveland, New England, Detroit and the New York Giants.

He’s worked with the Chiefs a total of two days so far, but Shelton hopes he can stay in Kansas City long term.

"I don't like having to move my dogs, my kids," he said. "If I'm able to contribute and coaches see that...if I'm here longer, then I'm here longer."

Shelton owns 72 career starts, 278 career tackles, 17 career tackles for loss and six career sacks. He looks to be a run stopper and pass rusher up the middle along with Pro Bowler Chris Jones.

Again, it's early, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says Shelton is still getting "acclimated" and figuring out what exact role he'll have on the defense. Still, Shelton expresses excitement about being in Kansas City.

"We got some ballers on this team," Shelton said. "I'm excited to be here, feed off their energy, play with them, compete with them and go to work."

The Chiefs also signed 13-year pro and defensive end Carlos Dunlap in the early days of training camp.

The Chiefs announced Tuesday that they have waived defensive end Austin Edwards and receiver Devin Gray to get their roster down to 85 players, per NFL deadline.

Gray was just signed to the Chiefs from the USFL on August 6. NFL teams will have to cut five more players by next Tuesday with the 53-man roster being decided by August 30.

It was a cool, wet morning at Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph Tuesday, and it seemed like the defense played through it well. Solid pass coverage, strong reps in blocking drills, a Justin Reid interception on a tipped ball, quarterback pressure and so on.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says his players were sluggish Monday coming off of a Saturday game and subsequent travel, but he saw a solid bounce back Tuesday.

"The (second and third-team defense) got a lot of reps and that's a quick turnaround," Spagnuolo said. "That might have had a little bit to do with it. There's really no excuses. That's what we talked about (Monday) night. We can't be wasting any days. I thought we did a nice job bouncing back today."

Receiver Juju Smith-Schuster did not work Tuesday due to a sore knee. Blake Bell is still out with a hip flexor injury. Kicker Harrison Butker was back after ankle soreness Monday.

Punter Tommy Townsend was absent for a second straight day for personal reasons. Right tackle Lucas Niang remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from knee surgery.

Fenton started camp on the PUP list, as he was recovering from a shoulder injury sustained late last season. It wasn't clear as to whether or not he'd be ready to participate in camp.

Fenton came back on August 9, got reacclimated and has now taken his spot back as a top corner on the first-team defense along with L'Jarius Sneed.

Fenton remarked Tuesday that's he's "back to 100%." Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has noticed this, too. He's also noticed Fenton helping the younger corners, like rookies Joshua Williams, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.

Each of those rookies saw significant playing time at Chicago last Saturday, and will certainly get more reps in the preseason. Spagnuolo wants to see those youngsters continue to get better.

"To me, it still comes back to how you respond in a game," Spags said. "They've got some more games to go here, and more than anything, how they respond when it doesn't go well. That's really what I have my eye on."

The Chiefs practice Wednesday and Thursday to conclude training camp in 2022. Kansas City will play at home against Washington on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second preseason game.

Rookie receiver Skyy Moore, who had three catches for 23 yards against Chicago, looks forward to playing at Arrowhead Stadium for the first time as an NFL player.

"I'm anticipating (the atmosphere) being electric," Moore said. "That's what everybody around here just talks about. They say Arrowhead is the best stadium in the league. I'm going to take their word for it until I see otherwise."

 </figure>By TOMMY REZACSt. Joseph PostThe Kansas City Chiefs had to make their first cuts from the 90-man roster this week, but they also added one player - defensive tackle Danny Shelton.A 6-foot-2, 345-pound lineman who enters his eighth season in the league, Shelton has spent time previously with Cleveland, New England, Detroit and the New York Giants.He’s worked with the Chiefs a total of two days so far, but Shelton hopes he can stay in Kansas City long term."I don't like having to move my dogs, my kids," he said. "If I'm able to contribute and coaches see that...if I'm here longer, then I'm here longer."Shelton owns 72 career starts, 278 career tackles, 17 career tackles for loss and six career sacks. He looks to be a run stopper and pass rusher up the middle along with Pro Bowler Chris Jones.Again, it's early, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says Shelton is still getting "acclimated" and figuring out what exact role he'll have on the defense. Still, Shelton expresses excitement about being in Kansas City."We got some ballers on this team," Shelton said. "I'm excited to be here, feed off their energy, play with them, compete with them and go to work."The Chiefs also signed 13-year pro and defensive end Carlos Dunlap in the early days of training camp.Further roster cutsThe Chiefs announced Tuesday that they have waived defensive end Austin Edwards and receiver Devin Gray to get their roster down to 85 players, per NFL deadline.Gray was just signed to the Chiefs from the USFL on August 6. NFL teams will have to cut five more players by next Tuesday with the 53-man roster being decided by August 30.Good day for the defenseIt was a cool, wet morning at Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph Tuesday, and it seemed like the defense played through it well. Solid pass coverage, strong reps in blocking drills, a Justin Reid interception on a tipped ball, quarterback pressure and so on.Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says his players were sluggish Monday coming off of a Saturday game and subsequent travel, but he saw a solid bounce back Tuesday."The (second and third-team defense) got a lot of reps and that's a quick turnaround," Spagnuolo said. "That might have had a little bit to do with it. There's really no excuses. That's what we talked about (Monday) night. We can't be wasting any days. I thought we did a nice job bouncing back today."Injury updateReceiver Juju Smith-Schuster did not work Tuesday due to a sore knee. Blake Bell is still out with a hip flexor injury. Kicker Harrison Butker was back after ankle soreness Monday.Punter Tommy Townsend was absent for a second straight day for personal reasons. Right tackle Lucas Niang remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from knee surgery.Rashad Fenton - ahead of scheduleFenton started camp on the PUP list, as he was recovering from a shoulder injury sustained late last season. It wasn't clear as to whether or not he'd be ready to participate in camp.Fenton came back on August 9, got reacclimated and has now taken his spot back as a top corner on the first-team defense along with L'Jarius Sneed.Fenton remarked Tuesday that's he's "back to 100%." Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has noticed this, too. He's also noticed Fenton helping the younger corners, like rookies Joshua Williams, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson.Each of those rookies saw significant playing time at Chicago last Saturday, and will certainly get more reps in the preseason. Spagnuolo wants to see those youngsters continue to get better."To me, it still comes back to how you respond in a game," Spags said. "They've got some more games to go here, and more than anything, how they respond when it doesn't go well. That's really what I have my eye on."The Chiefs practice Wednesday and Thursday to conclude training camp in 2022. Kansas City will play at home against Washington on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second preseason game.Rookie receiver Skyy Moore, who had three catches for 23 yards against Chicago, looks forward to playing at Arrowhead Stadium for the first time as an NFL player."I'm anticipating (the atmosphere) being electric," Moore said. "That's what everybody around here just talks about. They say Arrowhead is the best stadium in the league. I'm going to take their word for it until I see otherwise."<figure>

Danny Shelton settling in with the Chiefs as the end of training camp draws near

(AP) — Max Kepler went 3 for 4 with a slump-busting RBI to give Minnesota’s lagging lineup a lift, and the Twins started a vital homestand with a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. 

Kepler snapped an 0-for-29 skid with his one-out single in the second inning against Royals starter Kris Bubic. The Twins were 0 for 18 with runners in scoring position over their previous two games. 

Joe Ryan pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win as the Twins moved within two games of AL Central leader Cleveland. The Guardians split a doubleheader with Detroit.

The Royals take on the Twins again Tuesday evening with first pitch at 6:40 central. Coverage begins at 6:00 on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

Kepler helps Twins bats get going in 4-2 win over Royals

Bishop LeBlond volleyball has been, historically, quite successful.

Ten district titles in the last 12 years. Twelve of the last 13 seasons ending with 20-plus wins.

And yet, 2021 stands out among the rest. The Eagles became the first high school program in St. Joseph city history to reach a state championship match.

"It was so fun," senior middle Paige Perry said of the experience. "It was just even better with my team. I know we're so proud of what we accomplished and I know we're trying to bring that back this season."

LeBlond fell in straight sets to Hermann in the Class 2 state title match in Cape Girardeau last November - a Hermann program that's made the Final Four six straight years and has won state five times since 2010 alone.

Kim Huss enters her 18th season as head volleyball coach at LeBlond. She believes the Eagles return enough talent to make another run toward the Final Four.

"We finished with a really young team," Huss said of last season. "And we were starting a lot of sophomores and juniors who are back this year, and we get to go again with them. We know we're losing a couple of seniors who contributed, but we also know we're bringing back some statistical leaders."

Senior Sadie Ward is the lead returning attacker, tallying 267 kills and 67 ace serves last year. She also had 348 digs - second most for the Eagles in 2021.

"I'm excited," Ward said. "I hope we get back (to the Final Four), but obviously, we can't think too much ahead. You have to focus on every game, and fight to take it back."

Perry is back, along with junior and fellow middle blocker Maddie Sego. The two combined for 114 total blocks last season.

"I think we're pretty confident," Perry said. "I just know we need to stay humble, because if we get too cocky, we're not going to get very far."

Kyla Conard, now a junior, was the lead setter last season with 696 assists, though senior Abbey Konz will be in the mix there as well. Konz was the starting setter during her sophomore year, but missed her junior season in 2021 due to injury.

The now graduated Emily Welter was the go-to libero, but with 338 serves received and 348 digs last year, Ward can be a contender there.

However she contributes, Ward has one clear goal in mind.

"Obviously getting back (to the state title match)," she said. "I really hope...I mean, winning state would be amazing, but just going back would be awesome, too."

Whatever happens this season, Huss says her team has lots to be proud of, seeing as LeBlond is still the only volleyball program in St. Joseph history to even reach a Final Four. The Eagles have done it now three times since 2012.

"They're going to be able to hold their heads high for awhile," Huss said of her current group, "because they're only team in St. Joe to ever play in state volleyball championship. So, we want to get back there obviously. That's the goal, but I do think there's a lot of things along the way. It's not even something we've talked a lot about."

This season marks Huss's 18th as LeBlond's head volleyball coach and her second as principal. She's busy in the fall no doubt, and she's coached in some high pressure matches. Yet, the volleyball court is where Huss feels the most at ease.

"I always tell people that this two hours in the gym every day is the most relaxing and enjoyable part of my day," Huss said. "Any time in the gym watching volleyball is great. Going to coaching clinics and things like that. So, I put a lot into this program and I can't let it go yet."

For the seniors on Huss's roster who will part ways with the program after this season, they'd like nothing more than to take it one step further and deliver a title for their coach and school.

"(Coach Huss) likes to treat us like family," Ward said. "Obviously, she pushes us hard. She wants to get back (to the title) too I assume. So, hopefully, we give it our all."

LeBlond will take part in the city jamboree on August 23 and then host Rock Port on August 29 to officially open the season.
