The St. Joseph Mustangs started off a four game road trip by pushing their win streak to three games on Sunday evening, winning over the Sedalia Bombers 8-4 in Sedalia.&nbsp;

The scoring started in the third inning as left fielder Easton Bruce earned a bases loaded walk, bringing across catcher Oscar Pegg unearned after Pegg reached first to start the inning on an error.&nbsp; Pegg would drive in the second run of the game in the top of the fourth, grounding out to shortstop and allowing Bishop Leblond alumni Will Dryburg to score, pushing the lead to 2-0 at the end of the top half of the fourth.&nbsp;

The Bombers would narrow the lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Indy Stanley would get his lone hit of the game, a home run to left narrowing the lead to 2-1 at the end of the fourth.&nbsp; After a scoreless fifth inning, the Mustangs would put the game away in the sixth.

Six runs would come across to score in the top of the sixth, the scoring starting with a Pegg double that drove in two.&nbsp; Following the Pegg double, Lafayette alumni Cole Slibowski would single to score Pegg,advancing to second on the throw, then after Slibowski advanced to third base on a passed ball, fellow Lafayette alum Brayden Luikart would single to bring him home.

Luikart would advance to second on a wild pitch, then after walks to Ryan Callahan and Bruce, Michael Paule would push across both Luikart and Callahan with a single to left, scoring the final two runs of the inning and pushing the lead to 8-1 at the end of the top half of the sixth.&nbsp;

Sedalia would add runs in the sixth, seventh, and ninth innings before the game ended on a throw-out to second base as Bombers shortstop Nic Beech would be thrown out trying to advance.

St. Joseph Christian alum Camden Lutz went the distance, pitching a complete game, striking out two and walking six while giving up four runs on five hits, and earning the win. Micahel Paule led at the plate going 2 for 5 and driving in two runs, Oscar Pegg led the way in runs driven in with three.&nbsp;

The Mustangs are now 28-13 (26-12 Conference play) on the season and now sit 3.5 games ahead of the Clarinda A's in the MINK League North.&nbsp; They'll have an opportunity to extend that division lead on Clarinda on Monday as the road trip continues to Clarinda, Iowa to take on the A's.&nbsp; First pitch will be at 7pm.

Mustangs start road trip off with 8-4 win over Sedalia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered and tripled with three RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4 on Sunday for their second win in 10 games.

Witt and Drew Waters became the first Royals teammates to each triple and homer in the same game. In a game that sped by in 1 hour, 54 minutes, Brady Singer (6-8) won for the second time in seven starts since June 4.

“The slider was really good, had some good swing-and-miss on it, and on the changeup, too, when I needed it,” Singer said,

He needed 70 pitches through seven innings and led 7-0 before Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Francisco Mejía hit a three-run drive for the AL-best Rays (60-36).

“When you have a sinker that’s working like that and they put the ball on ground early, it provides a lot of confidence for him to be able to work quickly and be able to move through the game efficiently.” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Singer allowed four runs and seven hits in a season-high eight innings as Kansas City improved to 27-67, the second-worst record in the major leagues and ahead of only Oakland.

“That’s vintage sinkerballer,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “You’re relying on the late movement to get the ball on the ground and that’s what happened. He just had some extra movement on it today that made it a little challenging for us.”

The early lead gave Singer confidence to attack hitters.

“It set me up to be able to stay in the zone more," he said. "I was definitely more aggressive with that lead. I was staying in the zone so much. Throwing so many strikes was helping me to get them to swing early.”

Zach Eflin (10-5) gave up a season-high five runs and seven hits over a season-low three innings, allowing hits to seven of his first 11 batters. The Rays had won three straight after a season-worst seven-game losing streak.

“I had a pretty bad bullpen going into the game,” Eflin said. “I didn’t feel like I was in sync. The sinker wasn’t working. I couldn’t figure out where the ball was going. I knew something was off going into the game. I didn’t set the tone like I should have.”

In a game that started one hour later because of rain, Royals All-Star catcher Salvador Perez left in the second inning after feeling left hamstring discomfort while scoring on Melendez’s double.

MJ Melendez hit a two-out RBI double in the first and the Royals opened a 5-0 lead in the second. Waters hit an RBI triple and scored on Nick Pratto’s single. Witt, who has an extra-base hit in six straight games, hit a two-run, two-out triple.

“Seeing the guys before me put together good at-bats gives you confidence,” Witt said. “Just trying to simplify as much as possible and just trying to put a good swing on the ball.”

Waters led off the fourth against Yonny Chirinos with a 465-foot home run to the upper level of the right-field fountains.

Witt led off the fifth with his 16th homer and Melendez hit a solo homer in the eighth off Chirinos.

Royals RHP Collin Snider was optioned to Omaha and RHP Max Castillo was recalled from the Triple-A team.

Royals RHP Josh Staumont, placed on the 60-day IL on Saturday, is expected to have thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and miss the rest of the season.

RHP Matt Manning (3-1, 3.72) takes on Royals RHP Jordan Lyles (1-11, 6.42) in Kansas City on Monday.

The St. Joseph Mustangs had a lot to celebrate on Saturday night.&nbsp; It was Missouri Western night, it was another Tenderloins night, and a record breaking 6,013 fans showed up to see the Mustangs remain in first place in the MINK League North with a 10-4 win over Des Moines.&nbsp;

The night started off slow for St. Joseph though, as Des Moines took an early 2-0 lead through two innings, but after that it was all Mustangs.&nbsp; St. Joseph drew one run closer in the third before taking the lead for good in the fourth inning.&nbsp;

Lafayette alumni Jayden Little would drive in two runs with a triple and then after fellow Lafayette alum Cole Slibowski would drive Little in with a single, Ryan Callahan would score Slibowski for the final run of the frame, putting the Mustangs up 5-2 after four innings.&nbsp;

The Prospects would draw one run closer in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom half of the inning another triple, this time by catcher Ben Click would score two, and in the next at bat pinch hitter Aron Harrington who hit for Little would drive in Click with a single.&nbsp; Des Moines would struggle with command for the final two runs of the inning as both Callahan and Lafayette alum Ike Book would walk with the bases loaded, pushing the Mustangs lead to 10-3 at the end of the fifth.

The final Des Moines run would be scored in the top of the ninth with Savannah alum Braden Berry on the mound closing out the game.&nbsp;

At the plate Ryan Callahan was the leader for the Mustangs going 2 for 4 and driving in three runs.&nbsp; Mason Holton continued his strong season on the mound pitching six innings and striking out nine while giving up three runs. Holton currently sits in second place in the MINK League in strikeouts with 43 on the season.

Mustangs earn win over Des Moines on record breaking night at Phil Welch Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luke Raley had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Saturday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Jose Siri hit a pair of solo homers as the Rays won the first game 6-1 to open the second half. AL East-leading Tampa Bay has won three in a row after a season-high, seven-game losing streak and at 60-35 became the first AL team to 60 wins.

“That was awesome to come out the first games out of break like that,” the Rays' Josh Lowe said. “To start the second half this way should build some momentum for us and carry us into the second half.”

Kansas City has lost eight of nine, dropping to 26-67 and falling 41 games under .500 for the first time since under 2019 at 59-103.. The Royals were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since May 25, 2019, against the New York Yankees after going 2-0-7 in their previous nine twinbills.

Dairon Blanco's RBI grounder in the fifth put the Royals ahead 2-1 in the nightcap. Lowe tied the score with a run-scoring triple in the seventh and Raley singled in the eighth against Carlos Hernández (0-5). Harold Ramírez added a sacrifice fly in the ninth against Dylan Coleman.

Colin Poche (7-2) threw a 1-2-3 seventh. Pete Fairbanks, pitching before about 50 family and friends, worked around Salvador Perez's leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

“The Royals pitched us tough all day," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “It felt like we kind of just had to hang in there and have some timely at-bats late in the ballgame.”

Perez had four hits in the opener, one shy of his career high. His fifth-inning double made him the sixth Kansas City player with 500 extra-base hits.

Cole Ragans, a 25-year-old left-hander, made his Royals debut in the night game and allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

A day after the series opener was rained out, Tyler Glasnow (3-3) gave up one run and six hits over six innings and struck out six in the day game. Glasnow had been 0-3 in four starts since a June 14 win at Oakland.

“I felt good all game,” Glasnow said. “I kind of felt off to start, but as the innings went on I got a rhythm. It was a battle today and ended up being a good game.”

Siri homered in the third off Alec Marsh (0-3) and the ninth off Nick Wittgren for his seventh career multihomer game. Siri has 18 home runs this season.

“I know I've been striking out a lot, but everyone knows that. It felt good to connect on those two," Siri said.

Francisco Mejía gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the fifth when he homered off Marsh, who allowed two runs and five hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk. The strikeouts were a high for a Royals pitcher in his first three big league starts.

“Getting strikeouts the last two games were difficult for me,” Marsh said. “I thought the attack mode was good all game. I think mindset wise I knew to keep attacking and knowing I needed to make a pitch with two strikes.”

Kansas City's Collin Snider opened the eighth with 13 consecutive balls. Raley followed with a two-run single and Josh Lowe hit a sacrifice fly.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a 424-foot homer in the fifth.

Siri homers twice in opener, Raley gets key hit in nightcap, Rays sweep Royals 6-1 and 4-2

One day after an out of division loss to the Kansas City Monarchs, the St. Joseph Mustangs returned to MINK League play with a boom, winning in seven innings against the Chillicothe Mudcats 16-4 on Friday night.&nbsp;

It wasn't easy though for the Mustangs to start.&nbsp; The Mudcats would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before St. Joseph would knot the game in the bottom half, as Savannah alumni Noah Bodenhausen scored on a wild pitch, and they would later take the lead as Lafayette alumni Brayden Luikart would score on yet another wild pitch.&nbsp;

Chillicothe would go on to tie the game back up in the top of the second, before once again in the bottom half of the inning the Mustangs would take the lead back thanks to Luikart who drove in two runs on a single and later in the inning a Ryan Callahan single would drive in two more, giving them a 6-2 lead at the end of two innings.&nbsp;

The Mudcats would draw a little closer in the fourth innings driving in their final two runs of the game, but the Mustangs would go on to score one run in the bottom half of the inning, and then score eight more in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading Chillicothe 15-4 after five frames.&nbsp;

The final run of the game came in the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly from Callahan that would score Luikart giving them the 16-4 lead before Ryker Curry would close out the game in his third inning of work in the seventh where the game would be called by run rule.&nbsp;

It was quite the showing for two Lafayette alums on the team as both Luikart and Jayden Little were 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI's. Luikart was just a home run shy of the cycle, while Little also had one stolen base on the night.&nbsp; Callahan also drove in four on the night while going 2 for 4.

On the mound Michael Infranca pitched four innings giving up all four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out one, before Curry came in and pitched three innings of relief also striking out one and giving up three hits.&nbsp;

 </figure>By MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostOne day after an out of division loss to the Kansas City Monarchs, the St. Joseph Mustangs returned to MINK League play with a boom, winning in seven innings against the Chillicothe Mudcats 16-4 on Friday night.&nbsp;It wasn't easy though for the Mustangs to start.&nbsp; The Mudcats would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before St. Joseph would knot the game in the bottom half, as Savannah alumni Noah Bodenhausen scored on a wild pitch, and they would later take the lead as Lafayette alumni Brayden Luikart would score on yet another wild pitch.&nbsp;Chillicothe would go on to tie the game back up in the top of the second, before once again in the bottom half of the inning the Mustangs would take the lead back thanks to Luikart who drove in two runs on a single and later in the inning a Ryan Callahan single would drive in two more, giving them a 6-2 lead at the end of two innings.&nbsp;The Mudcats would draw a little closer in the fourth innings driving in their final two runs of the game, but the Mustangs would go on to score one run in the bottom half of the inning, and then score eight more in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading Chillicothe 15-4 after five frames.&nbsp;The final run of the game came in the sixth inning, a sacrifice fly from Callahan that would score Luikart giving them the 16-4 lead before Ryker Curry would close out the game in his third inning of work in the seventh where the game would be called by run rule.&nbsp;It was quite the showing for two Lafayette alums on the team as both Luikart and Jayden Little were 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI's. Mustangs bounce back after Thursday loss with seven inning win over Chillicothe Friday

Kansas City is set to host the World Cup in 2026, and Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph is hoping to play a role in that.

The University hopes to be a host and practice site for a country's team. Missouri Western athletic director Andy Carter says being the home of Chiefs training camp bolsters the University's resume.

"(Kansas City) knows we know how to host," Carter told KFEQ Radio. "With the work we do with the Chiefs. Now, we're kind of in a waiting game. When the countries get put on their sites, then they'll make options to those countries. Then, as I understand it, it'll be a negotiation between us and that country."

FIFA did a site visit to Missouri Western last year. Kansas City is one of 11 U.S. cities selected to host the World Cup in 2026.

Carter says potentially hosting an international team will create more work, but also more excitement.

"There's some facility work we'll have to do on the back fields to get that up to speed, but I think that's doable," he said. "At least, they thought it was doable when they agreed to do it. Yeah, it's exciting. It'll make for a very busy summer that summer, because we'll presumably have the Chiefs (training camp) as well."

Carter says the prospect of hosting a World Cup teams speaks well to the quality of facilities and people the University has.

"It's not a big secret that we're blessed to have great facilities and we have high quality people who know how to operate events," he said. "So that not only does the participant get what they need, but then the fan interaction is good and it makes for a good experience. We're excited and looking forward to that opportunity."

The World Cup is the most viewed sporting event in the world, with last year's final drawing 1.5 billion viewers worldwide. There were around five billion total viewers over the course of the month-long World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

The 2026 World Cup could generate up to $695 million of economic activity in the state of Missouri.

The St. Joseph Mustangs fell to the KC Monarchs 6-3 Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium in an out-of-league matchup.

The Mustangs led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Monarchs scored four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.

The Monarchs were limited to just two hits, but they drew nine walks and benefitted from three Mustang errors.

Easton Bruce led St. Joseph at the plate, going 2-for-5. The Mustangs had six hits, but struck out 13 times and stranded 10 base runners.

The Mustangs fall to 25-13 on the season. St. Joseph stays home Friday to host Chillicothe. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Mustangs fall at home to KC Monarchs Thursday

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost to the Carroll Merchants 10-9 in walk-off fashion Wednesday in a game that went 11 innings at Merchants Park in Carroll.

St. Joseph led 9-7 at the top of the 11th, but the Merchants scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to steal a win.

St. Joseph also led 7-3 in the top of the ninth before the Merchants scored four runs to tie the game and send it to extras.

Lafayette alum Ike Book went 1-for-5 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run. Ben Click was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Starting pitcher Aron Harrington went six innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. He struck out four and walked three. Jaren Guck was charged with the loss.

The Mustangs are now 25-12 on the season. The team returns home for a three-game homestand beginning with a game Thursday against the KC Monarchs.

The St. Joseph Mustangs earned a doubleheader sweep at Des Moines Tuesday, winning the first game 4-2 and the second one 12-0.

Mustangs sweep doubleheader at Des Moines Tuesday

Buzz Verduzco just concluded a 23-year-long tenure as Missouri Western's head baseball coach this past May.

Following his retirement, another coaching opportunity came his way - this one at the high school level and in the same city.

Verduzco says St. Joseph Central athletic director David Lau approached him about the opportunity to take over as the Indians' next head softball coach.

"I was able to visit with David Lau, who used to be at Missouri Western," Verduzco told KFEQ Radio. "He approached me and I needed some time to think about it. I talked to my wife (Tracy) about it and I knew I still wanted to help kids, so this was the perfect opportunity, actually."

Verduzco was officially announced as Central's next head softball coach on June 26. He succeeds Kendra Hodgin, who had been the head coach there for the previous five seasons.

For decades, Verduzco has coached college baseball. He was an assistant at his alma mater, Washington State, for 10 years before taking over as Missouri Western's head man in 1999.

He recorded 629 wins with the Griffons, including 16 winning seasons, an MIAA championship in 2013 and four NCAA tournament berths.&nbsp;

As much success as he had coaching baseball, Verduzco knows shifting to high school softball is a big change.

He's relied on former Missouri Western softball coach Jen Bagley-Trotter (2002-2021), current Griffon softball coach Joe Yegge and others as he gets ready for this change.

"Jennifer, we worked together for over 20 years at Missouri Western," Verduzco said. "She's been an awesome support and great resource. Coach Yegge, who I've gotten to know over the last year, he's been terrific. There's been a lot of different people I can run to."

Verduzco, who was inducted into the St. Joseph Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this summer, says he's proud of what he and his teams achieved over the years at Missouri Western as he reflected on his long tenure.

"Maybe some people look at it as a small market school, compared to other teams in the league," Verduzco said. "That didn't bother us. We wanted to make sure we put everything into it we could to make it a contender nationally and regionally and to make a lot of noise within the conference, which we did, and we were proud of that."

Buzz Verduzco ready for new challenge as St. Joseph Central's new softball coach

The MINK League All-Star game took place Sunday night in Chillicothe with the South Division beating the North 7-1.

Eleven St. Joseph Mustangs took part in the game. The Mustangs went 6-for-17 at the plate and combined to throw three innings Sunday.

Trevor McCollum drove in the only run of the game for the North Division All-Stars, while Michael Infranca pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

In addition, the Mustangs' Easton Bruce finished as the runner-up in the MINK League home run derby.

St. Joseph is off Monday. They play a doubleheader at Des Moines on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

South Division wins MINK League All-Star Game, several Mustangs shine

The Kansas City Royals selected three players on the first day of the MLB Draft Sunday night.

With the eighth overall pick in the first round, the Royals selected Blake Mitchell, a left-handed hitting catcher from Sinton High School in Texas.

Mitchell was named the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year each of the last two seasons and is committed to LSU.

In the second round, the Royals selected right-handed pitcher Blake Wolters out of Mahomet-Seymour High School in Illinois. Wolters recorded a 0.43 ERA this past season in 49 innings. He allowed just 13 hits and recorded 106 strikeouts.

And with the 66th overall pick, the Royals selected left-handed outfielder Carson Roccaforte out of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Roccaforte batted .318 this past season and .325 in his three-year college career. The MLB Draft will resumes Monday at 1:00 p.m. CT with rounds 3-10 on MLB.com.

Royals select three players on first day of MLB Draft Sunday

CLEVELAND (AP) — Ryan Yarbrough completed a journey he never expected to take.

Two months after suffering facial fractures when he was struck by a 106 mph line drive, Yarbrough returned to the mound Sunday and helped the struggling Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 win over Cleveland that felt extra special.

“More than I could have dreamed of,” Yarbrough said.

With his wife, daughter and other family members at Progressive Field, Yarbrough (2-4), who didn't know what the future held when he was smashed by the liner from Oakland's Ryan Noda on May 7, pitched six solid innings as the Royals ended a six-game skid.

Yarbrough's statistical line was less important than him returning from a frightening moment that could have ended his career.

“I have an understanding of what happened and coming back from it and what could have been and how lucky and blessed I am,” said the 31-year-old left-hander. “It’s just been great and the amount of support from the guys, especially after the game. It's been great.”

Yarbrough's return was a huge boost for the Royals, who haven't had much to celebrate so far this season.

“Incredible," said center fielder Kyle Isbel, who homered and made a game-saving catch in the ninth for Kansas City. "That’s not just a baseball injury. That’s life. Seeing him walk into the dugout today, the energy he had was really incredible and it really sparked the dugout.”

Yarbrough said the quick response by Kansas City's medical personnel played an important role in his recovery. He feels lucky that he didn't need stitches or surgeries.

Once his facial bones healed, Yarbrough was determined to get back quickly.

"I don’t think anybody knew what the time frame was going to be or how long it was going to be,” he said. “It was just kind of a waiting game. Extremely blessed.”

After his first pitch, Yarbrough let his instincts take over.

“It was great. I felt like I’ve been able to soak it in the last couple days and really just try to think about it as going to back to work as much as possible," he said.

Carlos Hernández pitched two scoreless innings and Scott Barlow finished up for his 11th save, but not without some nervous moments.

Barlow gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before Myles Straw sent a pitch toward the gap in right center. But Isbel got a nice jump and raced to his left before making his diving grab as Kansas City avoided a winless road trip.

“I just put my head down and ran to the spot,” Isbel said. "I stayed aggressive the whole time and I knew I could get to it.”

Michael Massey hit a two-run triple in Kansas City's three-run sixth off Shane Bieber (5-6), who came in 6-0 in 14 career starts against the Royals. The right-hander allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City staggered into the All-Star break at 26-65 — the second-most losses before the break in franchise history.

Cleveland reached the season's unofficial midpoint in first place in the AL Central and at .500 (45-45) or better for the seventh year in a row.

It's not certain how much longer Bieber will be around.

The Guardians will consider trading the 2020 Cy Young Award winner, who is only under contractual control through next season, before the Aug. 1 deadline. Cleveland could be enticed to move the 28-year-old for the right package to help them this season or in the future.

Isbel led off the fifth with his second homer, a shot over the wall in right-center, to tie it 1-1.

Lopez threw out Cleveland's Amed Rosario trying to go from first to third in the sixth inning. Rosario was initially ruled safe, but the Royals won the replay challenge.

“I knew they might be a little aggressive knowing it was my first time in the outfield in professional baseball,” said Lopez, who has played shortstop, second and third.

Lopez, who hadn't played the outfield in a game since high school, has been shagging flies over the past two weeks so he'd be ready to play if needed.

Royals: OF Edward Oliveras (oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day injured list but mostly to insure Kansas City was at full strength for the series finale. Manager Matt Quartaro called Oliveras' injury “extremely mild.” He was scratched from Saturday's lineup with back tightness.

It won't get any easier for Kansas City, which will return from the break to host AL East-leading Tampa Bay. RHP Alec Marsh (0-2, 7.00 ERA) will start the series opener against Rays RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-3, 4.10).

Yarbrough returns from facial fractures, pitches Royals past Guardians 4-1 to snap 6-game skid

CLEVELAND (AP) — Top prospect Gavin Williams struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings for his first victory in the majors, brothers Bo and Josh Naylor drove in two runs apiece and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Kansas City Royals 10-6 on Saturday.

Williams (1-1) gave up three runs on eight hits and walked one in his fourth start. The right-hander made his debut June 21, two years after being drafted in the first round by Cleveland out of East Carolina.

Both Naylors had two singles and a double as the Guardians collected a season-high 18 hits, taking over first place in the AL Central from Minnesota at 45-44. They built a 5-0 lead after four innings en route to moving above .500 for the first time since April 19.

“Honestly, it’s awesome to get my first win out of the way,” the 6-foot-6, 250-pound Williams said. “Even though I just got here, being in first place, that’s where everyone wants to be. I feel like we’re going to keep doing well.”

Josh Bell went 3 for 3 with two walks and two RBIs, and Amed Rosario had three hits in Cleveland’s third consecutive victory. Josh Naylor has 32 RBIs over the last 32 games, while Bo Naylor broke out of a 1-for-19 slump with his second three-hit performance.

“It’s super good to see progress, little by little,” Bo Naylor said. “And Gavin was electric. He makes the game fun, being able to catch him.”

The Royals scored six times between the fifth and eighth to close to 7-6, but failed to tie it in the eighth when Nicky Lopez was tagged out mere inches from home plate on Maikel Garcia’s RBI double to center.

Myles Straw fired the ball to cutoff man Andrés Giménez, whose throw home to Naylor couldn’t have been more perfectly placed. Guardians manager Terry Francona called it “the best relay I’ve ever seen.”

“They beat us on that play,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “It was a great relay.”

Bobby Witt Jr. went 3 for 5 with a solo homer, RBI triple and stolen base for the Royals, who are 0-6 on their seven-game trip and have been outscored 41-14. It was Witt’s sixth three-hit game of the season.

Kansas City starter Brady Singer (5-8) worked five innings, allowing six runs on a career-high 13 hits while striking out three. The right-hander is 2-4 with a 7.54 ERA in seven road outings.

“I missed quite a few spots and the ones in the zone were getting hit,” Singer said. “I don’t think I got into a groove the whole day.”

The Guardians tacked on three runs in the eighth against Nick Wittgren, restoring their four-run lead. Bell’s two-run single was the big blow, allowing All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase to pitch the ninth in a non-save situation.

The first pitch was delayed by exactly an hour because of rain.

Royals LHP Ryan Yarbrough, who was struck on the temple by a 106.2 mph liner off the bat of Oakland’s Ryan Noda on May 7, will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Sunday.

Yarbrough suffered multiple facial fractures, but never lost consciousness during the frightening incident at Kauffman Stadium. The 31-year-old made his final rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Omaha, tossing six scoreless innings.

“Ryan has recovered well from it, both mentally and physically,” Quatraro said. “He feels great and is ready to go.”

Royals: OF Edward Olivares (back tightness) was a late scratch after reporting to the ballpark with discomfort. MJ Melendez shifted to left field and Michael Massey was moved into the lineup at designated hitter.

Guardians: RHP Peyton Battenfield (right shoulder inflammation) is eligible to come off the 60-day IL on July 18. The rookie has made one rehab appearance for Double-A Akron, walking four over three scoreless innings.

Guardians RHP Shane Bieber (5-5, 3.66 ERA) was set to face Yarbrough (1-4, 6.15 ERA) on Sunday in the series finale. Bieber is the only Cleveland pitcher not to miss a start, taking the ball 18 times in the first 89 games.

Gavin Williams gets first career victory in Guardians' 10-6 win over the Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Aaron Civale struck out a season-high nine over seven innings and Josh Bell hit a two-run homer, sending the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Civale (3-2) allowed two hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 100 pitches, 70 for strikes. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.56 in his seventh start since missing two months with a strained left oblique.

“Aaron was lights out with nine punchies, only two hits,” Bell said. “When we get an outing like that with our bullpen, we should win. Once we get going and things click, we’ll be all right.”

Trevor Stephan worked the eighth and Emmanuel Clase picked up his 25th save, wrapping up the two-hitter. Cleveland (44-44) won its second straight and improved to .500 for the first time since April 28, when it was 13-13.

“The last couple of times out, Aaron is commanding so well and he’s been throwing strikes, it’s fun to watch,” Guardians manager Terry Francona said. “He was working so fast tonight. Heck, everybody was.”

The game was completed in 1 hour and 51 minutes, making it the shortest nine-inning contest in the history of Progressive Field, which opened in 1994.

Bell’s blast onto the home run porch in left came off Royals starter Daniel Lynch (2-4) and extended the Guardians’ lead to 3-0 in the fourth. Josh Naylor singled home Amed Rosario in the first, then singled and scored on Bell’s ninth homer of the year.

Naylor and Bell are responsible for 35.7% of Cleveland’s RBIs, the most by a duo in the majors. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor of the Mets are second at 30.7%.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled in the fourth, MJ Melendez doubled in the fifth and Maikel Garcia walked in the ninth for Kansas City’s only baserunners.

“I’m trying to make sure that I’m focused and have conviction with each pitch,” Civale said. “After my injuries the past few years, I need to give it my best effort because I know I have to make the most of it.”

The Royals are 0-5 on their seven-game trip, totaling 26 hits while being outscored 31-8. Lynch gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.

Civale struck out Salvador Perez and Nick Pratto in all six of their plate appearances. Pratto was caught looking all three times, the last of which caused his frustration to surface. He was ejected by plate umpire Brennan Miller.
