KANSAS CITY (AP) — Von Miller had just finished talking about the importance of the Buffalo Bills beating the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium when he stopped in the hallway outside the visiting locker room and grabbed Josh Allen in a hug.

The Bills quarterback was masterful again on Sunday.

Allen threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead toss to Dawson Knox with 1:04 left, and the Bills held on for a 24-20 victory to exact a measure of revenge for their epic overtime loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in last year's playoffs.

“I've come to this stadium a whole bunch of times. Been at this same podium. But I ain't have many smiles,” Miller said. “It just feels so good to go out there with my teammates, to work toward something like this and come out on top.”

Stefon Diggs had 10 catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, and Gabe Davis also had a TD catch after torching Kansas City for four of them in January, as the Bills (5-1) won in the same place their season had ended the past two seasons.

It was the divisional round in January. It was the AFC championship game the year before that.

“Nothing we did last year translates to what we're doing this year,” Allen said with a shrug. “What happened in the past, that's where it is. All we can do is focus on the next one. Today was the next one.”

For a moment, it looked as if it could be the next heartbreak.

The Chiefs got the ball back after Knox's touchdown with plenty of time left. But after Mahomes misfired on first down, Buffalo cornerback Taron Johnson jumped his pass to Skyy Moore and picked him off with 51 seconds left.

“It was a great battle. You love these games,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You just don't want to be sitting on this end of it. But you love the competition and the way the guys get after it.”

Mahomes finished with 338 yards passing to go with two touchdowns and two interceptions, including one in the end zone early in the game. JuJu Smith-Schuster had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Travis Kelce had eight grabs for 108 yards as well.

The down-to-the-wire nail-biter was a fitting follow-up to their playoff game, when the teams combined to score 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation, and the Chiefs (4-2) won it on the first possession of overtime.

The teams scored on their final six possessions that night, and they picked up Sunday right where they left off — with a small caveat. The Bills and Chiefs both marched the length of the field in the first quarter, chewing up defenses that looked downright lost, only to turn the ball over when they reached the red zone.

Then the similarities to their incredible divisional playoff game really began.

Mahomes, at his improvisational best, stayed alive long enough in a collapsing pocket to find Smith-Schuster for a 42-yard TD reception. And after the Bills blew another red-zone opportunity, when Allen threw incomplete on fourth-and-goal at Kansas City's 3, Buffalo answered with a touchdown drive in the final minute of the half.

Backed up to its own 1-yard line, Allen threw a dart to Davis for a first down. He hit Knox, Diggs and Khalil Shakir on his next three throws, then had Davis beat rookie cornerback Joshua Williams for a 34-yard TD catch.

The drive took 73 seconds, covered 96 yards and gave the Bills a 10-7 lead.

And just like January, the Chiefs answered in seconds. Only instead of using 13 to drive within range of Harrison Butker's 49-yard field goal to force overtime, they had 16 seconds to move 27 yards and set up his 62-yarder to knot the game.

The back-and-forth continued in the second half: Buffalo took the lead after Butker's 51-yard miss when Diggs hauled in a long TD catch, then Kansas City drove 83 yards and Mecole Hardman tied it with his short reception.

When the Bills failed on another fourth-down attempt, Butker added a 44-yarder to give Kansas City a 20-17 lead.

But unlike January, the Bills made the plays down the stretch.

Allen's scrambling, hurdling run on their go-ahead drive got them in scoring position, and his throw to Knox — a pinpoint dime along the sideline — gave the Bills the lead. And when Johnson came up with his interception a few minutes later, the Bills had their long-awaited revenge in Kansas City.

“There were still some bad memories from this place last year,” Knox said, “so it was nice to wipe those from our minds.”

The Chiefs visit the 49ers next Sunday in their final game before their bye. Kickoff in that game is set for 3:25 central. The game will be carried on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) and Q Country 92.7 FM in St. Joseph.

Washburn takes lead late, Northwest kicks walk off field goal for win

The Washburn Ichabods scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to come back from a 23-10 halftime deficit, but Northwest Missouri State kicker Cole Lammel hit a 36 yard field goal with two seconds left, giving the Bearcats a 32-30 win.&nbsp;

It was all Northwest in the first half following a safety that gave the Bearcats the first points of the game.&nbsp; Sophomore quarterback Mike Hohensee would go on to connect on an 18 yard touchdown to wide receiver Keegan Sturdy.&nbsp;

The scoreboard lit up even more in the second quarter.&nbsp; Following a 33 yard field goal by Washburn kicker Kameron Lake, Hohensee would throw his second touchdown of the game, a 53 yard strike to wide receiver Kashan Griffin.&nbsp;

The Bearcats had a chance to take a 16-3 lead into halftime, but with 32 seconds left Washburn quarterback Kellen Simoncic would throw a 30 yard touchdown to Peter Afful.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Northwest would catch a break though. A 37 yard kick return by Andrew Bradley gave the Bearcats good field position and after Hohensee found Griffon on a 25 yard screen play, he would find running back Jamar Moya on back to back 19 yard pass plays, the last pass resulting in a touchdown as time expired in the first half.&nbsp;

Following a scoreless third quarter both offenses would light up again. Simoncic would throw two touchdowns to begin the final frame, a 13 yard pass to Tyce Brown and a 28 yard score to Afful, giving the Ichabods their first lead of the game at 24-23.

The final two minutes were eventful.&nbsp; With 1:55 left on the clock Hohensee would throw his fourth score of the game, again finding Griffin this time for 13 yards.&nbsp; The Ichabods would answer with 24 seconds left, a 10 yard run from Simoncic.

The ultimate game winning field goal by Lammel was set up in only three plays.&nbsp; Following a 38 yard kick return from Griffin, Hohensee would find Moya on a 20 yard pass then following a timeout would find Griffin for a 23 yard pass, setting up the game winning field goal with six seconds left on the clock.&nbsp;

It was a career day for Hohensee, completeing 24 of 31 passes for a career high 366 yards and four touchdowns. Griffin caught seven passes for 163 yards and two scores and Moya had 136 all purpose yards, catching eight passes for 116 yards and rushing for 20 yards.&nbsp;

It was quite the offensive day for both teams, the Bearcats outgaining the Ichabods in total offense 439 yards to 357.&nbsp; Both teams tallied 25 first downs on the day.&nbsp;

Northwest is now 5-2 on the year following the win.&nbsp; The Bearcats will next host Northeastern State for Homecoming this Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 2pm.

Ravens shutout Central Methodist to open Heart South play

The Benedictine Ravens returned from their bye week and opened up play in the Heart Conference South with a 47-0 shutout win over Central Methodist.&nbsp;

The defense didn't skip a beat following the off week as the entire unit tallied three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and registered five sacks.&nbsp; The five sacks set a new single game high.&nbsp; The Ravens also held Central Methodist to just seven first downs.&nbsp;

Rayshon Mills needed just ten carries to pass the century mark, rushing for 102 yards and scoring twice.&nbsp; Garrett Kettle passed for 175 yards and threw two touchdowns as well.&nbsp;

Benedictine is now 6-1 on the season and will continue play in the Heart South traveling to Marshall, Missouri for a matchup with Missouri Valley College.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 2pm.&nbsp;

#19 Kansas loses offensive battle with Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel passed for 403 yards and Oklahoma defeated No. 19 Kansas 52-42 to end its losing skid at three games. 

Eric Gray ran for 176 yards, Marvin Mims had a career-high nine catches for 106 yards and Brayden Willis had five catches for a career-best 102 yards for the Sooners. It was Oklahoma’s 18th straight win over Kansas. The Sooners haven’t lost to the Jayhawks since 1997. 

Jason Bean passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns for Kansas. Lawrence Arnold had 113 yards and two touchdowns receiving and Mason Fairchild had 106 yards and two touchdowns receiving for the Jayhawks.

“They came out clicking on all cylinders,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “They played very well, very aggressive. I think we were on our heels most of the day. It was like they were playing downhill.”

Gray had 124 yards rushing in the first half, eclipsing his previous high as a Sooner before the break. The Sooners kept the Jayhawks at bay in the second half, controlling the ball for more than 17 minutes.

“Their backs were to the wall a little bit in this situation, and they came out and played extremely well,” Leipold said. “And we didn’t quite match that. And we've got to find a way if we want to be that type of team, that we can do that.”

Polls will come out later today, where it will be seen if Kansas remains in the Top 25 after losing to an unranked opponent, despite the reputation of the Sooners.&nbsp; Kansas will look to right the ship on Saturday as they travel to Waco, Texas to matchup with Baylor.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 11am and will be aired on ESPN2.

Huskers lose close battle with Boilermakers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Aidan O'Connell threw four touchdown passes and Devin Mockobee ran for a career-high 178 yards and another score as Purdue overpowered Nebraska 43-37. 

The Boilermakers have won four straight and are tied with No. 24 Illinois atop the Big Ten West Division. Nebraska had its two-game winning streak under interim coach Mickey Joseph snapped. 

Trey Palmer almost single-handedly kept the Huskers close in the second half. But after cutting the deficit to 43-37 with 5:55 to go, Nebraska never got the ball back.

“That guy just doesn't make mistakes with the football,” Jospeh said, referring to O'Connell. “He’s been in this program for six years and he doesn't make mistakes.”

The Huskers will have this week off and will be back in action on October 29th.&nbsp; The path won't get easier as the Huskers will host Illinois, currently ranked #24, in Lincoln.&nbsp; Kickoff time is to be determined.

Both the Missouri Tigers and Kansas State Wildcats had a week off and will be back in action on Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas State will travel to Forth Worth, Texas for a matchup with TCU.&nbsp; Kickoff is set for 7pm.&nbsp; The Wildcats are traveling into Texas on a three game winning streak, most recently winning against Iowa State 10-9 back on October 8th.

Missouri's bye week gave head coach Eli Drinkwitz a chance to get a closer look at some of his young guys, including Freshman quarterback Sam Horn.&nbsp;

“We're allowing some of the older guys who've had a lot of hits and a lot of plays to really work on individual (drills) and not get any team (work), but we're developing our team,” Drinkwitz said. “We're competing our younger guys, our younger players that need to continue to develop, but we also want to get longer looks at some of these young guys. The Sam Horns, the Tavorus Jones, the Marquis Gracials, the Mekhi Millers, the Connor Tollisons, Mitch Walters. These young players who are helping us and have played ... Dameon Wilson, Dreyden Norwood, Isaac Thompson ... these are guys that we know are going to help us and we need to let them keep helping us right now. Most of them didn't benefit from a spring, so this is a week that we can let them participate and compete and see where they're at."

CFB Roundup: Northwest wins on walk off field goal, Ravens shutout Eagles

Qualifying for state golf almost feels routine at this point for St. Joseph Central senior Ava Gaddie and junior Ali Perry. The two have now qualified for state for a third straight season.

It's getting through districts, they say, that doesn't feel quite as routine.

"In my mind, districts is the most nerve wracking day for me," Gaddie says. "Now, (assistant coach Chip Brock) tells us to just go out and just have fun."

Perry and Gaddie got through districts quite well this time around.&nbsp;Perry finished sixth with a +7 (79), while Gaddie finished 13th with a +15 (87) at Paradise Pointe in Smithville.

"I think we expected to see them both advance this year again," Central head coach Joy Vandel said. "We got that confirmation with their scores. When it came in, it was just kind of extra exciting to seal the deal with that."

Two district medalists is just one in a list of impressive achievements for Central girls' golf this fall. The Indians won the Greater KC Suburban Conference meet on Oct. 3 in Smithville, with Perry finishing first and Gaddie finishing second at conference respectively.

The Indians took third at the Platte County Invitational to open the season, with Perry and Gaddie both finishing in the top six.

The Indians finished second in their own Central Invitational and Perry finished fourth in a field of elite talent in the Oak Park Invitational - a day where temperatures hit 106 degrees.

With still one more high school season to go, Perry has had a prolific career at Central so far. She medaled 23rd as a freshman at state in 2020 and then tied for 13th as a sophomore last season. A top ten finish at state and perhaps an individual championship is on her list of ambitions.

"I'm really excited, actually," Perry said of the upcoming rounds at state. "I feel really confident this year, too. Way more confident than last year. Last year I was a lot more nervous because, I don't know. I had some struggles with my short game. But, over the summer I fixed that and I can hit the ball further now and it's more consistent."

Gaddie finished 55th at state in 2020 and then 62nd in 2021. But with a top 15 finish at districts just last week, she goes into her final career varsity meet relaxed and energized.

"Really looking forward to just going out and having fun," she said. "Especially with my senior year, just hope to have a good last tournament and have a good time."

Gaddie and Perry will compete at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club Monday in Joplin with the rest of the field in Class 4. Perry will be in the second flight to tee off on Monday morning at 8:39. Gaddie will go at 9:24. Both will tee off from the 10th hole to begin.

Assistant coach Chip Brock, who's helped off and on with boys' and girls' golf at Central since 1969, says the course at Joplin isn't all that different from their home course Moila Country Club - relatively small and tight with many chances for low scoring.

"I think the kids will like it," Brock said. "There's a lot of birdie opportunities there. Once they get the hang of it, I think they'll do just fine there."

It's been a fun ride in the last three seasons for both Gaddie and Perry. While Gaddie does say goodbye after this year, the future looks bright for Perry and the entire Central golf program.

"We'll try do our best," Brock said. "I hope they can improve on what they did a year ago and hopefully they just go out and have a good time."

St. Joseph Central's Ava Gaddie, Ali Perry off to state golf for a third straight season

TAHLEQUAH, OK - Missouri Western's worst nightmare of the last couple of weeks was recurring in the first half Saturday.

The Griffons were moving the ball and getting toward the endzone, but weren't getting in it. Missouri Western managed to punch through a couple of field goals in the first half to lead 6-0 at the break, but a new nightmare popped up in the third quarter.

Northeastern State sacked quarterback Reagan Jones for a safety midway through the third, scored a touchdown on their ensuing drive and&nbsp; then scored again early in the fourth to lead Missouri Western 16-6 with 13:48 remaining.

The Griffons suddenly awoke from the nightmares.

Missouri Western (3-4) scored 17 unanswered points on their final three drives, including the go-ahead score with 2:38 left, to survive Northeastern State 23-16 at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah, Oklahoma Saturday.

Neither team got off to an electric start offensively, but Missouri Western had three drives in the first half that got inside the NSU 30, including two drives that made it inside the five-yard-line, but the Griffons had no touchdowns in the first two quarters.

Missouri Western kicker Cody Watson made two field goals in the first half - a career-long from 43 in the first quarter, and an 18-yarder with 16 seconds left in the second. He also missed one from 25 midway through the second.

Northeastern State (1-6) got the ball to start the second half and marched 59 yards on 12 plays, but Missouri Western safety and Platte City native Kobe Cummings came up with an interception, his first of the season, in the red zone to keep the Riverhawks off the board.

But four plays later, Jones was sacked in his own endzone for a safety, making it a 6-2 ball game with 7:58 left in the third.

After the free kick, Northeastern took over at their own 32 and hit a deep shot down the field, as sophomore quarterback Ben Ward hit receiver Dashawn Williams on a 51-yard completion.

Two plays later, running back Darius Salters scored on a 14-yard run, putting Northeastern State ahead 9-6 with 6:37 left in the third.

Western drove to the Northeastern 36-yard line on the next drive, but that drive stalled after Jones got sacked for a fourth time.

The Griffons had the ball again later in the third, but got pinned deep on their own end and had to punt from their own endzone.

A 36-yard punt by Evan Williams from his own endzone, and a 12-yard return by Northeastern's Dawandrick Crockett, set the Riverhawks up at the Griffon 38.

On the third play of the fourth quarter, after Williams caught a 26-yard pass to put the Riverhawks on the MWSU 10, Northeastern scored again - this time on a 10-yard rush from Isaiah Davis. Suddenly, it's 16-6 Northeastern State with 13:48 to play.

With backup quarterback Ty Baker under center, the Griffons picked up their tempo on offense and got near the red zone, but settled for another field goal from Watson, this one from 38 yards, to make it 16-9 with 10:02 remaining.

The Riverhawks went three-and-out deep in their own territory, and Western took back over at the Northeastern 49. On the first play of that drive, Baker found Traveon James in traffic for a 36-yard completion.

Baker scored on the very next play. He ran into the endzone from 13 yards out for his first career collegiate touchdown to knot the game at 16-16 with 7:36 to play.

Baker finished with 72 all-purpose yards in place of Jones.&nbsp;

After another three-and-out by Northeastern State, the Griffons took over at their own 32 with 5:24 remaining.

A pair of personal fouls by Northeastern State defensive lineman Chris Lee, including a targeting call which led to Lee's ejection, set the Griffons up with a 1st-and-10 at the Riverhawk 28.

Then, a pop-up thunderstorm to the south of Tahlequah put the game in rain delay for roughly 75 minutes.

When the delay was over, Western didn't blink. On the first play after the pause, Brandon Hall took off on a 26-yard run to set up first-and-goal.

On third-and-goal at the two, Titus McCoy plunged in for a three-yard touchdown to give the Griffons a 23-16 lead with 2:38 remaining.

Northeastern State got a pair of first downs on their final drive and even converted a 4th-and-short. But, with about a minute left, Northeastern quarterback Grant Elerick threw a deep ball across the field that was picked off by Missouri Western's D.J. Stirgus, which sealed the deal.

The INT was just the second of Sturgis' career.

Isaac Wallace had a career-high 13 tackles to lead Western defensively. He had three tackles for loss, including a sack. Cummings had eight tackles to go with his interception.

Watson finished with a career-best three field goals made and scored 11 total points in the win.

Missouri Western stays on the road next week as they travel to face No. 7 Pittsburg State (7-0). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The game will be carried on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3) in St. Joseph.

GOWER - The first half was pretty typical Mid-Buchanan vs. East Buchanan football. Big plays on both sides, both teams counter punching, close game.

The third quarter of Friday's game, however, was a break from the usual, recent fare this rivalry has offered.

East Buchanan (7-1) scored 34 points in the third quarter, benefitting from a number of short fields and a couple of Mid-Buchanan turnovers, and the Bulldogs pulled away for a 48-12 win over the Dragons in Gower.

"Our offense really took off and that was fun to watch," East Buchanan coach Dan Ritter said. "Any time you score five touchdowns on a really good team like Mid-Buchanan in a quarter, you have to feel good about that. I don't know what else to say. It was a lot of fun to watch."

It's Mid-Buchanan's first regular season loss since September 2019, breaking a 31-game regular season win streak.

The Bulldogs, leading 14-12 at halftime, got the ball to start the second half and were sprung to life by a roughly 55-yard kickoff return by junior Trevor Klein to set East Buchanan up at their opponents' 40-yard line to open the third quarter.

Four plays later, Klein found the endzone for the first time from one yard away, putting East Buchanan up 21-12 with 10:42 to play in the third.

And again, that was really just the start.

Mid-Buchanan (7-1) punted on its first drive of the second half, but the punt traveled maybe nine yards on a shank. On the next play, from the Dragons' 12-yard line, Klein found the endzone again. 28-12.

Two plays into Mid-Buchanan's ensuing drive, quarterback Xavier Arambula's pass was intercepted by Adam Stephen-Enges. Three plays later, Klein scored again. Another one-yarder. 35-12.

A bit later, Mid-Buchanan at last caught a break, as Klein fumbled and Spencer Cunningham recovered - only for Arambula to fumble it right back on the very next play.

Klein recovered that fumble, forced by Ethan Bailey, and on the very next play, Klein took off down the middle of the field on a 41-yard touchdown run. 41-12. Still 3:43 left in the third.

After a three-and-out by Mid-Buchanan and a solid punt from Jackson Sauvage, the Bulldogs finally started on their own side of the field at the 39.

It mattered not. On a 3rd and 3, Klein took off again and scored - this time from 54 yards away. When the dust settled, it was 48-12 at the end of a wild third quarter.

Klein, limited to 43 yards on nine carries in the first half, scored all five of his touchdowns in the third quarter and piled up 206 yards on 18 total carries.

"We definitely made some changes," Klein said. "Figured out what the defense was doing and the holes kept getting bigger and bigger. Line did a great job and the receivers blocking downfield."

"Mid-Buch has had a great run. Everyone knew they were the top dog. Just feels good to be back in first place in the KCI Conference after all."

Before Klein had his scoring explosion, East Buchanan got the scoring started in the first quarter, as junior quarterback Gage Busby found a wide open Carson White for a 71-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 7:19 left in the first.

Mid-Buchanan answered the call, putting together back-to-back scoring drives in the second quarter. Arambula had passing touchdowns of 26 and 51 yards, both to senior Zach Kelly, to give the Dragons a 12-7 lead with 4:16 to play in the second.

As impressive as the third quarter was for East Buchanan, the Bulldogs pieced together a 12-play, 80-yard drive just before halftime. That drive ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Aidan Hensley, putting the Bulldogs up 14-12 at the break.

Busby was 7-of-11 through the air for East Buchanan for 152 yards. Arambula was 6-of-10 for 111 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Arambula also rushed for 63 yards on 27 carries.

East Buchanan looks to finish strong at Lawson next Friday. Mid-Buchanan is home to Plattsburg next week.

It hasn't all been settled just yet, but Friday's win was a big step for East Buchanan if they hope to get the No. 1 seed in Class 1 District 8. They've already clinched at least a share of the KCI Crown.

"If we lose to them, that's a three-way tie in the conference," Ritter said. "We have to get ourselves ready to go and ready for a really good Lawson team that can run and pass."

East Buchanan scores 34 third quarter points, pulls away from Mid-Buchanan Friday 

Bruce Sutter, a Hall of Fame reliever and the 1979 Cy Young winner, has died. He was 69.

Sutter
 was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, 
surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The 
Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in 
Cartersville, Georgia.

“All our father ever wanted to be 
remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than 
that,” the Sutter family said in a statement Friday. “He was also a 
great husband to our mother for 50 (years), he was a great father and 
grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game
 of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his 
family.”

Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a
 split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major 
leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his 
career.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “deeply saddened" by the news.

“Bruce
 was the first pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame without starting a 
game, and he was one of the key figures who foreshadowed how the use of 
relievers would evolve,” Manfred said in a statement. “Bruce will be 
remembered as one of the best pitchers in the histories of two of our 
most historic franchises.”

Sutter debuted with the Chicago Cubs in
 1976. The reliever won the Cy Young in 1979 in a season where he had 37
 saves, 2.22 ERA and 110 strikeouts.

He joined the St. Louis 
Cardinals and played with them from 1981 to 1984. There, he won a World 
Series in 1982, ending Game 7 against the Brewers with a strikeout.

“Being
 a St Louis Cardinal was an honor he cherished deeply,” the Sutter 
family's statement said. “To the Cardinals, his teammates and most 
importantly to the greatest fans in all of sports, we thank you for all 
of the love and support over the years.”

His last save, No. 300, came with the Atlanta Braves in 1988. Sutter was <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/sutter-bruce">inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006</a>.

“Bruce
 was a fan-favorite during his years in St. Louis and in the years to 
follow, and he will always be remembered for his 1982 World Series 
clinching save and signature split-fingered pitch," Cardinals owner and 
CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. "He was a true pioneer in the 
game, changing the role of the late inning reliever.”

Sutter was 
born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in January 1953. The Baseball Hall of 
Fame said in a release that he learned the split-finger fastball from a 
Cubs minor-league pitching instructor while recovering from surgery on 
his right elbow.

The Cardinals said Sutter is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter-in-law and six grandkids.

“I
 feel like a brother passed away,” Hall of Famer Jim Kaat said. “I knew 
Bruce deeper than just about any other teammate. We spent a lot of time 
together, and as happens when your careers end, you go your separate 
ways. But we stayed in touch and considered each other great friends."

In the third at-bat of the game Thursday, Savannah's Kiara Schaub hit a single shot home run to center to give her team an early 1-0 advantage.

"That was huge," Schaub said. "I mean, momentum is everything in this game. If you can get that in the first couple of innings and ride that for the rest of the game, you've got such a greater shot at winning."

The Savages (19-7) never trailed and scored three runs over the game's final two innings to get some key insurance and hold off Benton 6-4 in a Class 3 District 8 semifinal at Heritage Park in St. Joseph Thursday.

"That's two really competitive, two really similar teams," Savannah coach B.J. Winn said. "If we played them 10 times, it might go 5-5. This game, goofy stuff happens, you get a little lucky, you put the ball in play and you can scratch out a win. It was a good game."

Benton (19-8) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but Savannah struck back in the top of the fourth. An RBI single by senior Grace Heitman, plus a Benton throwing error, allowed two runs to come across and the Savages led 3-1 by the middle of the fourth.

Benton got a run back in the bottom of the fourth and then tied it up 3-3 in the fifth. The Cardinals had bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with nobody out.

Savannah made a pitching change in the fifth after Benton led off with a pair of singles. Emma Newton was relieved by freshman Brailynn Fox. After walking in the tying run, Fox struck out two in a row and then got a fly out to end the fifth and keep the tie intact.

It was a good game."Benton (19-8) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but Savannah struck back in the top of the fourth. An RBI single by senior Grace Heitman, plus a Benton throwing error, allowed two runs to come across and the Savages led 3-1 by the middle of the fourth.Benton got a run back in the bottom of the fourth and then tied it up 3-3 in the fifth. The Cardinals had bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth with nobody out.Savannah made a pitching change in the fifth after Benton led off with a pair of singles. Emma Newton was relieved by freshman Brailynn Fox. After walking in the tying run, Fox struck out two in a row and then got a fly out to end the fifth and keep the tie intact.Savannah took the lead back for good in the top of the sixth. A two-out, RBI triple by senior Grace Heitman, thought initially to be a home run, bounced off the fence and back into play.Freshman Addi Koehler followed that up with an RBI single to right and Savannah led 5-3 headed to the bottom of the sixth.Benton kept battling, as a pair of dropped fly balls to deep left field allowed one run to score, making it 5-4 entering the seventh.With two outs and runners on first and second, senior Haley Noland hit a crucial RBI single to right to score sophomore Reagan Bauer to give the Savages a 6-4 lead.Noland finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI."Playing as a team is what we've been doing," Noland said. "If we keep it up, it'll be good. I'm proud of all of us together."Benton was set down in order in the bottom of the seventh, and Fox earned the save, pitching the last three innings."That's a big stage for a freshman to be in," Winn said. "She came in dealing, changing speeds. Her ball was moving and it was a little rocky to start. My blood pressure started going up, but she settled in, struck out the next three and it was off to the races."Five different Savages scored a run Thursday and seven of them got a hit. Bauer scored a team-high two runs. Heitman had two hits and two RBIs.Junior Ashlyn Snodgrass went 2-for-3 to lead Benton at the plate. She had a triple and a run scored as well.Senior Wynter Hurst pitched the full game to round out her varsity career, striking out four batters and walking three."Wynter is tough," Winn said. "She is a darn good pitcher. We had some good at-bats. We put it in play, kept on battling and if you put the ball in play, good things happen."This sets the stage for a Savannah vs. Chillicothe district title game on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Savannah beat Richmond in the first semifinal Thursday 9-3.The Savages beat the Hornets in Savannah 5-2 on September 15.&nbsp; Savannah is playing in its fourth straight district title game, while Chillicothe is trying to get back to the state championship after finishing as state runners-up in Class 3 last season."We'll just stay solid," Schaub said. "We've already beat them once, so we got that, too. We're rolling."A high-profile district title against two talented MEC rivals. One can't ask for much more than that."They're good," Winn said. "We're going to have to play defense, hit our spots pitching and have some good at-bats."<figure>
