ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — No matter the setting — Arrowhead Stadium or Orchard Park — Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs keep finding ways to beat Josh Allen and Buffalo Bills in the playoffs.

Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce and the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs advanced to their sixth straight AFC championship game with a 27-24 win over the Bills on Sunday night.

The Chiefs move on to Baltimore to face Lamar Jackson and the conference’s top-seeded Ravens, who beat Houston 34-10 on Saturday.

Kansas City is 0-1 in the playoffs against the Ravens, following a 30-7 loss in the 2010 wild-card round. Baltimore defeated Kansas City 36-35 in their most recent regular-season matchup in Week 2 of the 2021 season.

“There’s no weakness there,” Mahomes said of the Ravens. “It’s going to take our best effort. Defense, offense, special teams, they do it all. It’s always a great challenge and that stadium’s going to be rocking, so we’re excited for the challenge.”

Mahomes passed his first test by winning his first true road playoff game — not including Super Bowl neutral sites — and improving his postseason record to 13-3.

“First of all, this is a great environment, man,” Mahomes said of Buffalo. “It really is. We did hear it all week, man, about playing a road game, and we’re here to prove a point and show that we can play anywhere.”

The Chiefs are accustomed to ending the Bills' season, having done it now in three of the past four playoffs, with the first two wins coming at home in the 2020 AFC championship game and the 2021 divisional round.

“All-time classic again. Any time we play Sean’s teams, it comes right down to the end,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, referring to Bills coach Sean McDermott.

The Chiefs scored on five of their first six possessions, not including a kneeldown at halftime, and went ahead for good on Isiah Pacheco's 4-yard touchdown run 40 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Neither team led by more than seven points and they traded leads five times. The outcome was decided when Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass missed a potential game-tying field goal wide right from 44 yards, allowing the Chiefs to run out the remaining 1:47.

“Ultimately, completely on me,” said Bass, who had a field goal blocked and missed from 27 yards in a playoff-opening 31-17 win over Pittsburgh last week. “I feel terrible. I love this team, man. It hurts. This one hurts bad.”

Allen blamed himself for having Buffalo’s final drive stall at the Chiefs 26 following two incompletions — the last a throwaway after he was flushed out of the pocket.

“I wish he wouldn’t have been put in that situation. You win as a team you lose as a team. One play doesn’t define a game, doesn’t define a season,” Allen said. “Losing sucks. Losing to them, losing to anybody.”

The Bills keep finding different ways to lose to the Chiefs. After being blown out 38-24 at Kansas City in the 2020 season AFC championship game, Buffalo came up short in a 42-36 overtime loss in the divisional round a year later.

The game has since been dubbed “13 Seconds” because that’s how much time was left for Mahomes to march the Chiefs 44 yards on two plays to set up Harrison Butker’s 49-yard field goal. Mahomes then clinched the win with a 9-yard touchdown pass to — who else? — Kelce.

The tight end didn’t stick around to address reporters after this win, as he was perhaps busy rushing out to visit with girlfriend, pop music superstar Taylor Swift, and his brother Jason, who celebrated watching his two-TD outing from a suite.

Travis Kelce celebrated his first touchdown catch — a 22-yarder — by making a heart gesture with his hands and directed toward Swift’s suite at the opposite end of the field. And Jason Kelce celebrated the touchdown shirtless while holding a can of beer.

Mahomes was 17 of 23 for 215 yards, and the two TD passes to Kelce were the 15th and 16th times they’ve combined for scores in the playoffs. They have one more than Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski for the NFL record for most playoff TDs for a quarterback-receiver combination.

“It speaks to Travis and his work, to be able to go out there and make plays in big games,” Mahomes said. “Passing anything that has Brady and Gronk in it is special. Because those are two of the greatest players.”

Allen went 26 of 39 for 186 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for two scores. His team-leading 72 yards rushing increased his career playoff total to 563, the second most among NFL quarterbacks in league history and trailing only Steve Young (594).

It was another disappointing finish for a Bills team that won its fourth consecutive AFC East title, and was on a six-game roll since a 20-17 win at Kansas City on Dec. 10.

“Just lost in the playoffs to a team that’s kicked us out,” safety Jordan Poyer said. “It’s tough. You work so hard throughout the season to fight and claw back, our backs against the wall, everybody doubting us midway through the season and we get here and just that close.”

Kelce scores twice and Chiefs beat Bills 27-24 to advance to face Ravens in AFC championship

Missouri Western forced 30 turnovers and the Griffon women's basketball team dominated in a 73-49 win over Central Oklahoma on Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Missouri Western (13-4, 8-3 MIAA) outscored UCO 22-8 in the second quarter and led 37-14 by halftime.

Central Oklahoma (4-14, 3-9 MIAA), trailing 56-25 at the start of the fourth, made a late push and got back to within 17 points, but Missouri Western drained five three-pointers in the fourth to put the game on ice.

Brionna Budgets dropped a season-high 21 points on a 5-of-15 effort from beyond the arc. Connie Clarke was outstanding with 17 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, seven steals and two blocks. Mary Fultz had 12 points and five rebounds.

Tiani Ellison came off the bench for 10 points and six rebounds.

Missouri Western's defense was particularly potent, as the Griffons forced 30 turnovers and scored 40 points off of those. Missouri nabbed 16 steals and held UCO to 34 percent shooting.

The Missouri Western women are now 8-1 at home and have won eight of their last nine games.

The Griffons remain tied with Central Missouri and Fort Hays State for second place in the MIAA with an 8-3 league record.

Griffon men block go-ahead shot from Jaden Wells, fend off Bronchos

Missouri Western used an 11-0 second half run to grab a late lead and the Griffons blocked a go-ahead shot from Central Oklahoma's Jaden Wells to eek out a 57-56 win over the Bronchos at the MWSU Fieldhouse Saturday.

UCO (14-6, 6-6 MIAA) led 48-42 with 9:31 to play, but would not score again until there was 2:47 remaining.

Missouri Western (14-3, 8-3 MIAA) led 57-52 with 51 seconds left after a huge jumper by Zion Swader, but the Bronchos got back to within one points after a couple of layups by Wells.

Missouri Western was put on the line for a one-and-one with six seconds left, but Taye Fields missed the first free throw and Wells rebounded.

Wells went up the floor himself and tried for a step-back bunny at the buzzer, but he was blocked by Fields.

Wells led UCO with a game-high 24 points. JaRon Thames led Missouri Western with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Swader had another strong showing with 13 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Justin Bubak came off the bench with six points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Griffons outrebounded UCO 41-30 and held the Bronchos to 36.4 percent shooting (20-of-55). Missouri Western also benefitted from eight missed free throws by UCO (12-of-20).

The game featured 10 lead changes and five ties. UCO held a lead for 15 minutes, while MWSU led for a little more than 20.

Missouri Western's win streak is now six games, as they get their first win over UCO in St. Joseph since 2016. At 8-3 in the league, the Griffons are just a half-game out of first place in the MIAA.

Missouri Western is on the road to face Lincoln University in Jefferson City Wednesday. The women's game starts at 5:30, the men's at 7:30. Both games are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3).

MWSU women's basketball dominates UCO, Griffon men hold on against Bronchos

The St. Joe Bucks are starting preparations for their upcoming 2024 season. The Bucks are holding player tryouts this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hitmen Indoor Sports Complex in St. Joseph.

The Bucks, members of the Midwest Regional Football League, are gearing up for their third season of competition this spring. They fell short in the championship game in 2022, but ran the table in 2023.

"We have a lot of area athletes here and our purpose is to give back to the St. Joseph community as much as we can," said Bucks head coach David Hershberger - a King City native and Missouri Western alum. He founded the Bucks in 2020 with his wife, Makayla.

"Not only do we have fun playing football and fueling our needs there, but the guys do a good job of giving back in the community and finding events they can help out with. Cleaning up the streets and stuff like that."

Player tryouts are open for anyone, ages 18 and up. There's a $35 fee to try out, but any player who makes the team gets the money back. The Bucks are also holding cheerleader and mascot tryouts Saturday as well.

Hershberger encourages any player who wants to try out Saturday to get to the Hitmen Indoor Sports Complex by noon to get registered.

The Bucks will play about 9-10 regular season games, using the St. Joseph School District's high school fields for home contests. Their first game is Saturday, March 30 at Warrensburg.

The Midwest Regional Football League features eight teams in all, including teams in Maryville (Bearcats) and three in the Kansas City metro.

The St. Joe Bucks aren't the only semi-pro team in the city. T<a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/7076b69b-40c0-4238-9e10-4ca8232b5ffa">he St. Joseph Swarm played their second season</a> in the spring and summer of 2023, and they're members of the Heartland Football Association.

Semi-pro football team, St. Joe Bucks, holding player tryouts Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jackson County Executive Frank White vetoed an ordinance Thursday that would have put a 3/8th-cent sales tax renewal on the April ballot to fund sports stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.

“This proposed sales tax would generate over $2 billion from our residents, yet there is no clear understanding or assurance regarding the teams’ commitments and contributions to the county,” White said in a news release, the Kansas City Star reported. “It’s not a good deal for taxpayers and I cannot support an agreement that is not in their best interest.”

Shortly after the veto announcement, four county legislators said they sided with White. In order to override White's veto, the County Legislature — which has nine members — would need six votes. They are approaching a Jan. 23 deadline to put the stadium tax decision in front of voters this spring.

The Royals and Chiefs released a joint statement after White's veto that said, “We respect the County Executive’s veto authority. We will continue working with the legislators to ensure that this ordinance is on the ballot on April 2 so that Jackson County voters have the opportunity to decide on the extension of the current 3/8th-cent sales tax.”

The Royals are seeking to use the sales tax to help fund building a new downtown ballpark, though they have not yet announced their location. The Chiefs have consistently stated their intentions to renovate Arrowhead Stadium.

The current stadium leases at the Truman Sports Complex expire in 2031. (AP) — Jackson County Executive Frank White vetoed an ordinance Thursday that would have put a 3/8th-cent sales tax renewal on the April ballot to fund sports stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.“This proposed sales tax would generate over $2 billion from our residents, yet there is no clear understanding or assurance regarding the teams’ commitments and contributions to the county,” White said in a news release, the Kansas City Star reported. “It’s not a good deal for taxpayers and I cannot support an agreement that is not in their best interest.”Shortly after the veto announcement, four county legislators said they sided with White. In order to override White's veto, the County Legislature — which has nine members — would need six votes. They are approaching a Jan. 23 deadline to put the stadium tax decision in front of voters this spring.The Royals and Chiefs released a joint statement after White's veto that said, “We respect the County Executive’s veto authority. We will continue working with the legislators to ensure that this ordinance is on the ballot on April 2 so that Jackson County voters have the opportunity to decide on the extension of the current 3/8th-cent sales tax.”The Royals are seeking to use the sales tax to help fund building a new downtown ballpark, though they have not yet announced their location. A county official vetoes a stadium tax for an April ballot, affecting Kansas City Chiefs and Royals

Missouri Western women's basketball set the tone from the beginning, going up 28-4 by the end of the first quarter and rolling to a 108-45 win over Newman on Thursday night at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

The Griffons' onslaught continued, as Missouri Western was up 58-17 by halftime.

Missouri Western (12-4, 7-3 MIAA) shot 54.9% from the field, including an excellent 14-of-26 from three. Brionna Budgets and Kassandra Caron led the Griffons with 16 points each.

Jayme Jackson scored 14, while Connie Clarke and Tiani Ellison chipped in 10. Alyssa Bonilla, who got the start, scored six points to go with seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

Missouri Western dominated every major statistical category, outrebounding Newman (2-15, 1-10 MIAA) 54-23. The Griffons had 26 assists, scored 53 bench points and cashed in 35 points off of 22 Newman turnovers.

Newman was held to 30.2 percent shooting and suffered their largest margin of defeat so far this season.

The Missouri Western women, meanwhile, set a new record for most points ever scored against an MIAA opponent.

The Griffons have now won seven of their last eight games and sit just one game out of first place in the MIAA standings.

Griffon men light it up from three, thrash Newman Thursday

No. 25 Missouri Western built a 22-point lead by halftime and shot north of 60 percent from long range in a 97-58 win over Newman (6-10, 3-8 MIAA) at the MWSU Fieldhouse on Thursday.

A 16-3 run in the first half put Missouri Western (13-3, 7-3 MIAA) ahead 22-8 with 9:57 left before halftime.

The Griffons never looked back after that, outscoring Newman 53-36 over the final 20 minutes.

Missouri Western shot 60 percent (36-of-60) from the field Thursday, including a blistering 14-of-23 from three. Julius Dixon led four Griffons in double figures with 22 points. He alone was 6-of-8 from three.

JaRon Thames scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Zion Swader was nearly flawless, scoring 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. He had seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and no turnovers.

Reese Glover came off the bench to score 11 points to go with four steals.

 The Griffons had 27 assists to just 12 turnovers, as Missouri Western has now won five straight games - the longest active winning streak in the MIAA.

Missouri Western scored 31 points off of 17 Newman turnovers, helping the Griffons put up a season-high scoring effort.

The Missouri Western men are now tied for second place in the MIAA standings - in a three-way tie with Washburn and Fort Hays State.

Both Missouri Western teams are home to face Central Oklahoma on Saturday. The women's game tips off at 1:30 p.m., and the men's follows at 3:30. Both games are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3, 680kfeq.com, KFEQ app).

The UCO women beat Northwest Missouri State Thursday, 71-57. The 24th -ranked Northwest men beat UCO, 71-56.

MWSU men's, women's basketball dominate Newman Thursday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It was so cold that Patrick Mahomes' helmet shattered on a hit. Andy Reid's mustache froze on the sideline. Fans and players alike huddled for warmth, trying their best to grit their way through the fourth-coldest game in NFL history.

The Kansas City Chiefs managed to handle the adversity well.

Handled the Miami Dolphins quite well, too.

Mahomes threw for 262 yards, found Rashee Rice eight times for 130 yards and a touchdown, and made several daring runs for key first downs. Isiah Pacheco pounded over the frozen turf for 89 yards and another score. And the Chiefs shut down a prolific Miami offense in a 26-9 victory in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday night.

Harrison Butker added four field goals for the reigning Super Bowl champs, who appear to be warming up for another run.

“Guys came with that attitude, that mentality — we knew it was going to be cold,” Mahomes said. “All week we were preaching, ‘Let’s come in there with that fire and just get after it and see what happens.’”

Meanwhile, the injury-depleted Dolphins (11-7) looked nothing like the dynamic offense that led the league in yards. Tua Tagovailoa was pressured relentlessly by the NFL's second-ranked defense, wide receiver Tyreek Hill had a 53-yard TD catch but was otherwise shut down in his return to Kansas City, and the Dolphins finished with 264 yards in all.

They have not won at Arrowhead Stadium since Nov. 6, 2011, nor won a playoff game since Dec. 30, 2000.

“All the weather,” Reid said, “it's a little bit different than down in Miami.”

The Chiefs won their 15th consecutive home playoff game, not counting a trio of Super Bowls that netted them two Lombardi Trophies. But they will head to Buffalo next week if the Bills beat the Steelers on Monday in a game pushed back a day by a blizzard. Otherwise, the Chiefs will host Houston, which beat the Browns earlier Saturday.

It was minus-4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius) at kickoff, easily setting a record for the coldest game at Arrowhead Stadium. But it was wind gusts, whipping through at more than 25 mph and driving the wind chill to a bone-rattling minus-27 degrees, that made the weather truly miserable for just about everyone.

That included pop star Taylor Swift, who once again turned up to see her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

She at least got to watch from an enclosed suite. Most fans huddled outside in parkas, ski goggles and snow pants, and players huddled around heaters on the sidelines as if they were an oasis in the cold. The National Weather Service issued a warning for what it called “dangerously cold” weather that had blanketed the Midwest.

In fact, the cold may have made Mahomes’ helmet brittle enough that a hit in the third quarter knocked a chunk of the plastic shell from it. Once officials saw the fist-sized hole, they made Mahomes get a backup helmet from the bench.

“We have to talk about where we store the backup,” Mahomes said. “It was like, frozen.”

The weather didn’t seem to bother Hill, who was playing in Kansas City for the first time since his old team traded him to Miami two years ago. The league’s leading receiver warmed up in a short-sleeved shirt, then proceeded to scorch the stout Chiefs defense and All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie for a his long touchdown reception midway through the first half.

But the Dolphins’ offense otherwise struggled, just as it did in a 21-14 loss to the Chiefs in their November game in Germany.

Kansas City was far more efficient, scoring on four of its six first-half drives. Mahomes capped the first with a TD toss to Rice, and while ensuing drives kept fizzling in the red zone, Butker added a trio of field goals to give Kansas City a 16-3 lead.

“That was like kicking a block of ice,” Reid said.

The Chiefs added another field goal in the third quarter, but it was still a two-possession game early in the fourth when the Dolphins appeared to force another field goal. But a late flag on Christian Wilkins for roughing the passer on third down gave Kansas City a fresh set of downs, and Pacheco plowed into the end zone moments later to give the Chiefs a 26-7 lead.

The Dolphins finally put together a sustained drive afterward, but by that point it was much too late. And when they failed to convert on fourth down, they were headed to their 11th straight loss when the game-time temp is 40 degrees or less

Chiefs top Dolphins 26-7 in fourth-coldest game in NFL history at minus-4 degrees

The Missouri Western women's basketball team jumped on Northwest Missouri State from the get-go, leading 20-10 after one quarter.

The Griffons (11-4, 6-3 MIAA) never trailed, leading by as many as 16 points, and rolling to a 61-47 win over the Bearcats on Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Missouri Western held Northwest's offense in check all game, as the Bearcats were only 16-of-58 from the field, including 4-of-20 from three.

The Griffons, winners in six of their last seven games, shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) Saturday, and forced 23 turnovers on the defensive end.

Missouri Western scored 29 points off of those giveaways.

Tiani Ellison led the Griffons with a career-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Connie Clarke had her second double-double of the season, logging 16 points and 10 rebounds. Clarke also had three steals, three blocks and two assists.

Jayme Jackson finished with 13 points, three boards, three assists and two steals.

Caely Kesten did the heavy lifting for Northwest, scoring 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

Missouri Western has now won the last four meetings against Northwest and eight of the last 11 against the Bearcats.

MWSU men, at long last, get one against Northwest Missouri State

Not much more needs to be said than that. Missouri Western (12-3, 6-3 MIAA), after losing their last 24 matchups against Northwest Missouri State, finally got one on the Bearcats, beating the No. 14 team in the country, 76-70, at the MWSU Fieldhouse Saturday.

Missouri Western, now on a four-game winning streak, jumped out a 16-5 start in the first 6.5 minutes and they never trailed in the game.

The Griffons led by seven points at halftime and led 60-46 with 6:17 to go.

Northwest (11-4, 7-2 MIAA) didn't go quietly, as the Bearcats got to within 68-64 with 1:21 to play.

Missouri Western was solid at the free throw line throughout, however, making 27-of-33 at the stripe, including 15-of-17 in the second half.

Northwest, the No. 1 free throw shooting team in the MIAA, missed 11 at the foul line, going 26-of-37.

JaRon Thames led four Griffons in double figures with 16 points, including a 10-of-11 effort at the foul line. Thames also led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

Julius Dixon dropped 14 points. Taye Fields added 12 points, while Zion Swader finished with 10.

Swader and Fields, who both finished with four fouls, were somewhat limited in minutes early, as they both picked up two first half fouls.

Kiani Saxon is also to be credited, as he scored nine points to go with four blocks, two steals and two assists.

Missouri Western shot a solid 46.8 percent (22-of-47) on the day.

Wes Dreamer led Northwest with 24 points and eight boards. Bennett Stirtz had 13, Jack Ratigan scored 12 off the bench, while Isaiah Jackson added 12 points to go with five boards and five assists.

It's Missouri Western's first win over Northwest in men's basketball since Jan. 12, 2013 - 4,018 days ago. The teams will meet again in Maryville on February 24.

Both Griffon teams stay home this Thursday to host Newman. The women's game is at 5:30, the men's at 7:30. Both are on KFEQ Radio (680, 95.3, 680kfeq.com, KFEQ app).

MWSU WBB dominate Bearcats, Griffon men break long streak against Northwest

Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western are set to do battle on the basketball court again this Saturday in a couple of high stakes MIAA contests.

All four teams, men's and women's, have double digit wins and palpable momentum early in 2024.

On the women’s side, Northwest sits at 12-2 overall - their best start since 2010-11. Their 6-2 conference record has the Bearcats tied for first in the MIAA standings.

Northwest has won four straight, coming off last Saturday's 63-42 win at Rogers State. Northwest head coach Austin Meyer says his team has found a way to win led by a core of experienced players.

"Just experience and the kids playing together for multiple years," Meyer told KFEQ Radio. "We try to get a little bit better each day and I feel like our kids buy into that. We're in a good spot right now, but they don't give you midyear awards. So, we've got a long road ahead."

One of Northwest’s returners this season is St. Joseph native and sophomore Ella Moody. Moody started 12 games as a freshman last season, and has scored 37 points to go with 18 rebounds for the Bearcats this season in 11 appearances.

A St. Joseph Central graduate, Moody cherishes the opportunity to play in her home city once again.

"I like playing at home," Moody said, "because everyone gets to come. All of my friends and family get to come and watch. Missouri Western is a really great team and it'll be a really competitive game. It'll be close, which is a great game to watch. I'm excited to have everyone there and have the support."

The Bearcat women have found themselves in a lot of close games in recent years. Last season, Northwest went 15-15 - eight of those losses were by 10 points or fewer.

Seven of Northwest's 12 victories so far this season have come in games decided by 10 points or less.

"We've had a lot of close games we've been on the losing end of," Meyer said, "and we've been able to win a lot of close games this year."

One of the biggest keys in this turnaround for Northwest is continuity. The Bearcats had 13 freshmen at the start of the 2021-22 season. Eleven true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen.

Of those 13 players in that class, 11 of them are still on the team. Six of them are fourth-year players. Three of them are in their fifth season.

Experience and a more up-tempo offense, Meyer says, have both been key. Helping to lead this offensive upswing is first-year assistant coach Chris Guess, who had spent the last 32 years as a decorated high school coach in Iowa.

"We're playing a little faster," he said. "We've played pretty slow in the past. It wasn't that we didn't say, 'Push the ball.' We had to limit possessions. We had to slow the game down. Whereas, we're playing at a faster rate. More possessions. I think our kids play more freely and play with more confidence, and I think that's been a big part of it."

The Missouri Western women's basketball team, meanwhile, is looking to get things back on track. The Griffon women are 10-4, coming off of a 74-58 loss at Northeastern State, which snapped a five-game winning streak.

 Missouri Western coach Candi Whitaker says it's up to her senior leaders to determine what kind of season they want to have as they enter the back half of the 2023-24 slate.

"It's their career, their season," Whitaker said. "We're going to stay consistent in our expectations and continue to coach effort and discipline every single day, which is where we're at."

At 5-3 in the MIAA, Missouri Western is only a game out of first place.

The Missouri Western women have won three straight against the Bearcats and seven of the last 10 overall.

Northwest, MWSU men match up with identical records Saturday

The Northwest Missouri State men are ranked No. 14 in the coaches' poll this week, sitting at 11-3 overall and on a six-game winning streak. Their 7-1 record in the MIAA is good for first place in the league.

They rank second in the league in scoring defense, allowing only 60.6 points per game. They also shoot at 50.1% clip from the field - good for second in the league as well.

Northwest head coach Ben McCollum says he's been impressed by Missouri Western - a team that's also 11-3 and winners of three straight.

The Griffons are second in the league, averaging 37.4 rebounds per game while putting up a strong 77.9 points per contest.

"I think Western is one of the better teams in the league," McCollum said. "They score at a high rate. Defensively, they're able to guard you and rebound. They do everything well. Just like any team in the MIAA, it's going to be one of those games. They'll be excited to play. We'll be excited to play. We try to always be."

Northwest has won each of the last 24 meetings against the MWSU men, including the last 10 in St. Joseph. Griffons’ head coach Will Martin admits the Griffons have to start pulling their weight in this rivalry.

"We have to do our part in the rivalry and start winning some of those matchups," Martin said. "But, I know our community will get out. I know Looney will be lit. We're going to need every ounce of their energy and support in that game."

Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western are travel partners. That means they share the same conference opponents every week in the regular season. So, the Bearcats and Griffons, by default, see each other a lot on film.

Martin says he and McCollum are, by now, very familiar with what the other team does and is capable of.

"We probably watch each other, me and Ben, more than any other team," Martin said. "You're watching a lot of their games to prep. We feel like we know them pretty well. They know us. They're a really good team. Well coached. What Ben McCollum has done there speaks for itself."

Tip-off in Saturday's men's game is set for 3:30 p.m. The women lead things off at 1:30.

MWSU, Northwest set for high stakes MIAA basketball Saturday in St. Joseph

Benton overcame an early 7-3 deficit, reeling off a 14-2 first half run and fending off Barstow in a 57-49 win in the Cardinal Classic semifinals at Benton High School Thursday.

The Cardinals (9-5) led 28-21 at halftime and led by 10 on a couple of different occasions in the second half.

The first quarter saw five lead changes, but Benton never trailed in the final three periods.

"That's a big win for us," Benton coach Jared Boone said. "Barstow is a very good team. They've beaten a lot of good teams, and we knew that's a team we could possibly see down the road in the future. The boys had good focus going into the game."

Senior Carson Schmidt led all scorers with 17 points. Sophomore Lincoln Goodwin had 15. Senior Zach Smith finished with nine.

Aidan Lawlor led three Barstow Knights in double figures with 14 points. Benton stopped what was a four-game winning streak for Barstow (8-4).

 Meanwhile, the Cardinals have now won four in a row and five of their last six games.

"We try not to look too far ahead," Boone said. "We take it day-by-day. This week has been tough with the weather and having to move things around. The boys hung in there. They handled adversity and they adjusted to the situation. I'm very proud of our effort tonight."

East Buchanan pulls off late run, fends off Central in thrilling game

In a rare, but local out-of-class matchup, East Buchanan hung with Class 6 St. Joseph Central all night Thursday and the Bulldogs, down 50-47 in the closing minutes, ended the game on an 11-2 run to knock off the Indians 58-52 at Benton High School Thursday.

The game was tight from the get-go and featured 11 ties and nine lead changes in all. East Buchanan (8-2) trailed 24-22 at halftime, but led 38-35 entering the fourth.

Clark Scott led the Bulldogs with 13 points. It was Scott who had a crucial 'and one' to put East Buchanan ahead 52-50 with just under three minutes remaining.

"We don't get the chance to play a Class 6 or a Class 5," East Buchanan coach Michael Carpenter said. "That's why we got in this tournament. To get to play a team like (Central) and come out on the other side with a W is pretty big for these guys."

Junior Dylan Davidson scored six of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Isaiah Watkins also finished with 11 points. Senior Gage Busby had 10.

Central (6-10), who was without senior starter Brock Williamson, was led in scoring by senior Shadai Ndamboma, who finished with 17 points. Amonttay Henderson had 12. Kanon Wetlaufer added eight.

East Buchanan, whose only losses this year are to an unbeaten Maysville team (10-0) and a ranked Plattsburg (12-2) squad in overtime, picked up a signature win against a Class 6 foe on a neutral site.

Now, the Bulldogs will have a chance to win the Cardinal Classic, as they face the host school, Benton, for the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"(Benton) is a very, very good team," Carpenter noted. "They're deep. They do a lot of things well. They do a lot of little things really, really well. That's something we'll have to clean up to have a chance in that game. To come here and play them in their building and their tournament, that's a fun opportunity."

"It'll be a fun opportunity. Hopefully our kids embrace that we're there. Whatever happens, we go all out and let the cards fall where they may."
