Dillon Dingler had a tiebreaking double in the bottom of the eighth, one inning after a three run home run from James Outman, and the surging Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 at Comerica Park.
Isaac Collins broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, scoring Michael Massey, and Randy Dobnak threw five scoreless innings for the Royals, continuing his good streak with the club since being acuired from the Seattle Mariners. Matt Strahm threw the scoreless sixth inning before being relieved in the seventh inning by John Schreiber.
Schreiber was an out away from getting out of the seventh with the two-run lead, but Outman hit a 2-2 fastball just over the fence in right field, bringing home Dingler and Kerry Carpenter, to make it 3-2. In the eighth inning, Josh Rojas pulled the Royals into a tie with an RBI single, driving in Tyler Tolber, but in the bottom half Dingler hit his RBI double off Steven Cruz, who fell to 2-3 with the loss, scoring Hao-Yu Lee for the 4-3 lead by Detroit.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro was not with the team due to a personal matter. The Royals expect Quatraro back soon. At the plate, Massey was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Rojas was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Vinnie Pasquantino was 2-for-4 with a walk.
Detroit Tigers starter Tarik Skubal could be making his last with the team. Before the game, Skubal said his preference is to finish the season with the Tigers and compete for a championship. As Kansas City and Detroit continue the series tomorrow, Skubal (6-5, 2.83 ERA, 98K's) is set to start for the Tigers while the Royals will use an opener in the form of Beck Way (1-0, 3.22 ERA, 21K's) before going to Noah Cameron.
