For the first time since 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs will not hold their annual training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

All 32 NFL teams were told by Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday to hold training camps at their home facilities this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chiefs were one of ten teams last year to hold their training camp away from their own facility and have been at MWSU for ten straight years.  In February, Kansas City announced a three-year deal with Missouri Western to continue training in St. Joe and enhance facilities on campus.

The Chiefs have not made an announcement at this time, but Missouri Western did release a statement on Tuesday, "The University has been in active discussions with the Chiefs in planning for training camp to return to MWSU this summer.  We're awaiting confirmation of any NFL policy."

Mosaic Lifecare is the official sponsor of camp and they also released a statement on Tuesday, "No official confirmation that the Chiefs are not coming this summer."

It was a record-breaking training camp in 2019 as more fans attended the camp than any training camp in history.  More than 62,000 fans turned out during the three-week training camp, shattering the old record of 55,000 set in 2010.

The 2019 total is nearly double the number of fans (33,000) who showed up to watch training camp in 2018 and and 2020 was expected to surpass last year after the Chiefs Super Bowl victory in February.

In addition, NFL teams will not be allowed to hold joint training camp practices with other teams, according to the memo sent to NFL teams.

"We believe that each of these steps will enhance our ability to protect the health and safety of players and your football staffs and are consistent with a sound approach to risk management in the current environment," Goodell said in the memo.

"The NFLPA was strongly in favor of these two decisions, which were made to limit exposure risks by avoiding the need for clubs to clean and maintain two facilities, by limiting the need for players and club staffs to travel to another location (sometimes located at a considerable distance from the home facility, and by limiting travel and contact between players on different clubs in the context of joint practices," Goodell added. "These steps are being taken for the 2020 preseason to address the current conditions and are not expected to be in place in 2021."

Zars played in all 12 games as a redshirt sophomore last fall as he play all of the offensive line positions except for center.  The Mill Valley High School graduate will likely be one of five new starters on the O-Line for the Griffons in 2020.  MWSU lost all five of their starters to graduation and that is certainly the position group with have a spotlight on them this fall.

Missouri Western still doesn't know when they will kick off the 2020 football season as the NCAA has said each Division II school can only play 10 games this year.  A new schedule is suppose to be released this month and the season should start the second week in September.

MIAA office shares message on inequality and injustice

Due
to the on-going developments related to COVID-19 the Big 12 Conference
previously announced that all team activities whether required or voluntary, including
team and individual practices, meetings, and other organized gatherings, were
suspended until May 31 and would be re-evaluated at that time. In addition, all
conference and non- conference competitions were cancelled through the end of
the academic year, including spring sports that compete beyond the academic
year. After re-evaluation, the following Big 12 Student-Athlete policies become
effective June 1.

Each
institution should use its discretion to make the best decision for its
student-athletes when determining when student-athletes return to campus prior to
the first permissible date to begin voluntary activity.

University of Missouri men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin made his first public comments Sunday on the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis.

The 48-year old Martin is an East St. Louis native and he posted a powerful statement on Twitter and Instagram.

“It has to stop," Martin wrote. "The violence toward people of color, the hate, the racism, the systemic oppression. It has to stop. Our voices matter. Our LIVES matter. For too long, we’ve see it time and time again — from Dr. King’s marches to the LA riots, and our fight today — it’s gone on far too long and it cannot keep happening.

“I am heartbroken at the murder of George Floyd and so many others, and to see them senselessly ripped away from loved ones. I am a husband, a parent and a leader of inspiring young black men. We shouldn’t have to live in fear —enough is enough. While I’m on this earth, my voice won’t be silent until the injustice stops.

“It goes beyond a post on social media. It’s time to join together in our pain, to mourn, to stand united against oppression and ACT to create change. We must live and lead with compassion for one another. Now, more than ever before, it’s important to love each other, to listen to each other and grow together. All a man ever wants to do is be respected. We must do better. It has to stop.”

Northwest's Marcus Klein secures academic all-district honor



INDIANAPOLIS -&nbsp;The NCAA announced the attendance numbers for the 2019 football season which had seven MIAA members in the Top 25.&nbsp;

Pittsburg State finished fifth nationally in Division II with an average of 7,705 fans per game last season. Central Missouri ranked ninth as it had an average of 7,360 fans per game. In the top 15 was Missouri Western with an average of 5,833 fans and Washburn with an average of 5,654.&nbsp;

Northwest Missouri and Fort Hays State each averaged over 5,400 fans per game to finish the season in the Top 18 in the Division. Missouri Southern was the final member of the Association to be rank in the top 25 as it drew an average of 4,802 fans.&nbsp;

Over 343,500 fans attended a football game on an Association’s campus last fall. The 2019 season also saw an increase of MIAA football fans compared to the previous year. The COVID-19 pandemic canceled spring practices for Missouri Western and nearly all college football teams around the country, but for the first time, the NCAA is allowing coaches to work with players individually in June and July.  The hope is to make up for missing spring ball and accelerate the process of getting ready for the 2020 season.

Missouri Western doesn't know when they will open the 2020 football season as the NCAA has said each Division II school can only play 10 games this season.&nbsp; A new schedule will likely be released next month and the season should start the second week in September.

Griffon football players can return June 8; NCAA allowing coaches to work with players individually

ST. JOSEPH - Missouri Western women's basketball head coach Candi Whitaker announced the addition of three transfers to the signing class for the 2020-21 season.

Two of the three will come to MWSU after initially heading for the NCAA Division I level after high school.

G | So. | 5-7 | Central Arkansas/UMKC | Kansas City, Mo.

Prospects Nation ranked Budgetts as the No. 22 point guard in the country coming out of Lincoln Prep Academy and the No. 120-ranked prospect overall. She earned All-State honors following her senior season and was a three-time first team all-conference selection. Budgetts did not see playing time her freshman year at Central Arkansas.

Whitaker: "Brionna is a play-making guard who will help us play fast and up-tempo. She's proven she can score in a variety of ways as well as create for others. We are excited she's staying close to home and that we will have the chance to invest in her as a Griffon."

F | Jr. | 6-0 | Butler Community College | Oklahoma City, Okla.

Gross averaged 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season at Butler County where she started 30 games for a Grizzlies team that went 25-8 and claimed the NJCAA Region VI title for a second consecutive season. As a freshman at Butler, Gross shot 55.8% while averaging 4.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Whitaker: "Jelesa joins us from a tremendous junior college program at Butler and knows what it takes to compete at a high level. She brings great length and versatility to our team and we are looking forward to getting her to campus and working with her."

G/F | Jr. | 5-10 | South Plains Community College / UMass | Atlanta, Ga.

Another junior college regional champion, McCoy averaged 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as South Plains went 32-1 and claimed the NJCAA Region V championship. McCoy shot 60.4% from the field and 45.5% from 3-point range in her lone season at South Plains. She started 16 games and appeared in 26 as a freshman at UMass, averaging 4.7 points and 3.8 rebounds. McCoy prepped at Archer High School where she picked up All-State, All-Region and All-County honors helping her team to the Georgia Final Four.

Whitaker: "Asia brings great experience to our team and has shown the ability to play multiple positions at a high level. Her rebounding ability on both ends of the court is something we are really excited about. We are thrilled to welcome Asia to the Griffon family."

This trio joins Kelcie Hale to give Whitaker's second recruiting class at MWSU four total transfers and nine total after five incoming freshmen signed in November.

It was the highest cumulative GPA ever recorded by student-athletes at MWSU, aided by a semester GPA of 3.45. Fifteen of the department's 16 active teams achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The only team under 3.0 had a 2.92 following the spring semester. That made the first time in Griffon Athletics history every team had at least a 2.90 cumulative GPA.

The Griffon tennis team paced women's teams at Missouri Western with a spring semester GPA of 4.0 and led the department with a 3.76 cumulative GPA. Baseball led the way amongst men's teams with a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

MWSU student-athletes break another record in the classroom

COLUMBIA, Mo.  – Mizzou Women's Basketball will host TCU at Mizzou Arena in the 2020 SEC/Big 12 Challenge this upcoming season, as announced by the league offices on Thursday. Official game information and start times will be announced at a later date.

It will be the third matchup and the first since 1990 between the two schools, with the Tigers holding a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. Mizzou earned a 67-59 victory over the Horned Frogs in Forth Worth, Texas on Dec. 31, 1989 and a 71-48 win in Columbia on Dec. 29, 1990. 

This season’s matchup will be the third time Mizzou has participated in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Previously, Mizzou earned wins over Kansas State (73-59 – Nov. 30, 2017) and at West Virginia (68-51 – Dec. 2, 2018). 

Mizzou is coming off a 2019-20 campaign where the freshman duo of Aijha Blackwell (Berkeley, Mo.) and Hayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) both earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors. Blackwell led Mizzou in scoring (15.0 ppg, rebounding (7.3 rpg) and assists (2.7 apg) while Frank averaged 11.8 points per game and led in the SEC in free throw percentage (.878).

K-State women to host Kentucky in upcoming SEC/Big 12 Challenge

IRVING, Texas - The Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences have announced the 2020 matchups for their women’s basketball challenge. Kansas will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face Ole Miss as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

The matchup between the Jayhawks and the Rebels will be the third all-time meeting between the two programs. Ole Miss leads the series 2-0 after defeating Kansas inside Allen Fieldhouse, 78-76, in 2006.

Kansas is 3-1 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, having defeated Florida in 2019-20 in Allen Fieldhouse. KU's last two challenge victories came on the road at LSU in 2018-19 and at home over Arkansas in 2017-18. 

Every team from the Big 12 will participate, while 10 teams from the SEC will take part. The format features five home games on campus sites for each conference per year.

Game dates and tip times, along with television designations, will be released when available.

“The SEC/Big 12 Challenge proved to be a successful event for both conferences since its inception in 2014,” said Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “These contests provide high-quality matchups that prepare our teams for the rigors of Big 12 play, while showcasing the excitement of women’s basketball.”

The inaugural challenge was held in 2014. The 10-team format began in 2016 with the two conferences splitting the challenge in 2017 and 2018. The Big 12 won the event in 2019 with eight of its teams collecting victories.

Kansas will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face Ole Miss as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.The matchup between the Jayhawks and the Rebels will be the third all-time meeting between the two programs. Ole Miss leads the series 2-0 after defeating Kansas inside Allen Fieldhouse, 78-76, in 2006.Kansas is 3-1 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, having defeated Florida in 2019-20 in Allen Fieldhouse. KU's last two challenge victories came on the road at LSU in 2018-19 and at home over Arkansas in 2017-18. Every team from the Big 12 will participate, while 10 teams from the SEC will take part. Under the recommendation of MINK League Commissioner Ron Rodriguez, the league has elected to cancel the 2020 season. This decision was made due to the ongoing nationwide COVID-19 pandemic and the many uncertainties that still remain. The league prioritizes player, staff, and guest safety above all other factors.&nbsp;

MINK League Commissioner Ron Rodriguez said, “It is with great disappointment that the MINK League has determined that we cannot play this season. We join the many other leagues across the United States that have been affected by the COVID-19 virus and the fallout from it. But we must have the safety of our communities, host families, players, coaches, staff and officials as our main concern. Our communities are a vital part of the MINK League and we enjoy and appreciate their support. We made every effort to play this season and delayed the decision to make the most educated decision possible.”

“The summer tradition that is MINK League Baseball is something we hold very special. 2021 is going to be a very special season, a celebration. We want to thank all of the health care and frontline workers that have worked to keep us safe, and our thoughts are with those affected. MINK League cancels its 2020 summer baseball season

May 27, 2020 – In an announcement made Wednesday by Principal Dr. Terri Godfrey and Athletic Director David Lau, the Central Indians have officially named Roger Smith as the next Central High School girls head basketball coach.

Roger Smith brings 17 years of coaching experience to Central High School.  Most recently, he served as the Associate Head Coach at Missouri Western State University from 2012-2019.  During that time, Smith helped turn around a struggling Griffon program that went 46-93 from 2008-2012.  Since that time the Griffons compiled a 116-86 record, had back to back 20 win seasons, and won the 2017 MIAA regular season championship.

Smith also has experience coaching in the Oklahoma City area on the high school level, winning a state championship while on the staff at Putnam City.  He served as the head coach at Cassady School and Little Axe High School in Oklahoma.

“We are excited to have Coach Smith join our team at Central.” said Dr. Terri Godfrey.  “He brings proven experience and leadership to a program that graduated only one senior”

“I am thrilled that Roger will be the next coach to lead our program,” said Athletic Director Dave Lau.  “We are very fortunate to hire someone with Roger’s experience, as well as, the character, integrity and leadership skills he possesses to lead the Central Lady Indians,” Lau added.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts in History Education from the University of Central Oklahoma.  He and his wife, Cristina, have three children – Isabella, Griffin and Price.

Central hires former MWSU assistant Roger Smith as new girls' basketball coach

The athletic department at the University of Kansas has told donors it will make across-the-board pay cuts and furloughs as it faces a budget shortfall of up to 20%, even if full football and basketball seasons are played.

Jayhawks athletic director Jeff Long said in an email that employees making less than $50,000 will face a three-week furlough this summer; those making up to $149,000 can choose between a 10-day furlough or a pay cut of either 3.5% or 5% depending on their salary; those making up to $299,000 can choose a 10-day furlough or cut of either 7.5% and 10%; and those making $300,000 or more will take a 10% pay cut.

Long joined football coach Les Miles and basketball coach Bill Self in taking pay cuts in April. When those are combined with the latest cuts, Long said the athletic department would save about $1.15 million.

"We prolonged enacting measures that impact our people as long as we could,'' Long said in the email, "but it has become clear that the across-the-board reductions were necessary for the short and long-term financial needs of this department.''

St. Joseph School District: 2020 Summer Athletics Re-entry Plan

The St. Joseph School District values the importance of the educational opportunities that athletics provide and recognizes the threats presented by COVID-19. We believe our plan for re-entry will help our student-athletes workout and compete in the safest manner possible.

Phase I: June 15–28 - Conditioning Only

● Daily coach/athlete screening: If temperature is above 100 degrees fahrenheit or the athlete has been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days, the coach/athlete may not remain.

● No water fountain use: Athletes must supply their own water and should show their own water bottle when they are screened.

● No balls or sport-specific work allowed.

● Re-acclimating students to physical conditioning and fitness is the priority.

● We are adhering to limits on the size of gatherings and maintaining social distancing.

● Trainers will do all maintenance work (taping) out on the fields, but we are limiting unnecessary interaction with the training room and trainers.

Phase I SPECIFIC: Conditioning – Outdoor ONLY

Maximum 60 athletes per session: 3 groups with 20 per group

Athletic training rooms● Limit athletes based on size/capacity to allow for physical distancing and proper cleaning between athletes.● No use of cold/ice tubs for groups. However, if heat stroke/illness is a potential, an ice tub should be ready for treatment.● No use of heat packs, ultrasound, electronic stimulation units initially. These items may be used once the facility has enough cleaning supplies for essential areas and individuals. Continue to clean in between each use.● Remove and store non-essential equipment to minimize surface cleaning.Locker rooms● No use of tubs, showers, lockers until physical distancing guidelines are lifted.● Can be used as bathroom facilities only if appropriate cleaning measures can be completed.● Remove and store non-essential equipment to minimize surface cleaning.Bathroom Facilities● Conduct consistent and frequent cleaning as outlined by CDC or facilities should be locked if unable to be sufficiently cleaned.● Adequate hand washing or sanitizer available and restocked on a regular interval.Equipment● Personal equipment should be cleaned with disinfectant before and after each use.● Avoid community equipment use when possible. If not possible, equipment should be cleaned before and after each individual use. An exception is ball use.● Ball sports - wipe down balls between drills, different users or have individual use ball availability if possible.● Water/drinks - Each athlete should have their own individual drink. Encourage extra water options in case an athlete forgets their own water bottle.● Individual towel use only.Mouthguards● In the current phase of return to sport, no contact is recommended. As contact is not recommended, each individual athlete must weigh the risk of infection with the use of a mouthguard with the benefit of protecting against dental trauma. If athletes are in a position where dental trauma or contact can occur, continue to use their personal mouthguards during play with the appropriate safeguards.● There should be no sharing of mouthguards.● In between uses, athletes should wash or sanitize hands before insertion and removal of the mouthguard.● Recommend players have individual containers labeled into which they can place their mouthguard and not have it hanging on a helmet or out in the open.● If the mouthguard is soiled, or a player is unsure if they have picked up another athlete's mouthguard, the mouthguard should be washed thoroughly with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.● Masks should be worn in public, outside of sport, as directed by state or local government and what is currently recommended by the CDC.● We do recommend that coaches, staff and spectators wear masks or face protection.● Masks should be considered while athletes are participating in their sport.
