The St. Joseph Mustangs broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, defeating the Carroll Merchants 3-1 Sunday at Merchants Park in Carroll, Iowa.

Mustangs eek out win at Carroll Sunday, scoring go-ahead run in the ninth

St. Joseph native and former Missouri Western golfer Brad Nurski claimed his fourth Missouri Amateur Golf Championship Sunday at St. Joseph Country Club, defeating Presten Richardson of Mount Vernon in Match Play 11 &amp; 9.

Nurski did not lose a hole in the scheduled 36-hole match.&nbsp;Nurski finished with a 66 on his first 18 holes, while Richardson carded a 72. Nurski shot a 32 on the next nine, while Richardson totaled a 38.

Nurski becomes just the sixth player in the tournament’s 117-year history to win four titles. This win is his first in the event since 2018.

Nurski has earned himself an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship in Chaska, Minnesota, which will take place from Aug. 12-18.

Royals offense struggles to produce runs, fall to Guardians 7-2

After Jose Ramirez gave the Guardians a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, hitting a solo home run to right field, the Royals would go on to score seven unanswered runs over the next five innings.&nbsp;

The scoring got started in the bottom of the second inning as the Royals hit back to back home runs, Salvador Perez hitting the first to left center, Hunter Renfroe the second to right field, pushing the Royals ahead 2-1.&nbsp;

After Kyle Isbel struck out to start the third inning, the Royals would score three more runs before another out was recorded, runs being driven in by Vinnie Pasquantino, Perez, and MJ Melendez.&nbsp;

Isbel would homer in the fourth inning to add one more, a Freddy Fermin sacrifice fly in the fifth inning would push the Royals lead to 7-1.&nbsp; The Guardians finally responded scoring runs in the seventh and eighth inning.&nbsp;

Kansas City would extend the lead more in the bottom half of the eighth with another three run inning.&nbsp; Maikel Garcia would score on a wild pitch before Pasquantino would hit the fourth home run of the game for the Royals, a two run blast to right field.&nbsp;

The win helped Kansas City get within seven games of the AL Central lead, sitting behind the Guardians and Minnesota Twins.&nbsp; The Royals are back in the playoff picture however, holding the third wildcard spot currently.&nbsp;

Mustangs fend off Mudcats in Chillicothe Thursday

The Kansas City Royals gained some ground in the division on Thursday night, scoring a big series opening win over an AL Central Rival, and beating the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 at Kauffman Stadium.

Royals starting pitcher Michael Wacha continued a strong string of starts by the Royals rotation, giving up just one run over 5.1 innings and striking out six batters.&nbsp; Over the last four games, Royals starters have surrendered just three runs through 24.2 innings.

The Guardians took the lead off Wacha in the fifth inning.&nbsp; A Tyler Freeman single and Steven Kwan double put two in scoring position with no outs before&nbsp;Daniel Schneemann flew out to right field bringing Freeman across to score on the sacrifice fly.&nbsp;

The Royals would grab the lead in the bottom of the sixth though, back to back triples by Kyle Isbel and Maikel Garcia to open the inning tying the score.&nbsp; Salvador Perez later in the inning would single to score Garcia.&nbsp;

Kansas City's bullpen looked sharp after Sam Long replaced Wacha in the sixth inning, giving up no hits over the remainder of the game and striking out five.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Long earned the win, striking out four of the five batters, and walking one over 1.2 innings.&nbsp; John Schreiber recorded his 17th hold before James McArthur would come in and closed the door for his 14th save of the season.

Royals score big 2-1 division win over Cleveland Guardians

The St. Joseph Mustangs resumed a game with the Carroll Merchants on Wednesday - a game that was suspended in the ninth inning Tuesday night due to weather.

The game was resumed in the top of the ninth at Phil Welch Stadium, and the Mustangs held on to win it 5-3. In that first game, East Buchanan graduate Broncho Witt got the win, tossing eight innings and striking out five. He allowed five hits, three earned runs and five walks.

The Mustangs then played a full game against the Merchants Wednesday, which was a scheduled home game. Carroll won that game 15-11 in 11 innings.

The Merchants scored nine runs in the first three innings, but the game was tied 11-11 after the eighth. Carroll scored four runs in the top of the 11th to put it away.

Darius Freeman was 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run and two runs scored for the Mustangs. Easton Bruce returned to the lineup and scored two runs on a hit and two walks.

The Mustangs sit at 23-3 on the season. The Merchants are still the only team to have beaten St. Joseph this season.

St. Joseph is at Chillicothe Thursday night at 7 p.m.

Mustangs win resumed game with Merchants, drop second game in extra innings

The Kansas City Royals used a two out, five run rally in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Miami Marlins 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon, securing their 13th series win of the season.&nbsp;

The Royals offense struggled at first against Marlins starter&nbsp;Valente Bellozo, making his major league debut after being called up on Wednesday, getting just two hits through five innings against the rookie.&nbsp;

The Marlins took the lead in the second inning, catcher Nick Fortes singling to drive in shortstop Vidal Bruján.&nbsp; From there however, Royals starter Brady Singer would surrender just one more hit.&nbsp;

Singer looked brilliant on the mound despite giving up the run, throwing 7.1 innings and striking out five batters, giving up five hits and walking one.&nbsp; Following a pitch clock violation strikeout on Fortes in the eighth inning, Singer gave way to Angel Zerpa who recorded the final two outs of the inning.&nbsp;

The Royals rally began in the bottom half of the inning with two outs as shortstop Bobby Witt Jr lasered a triple into the right center gap.&nbsp; Two pitches later, designated hitter Vinnie Pasquantino would single to drive in Witt Jr., tying the game at one a piece.

Dairon Blanco would pinch run for Pasquantino, going on to steal second base, and eventually scoring on a Salvador Perez double.&nbsp; Nick Loftin, who to this point was 3-for 38 over his last several at bats, singled to score Perez.&nbsp;

The final runs scored as with the bases loaded, Freddy Fermin singled to score both MJ Melendez and Hunter Renfroe.&nbsp; Michael Massey, who struckout to open the inning pinch hitting for Garrett Hampson, ended the inning with a groundout.&nbsp;

James McArthur, who had been warming up for a save situation, came on to close out the game with three straight outs.

While Singer didn't earn the win, he was the third straight Royals starter to record a quality start, the Royals rotation holding Miami to just two runs across 19.1 innings for an ERA of 0.93.

Kansas City will now welcome the Cleveland Guardians to town for a four game weekend series.&nbsp; Earlier this month the Royals split a series with the Guardians in Cleveland, with one game being postponed until August 26th.&nbsp;

Big inning propels Royals to 5-1 series finale win over Marlins

Two men who were instrumental in bringing Kansas City Chiefs training camp to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph are now members of the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.

Dirck Clark, former president of the Missouri Western Board of Governors, and Charlie Shields, former State Senator of the 34th District, were among the inductees in this year’s St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class.

Shields, a St. Joseph resident, says he was surprised by the honor, but humbled nonetheless.

"It's been awhile since we actually got training camp to St. Joseph," Shields told KFEQ Radio. "It's a great honor and I know Dirck (Clark) feels the same thing to be recognized for our efforts to help bring the camp to St. Joseph."

Training camp has been in St. Joseph since 2010. Leading up that, Shields says it was a years-long process of getting the agreement done.

The idea and vision of camp being held at Missouri Western really started several years before 2010, when the team held OTAs on campus.

"A few years before we located the camp, we had summer OTAs at Missouri Western," Shields recalled. "And the community just turned out. It was a beautiful summer morning, and I think the Chiefs were impressed with how the community turned out, what the facilities looked like and I think they started to see the possibility."

Talks continued between Shields, then President Pro Tem of the Missouri Senate, the Missouri Western Board of Governors and Chiefs ownership about moving training camp from River Falls, Wisconsin to St. Joseph.

 Shields says there was a meeting with then Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson and team chairman Clark Hunt at halftime of a preseason game with the St. Louis Rams.

Part of the agreement was Shields securing $25 million in tax credits from the Missouri Development Finance Board to help with Arrowhead Stadium renovations.

"But, there's really one thing that was going to make this attractive - bringing the camp back to St. Joseph and Missouri," Shields said, "and they agreed that it was a great idea. That if we put a package together, they would do that. That's exactly how the whole thing got started."

As part of the plan, the Chiefs donated $10 million to Missouri Western to help with construction of the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex and other facilities to help lure the Chiefs to campus.

The original deal was for five seasons. Now, 14 years later, Shields says all of Chiefs Kingdom can see how beneficial and impactful having the camp at Missouri Western has been.

"The indoor training facility with the weight rooms, conditioning rooms, therapy rooms, all top notch. All of that adds together as to why that thing has been there 14 years. It's good for the Chiefs, the community and Missouri Western."

"And the fans, all you have to do is watch on one of those practice mornings, the trail of cars coming up from Kansas City to see training camp. It shows that it makes a huge impact."

 </figure>By TOMMY REZACSt. Joseph PostTwo men who were instrumental in bringing Kansas City Chiefs training camp to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph are now members of the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame.Dirck Clark, former president of the Missouri Western Board of Governors, and Charlie Shields, former State Senator of the 34th District, were among the inductees in this year’s St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class.Shields, a St. Joseph resident, says he was surprised by the honor, but humbled nonetheless."It's been awhile since we actually got training camp to St. Joseph," Shields told KFEQ Radio. "It's a great honor and I know Dirck (Clark) feels the same thing to be recognized for our efforts to help bring the camp to St. Joseph."Training camp has been in St. Joseph since 2010. Leading up that, Shields says it was a years-long process of getting the agreement done.The idea and vision of camp being held at Missouri Western really started several years before 2010, when the team held OTAs on campus."A few years before we located the camp, we had summer OTAs at Missouri Western," Shields recalled. "And the community just turned out. It was a beautiful summer morning, and I think the Chiefs were impressed with how the community turned out, what the facilities looked like and I think they started to see the possibility."Talks continued between Shields, then President Pro Tem of the Missouri Senate, the Missouri Western Board of Governors and Chiefs ownership about moving training camp from River Falls, Wisconsin to St. Joseph. Shields says there was a meeting with then Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson and team chairman Clark Hunt at halftime of a preseason game with the St. Louis Rams.Part of the agreement was Shields securing $25 million in tax credits from the Missouri Development Finance Board to help with Arrowhead Stadium renovations."But, there's really one thing that was going to make this attractive - bringing the camp back to St. Joseph and Missouri," Shields said, "and they agreed that it was a great idea. That if we put a package together, they would do that. That's exactly how the whole thing got started."As part of the plan, the Chiefs donated $10 million to Missouri Western to help with construction of the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex and other facilities to help lure the Chiefs to campus.The original deal was for five seasons. Now, 14 years later, Shields says all of Chiefs Kingdom can see how beneficial and impactful having the camp at Missouri Western has been."The indoor training facility with the weight rooms, conditioning rooms, therapy rooms, all top notch. All of that adds together as to why that thing has been there 14 years. It's good for the Chiefs, the community and Missouri Western.""And the fans, all you have to do is watch on one of those practice mornings, the trail of cars coming up from Kansas City to see training camp. Charlie Shields recalls the agreement that first brought Chiefs camp to St. Joseph

The Kansas City Royals bounced back from a weekend sweep by the Texas Rangers, defeating the Miami Marlins at Kauffman Stadium 4-1 on Monday, powered by back to back home runs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez.

The Marlins did take the first lead of the game in the third inning, an RBI double from Bryan De La Cruz scoring Jazz Chisolm, but the Royals would storm back in the fourth inning for three runs.&nbsp;

With a 2-1 count, Pasquantino hammered a home run to right field to tie up the game, one pitch later Perez would hit his 12th home run of the year to left center to take the lead.&nbsp; Later in the inning with Micheal Massey on second base, Kyle Isbel would single to drive him in for the third run.&nbsp;

The Royals fourth run came in the sixth inning on another home run, Hunter Renfroe hitting his seventh of the season.&nbsp;

Cole Ragans spun a gem to shut down the Marlins, striking out 11 batters through six innings and giving up just the one run on four hits.&nbsp; The Royals bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, striking out four and giving up no hits.

The win for Kansas City marks the first series opening win since June 7th over the Mariners, a game in which they came back from being down 8-0 after four innings.&nbsp;

The Royals will send Seth Lugo to the mound to start game two of the series against the Marlins Yonny Chrinos, starting just his second game of the season and searching for his first win.&nbsp; First pitch is at 7:10pm with a 6:30 pregame on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

The Royals made a flurry of roster moves prior to the series opener with the Miami Marlins on Monday.&nbsp;

In need of an offensive spark the Royals designated reliever Jake Brentz for assignment and to fill the open spot on the 40 man roster selected the contract of first basemen C.J Alexander, calling him up from Omaha.&nbsp;

Alexander, who the Royals acquired in 2022 in the trade in which they also acquired Drew Waters, spent all of this season raking with the Omaha Stormchasers.&nbsp; The 27-year-old was slashing .323/.369/.555 with 16 doubles and nine homers in 56 games with the Storm Chasers.

While listed as a first baseman, Alexander has primarly played third base during the season in Omaha.&nbsp; The move for Alexander moves Maikel Garcia to second base, where he's played just four major league games and 11 in the minors.

The move for Alexander was also necessary as the Royals placed Adam Frazier on the 10 day injured list with a right thumb strain.&nbsp; Frazier had been dealing with thumb issues and suffered the injury after colliding with Garrett Hampson in the outfield on Saturday.&nbsp;

Kansas City also reinstated second baseman Michael Massey from the 10 day injured list and in a corresponding move optioned outfielder Nelson Velázquez to Omaha.&nbsp; Massey will be relegated to be the Royals designated hitter until he's ready to play in the field, which could take a few weeks.

Velázquez has hit .200 this season since making the Royals’ Opening Day roster and just .122 in his last 15 games. With Massey taking over DH at-bats, the Royals needing another infielder with Frazier’s injury and the team facing a slew of right-handed starters on the upcoming schedule, the Royals made the move to get Velázquez everyday at-bats in Omaha

Back to back home runs power strong start from Cole Ragans in 4-1 Royals win

The St. Joseph Mustangs used a big fifth inning to help push their win streak to 10 games, completing a perfect weekend and defeating the Nevada Griffons 7-4 on Sunday.&nbsp;

The Mustangs took scored in the first inning to take the lead on an RBI single from Jeter Mauzey, but in the bottom half of the inning the Griffons would score two to take the lead.&nbsp;

After a home run from Dom Felix tied the game in the second inning, the Griffons would again take the lead in the third inning.&nbsp; The Mustangs would tie the game back up in the fourth with an RBI single from Trevor McCollum.&nbsp;

The lead would be taken back for good by the Mustangs in the fifth inning.&nbsp; A triple from Jordan Black would score two runs, a double from Felix would later bring Black in to score as well.&nbsp; A sacrifice hit from Darius Freeman would score Felix for the final Mustangs run, leaving them up 7-3 after five innings.

The Griffons would score their final run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Mid Buchanan alumni Denton Biller started the game, giving up three runs and walking six batters.&nbsp; St. Joseph Christian alum Camden Lutz would earn the win pitching 1.2 innings and striking out four in relief of Biller.&nbsp;

Felix led the way hitting going 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Mustangs are now 22-2 on the season and are on a ten game winning streak.&nbsp; They have on off day on Monday and will travel to Carroll, Iowa for a matchup with the Carroll Merchants on Tuesday at 7pm.

The Kansas City Royals offense struggled to produce hits once again on Sunday afternoon in Arlington, a day after getting three hits in a 6-0 shutout loss to the Rangers.&nbsp;

The Royals were shutout by the Rangers 4-0 on Sunday, earning just two hits, and for the first time since April 6th fell out of playoff contention.&nbsp; During a long road trip with stops in Anaheim, Oakland, and Arlington, the Royals record was 2-7.

Mustangs dominate Kansas City Monarchs in 11-0 run rule victory

The Kansas City Royals bullpen gave up five unanswered runs to blow a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, as Kansas City fell to the Texas Rangers 6-2 in the series opener in Arlington, Texas.&nbsp;

The Royals took the first lead of the game in the third inning as center fielder Kyle Isbel hit his fifth home run of the year to right center.&nbsp; But the Rangers tied the game in the very next inning, Wyatt Langford doubling to score Adolis Garcia.

Extra inning win pushes Mustangs win streak to seven games, beat Monarchs 6-5

The Kansas City Royals snapped a three game losing streak, powered by two Freddy Fermin home runs, beating the Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon 3-2 at the Oakland Coliseum.&nbsp;

Fermin's first home run of the day came in the second inning, a 398 home run to left field.&nbsp; Just two innings later, he would hit his second to almost the same spot in left field, traveling just seven feet shy at 391 feet.&nbsp;

Starting pitcher Seth Lugo had the Athletics number for most of the game, pitching six shutout innings, before surrendering a two out tying home run to Zack Gelof in the bottom of the seventh.&nbsp; Gelof had a home run in all three games of the series against Kansas City.

After James McArthur came on in relief and recorded the final out of the seventh inning, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr would snatch the lead back for the Royals in the top of the eighth with his only hit of the game, hitting a leadoff home run that traveled 422 feet to left field, giving the Royals the 3-2 lead.&nbsp;

The Athletics did threaten in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Chris Stratton, who had runners on the corners with two outs, but Stratton would get&nbsp;Max Schuemann to fly out to center fielder Kyle Isbel for the final out, earning his fourth save of the season.

The Royals will now travel to Arlington, Texas for a matchup with the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers.&nbsp; Brady Singer is scheduled to start the series opener against Nathan Eovaldi for the Rangers.&nbsp; First pitch is at 7:05pm with a 6:30 pregame on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

 </figure>By MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostThe Kansas City Royals snapped a three game losing streak, powered by two Freddy Fermin home runs, beating the Oakland Athletics on Thursday afternoon 3-2 at the Oakland Coliseum.&nbsp;Fermin's first home run of the day came in the second inning, a 398 home run to left field.&nbsp; Just two innings later, he would hit his second to almost the same spot in left field, traveling just seven feet shy at 391 feet.&nbsp;Starting pitcher Seth Lugo had the Athletics number for most of the game, pitching six shutout innings, before surrendering a two out tying home run to Zack Gelof in the bottom of the seventh.&nbsp; Gelof had a home run in all three games of the series against Kansas City.After James McArthur came on in relief and recorded the final out of the seventh inning, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr would snatch the lead back for the Royals in the top of the eighth with his only hit of the game, hitting a leadoff home run that traveled 422 feet to left field, giving the Royals the 3-2 lead.&nbsp;The Athletics did threaten in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Chris Stratton, who had runners on the corners with two outs, but Stratton would get&nbsp;Max Schuemann to fly out to center fielder Kyle Isbel for the final out, earning his fourth save of the season.The Royals will now travel to Arlington, Texas for a matchup with the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers.&nbsp; Brady Singer is scheduled to start the series opener against Nathan Eovaldi for the Rangers.&nbsp; First pitch is at 7:05pm with a 6:30 pregame on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM).

Ragans surrendered just four hits and two runs over six innings of action, striking out seven batters.&nbsp; John Schreiber would come on in relief in the seventh, surrendering two more runs. Oakland would add their final run in the eighth inning.&nbsp;

Both the Royals and Athletics had eight hits each in the game.&nbsp; Witt Jr and Kyle Isbel were both 2 for 4 in the effort, with Witt Jr. driving in the lone run of the game.&nbsp;

The St. Joseph Mustangs win streak went to six games as they scored eight unanswered runs on way to an 11-2 win over the Jefferson City Renegades.

The Mustangs scored eight runs through two innings, the biggest coming on a three run home run by Mason Holton, before the Renegades finally answered with one run in the bottom of the second.

After the Mustangs scored two more runs in the fourth inning, no one else would score until the bottom of the sixth, the Renegades Cooper Walkoff singling to score Cy Darnell. The scoring would end with the Mustangs scoring one more run in the top of the eighth inning.

Holton led the way hitting going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI's, all coming on his home run in the second inning.&nbsp;

Roy Holcomb pitched five innings giving up one run on four hits to earn the win.&nbsp; Bishop Leblond alum Frank Gall pitched one inning of relief giving up two hits and one run.&nbsp;

The Mustangs are now 18-2 on the year and return home for a three game homestand.&nbsp; The first two games will come against the Kansas City Monarchs on Thursday and Friday.&nbsp; Both first pitches will be at 7pm.

St. Joseph Mustangs win streak moves to six games, clobber Renegades 11-2

The St. Joseph Sports Commission has announced the schedule for the third annual Holiday Hoops Classic at Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph. 

The Holiday Hoops Classic showcases boys and girls high school basketball teams from seven schools in Buchanan County along with other teams of interest from around the area, competing in a classic doubleheader format. 

The annual holiday showcase features 16 games over three days beginning on Thursday, December 19th with the Lafayette girls facing Columbia Battle while the Lafayette boys will face will see Oak Park, a Class 6 final four team in 2024. 

In addition to Holiday Hoops the St. Joseph Sports Commission has also announced the inaugural New Year's showcase, featuring 14 games that will be contested over two days, also at Civic Arena.

The games will also be played in a boys and girls doubleheader format, opening on Friday January 3rd with the Leblond girls and boys facing Lafayette County.

Ticket information will be released in late fall in which all sales will be facilitated online and through the Civic Arena Box Office.
