Herman Lloyd Elrod, 98, St. Joseph, MO; passed away Monday, February 10, 2020 at a local healthcare facility.

Herman was born on May 14, 1921 to the late Ocle and Nellie (Knorr) Elrod in Clarksdale, MO.

He was a graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph.

In 1942 he began his honorable and distinguished service to his country in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a aeronautical engineer where he flew on 30 missions over Germany. Following the war he stayed in the Air Corps until it became the U.S. Air Force in 1947. He also served in the Korean War flying on 14 missions.

Herman remained in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement from the military in 1963 where he had achieved the rank of Master Sergeant.

After his military service, He embarked on a career in facilities maintenance beginning with Townsend &amp; Wall, and the former Missouri Methodist Hospital and finally with Carnation Pet Foods where he retired as their purchasing agent. &nbsp;

Herman was known to be able to fix anything, but as a hobby, he was also known to be a meticulous woodworking craftsman and many people marveled at his work over the decades.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On February 15, 1969 Herman married his wife Ernestine in St. Joseph. They celebrated nearly 51 years of marriage. She survives him of the home. Additional survivors include; step-granddaughters Debbie (Scott) Young, and Denise Hobbs both of Atlanta, GA., three great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Elrod &nbsp;was preceded in death by his parents and his stepson Larry O. Fisher.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to The St. Francis Xavier House of Bread.

She was born November 18, 1963 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Stephanie graduated from South Houston High School in Pasadena, Texas then later attended Missouri Western State University where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education. She was a member of the Alpha Gamma Sorority. She taught for the St. Joseph School District for 23 years. Teaching children was her passion.

Stephanie enjoyed shopping, traveling and most of all spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Myers; and sister, Shelly Brock

Survivors include husband of 39 years, Robert Gabbert; children, Amber Bodenhamer, Mathew Gabbert (Jamie, Joshua Gabbert (Kristen); grandchildren, Madison, Asher, Elam, Neva, Emmaryn, Wyatt; mother, June Berry; siblings, Mark Myers, Kent Myers (Blenda, Jeff Myers, Judy Green (Kenny); numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was born March 5, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Hub married Anna “Ruth” Drake September 2, 1977. She survives of the home.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines from 1942 to 1946. Hub retired from Whitaker Cable after many years of employment.

He enjoyed watching baseball, taking care of his lawn, cars, fishing and was a devoted Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Hub was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Sylvia (Dyer) Wright; and nephew, Kenny Koons.

Additional survivors include daughter, Linda Hart; granddaughters, Amy Duffield (Robert, Cynthia Gese (Darin); sister, Esther Koons; nieces, Susan Kneib and Sally Morlock; cousin, Ted Wright.

Robert attended schools at Jefferson County North and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1992. Robert worked various jobs throughout his life; rock crusher operator and rock crew supervisor for Hamm’s Quarry, bridge construction carpenter in Kansas City, plumber’s assistant, drove trucks for Allan Weishaar Trucking, and owned his own auto repair shop in McLouth for a brief time. Robert enjoyed playing pool, listening to music, working on cars, and along with friends participated in Dirt Track Racing. Robert was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Nortonville Knights of Columbus Council 2093.

Robert is survived by his mother, Linda, of Nortonville; his siblings, Michael (Sheila) Libel, II of Winchester, Andrew Libel, Winchester, Christina Libel, Nortonville, Edward (Tracey) Libel, Winchester, and Lt. Colonel Bryan (Heidi) Libel, West Linn, OR; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Michael, on June 7, 2005.

David Warren ‘Dave” Butler, 70 , former Mayor and long time City Commissioner of Atchison KS died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020 at his home.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00pm on Friday, Feb. 14th, 2020 at the funeral home. Following the memorial celebration service, visitation will continue at the Elks Lodge, 609 Kansas Ave from 8:00 to 10:00 pm. The body has been cremated and family interment will be at a later date in the Iola Cemetery, Sparks, KS. Dave was born on May 8, 1949 in Kansas City, KS, the son of Edgar W. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Gullikson) Butler. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1967 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas in 1972. David worked with his father in the family Butler RX Prescription business in Atchison. Following his dad’s retirement he owned and operated the business until he joined with Reynolds Drug Store. Dave also was the first full-time Pharmacist for the Atchison Hospital. After retiring from the hospital pharmacy he volunteered as a pharmacist at the Atchison Community Health Clinic and worked part time for the KEX RX Pharmacy, Atchison, KS. In 1993 he was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Award from the National Pharmacy Association for his community service and also named Citizen of the Year by the Atchison Daily Globe. He was a member of the Kansas Pharmacy Association, a former member of the Atchison Jaycees, a member of the National Rifle Assoc, Bellevue Country Club, Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Scouting, and the Fred Noonan Society, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer. Dave was active in the Elks BPO Lodge serving as Exalted Ruler two times, in 1976 and in 2019. He was a member of the Atchison Bass Club, Willie’s Coffee Club, had served on the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, was an Atchison City Commissioner for over 23 years, and served as Mayor of Atchison for several terms. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, smoking a cigar, and bourbon. Mr. Butler was one of the most dedicated, positive people who never knew a stranger and loved to talk up, promote, and work to improve his home town of Atchison, KS. He was proud of the new bridge project that he and the commission worked so hard on getting built during his time on the commission. He also was an avid KU Basketball Fan and KU Alumnus.

Dave was married to Kathleen M. Bell on Feb. 14, 1976. Kathy survives of their home in Atchison. Additional survivors include a son Greg J. (Tanya) Butler, Manhattan, KS and daughter Shari S. (Chad) Roth, Newton, KS and five grandchildren Brendan Butler, Madison Roth, Anabel Roth, Riley Roth, and Evie Roth. His parents, and two brothers, Steven and Harlan, preceded him in death.

Zion Baptist Church, Edgerton, MO. She enjoyed sewing, word search and adult coloring books. Dorothy especially enjoyed traveling with her husband to Minnesota a couple times a year to go fishing.

Dorothy married Edward Boatwright on August 17, 1944; he preceded her on February 17, 2006. Survivors include a sister, Mary Kay and Charles Zabel, Boulder, CO, nephews and nieces; Bruce and Phyllis Filley, St. Joseph, MO, Patricia and Kenny Massingill, Bashor, KS, Brent Filley, Hunnewell, MO, Jeff Zabel and Pete Zabel, CO., and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded by her parents and a brother, Frank Charles Filley.

Grayson Eugene Lee “Bubba Eugene” Seiler, 3, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed on to heaven in the arms of his mother and father on February 4, 2020.

He was born May 12, 2016, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Tyler and Cheyann Seiler.

He was a bright-blue eyed, loving brother, son and grandson. He was a ray of sunshine and touched many lives. He made everyone’s heart happy. He lived every minute of his life to the fullest. He loved to play with his siblings, swing, swim, cuddle, watch “The Grinch,” listen to music and be outdoors.

Frank was born on November 18,1936, in St. Joseph, Missouri to the late Harley and Geraldine (Stitt) Nichols.&nbsp;

Frank was a Christian.&nbsp; He proudly served in the United States Army and was a lawyer in the area for many years. He was very active in the Masonic Lodge.&nbsp;

Frank married Nancy Sue Krumme on June 23, 2000.&nbsp; She survives of the home.&nbsp;

Additional Survivors:&nbsp; daughter Patti Clark (Dave); three step-children including Brian Deatherage (Dawn) and Mark Deatherage; brother Jack Nichols (Mary) and three grandchildren.&nbsp;

Sheila was born October 29, 1942 to the late Charles and Eleanor (McClain) Huff, and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Sheila married Oliver Owens on May 27, 1972 in St. Joseph, MO. &nbsp;She spent many years as the favorite lunch lady at Hyde. Sundays were her favorite day of the week. She enjoyed family dinners with all her grandkids and great grandkids. This became their tradition years ago to help her fight through her battles with cancer starting in 2008. Since then, they gathered every week and it helped because she spent the last 5 years cancer free. Sheila was the rock to her very large family and they will continue to carry on her love and traditions for many years to come!

Marie Therese (Morris) Clement has been called home by our creator this morning. She was everyone’s favorite aunty, mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend. Robert Clement and Marie Clement shared a long and beautiful marriage together, and raised three amazing children: Chance Clement, Nick Wilder and Jason Wilder, and Skylar who passed away at the young age of nine days.

We love you so very much. Our lives would have been very different without you. You always were able to smile and laugh no matter what. You were always happy and inspired many from family to friends to complete strangers. You were a Saint in the face of adversity and have brought a lot of joy to many.

Marie was an enrolled and very active member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, as she was a PeaceMaker, and also regularly attended Potawatomi language classes, as well as participating in volunteer work and community events.

Marie was voted as “Miss Wheelchair Kansas” in 2009?, board president of Three Rivers, actively worked on the diversity council of AARP, and had many hobbies. Marie liked gardening, beadwork, cooking, drawing, and most of all, spending time with family.

The world has lost a radiant being, and the world has a little less sparkle. But we have also gained a magnificent angel, who now gets to run and dance and be free amongst our ancestors.

Give your loved ones an extra hug today, especially the ones that make life that much more enjoyable and you always look forward to seeing. We are all very thankful to have had her in our lives.

Marie will lie in state after noon Thursday, February 6th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow. A wake will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at the old bingo hall across from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Government Center at 162777 Q Road, Mayetta, KS.

Franklin Crawford Peters was born July 20, 1929 in Highland, Kansas to John and Blanche Ptomey Peters.

He grew up running the fields and farm with his brothers and sister in Iowa Point. Frank joinedthe United States Navy at the age of 17 and served his Country faithfully and honorably.He was a Warrior Sailor serving in the Korean War and Vietnam War. Frank was a bosun’smate; the deck sailors who drove the ship, heaved the lines, and made the ship look right. Heserved on ships such as the USS Breckinridge, the Radford, and the L.Y. Spear. As a ChiefPetty Officer, he ran river patrol boats out of Danang, Vietnam. Frank retired as a Senior ChiefBoatswain’s Mate after 24 years of service.

Upon his retirement from the navy he settled in Northeast Kansas. Frank was an avidoutdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and telling sea stories, many of which were true. Healways had a project of some sort in progress and he spent many hours taking care of his dogs.Another favorite pastime was playing practical jokes on his many nieces and nephews who saythat Uncle Frank always had a kind word for them, and they will truly miss him.

Mr. Peters passed away on February 4, 2020 in the Hiawatha Community Hospital after a briefbout with pneumonia,

Mr. Peters is preceded in death by his first wife Tommi Peters, infant son Arthur Dean Peters,step-daughter Nicole Dillon and brother Bill Peters.

He is survived by wife Dixie Peters, children: Patricia Peters Martin (Ron, John Karl Peters (Jen, Cheryl Bickley (Brian, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are siblings: Pat Olson, Wayne Peters, and Jerry Peters.A Celebration of Frank’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Shane Spangler will officiate.The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.Memorial contributions are suggested to the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard, sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.

He was born August 26, 1949 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Dale married Regina Hoffman September 17, 1971. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the 139th Air National Guard for 27 years, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Moila, American Legion and was an Eagle Scout. Dale was owner/operator of Vernon Brother’s Construction since 1983.

He enjoyed sprint cars, boating, spending time at the lake, and never missed his grandson Bradley’s baseball games.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Leta (Yates) Vernon.

Additional survivors include daughter, Michelle Vernon (Brian); grandchildren, Bradley Grippando (McKenzie, Nicole Grippando; brother, Greg Vernon (Mary Pat); numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

She is survived by 6 children: sons: Tony Walker, Mario, Harold, and Cedric Davis, daughters Barbara (Victor) Wallace and Felecia Davis, brothers, James, Robert, and Amos Jr., sisters, Juanita, Alene, Lurena, and Willie Davis, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Clarence “Pete” Morris, 76, of Elwood, Kansas died Sunday February 2, 2020.

Pete was born on June 5, 1943 in Elwood, Kansas to Perry and Margarette (Stizman) Morris.&nbsp; He lived all of his life in Elwood.&nbsp; Pete was a butcher at the Elwood and Highland, Kansas grocery stores, Carnation, then went to work at Snorkel in Elwood and retired in 2009.

Pete married Beverly Shelton on May 21, 1979.&nbsp; She survives of the home.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Edward “Ed” Morris, sisters; Dorothy and Georgie.

Garry was a vetran of the Vietnam War and served in the Navy.

He was employed at MeadWestvaco for nearly 38 years, where he worked in the shipping and receiving department.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis C, and Hazel E. (Hunt) Weyer, and his wife of 18 years, Willa Jean Weyer. Garry was also preceeded in death by his sisters, Lilah Dean and Louise Stout; brothers, Lawrence, Loyd, Charles and Jerry; daughter, Jean Danette Hardy; and great grandson, Sebastian Gray.

Garry is survived by stepdaughter, Jackie D. Patton; stepson, Jerry D. Patton; great granddaughters, Tina, Jeanette and Kathlene; great granddaughters Savannah, Serenity, Shayla and Jaide, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Ray was an associate member of the American Legion, served on the Sumner Cemetery Board, coached youth soccer and was a member of the McDonald’s Coffee Club. He enjoyed working on cars, playing pitch and cards, and especially his family.

He was married to Linda Domann on Feb. 1, 1975. Linda survives of the home. Rose Mary Tuley was born on June 13, 1924 in Muscotah, KS the daughter of Frank C. and Bertha B. (Delfelder) Tuley. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1942. Rose Mary was the first cook for the hot lunch program at the Effingham Elementary School, beginning in the 1955-56 school year. In 1966 the school district unified all elementary schools and she prepared meals for all of them at Effingham Grade School. In 1976 she moved to the high school as the kitchen manager. In 1977 she became the supervisor for the district and retired in 1986. Rose Mary was made an Honorary Member of the ACCHS Future Farmers Association. She was a member of the Effingham Union Church, was an active member of Areme Chapter#231 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Effingham. She served several times as Worthy Matron and was District Aid of District # 2, in 1968-69. Rose Mary was very involved with the growth of the Effingham Library through the Effingham Community Club. She served on the Library Board and worked at the library when needed. She and her husband Bob enjoyed camping and after their retirement, they traveled with their dog Tiger to Arizona for a warmer winter for several years.

She was married to Robert A. Barnett on Feb. 19, 1944 in Atchison Kansas. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2014. Survivors include two daughters; Lana Jo (Berry) Snyder, Deland, FL and Sherry (Jake) Vanderslice, Horton, KS , five grandchildren; Rachael, Kelli, Lucas, Sara and Emily, and eight great grandchildren. Her parents, husband Robert, a son Robert W. Barnett, and daughter, Mary Lou Barnett and a sister, Peggy Dryden preceded her in death.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Randall, Bobby and Roy Griggs, and his paternal grandmother, Vona Griggs.

Rex Allen Griggs Sr.  1966 - 2020

John Henry Roberts Jr. 67, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. 

He was born May 15, 1952 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Ella and John Roberts Sr. He married Linda Russell on August 28, 1971 and she survives of the home. He held various jobs and worked at Herbert Brooner, Dolly Madison and BMD as a Mechanic. He loved Westerns, traveling, fishing, and going to Branson. He had lots of friends, and enjoyed spending time with family, and was involved in Special Olympics. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Lucky and Jimmy Barnes, Marvin Roberts, and his sister, Virginia Walker. 

Survivors include, wife, Linda Kay Roberts of the home, daughter, Shelly Ann Roberts (Josh Smith, sons; John H. Roberts III, and wife Mary, and Ronald E. Roberts (Michelle Cress, grandsons, Michael and Kyle Duty, granddaughters, Emily and Madison Roberts, step granddaughter, Haleigh Seward, step grandsons, Tyler and Tyson Seward, great grandson, Jesse Harbord, great granddaughter, Kinslee Harbord, brother, George Roberts.

Delmas “Del” Burton, 66, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020.

He was born June 30, 1953 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Delmas graduated from Central High School. He worked at Quaker Oats for 20 + years, where he met many life-long friends. Delmas was a scuba diving instructor for over 20 years; in 1998 he earned his PADI Master Instructor Certificate. Over the years he shared his love of scuba diving with hundreds of students and other divers across the lakes of Southern Missouri and the Caribbean Sea.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Delmas was a musician and loved to play guitar and sing in front of his friends, family, and anyone who would listen.

He had a remarkable green thumb, loved his pet cats, watching movies, loved telling stories and jokes. Delmas loved spending time outdoors, boating, bird watching, having friends over for bonfires and watching the sunset on the lake with the love of his life, Joy. Most of all he loved spending time with friends and family whom he loved dearly.

Delmas was a loving son, brother, and best friend and will be missed by so many. He was an alright guy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold D. Burton.

Survivors include his loving companion, Joy Rock and her son, Jeff Rock; mother, Shirley Burton; siblings, Candy Burton (Jeannie, Darcy Burton (Nancy, Mark Burton (Joan, Scott Burton (Monica, Jay Burton (Heather, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
