Bertha A. O’Banion, 82, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

She was born November 11, 1937 in Grant City, Missouri to Chester and Opal (Thomas) King. Bertha married Roy O’Banion April 28, 1957; he preceded her in death January 2, 2002.

She was a member of Trinity United Brethren Church, a Brownie and Girlscout leader and did seamstress work out of her home. Bertha’s cookies and baking skills will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Roy; granddaughter, Johnna Ann Muff; sister, Ada May Fletchall (Eugene); brother, Don L. King; brothers-in-law, Charles Stuck and Terry Wintjen.

Survivors include daughter, Phyllis Muff (Johnny), grandsons, Christian (Danielle), Colby (Samantha Lough); great-grandchildren, Brandon Rudisill, Lillian Muff; sisters, Chesteen Stuck, Ruby Goff (Kenny), Mary Wintjen; sister-in-law, Vera King, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

&nbsp;John R. McKay, 75, Easton, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020.

He was born August 11, 1944 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Eugene and Katherine (Fullerton) McKay.

John married Karen Wise October 9, 1964; she survives of the home. He was a 1962 graduate of Central High School. John served in the Missouri Air National Guard from February 14, 1963 to February 14, 1969 as Supt. Sgn. Airman 1st Class.

He retired from Light and Power utility company in 2000 after working there for 30 years. He also worked for Second Harvest and then 3 years at SST.

John loved to travel, wood working, gardening, and fishing. His grandchildren were his life, he loved going to all of their school programs and sports activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Karen; children, Timothy McKay (Debi), Jenny Hovey (Jeff); grandchildren, Gabrielle (Anna), Jackson, Alexandria, Patrick; great-grandchild, Oakleigh; brother, Eugene McKay (Annette); sister, Terry Massengale, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family will gather with friends 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday, July 11, 2020 2407 N. Woodbine Road, St. Joseph, Missouri. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Deborah "Debi" K. Brott, 71, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. She was born Feb. 9, 1949, in St. Joseph, to Carroll and Betty (Colburn) Brott. Debi was a graduate of Central High School and Missouri Western, earning a Bachelor of Social Work, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She had formally been employed by Sister's Hospital and the Noyes Home. Debi was a loyal and dedicated employee of Boehringer Ingelheim for over 35 years, until her recent retirement in Jan. 2020. Anyone who worked alongside Debi would say she was a hardworking, kind colleague who put others before herself on numerous occasions. She had a passion for cooking shows and spending weekends cooking alongside her partner, Tammy Santos, of St. Joseph. She was deeply dedicated to her family and friends. Debi was preceded in death by father, Carroll "Babe" Brott, and beloved nephew, Brett Baltezor. Survivors include: her lifelong partner, Tammy Santos; her much loved mother, Betty Brott; and sisters: Trish Martin, Cyndi Hughes, Kathy Brott, Carol Baltezor, (Bill) and Shari Hendrix (Roger). Also: nieces Tia Brott-Silkett (Anita), Jesica Haave (Matt), and nephews, Dr. Douglas Hughes, Jr. (Katrina), John Haenni, and great nephews: Keyler and Keyaun Haenni, Ellington Hughes; and great nieces, Avia and Isla Hughes. Dolores was born on August 8, 1930 in Rulo, Nebraska to Charles E. and Alice (Bowhay) Frederick.

She was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church, Troy, Kansas. Dolores worked as a hotel clerk.

Dolores married Marion John Jackson on October 23, 1950. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1972.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Kathryn Ann Jackson in 1969, brother, Eddie Frederick and 3 grandchildren.

Kenneth was born on March 17, 1946 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Bert and Rosalie Simpson. He was drafted in 1966 and served in the United States Army until 1968. After returning to the states he entered the Steel Workers Union, and he also ran Ken Motors for years. He also worked for the St. Joseph School District from which he retired in 2005.

Delbert (Charlie) William Douglas Jr., 59, of Troy, Kansas passed away Saturday, June 27, 2020.

Delbert was born on February 15, 1961 in Kansas City, Missouri to Delbert William and Julia (Bloodgood) Douglas Sr.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1987 to 1990, spending nearly two years stationed overseas in Germany. Charlie (as he was affectionately known) loved the outdoors and you could always find him outside doing yard work or working on his next big project. He loved woodworking, gardening, fishing and pool. He was also one of the biggest Chiefs fans you’ll ever find.

Delbert was preceded in death by his father, Delbert William Douglas Sr., sister, Denise Zuniga, son, Blake Beerbower and step-father, Robert Gardner.

Survivors: Partner, Carolyn Snead, daughters, Crystal Douglas and Tara Douglas-Hillman, sons, Jake Douglas and Clint Douglas, Mother, Julia Gardner,

Norma Jean Armstrong, 93, formerly of Reserve, Kansas, passed away Thursday July 2, 2020 at the Medical Lodges Nursing Facility in Holton.

She was born July 12, 1926 in Louisburg, Kansas, one of four daughters born to Charles Simmonds and Hattie Marie Hansen. She grew up in Louisburg where she attended school.

Norma worked as a riveter in Kansas City during the war for a short time.

Norma married Merle V. “Buck” Armstrong, Sr on April 28, 1946 at Reserve. She was a stay at home mother, and it was very important to her to raise her family and take care of her husband. They lived in Topeka while Merle worked as an installer, and a lot of his work was with the AT&amp;T tower south of Fairview, Kansas. The family eventually moved to Reserve in 1962 to make their home and help take care of elderly parents. Buck died February 6, 2010.

Norma was a member of Highland Park United Methodist church while they lived in Topeka, Kansas.

Norma was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Merle Armstrong Jr., and two sisters Maxine and Thelma.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Armstrong (Terri), Aiken, South Carolina, Gary Armstrong (Betsy) Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister Charlene Fiedler (Dave) Holton; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. The family will meet one hour prior to the service.

Helen Hageman, passed away from cancer on July 3, 2020.

&nbsp;She is survived by her sister, Mary Schrader (Raymond), Topeka, KS, nephews:&nbsp; &nbsp;Ben Schrader (Lou Ann), Olathe, KS, Brian Schrader, Topeka, KS, and grand nieces Courtney and Michelle Schrader, Olathe, KS.

Helen was preceded in death by her younger sister, Nancy Hageman.

Helen was born Jan. 11, 1941 to her late parents, Ben and Florence (Hinton) Hageman. She grew up on a farm near White Cloud, Ks, and attended Robinson Rural High School. Helen graduated from Emporia State University in 1963. She taught at Hickok School in Ulysses, Ks. for 38 years. Lorraine A. Schlegel, 90, of Onaga, died Friday, July 3, 2020 at the Community Hospital in Onaga.

She was born May 30, 1930 on the farm at Delia, the daughter of Ross and Thelma Gilliland Houck. She graduated from Emmett High School.

Lorraine was a member of the First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga and the Onaga Saddle Club. She was an avid gardener and loved her chickens and redbirds.

She was a homemaker and farm wife, and she drove a truck with the best of them in the family’s trucking business.

Lorraine married M.B. “Merrill” Schlegel on June 19, 1948 at Holton. He died October 9, 2006.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Devin Schlegel.

Survivors include four sons, Jack Schlegel (Candy), Jerry Schlegel (Lois), and Jim Schlegel (Marla), all of Onaga, and Jay Schlegel (Brenda), Westmoreland; two brothers, Lindsey Houck, Delia and Lanny Houck, Blossom, TX; nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Leo Stanton “Stan” Hughes 75, of Saint Joseph, passed away Monday, June 29, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 15, 1945 in St. Joseph, to Leo and Jessie Hughes of Faucett Missouri. He graduated from Faucett High School, University of West Florida and Northwest Missouri State University.

He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1971 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Stan was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was very proud of his military service.

Stan was self-employed as the owner and operator of Stan Hughes Accounting &amp; Tax Practice for nearly 40 years. He prided himself on taking good care of his clients and enjoyed spending time with them. In his free time, Stan loved to go fishing, play golf and was a country music enthusiast.

Stan was preceded in death by his loving wife of 38 years, Joan Ellen Stuppy Hughes; father, Leo Francis Hughes; and mother, Jessie Stanton Hughes.

Survivors include: daughter Chelsea (Jide) Obinegbo; Riha Obinegbo his beloved granddaughter; Ashley Curry and countless loved ones.

Family will receive friends beginning at 12 p.m. Thursday July 9th, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith &amp; Sidenfaden Chapel.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Farewell services with military honors will follow at 2 p.m.&nbsp; Services will be livestreamed.

&nbsp;Mary Ellen Myers, 93, went to be with her Heavenly Father Sunday, July 5, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mary was born February 15, 1927 to Charles Nelson and Nell (Jones) Nelson in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She lived most of her childhood in Florence, South Carolina. She truly loved Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she later retired.

Mary was married to Major John C. Moak, Sr. and after his death married Major Milo Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and son, Randy Myers.

Left to cherish her memories are sons: Larry Moak (Mary Beth) of Houston, Texas; John Moak Jr. (Judy) of St. Joseph, Missouri; Greg Myers (Debbie) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Jim “Gordon” Myers (Brenda) of San Diego, California; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters, Elizabeth Bridges of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Florence Grimes of Columbia, South Carolina.

Mary was a professional Model and taught modeling. She was an avid golfer and won many tournaments as well as an avid bridge player and won master points over the years. Her hobby was painting. Mary enjoyed the past several years as a resident at Living Community in St. Joseph, Missouri.

&nbsp;Glenrose “Glenny” Steeb, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2020.

She was born October 12, 1927 in Wathena, Kansas to Frank and Myrtle (Young) Summers.

Glenny married Merrill Steeb April 28, 1949; he survives of the home. She attended Humbolt Elementary, Lafayette High School and St. Joseph Junior College.

Glenny was a member of Wyatt Park Christian Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle, walking, and bowling. Glenny was an avid antique collector and attended estate sales.

She and her husband traveled extensively to attend Marine reunions for years. They also traveled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Mexico and St. Croix.

Glenny was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard “Dick” Summers, and son-in-law, Kenny Bledsoe.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Merrill; daughters, Sally Thorp (John), Marilee Creason (Curt); grandchildren, Zale Bledsoe (Jess), Austin Bledsoe (April), Meghan Eliason (Blake), Jerra Creason; great-grandchildren, Lola Bledsoe, Harvey Bledsoe, Miles Bledsoe, Maggie Eliason, and Heather Eliason.

Fredrick G Burgess 84, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020 in a Saint Joseph, MO hospital. 

He was born February 16, 1936 in Maitland, MO, son of the late Martha and Glenn Burgess. He attended Maitland High School, and he married Darlene Reed on November 16, 1952 in Eureka Springs, AR. He worked as a Superintendent at Wonder Bread Bakeries in St. Joseph, Kansas City, and King Sooper Bakeries in Denver, Colorado. He enjoyed racing cars at local venues, watching NASCAR, woodworking (he could build anything), working in his yard and garden, and he loved horses, both breaking and training them with his son. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemason and a Christian. 

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Renee Beers, and brother, Kenneth Burgess. 

Survivors include: wife, Darlene Burgess of the home, sons, Jerry (Mary) Burgess and Gary (Kim) Burgess both of St. Joseph, daughters, Sherry (Joe) Dorzweiler, Branson, MO and Debra (Tony) Munson, Palm Harbor, FL, 12 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, a sister, Francis Taylor, Rockport, MO, and brother, Robert Burgess, Cole Camp, MO.

Gordon Vojta  1949 - 2020

&nbsp;On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at 4:30 P.M., following countless sets and numerous encores for adoring fans, Larry Buck gracefully exited the stage after a raucous ovation. 

He was 75 years old. He shook a few hands, signed a few autographs, and smiled at the ladies for the last time. He has taken the big show celestial, and the players who went before him are tuning up and are ready to jam. Larry was born November 2, 1944 in Oak, Missouri to Leo and Hazel (Heinz) Buck.

He married Margaret Chesney on December 30, 1965, and married Shirley Vann on September 27, 1997.

He was a 1962 Central High School graduate and matriculated at Central Methodist University. Larry was a realtor for Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Stein &amp; Summers Real Estate. He was also a former teacher, resort owner, event promoter, and owner/operator of The Sunset Grill. Larry’s life was defined by his love for performing and promoting live music. He was a storyteller, many of those stories (it turns out) are actually true. He never met a stranger. If you were his friend, you were his best friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Leo and Hazel; sister, Bonnie and her husband Harold.

Survivors include children, Mike, Lin and Jamie, bonus children Kent, Kevin, Theran, Chad and Christi, daughters-in-law Sara, Kathy, Valerie, Tammy and Angela; twenty-some grandchildren, and maybe a dozen great-grandchildren. We’ve lost count of the people he held dear, including many cousins, nieces and nephews; too many to account for so we didn’t even try. But he loved you all.

&nbsp;Doris Irene Allen 84, of Edcouch, TX passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at her home. 

She was born March 25, 1936 in St. Joseph, MO. daughter of the late Violet and Joseph Messa. She graduated from Convent of Sacred Heart high school. and married Clarence Allen in 1953. She was a former member of St. James Catholic Church. She worked with her husband as the owner operators of the Allen Ambulance service in Kansas City, KS. 

Doris was preceded in death by husband, Clarence Allen, her parents, brother, Benito Joseph Messa, sisters: Juanita Norris, Carol Hendrix, and Margaret Messa. 

Survivors include sons, Hal Allen, and Clarence Allen, Jr. both of Edcouch, TX, and sisters, Enos Sturgis, and Lena Hite.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 6, 2020, at 11:30 am at the St. James Catholic Church, Fr. Jonathan Davis Celebrant. Mildred "Orpha" Hecker, 91, of St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

She was born January 2, 1929 in Quitman, MO, daughter of the late Lola and Edward Winslow. She attended school in Quitman. She married Kenneth "Ken" Hecker, who precedes her in death. Orpha was a Homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting and working crossword puzzles. 

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth "Ken" Hecker, sons, Kenneth Hecker and Bill Hecker, 6 infant children, siblings, T.J. Winslow, Fred Edward Winslow, Leneta Williams, Terra Winslow, Matilda Winslow, Elva Lee Lawson, Freida Lawson, Alice Tingley. 

Survivors include children, Jimmie (Mel) Hecker of Faucett, MO, Carylon Hecker of St. Joseph and Arthur (Amy) Hecker of St. Joseph and a brother, John Winslow.

Steven Mark Petrovick 76, of Gower, Missouri passed away Wednesday July 1, 2020. 

He was born November 27, 1943 in St. Joseph, Missouri son of the late Anastasia "Nellie" &amp; Steve Petrovick. He graduated from Benton High School, and attended the University of Missouri Columbia, and graduated from Missouri Western State University. He served in the United States Army then worked for the City of St. Joseph as a Mechanical and Plumbing Inspector from November 1997 to his retirement in July 2015. He was a catholic and attended Mass at the Abbey of Our Lady of Ephesus, Gower, Missouri. 

Steven was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Tom Petrovick, Sr.. 

Survivors include: sister, Julie (Steve) Wall, Savannah, MO, brothers, Leo (Sue) Petrovick of Florida, and Jim Petrovick of Colorado, and sister in law, Jenny Petrovick of St. Joseph. 

He will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, there will be no services as per Steve's wishes.

She was born June 19, 1925 to Alfred C. Priebe and Mary Elizabeth Pfeiffer in St. Joseph, Missouri.

&nbsp;Janet Elizabeth (Priebe) Peters, 95, Liberty, Missouri, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2020. She was born June 19, 1925 to Alfred C. Priebe and Mary Elizabeth Pfeiffer in St. Joseph, Missouri. Janet married Charles A. Peters in 1967. They shared 4 years of marriage before his passing in 1971.She was an Oblate of the Catholic faith and loved to sing and volunteer with the Red Cross. She was multilingual and lived in many places like Washington DC, Berlin, Paris, and Maine. She traveled extensively worldwide. Janet graduated from Sacred Heart Convent then earned her bachelor’s degree in languages from Deschenne University before moving on to MU for her master’s in social work. She worked for the CIA from 1949 to 1966, then became a social worker for the state of Missouri in 1973 before retiring in 1993. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; siblings, Charles, Paul, Bernard, Vincent, Gray “Bitsy”, Virginia “Ginger”; and stepchildren, Charles Peters III and Carol Youngblood. Survivors include son, Craig Peters (Paula), of Liberty, Missouri; stepdaughter, Eleanor Morton (James) of Charleston, Missouri; grandchildren, Vincent, Christian, Cameron and Emily Peters; step grandchildren, Charles Peters, IV, Diane Peters Felix, Michelle Peters Johnson, Kevin Peters, Jennifer Peters Lindstrom, Dwayne Peters, Cynthia Youngblood Scarbrough, Saundra Youngblood, Paul Moreton, John Moreton and David Moreton; brother-in-law, Bill Guilford; sister-in-law, Geri Priebe; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
