

Kenneth E. Mann, 75, of Atchison KS died Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at the Atchison Hospital.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7:30 pm on Friday, September 18, 2020 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Strickland officiating. Private family interment of cremated remains will be in the Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until time of service on Friday, September 18th, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be given to the American Heart Association or the Diabetes Research and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Ken was born on February 16, 1945 in Mexico, MO the son of Raymond and Helen (Hisle) Mann. He graduated from Mexico High School MO in 1963. He served in the United States Air Force as an aircraft maintenance mechanic during Vietnam. He attended Pittsburgh State College and Auto Body and Collision School in Flint, MI. Ken taught Auto Body and Collision Repair for USD 409 at the Northeast Kansas Area Vo-tech School, Atchison for over 29 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and served as a volunteer for the Shannon Township Fire Department. He served as Girl Scout Volunteer and Leader, enjoyed traveling, trout fishing, taking family on trips and helped many people with auto body repair out of his home.

Survivors include three sons; Kenneth E. Mann, Jr., Leavenworth, KS, Kevin E. Mann, Atchison, KS and Kristopher E. Mann, Leavenworth, KS, his life partner, Patty Housh, Atchison, KS, eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Julie Mann, Platte City, MO, one niece, one nephew, four great nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews. His parents, and one brother, Howard R. Mann preceded him in death.

Ruth married Everett Francis Hubbard July 3, 1952. He survives of the home.

Don Walkup, 91, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2020.

He was born April 19, 1929 to Donald and Lillian (Robertson) Walkup.

Don served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He married the love of his life, Betty Harder on September 30, 1956; she survives of the home.

Don retired from the insurance industry in 1990.

He was a member of Francis Street First United Methodist Church for 60 years and served on the Administrative Board and Trustee Board. Don belonged to Lodge #189, A.F. &amp; A.M., Thirty-Second Degree Scottish Rite Mason, High-Twelve Club #49 and a member of the Silver &amp; Gold Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ray Walkup and sister, Wanda Engel.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Betty; son, Jeff Walkup (Joey Babay), Minneapolis, Minnesota; daughters, Jane Graves (Brad), St. Joseph, Missouri, Julie McIlroy (Mike), Lee’s Summit, Missouri;; grandchildren, Hailey Andrews (Dave), Tyler McIlroy (Katie), Melanie Cole (Matthew), all of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Knox, Jude, Wren, Juniper, extended family and friends.

We will miss his sense of humor and ability to make friends wherever he went.

Michael Paris, 77, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at a Highland, Kansas health care facility. 

He was born October 8, 1942 in New York, NY. He married Theresa Hoadley on December 10, 1998. Michael served in the U.S. Army and worked for Pepsi Bottling. He loved attending tractor pulls and taking road trips. He also enjoyed his time spent working on tractors and riding mowers. 

Michael was preceded in death by sister, Elise. 

Survivors include, wife, Theresa Paris of Atchison, KS, daughters, Nicole (Jeremy) Tackitt of Sparta, MO, and Michelle, and son Michael, step-children, LaVonne Cook, Ruthie McKinley and Billy McKinley, 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Michael has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. Inurnment with military honors to take place at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Jerry R. Wiedmaier, "J.W." to his friends passed away September 1, 2020, after a lengthy illness.&nbsp; He was born to Albert J. and Edna F. (Harmon) Wiedmaier on August 7, 1936.

After graduation from Christian Brothers High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force; becoming an aerial still photographer, stationed in Germany, New Mexico, and Nevada.&nbsp;

He then graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO, with a Bachelors in Accounting and Business Administration.&nbsp; Jerry worked for the Office of the Inspector General and the USDA as a certified internal auditor.

Jerry owned and operated Wiedmaier Truck Stop Inc. for 45 years as well as four Goodyear Stores.

He enjoyed Sunday gatherings with friends at the truck stop, and at the Lake of the Ozarks and Palm Desert, California, as well as hunting and fun times at deer camp with friends and family.&nbsp; He was a contributor and avid participant in Mizzou Athletics for many years. GO TIGERS!!!!

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Albert and Robert (Bob); sister Betty Gerstner;&nbsp; and son Michael.

Survivors include his wife Marsha; son David; six grandchildren, Dustin, Dalton, Aubree, Brooke, Emily, and Ian; sister Susan Collings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no services at this time.&nbsp; Celebration of Life services will be held at a later date.

Beatrice Lorene Miller, 101, Stewartsville, Missouri; returned to her heavenly home on September 5, 2020.&nbsp; Devotion to her family and firm belief in God supported her throughout her life and ultimately gave her peace.

Lorene was born to Ray and Nellie (Anderson) Good of Parnell, Missouri on March 17, 1919.&nbsp; The oldest of four girls, Lorene helped raise her sisters and was her daddy's helper on the farm.

In addition to homemaker and farmer's wife, Lorene worked at the Methodist Medical Center in St. Joseph for 10 years, and as a large animal veterinarian assistant, briefly ran a restaurant and likely wall-papered most of the houses in Union Star, Missouri.&nbsp; She loved her family, her flowers, gardening and Jesus Christ.

Lorene was preceded in death by her parents; sister, LaVeda Montgomery, husbands, Robert Hoskins, Claude W. Miller and Lee Lippincott; son, Ronald Miller daughter, Ramona Weiland and infant granddaughter, Debra Long.

Surivors daughter, Roberta Long, son, Richard Miller (Lori); sisters, LaFaye Newcomer (Leroy) and Loretta Smith (Harvey); eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and nineteen great-great grandchildren.

Richard Thurston, 53, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

He was born July 25, 1967 in Fort Hood, Texas to Boyd and Allie (Boykin) Thurston.

Richard attended McCarthy Baptist Church.

He enjoyed playing games, watching movies, comics, and spending time with his family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother; brother, James Graham.

Survivors include parents, Boyd and Helen Thurston; siblings, Sarah Henderson, Victoria Vice (Jay), Tammy Thurston, Scott Thurston (Joe), Valerie Thurston; numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas G. “Tom” Wilson, 74, St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with the Lord Sunday, September 6, 2020 surrounded by his family.

He was born February 1, 1946 to Farrell and Mary (Vandever) Wilson.

Tom graduated from Forest City High School in 1964. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict, where he was a dog handler to his dog, Rinney from 1964-1970.

He retired after 18 years as a lieutenant with the Missouri Department of Corrections.

He was an avid golfer, loved trains and enjoyed watching the Chiefs and Royals. Tom was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Barbara Killoren.

Survivors include his wife, Linda; children, Tommie Wilson (Jean), Jamie Wilson, Rob Wilson (Jenn), Rikki Wilson (Paul Bolin); stepsons, Paul and Jason Clark; 8 grandchildren, Kayla (Michael), Bret, Joseph, Michael, Logan, Baker, Trev, and Cylas; 4 great-grandchildren, Blaze, Mia, Keely, Dexter; and brother, Jim Wilson.

He was born October 11, 1941 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Pearl and Joseph Grom. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School and the St. Joseph Junior College. He retired from AGP after 25 years of service. John enjoyed Baseball, softball, horseshoes, and fishing, and he attended St. Joseph's Cathedral Catholic Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Karene Widener.

Willard A. Potter, 85, of Wathena, KS passed away Monday August 31, 2020 at the Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Savannah, Missouri.&nbsp; Prior to his residence at Shady Lawn, Willard resided in Wathena on Saratoga Rd for 40 years.&nbsp;

Willard was born January 21, 1935 in Robinson, Kansas to Norman A. and Velma V. (Titus) Potter.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Army and then worked as a welder for the Shamrock Company.&nbsp;

Dad loved the outdoors.&nbsp; He enjoyed Coon hunting, fishing and hill climbing.&nbsp; He also enjoyed training horses for people and watching his kids compete in horse competitions. Dad also loved tinkering in his shop along with keeping his yard in tip top shape.&nbsp; He will be greatly missed.&nbsp;

Willard was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kenny Potter, and sister, Norma Kirkpatrick.&nbsp;

He is survived by Daughter Therese (David) Field, Savanna, MO.&nbsp; Daughter Vickie (Chris) Abel, Shiocton, Wisconsin. Son: Stanley (Jeanine) Potter, Sulfur, Louisiana.&nbsp; He had 11 grandchildren that will greatly miss their Grandpa Potter. He also had 14 great grandchildren. Sisters Katherine Rice, Effingham, Kansas and Marylin (Gracie) Hansen, Lyndon, Kansas.&nbsp;

She was born August 9, 1924 in Highland, Kansas to Lowell and Ida Springer. Lowella married Clarence “Buzz” Nold June of 1946. He preceded her in death January 28, 1999. She was a member of Clair United Methodist Church. Lowella worked for the SJSD at Bessie Ellison as a cook after raising her family. She was employed there for 23 years, helping to provide meals for students at the elementary school. She enjoyed bowling, word search puzzles, but, most of all, spending time with her family.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother; and 2 sisters.

Survivors include daughters, Patty Hartenbower (Scooter), Pam Schrick (Jim); grandchildren, Cory Schrick (Mandee), Kyle Schrick (Dani), Jamie House (Chris), Nicole Messick; 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews

She was born September 6, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, daughter of the late Claryce &amp; Thomas Ridley. She was a homemaker who enjoyed playing cards, reading, crochet, and attending deaf clubs for many years with her family. She graduated from the school of the deaf in Fulton, MO, where she met her husband, Richard of 46 years. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Judy Ridley. 

Survivors include; husband, Richard Hixson of the home, daughters, Maureen White, Saint Joseph, MO, and Jane (Chris) Nelson, Kansas City, MO, 2 grandchildren: Caitlin Cross and Tyler White, 3 great grandchildren, three sisters, Lynn Kalm, Karen Ridley, and Gail Fisher. 

She will be cremated under the care and direction of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Madelyn "Maddie" Mae West, 28, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020 in St. Joseph. She was born February 1, 1992 in St. Joseph, daughter of Peggie and Marvin West. 

She attended 3 years at DeKalb High School and graduated from Benton High School, class of 2013. Maddie was a free spirited girl. She was artistic and enjoyed using her talents to craft, paint and decorate. 

She was preceded in death by mother, Peggie Diane West, paternal grandparents, James and Hazel West and maternal grandparents, Floyd "Jack" and Mildred Caselman. 

Survivors include, father, Marvin West of St Joseph, son, Cannon Kennedy Hollars, sister, Megan (Steven) Brace, nephews, Trayton Brace and, Trenton Brace, friend, Brian "Byrd" King and aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

Madelyn "Maddie" Mae West, 28, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020 in St. Joseph. She was born February 1, 1992 in St. Joseph, daughter of Peggie and Marvin West. She attended 3 years at DeKalb High School and graduated from Benton High School, class of 2013. Maddie was a free spirited girl. She was artistic and enjoyed using her talents to craft, paint and decorate. She was preceded in death by mother, Peggie Diane West, paternal grandparents, James and Hazel West and maternal grandparents, Floyd "Jack" and Mildred Caselman. Survivors include, father, Marvin West of St Joseph, son, Cannon Kennedy Hollars, sister, Megan (Steven) Brace, nephews, Trayton Brace and, Trenton Brace, friend, Brian "Byrd" King and aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Maureen I. (Swafford)(White) Asbell, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, August 31, 2020.

She was born January 3, 1944 to Thomas J., Sr. and Isabel M. (Kirwan) Swafford in St. Joseph, Missouri. Maureen married Ogden Dean White July 11, 1969. They shared 34 years together before his passing in 2003. Maureen married Bill Asbell March 13, 2014. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School in 1963. She was a computer operator at Mead Products. Maureen was a member of the Altar Society at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dean White; brother, Robert Swafford, and brother-in-law, Bob White.

Survivors include husband, Bill Asbell, son, Michael Yanczer (Patsy), brother Tom J. (Dina); sisters-in-law, Rosemary Swafford and Susan White; brother-in-law Paul White and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Frederick Michael “Mike” Westhoff, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020.

He was born September 21, 1949 to Frederick Sr. and Fern (Dryden) Westhoff in St. Joseph, Missouri. Mike worked at Rainbo Bakery for more than 20 years. He retired from Boehringer Ingelheim in 2015, having started in 1995. Mike was an avid fan and supporter of the St. Joseph Yankees. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and old money. Mike loved spending time with friends, fishing with his son and grandson, and going to concerts.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include son, David (Molly); Kim Westhoff; grandchildren, Alaina, Michael; Tieler Salmons; and beloved pets, Beavis and Fred.

Jimmie Dean Carter, 78, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born February 23, 1942 to Al and Ruby Carter in Waukomis, Oklahoma. Jimmie married Sue Joyce January 31, 1963. They shared 57 wonderful, loving years of marriage. He was in the Naval Reserve from 1958 to 1960, from 1960 to 1962 he served on the USS Shelton based out of Long Beach, California. Thereafter, he built, owned and operated Taco Bell franchises in St. Joseph and Platte City, Missouri; Lawrence and Emporia, Kansas; Spokane, Washington. Jimmie enjoyed relaxing while mowing. He was the ultimate practical joker. When he retired, he enjoyed spending time searching for the winning slot machines on the boats. He always thought of his family first and assured that they were all well taken care of. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He worshipped the ground his wife walked on. For him, it was love at first sight. He was always there to give a hand up to anyone he could help.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Betty Bagshaw (Lowell) and Barb Baker; brother, Dick Carter.

Survivors include wife Sue Carter, of the home; daughters, Laura Rogers, Cammie Hajek and Molly Ann Powers (William Richard Powers III); grandchildren, Chelsea Bolek (David), Brandea Rogers, Gage Herrington (Samantha), Madison Herrington, Cooper Herrington, Elijah Carter, Holden Powers, Gabriella Herrington; great grandchildren, Petra, Ben, Sylvia and Ellie Bolek and Parker Herrington; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was born April 17, 1935 to Floyd and Zanna (Moulten) Combs in Columbia, South Carolina. John served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 and the US Coast Guard from 1957 to 1961. He was a member of Winnetonka Baptist Church. John volunteered at Second Harvest Food Bank. He worked in shipping for Rhone-Poulence. John was also a security guard in Las Vegas. He worked maintenance at Noyes Home for Children. John enjoyed fishing, hunting and frogging.

He was preceded in death by his parents; great grandsons, Ethan Swett, Alex Swett; brothers, Eugene Combs, Bob Combs; sisters, Annie Gutknecht, and Helen Reynolds.

Survivors include his children, Susan Knotts (William), West Monroe, Louisiana, Charles J. Combs (Marcie), St. Joseph, Missouri, Tim Combs (Ilona), St. Joseph, Missouri, Ramona Martin (Greg), Amazonia, Missouri, Jack Combs (Tim), Topeka, Kansas, Matthew Combs, St. Joseph, Missouri; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson, and sister, Carolee Rose Simmons (Bill).
