Eugene Dwight Johnson, St. Joseph, Mo., died July 5, 2021, at Mosaic Medical Center. He was 83.

Gene and his wife, Joy (Burch) Johnson, were together 65 years. They were married June 2, 1957, in Superior, and they had just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Johnson was a coach and teacher for 41 years. He coached and taught business, typing and physical education at Esbon (Kan.) High School from 1959-60 to 1962-63, at Republic (Kan.) High School from 1963-64 to 1965-66, at Lebanon (Kan.) High School from 1966-67 to 1980-81, and at Hillcrest High and Junior High School, Cuba, Kan., from 1981-82 to 2001-02.

Through four decades, he coached basketball, track, cross country and football, and his high-school boys basketball teams were consistent contenders. His Lebanon teams won a string of Pike Trail League and district championships. They were Kansas class 1A state champions in 1977 and runners up in 1973. His Republic boys track team won the state indoor title in 1965. He was a member of Kansas National Education Association, and he was honored by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association.

On weekends and summers, he and his family farmed and irrigated corn, soybeans and milo in Republic and Jewell counties in Kansas, near Republic, Courtland and Lovewell. In retirement, Gene and Joy were campsite hosts for seven seasons at Lovewell (Kan.) State Park, in northeast Jewell County, and they lived in Superior, Neb., before moving to St. Joseph. In Superior, he was a deacon at the First Baptist Church. An avid fan of University of Kansas basketball and University of Nebraska football, he attended his first KU game at Allen Fieldhouse with his grandsons when he was 80. In retirement, he grew tomatoes and shared hundreds of them with neighbors, friends and new acquaintances. He was born in rural Cloud County, Kansas, near Sulphur Springs, on Nov. 11, 1937. His parents, Harold and Mary Johnson, were also teachers and farmers, and Gene attended schools in Harlan, Scottsville, Ionia and Lovewell, Kan., with summers on farms near Miltonvale and Courtland, Kan. He graduated from Lovewell High School in 1955, Fairbury (Neb.) Junior College in 1957 and McPherson (Kan.) College in 1959.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Johnson, in 1981, and mother, Mary (Ming) Johnson, in 1995, rural Courtland, Kan.; his brother, Marion, Belleville, Kan., in 2019; and an infant son, Bradley, in 1959.

Johnson is survived by his wife, Joy; son, Ron (Barry Hall), and daughter, Cyndi (John DeBey), rural St. Joseph; by grandchildren Nate, Nick and Greg Johnson and Andrew (Randi) and Amanda DeBey; by great-grandchildren Samantha and Gage DeBey; by sister-in-law Kathy (Konovalsky) Johnson, Belleville, and nephews Bryan and Whitney (Shelley).

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Neb., followed by a reception at the Vestey Center, downtown Superior. Pastor Deb Hadachek, Cuba, Kan., will officiate the service. Services under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home &amp; Crematory.

Janice B. Waltemath, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021.

She was born August 9, 1950 to John F. and Margaret (Giesken) Waltemath at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri.

Janice was a graduate from Albany R-111 High School in 1968; Missouri Western in 1973 with a BA in Political Science and UMKC in 1976 with a MA in Political Science.

She was a member of the League of Women Voters and was a lector and eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral since 1976.

Janice enjoyed playing all card games, reading books, and nature.

She worked for the Division of Family Services from November 1976 until her retirement in September of 2003.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents in 1973 and 1978; brother, Phillip in 2007; nephew, Jason Waltemath in 2015; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Survivors include nieces and nephews in Oklahoma; cousins, friends, and her cats.

Roy Eugene Hartley, 63, Of Hiawatha, KS, passed away peacefully Friday evening, July 2, 2021 In Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; He was lovingly surrounded by his 4 daughters, Stephanie, Monique, Sarah, and Adrianna.

Roy Eugene was born in Hiawatha, KS, December 2, 1957 to parents Lawrence and Helen (Halstead) Hartley.&nbsp; He was the fourth born child of seven children the parents had together. He grew up in the Hiawatha, Sabetha, Hamlin, and Morrill area, graduating from Sabetha High School in 1975. He was a rambunctious and ornery teenager most known for tearing up the streets of Morrill with his brothers, Gary, Bob, and Randy speeding around in their muscle cars.&nbsp; After school years and playground days, Roy worked at a dairy east of Morrill and several factories until finding his passion in construction for 40+ years.&nbsp; He became the owner/operator of his own contracting company, Roy Hartley Construction, from which he retired in 2018.&nbsp; Roy and his (late) wife Paula owned many rental properties around Hiawatha and took care of them together over the last 18 years.

Roy married Paula Schuetz in Hiawatha, KS, on August 21, 1999 in the presence of their children, parents, and friends in a private ceremony at the Hiawatha Lake.&nbsp; Paula was the salt to Roy’s pepper, the shimmy to his shake, and the only one who could honestly say they knew every nook and cranny of every aspect of him.&nbsp; They were two peas in a pod and as Roy would put it, “Paula was my one, my person, my soulmate!”&nbsp; They had a great love!

Roy participated in many things throughout his life.&nbsp; He helped start the soapbox derby races with the kids many years ago (his was even the one to beat for many years!), participated and ran the local pool league and dart league for many years, and enjoyed a good karaoke night at the Old Jayhawk Tavern!!&nbsp; In later years he found a love for antique furniture, woodworking craftsmanship, stoneware, and antique strollers.&nbsp; In recent years he came back to his love of classic cars from his younger years and shared that love with his brother Bob on regular nightly calls, photos, and playful competitions.

Roy is survived by 4 daughters: Stephanie Hartley of Hiawatha, KS; Monique and Richard Swimm of Hiawatha, KS; Sarah and Travis Cormier of Wetmore, KS; and Adrianna and Joel Havens of Silver Lake, KS; 2 sisters: Sharon Bestwick of Fairview, KS and Betty and Carl Clements of Kansas City, KS; 3 brothers:&nbsp; Gary and Sandy Hartley of Morrill, KS; Bob and Peggy Hartley of Branson, MO; and Randy Hartley of Fairview, KS.&nbsp; He is also survived by 10 grandchildren:&nbsp; Hailey (24), Preston (21), Taylor (17), Blake (13), Desiree (3), Austin (18), Layla (12), Will (11), Jude (6), and Otto (3).&nbsp; He is also survived by an aunt, Ethel Allen of Seneca, KS and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

Lois M. Ackerman, 74, of Netawaka, passed away on Friday, July 2, 2021 at the University of Kansas Health System, St. Francis Campus, in Topeka.

She was born November 5, 1946 in Topeka, the daughter of Marion and Pearl Spiker Christy. She graduated from Goff High School in 1965.

Lois worked as a nurse’s aide at Merry Manor Nursing Home in Holton, and at various other nursing homes.

She married Delbert Ackerman on September 14, 1979 at Hiawatha. He survives, of the home.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, John Fulkerson, and a sister, Virginia Fulkerson.

Other survivors include a daughter, Waneta Ackerman, Netawaka; three brothers, Russell Fulkerson and Marvin Fulkerson, both of Goff, and Daniel Fulkerson, Holton; one sister, Janet Fulkerson, Topeka; her life long friend, Fay Downie, Marysville; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Aalayah Ackerman.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 8th at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in the Netawaka Cemetery. Lois will lie in state after noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Visitaton will be from 9:30 until service time on Thursday. Jerome E. Nimz, 80, of Hiawatha, passed away on July 4, 2021 in Highland, Kansas.

Graveside funeral services will be held at Denton Cemetery on Saturday July 10, 2021 at 10 am with Reverend Jerry Petering, of Denton United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.

Jerome was born in Horton, Kansas to Charles and Elizabeth (Denton) Nimz on July 14, 1940. Jerome attended school in Denton, Kansas and graduated with the class of 1958. He married Sharon Sexton on June 28, 1963 at the Denton Methodist Church. Although later getting divorced, Jerome and Sharon remained very close and attended many family gatherings together. After graduation, Jerome enlisted with the 2 BN, 130th&nbsp;FA, Kansas Army National Guard of Troy, for seven years. He worked for CO-OP in Leona and Robinson, retiring as the Grain Elevator Manager after 40 years. Jerome was involved in Smithton Lodge #1, AF&amp;AM of Highland, Blue Lodge and was active member in the Leona Sportsman Club. He was a member of the Bellevue Methodist Church in Leona.

Jerome is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Nimz, Jr. (brother) and spouse.

Jerome is survived by Rebecca Nimz (Jeff Adkins), James Nimz (Rose Trainer) and Michelle Gepford (David); 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Nimz, 80, of Hiawatha, passed away on July 4, 2021 in Highland, Kansas.Graveside funeral services will be held at Denton Cemetery on Saturday July 10, 2021 at 10 am with Reverend Jerry Petering, of Denton United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.Jerome was born in Horton, Kansas to Charles and Elizabeth (Denton) Nimz on July 14, 1940. Jerome attended school in Denton, Kansas and graduated with the class of 1958. He married Sharon Sexton on June 28, 1963 at the Denton Methodist Church. Although later getting divorced, Jerome and Sharon remained very close and attended many family gatherings together. After graduation, Jerome enlisted with the 2 BN, 130th&nbsp;FA, Kansas Army National Guard of Troy, for seven years. He worked for CO-OP in Leona and Robinson, retiring as the Grain Elevator Manager after 40 years. Jerome was involved in Smithton Lodge #1, AF&amp;AM of Highland, Blue Lodge and was active member in the Leona Sportsman Club. Eleanor Flora (Christensen) Mumford, 94, went to be with the Lord, peacefully in her sleep, Tuesday, June 29, 2021. She will be remembered as a daughter, sister, mother, Granny, and friend to all who knew her. Eleanor was born on June 20, 1927 in St. Joseph, Missouri to her parents, Thomas E. and Viola M. (O’Dell) Christensen. She grew up in a loving family with five brothers and two sisters in St. Joseph, Missouri. Eleanor acquired her license in Cosmetology, after finishing school. She married Lloyd Horn and they were blessed with three children; Kathleen Gail (Horn) McMullin, Nancy Denise (Horn) Waggoner and Stephen Jay Horn, all born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri. She later married Richard Mumford and moved to Faucett, Missouri where they resided and retired on a tobacco farm. Eleanor worked for 37 years and retired from Seitz.

Eleanor enjoyed boating, shopping, missionary work, attending church, traveling the world and spending time with her family. She deeply loved her children and her grand and great grandchildren.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; five brothers; her husband, Richard Mumford; son, Stephen Jay Horn; and great-grandson, Alec Braden Rush.

Mary Jane Fleenor, 88, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2021 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was a loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was born April 30, 1933 in Topeka, Kansas to her parents, John Laurence and Hulda Christina (Johnson) Johnson. Mary Jane attended Sumner Elementary, Roosevelt Jr. High, and graduated from Topeka High School. After graduating from high school, she worked at Topeka Sate Bank.

During this time, she married her husband, Jake, and they shared 53 years of marriage. Together they owned and operated Fleenor Plumbing &amp; Heating for 48 years. She raised her family in the home and eventually worked and retired from the Shawnee County Election Office.

She attended and was baptized in the church her family attended. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for 83 years. During that time she served on many committees and taught Sunday School. She also served on the Topeka North Outreach and helped they youth of 4-H.

She married Jacob C. Fleenor Sept. 22, 1956 at the First United Methodist Church Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 27, 2009. She was also preceded in death by a son, John J. Fleenor; her parents; 5 sisters, Lucille Schmidt, Harriet Horvath, Francis Noble, Ruth Coffindaffer and Betty Davis; and 2 brothers, Eugene and Harold (Jack) Johnson.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Claudia Smith, Topeka, Kansas, Tamela Sabbert-Mayes (Scott), Olathe, Kansas, and Rebecca Weber, St. Joseph, Missouri, and one daughter-in-law, Virginia Fleenor, of Topeka, Kansas. She loved and spoke often of her 10 grandchildren, Laura, Leana, Jay, Aaron, Allen, Caitlyn, Conner, Trinity, Landon, and Joseph. She was proud of her 10 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Her services will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church Chapel in Topeka, Kansas. Leonard Louie Leimbach, 85 of St. Joseph, passed away July 3, 2021.

He was born on May 7, 1936 in Clinton County, Missouri to John and Irma Leimbach.&nbsp; Leonard grew up on a farm where he was raised as one of nine brothers and sisters.&nbsp; He attended Plattsburg High School and was very active in sports before enlisting in the Air Force where he served from 1956 to 1960 and was stationed in Korea and Ft. Worth.

Leonard then married Glenda Roy on January, 23, 1960 in Ft. Worth, TX.&nbsp; They then started a family with oldest daughter Vicki, son John, and youngest daughter Karen.

He started a career in electronics working at General Dynamics in Ft. Worth TX, on Atlas missiles in Lincoln NE, the Space Program in Decatur AL, and Bell Helicopter in Texas before ultimately joining TWA.&nbsp; Leonard retired from TWA after 34 years in 1996.

Leonard enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, playing cards and being an avid and accomplished golfer.&nbsp; Above all, he cherished his 61 years married to the love of his life Glenda and spending time with his family and was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Glenda; children Vicki (Greg) Finch, John (Michelle) Leimbach, Karen (Curtis) Coble; grandchildren Jamie (Matt) Svoboda, Derek Bloxom, Phillip Leimbach, Cole (Carsyn) Leimbach, Kasey Coble, Kylee (Brandon) Ward, Courtney Coble; great grandchildren Evelynne, Margaret and Leonard Svoboda, Campbell Ward and McCoy Leimbach.

Siblings include: Robert Leimbach, JC Leimbach, Carrie Psyhogios, Helen Zech, Barbara (Ed) Coon, David (Diane) Leimbach, Donna Johnson and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; Preceeded in death by his parents John and Irma Leimbach and brother Charles Leimbach.

Catherine Elaine Rosenthal, 80, St Joseph, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 3, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in St. Joseph, she graduated from Benton High School in 1958. Not long after, she began her lifelong career at Stevens Hats, and that is where she met her husband, Robert. She retired from Stetson Hat Company in 1986, and she and Robert celebrated their 57th anniversary on June 27, 2021.

A member of Temple Adath Joseph, she was an avid bowler and book lover. She could often be found in the kitchen drinking coffee, reading and imparting her wisdom. Perhaps the best way to describe her is to share the words her family and friends have used about her in the past few days: beautiful, loving, wise, a straight shooter, easy to talk to, funny, stylish and fiercely proud, especially of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The last few months of her life were made exponentially better by the love and care of her caregivers Sandy, Tammy and Kim. She also looked forward to visits from Sarah, Laura and Cynthia, Mosaic Hospice. They always included excellent care, good conversation and usually coffee cake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and William Fred Cox.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, of the home; sister, Margaret St. John, Keene, NH; daughters, Maggie Ross (Chuck Slapper), Lansing, KS; and Dana Campbell (Brian), Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Brad Staples (Kendal); Zachary Ross; Josh Campbell and Samantha Campbell; great-grandsons Clayton and Reed; and many loving family members and friends.

Chris Artherton, 64, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

He was born July 19, 1956 in Lexington, Kentucky to Roy and Margaret (Crudden) Artherton.

Chris was a member of Christ Church of St. Joseph during his younger years and graduated from Central High School in 1974.

Chris traveled the United States, settled in Kansas City, and returned to St. Joseph to help his parents.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Patrick “Pat” David Marks Dunlap, 55, Easton, Missouri, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 1, 2021.

He was born April 6, 1966 in North Kansas City, Missouri to William Clouser Dunlap, Sr. and Averil Janette (Tyer) Dunlap.

He married the love of his life, Rose Marie White, on November 22, 1997. She survives of the home.

Pat loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a faithful member of Eastside Baptist Church. He was a devoted and loving family man, who enjoyed working on the farm and spending time with his family. He was a friend to everyone.

He also was a dedicated public servant, having worked for the Missouri Department of Corrections for 27 years and serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include wife, Rose; daughter, Kelsey Dunlap; brothers, William Dunlap (Annette), and Timothy Dunlap (Connie); sister, Brenda Roller (Greg); sister- and brother-in-law, Don and Debbie Gregory; mother-in-law, Rose White; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.

Doris Coleen Sutton, 92, of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021 at the Atchison Senior Village. Doris was born January 20, 1929 in Cummings, KS. She was the third born to Newell C. Higley and Nellie Mabel Leland Higley. Doris attended Atchison County Community High School graduating in 1946 at age of seventeen. Following graduation, Doris was employed with State of Kansas in Topeka, KS from 1946 to 1951. She was a clerk in the Atchison Treasurers Office for two years, secretary at the Bellevue Grade School for four years and was secretary at the Northeast Kansas Vocational School for three years. She had many hobbies. She loved to quilt, making quilts for each of her five grandchildren. Genealogy was ongoing and she was inspired to write the “Leland Book” in 2001. Traveling to foreign countries following her husband’s retirement was a dream of their lifetime. They spent many winters in Mesa, AZ enjoying the climate and newfound friends. They enjoyed hiking the mountains of AZ, and especially the Grand Canyon. Square dancing was another pleasurable pastime. Doris was a member of the Parallel Unit, Project Concern, Genealogy Association of Atchison, the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary for over twenty years, the Martha Washington Chapter #215 Order of Eastern Star for over twenty-five years, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and Friends of the Library. She and Floyd J. Sutton were united in marriage on October 10, 1948 in Topeka, KS. Doris and Floyd moved to Atchison in 1955. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2020. She became active in the community, lending support to Cub Scout and Boy Scouts activities. She was a active member of First Christian Church of Atchison, served as church librarian for over twenty years. She served on the Official Church Board as a Deaconess and a member of the CWF of the church. Survivors include two sons Gary and Mary Jo Sutton, Topeka, KS and Jeffrey and Judy Sutton, Cedar Falls, IA, a brother, Edward Higley, Muscotah, KS, five grandchildren Ashley Everett, Dustin (Jessica) Sutton, Courtney (Josh) Marchbank, Amelia and Clarissa Sutton, nine great grandchildren, Cullen, Finn, Patrick and Breccan McCaffery, Teagan and Kellan, Maeve Marchbank, and Izabella and Milan Sutton. Steven Edward Horine 69, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, June 18, 2021 at his home. 

He was born October 10, 1951 in St. Joseph, Missouri, son of the late Patsy &amp; Paul Horine. He attended Benton High School. He had numerous hobbies, loved electronics and had a passion for anything remote controlled. He would build and meticulously assemble remote controlled cars, model airplanes and model railroads. He enjoyed shooting pool and loved music. 

Steven was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Curtis Horine. 

Survivors include: step daughter, Becky Brock and husband Patrick, and grandson, Will of Lenexa, KS, brother, Michael Horine and wife Theresa Prudden, and nephew, Chris Prudden of Saint Joseph, MO, and his former ex, Annette Obermier of Lenexa, KS.

Norman Edwin Johnson, 76, Savannah, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

He was born March 9, 1945 to Lehman and Jewel (Etheridge) Johnson in Stanberry, Missouri.

On April 11, 1969, he married Wilma Jenkins, she survives of the home. Norman was a US Marine. He worked at Seitz Foods for 40 years. He enjoyed farming, animals and anything outdoors. Norman will be remembered as a truly giving person. He was a hard worker and would do anything for anybody.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Allen Johnson.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Wilma; sons, Jeff (Michelle) and Shane (Traci) Johnson; grandchildren, Jordan Sumdaram, Alexander and Kilan Johnson; sisters, Georgia Mae Lewis, Rena Hazelwood, June Cline; and brother, David Johnson.

Marsha Lynn Farrell, 73, of Halls, Missouri, passed away peacefully at her home, Thursday, July 1, 2021, surrounded by family and Three Rivers Hospice. 

She was born January, 31, 1948, daughter of Francis Galloway Hatfield. Marsha worked at Galloway's Symposium, the post office in Rushville along with being a cook at the elementary school in Rushville. She grew up in the south side of St Joseph. She never ventured too far, with the exception of a 2 year stint in Ketchikan, Alaska. Marsha was married to Ed Christgen for 4 years. This union brought forth 2 sons. In 1976, she married her husband of 40 years, John Farrell, having 2 more children. 

Marsha was preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 2017 and her son, Lee Farrell. 

She is survived by her 6 children, Brian and Chris (Tammy) Christgen, Jesse (Crystal) Farrell, Amanda Farrell (Cody Sawyer), Teresa Farrell and Stephanie Farrell, sister and life long friend, Susie Brown, 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family and friends.

Ms. Farrell has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Missouri Valley Baptist Church. Jerry Jon Anderson passed away at the University of Colorado Hospital
 -&nbsp;Anschutz&nbsp;Medical Campus on&nbsp;May 26, 2020. He&nbsp;was born in Atchison, 
Kansas on November 5, 1958 to Faye Ellen Anderson and Carol N. (Andy) 
Anderson. He is survived by his life partner of 19 years, Bennie Young 
of Broomfield, Colorado, daughter Jackie Batchelor, son Ben Young 
(Katie) and his beloved granddaughter Violet.&nbsp;

He is also survived by siblings Mark (Susan; Bellevue, WA), Chuck 
(Naples, FL), and Kristin (Garden City, KS), his nephews Matt, Chris, 
Zach, and Grant,&nbsp;and was preceded in death by his father and his special
 brother Nils Eric. He was succeeded in death by his mother.

Jerry attended Garden City High School, Garden City Community 
College, and Kansas State University, where he earned 
a&nbsp;Computer&nbsp;Engineering degree and a lifelong devotion to his K-State 
Wildcats. His career in network engineering and management stretched 
from KSU to Lincoln, NE to Chicago to Denver to Silicon Valley. He 
excelled at problem-solving and communications, with customers, peers, 
and management and he loved to share knowledge and learn new things.&nbsp;

Jerry was a brilliant, articulate, personable, fun-loving, 
bigger-than-life, never-knew-a-stranger, heart-of-gold guy, who will be 
sorely missed by all who knew him.&nbsp; He and Bennie relished having family
 and friends come and stay at their home in Broomfield and showing off 
his majestic Rocky Mountains. &nbsp;His neighbors will miss his mad 
snow-blowing skills in the winter.&nbsp;

He was given the gift of a new liver on February 27, 2020 and fought 
hard to recover from the transplant, struggling with rejection and the 
ups and downs of secondary complications. Just as it seemed he was 
gaining ground his heart of gold gave out.&nbsp;

The memorial service for Nils, Jerry, and Faye Ellen Anderson will be
 held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at 2 pm at First United Methodist 
Church in Garden City, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested in lieu of flowers to the University of Colorado Hospital&nbsp;Foundation.&nbsp;

Nils E. Anderson, age 63, died at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden 
City, Kansas on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.&nbsp; He was born on February 18, 
1957 in Atchison, KS,&nbsp; the son of Carol Nelson and Faye Ellen Beisner 
Anderson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nils attended Russell and Garden City Schools.&nbsp; He was a member of 
the Methodist Church. He worked at Garden City Community College as the 
head dishwasher for 25 years.&nbsp; Nils was a member of the Happy Valentines
 4-H Club, the Special Olympics, Boy Scouts, and attended&nbsp; summer camp 
many summers at Camp White of Council Grove, Kansas.&nbsp; He enjoyed 
bowling, watching movies, walking the Talley Trail, swimming in the Big 
Pool, Lee Richardson Zoo, and attending Garden City Community College 
athletic events.&nbsp; He also loved singing, listening to and conducting 
music and going to the Kwik Shop for his daily pop.&nbsp; He loved to eat out
 - especially the Pizza Hut.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Survivors include siblings Mark Anderson (Susan) of Bellevue, 
Washington, Chuck Anderson of Naples, Florida, Kristin Anderson of 
Garden City, Kansas and nephews Matt Anderson of San Francisco, 
California, Chris Anderson and Grant Anderson of Chicago, Illinois, and 
Zach Anderson of Garden City, Kansas; also special aunt Lou and uncle 
Rod Hoover of Topeka, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his father, and succeeded in death by his
 brother Jerry Anderson (Bennie Young) of Broomfield, CO and his mother.

William L. Edds passed away on June 28, 2021 in Topeka.

Bill was born on August 13, 1947 in Horton, KS and grew up in Hiawatha, KS. Bill was the loving husband to Mary Edds.&nbsp; Bill and Mary were high school sweethearts and they shared an incredible life together which revolved around their son, Geoffrey Edds, daughter in-law Meghan Edds and grandkids Samantha, Griffin and Gannon.

&nbsp;Bill loved and missed his parents Albert and Thelma Edds every day. Bill has one sister who he loved so much, Marjorie Schrader of Billings, MT. Bill loved his in-laws, Harlan and Betty Buehler and sister-in-law’s, Barbara Mitchel and Janet Mendez. Bill had many nieces and nephews that meant the world to him. Bill was a KU and Washburn Law graduate. Bill was an accomplished attorney.

&nbsp;He worked for the State of Kansas his entire career. After his retirement he helped so many with free legal and income tax services. Bill loved life! Sports, Music, The Beatles and Guster were his jam. Bill was a world traveler, loved to read, worked out every day and was a heck of an athlete in his day, the self-proclaimed RBI leader for his longtime ball team, Brosius and Slattery.

His softball buddies turned in to family for Bill, Mary and Geoff. So many Bill stories and memories.. Bill was known to go after a foul ball and come back to the dugout with a six-pack of Bud. True story! Rebel, life of the party, friend to all, intelligent, that was Bill. Everyone loved Bill and he loved all. We are sad to say goodbye to this man, but we find peace knowing he is now our guardian angel in heaven. This is what he was best at, taking care of his family.

There will be no funeral service so please grab your favorite beverage and raise a toast to Bill Edds.

Betty June Helton, 83, of Easton, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. 

She was born December 26, 1937 in St. Joseph, daughter of Mary and Leroy Filley. Betty attended Lafayette High School. She married Richard Helton on January 11, 1969. Betty enjoyed bowling, going to the casino, traveling and most of all, being with her family. She was an animal lover and was very giving, always putting others first. 

Betty was preceded in death her parents, son, Roy Walker , Jr. and sisters, Mary, Patricia and Dorothy. 

Survivors include, husband, Richard Helton, Sr. of the home, children, Richard Helton, Jr. of St. Joseph, Shelly (Tony) Trauernicht of St. Joseph, Rhonda Walker of Helena, MO, Brian Walker of Binghamton, NY and Eric Walker of St. Joseph, and 8 grandchildren.

Betty has been cremated under the care of Rupp Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at Rupp Funeral Home. Pastor Jeff Pickerel officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday at Rupp Funeral Home. James William Arthur “Jim” Simerly, 50, of Savannah, Missouri passed away Monday, June 28, 2021.&nbsp;

Jim was born on April 22, 1971 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Glenda (Abbett) Simerly.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Christ Church of St. Joseph, Missouri.&nbsp;

Jim married Lisa Morey on September 16, 1995 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She survives of the home.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his mother, Glenda Simerly, grandparents, Bill and Francis Abbett and uncle, Ronnie Abbett.&nbsp;

Additional survivors: daughters, Hannah and Grace Simerly.&nbsp;

Avery Charles Steward, 29, of Hiawatha passed away too soon on Sunday morning June 27, 2021. Avery was born June 2, 1992 at Sabetha Community Hospital, the youngest son of Milton &amp; Roberta (Grier) Steward. Avery lived most of his life in Hiawatha, KS while attending schools, graduating High School in the class of 2010. While in school, Avery participated in choir, track &amp; field, and was part of a bowling league for many years. He was elected the Prom King his senior year. After HS he went on to Coffeyville Community College where he spent a year on the football team. Avery had such a beautiful &amp; nurturing soul, he always felt like he needed to help others before helping himself. He enjoyed being with family, spending time with a host of friends, loved to share his beautiful voice through song, and was always ready to jam out with family &amp; friends by playing the drums at church and other locations. He felt the best way to express oneself was through the gift of music. Avery had a smile that would light up a room, and the ability to make anyone laugh until their sides hurt. The life of Avery will forever be cherished by a countless amount of loved ones. Surviving are his parents, Milton &amp; Roberta of Hiawatha, a brother DeRon Steward of Hiawatha &amp; sister Sara (Phil) Roberts of Baileyville, KS. 4 nieces &amp; 1 nephew: Ciera (Ben) Hastings of Mesquite, TX, Sophia &amp; Skylar Steward of Hiawatha, Cecilia &amp; Houston Roberts of Baileyville, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charles &amp; Louanna (Sanders) Grier, paternal grandparents Harry &amp; Rose (Logan) Stevens, as well as his older brother Sean Steward. A celebration of Avery’s life will be held Friday morning at 11:00 AM at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Malcolm Grier officiating. Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to gather for lunch afterwards at the Eternal Hope Life Center in Hiawatha.
