Shirley “Sami” (Hamilton) Goetz, 79, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Saturday October 23, 2021 at a local health care facility.

She was born July 17, 1942, in Maryville, MO. She is the daughter of Clifford and Pauline Hamilton of Clearmont, MO.

Shirley is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University. While there she earned a degree in elementary education. She went on to teach in the Saint Joseph School District.

While she was working for the Saint Joseph School District, she met the love of her life Mike Goetz. They married on June 25, 1966 and spent the next 52 years together.

Shirley’s hobbies were reading and crafting.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Goetz, and parents, Clifford and Pauline Hamilton.

She is survived by her children, Michael Goetz IV (Christina), James P. Goetz (Carol), her in-laws Richard and Mignon Deshon, and her grandchildren Jordyn, Michael, Alison, Hudson, and Neva.

William "Bill" J. Gatton Jr. 79, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 at his home. 

He was born November 21, 1941 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Minnie and William Gatton Sr. He attended St. Johns Seminary in Kansas City, MO. Then worked at Continental Can Corporation, retired from Quaker Oats, and retired from the St. Joseph School District. Bill volunteered for several years at the Red Cross and for the St. Joseph Police Department. His passion was woodworking. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Andy and Frank Gatton. 

Survivors include, wife, Sandy L. Gatton of the home, son, Terry (Lori) Monger, St. Joseph, MO, daughters, Kelly (Bob) Dynes, St. Joseph, Joel Gatton, Paola, KS, and Shannon Gatton, St. Joseph, MO, three grandchildren: Hannah, Rylee, and Josh, two great grandchildren: Aubree and Gunner, sisters, Patricia Shipley, Mary Hosey, Sue Mollus, and Teresa Miller.

Tracy Allen Ferguson, 48, of Iola, Kansas, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2021 at his home in Iola. 

He was born January 30, 1973 in St. Joseph, son of Donna and Millard Ferguson Sr. Tracy worked at several area bars as security and a bartender. He enjoyed going to the casino, and spending time with his family. 

Tracy was preceded in death by his parents. 

Survivors include: daughter, Courtney (Dylan) Kuehne of Washington, DC, siblings, Stacey Johnson of Iola, KS, Millard Ferguson, Jr. of Iola, KS, and Sharon "Kay" McClain of St. Joseph, and 4 granddaughters.

She was born March 7, 1941 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Virginia and Harley Spillman. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1959, and she retired from the City of St. Joseph as a Parking Lot Cashier. She then worked as a lunch room lady for the St. Joseph School District. She enjoyed the casino, playing cards, doing yard work, and Diane was a member of RLDS. 

Diane was preceded in death by her husband, James Wright, her parents, and a son, Wesley Nigh, Jr. 

Survivors include: daughter, Kelley Smyth, St. Joseph, MO, grandchildren: Christopher Wesley Nigh, Cruise Smyth, and Daytona Smyth, great granddaughter, Callie Nigh, sisters, Harlene (J.P.) Pankau, Connie (Dick) Smothers, and Shirley (Larry) Herring all of St. Joseph, MO.

Cheryl Rachel Mendenhall, 56, passed away on October 11, 2021, at 
Azria Health after being a special part of Rosewood Services since 
2005.&nbsp; She was born on September 11, 1968, at Wichita, Kan. and blessed 
in joining her parents, James N. &amp; Elvera (Serbin) Riemann.

A long-time resident of Barton County, Cheryl was a very cheerful, 
fun loving, person who enjoyed socializing with her peers.&nbsp; From her 
time working at Pizza Hut, which she was very proud of, clear thru her 
time at Rosewood Services NextDoor, after her failing health, she was 
very upbeat and social.&nbsp; She was well known for her joking, ornery 
personality and big smile.&nbsp;&nbsp; She enriched others’ lives in the good 
times and in the bad; she loved to be around others in the community or 
at her home.&nbsp; Cheryl enjoyed going out and about, whether that was to 
play Bingo, go shopping, going out to eat, or getting her hair done. She
 developed many friendships through her years and enjoyed her time with 
company around her, watching movies, listening to music, or playing card
 games.&nbsp; She rode horses out at the Rosewood Ranch and was a participant
 in the annual Rodeo.&nbsp; She enjoyed being outdoors in the garden tending 
to the tomatoes, or at the Ranch in the orchard, harvesting the apples, 
grapes, and berries.&nbsp; She had a very bright, shining personality and 
will be greatly missed, by all those that were blessed in knowing her.

Survivors include her 3 children, son, Lonnie Mendenhall and 
grandchildren of Atchinson, KS; daughter, Geraldine (Matthew) Beals, and
 grandchildren, Rachael, Elliott, and Elaine of Clatskanie, OR; twin 
sister Carol (Henry) Rowe of Salina, KS; brother, James (Leah) Riemann, 
Jr., of Bismark, SD and sister Tammy. &nbsp;&nbsp;She was preceded in passing by 
her parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 25, 
2021, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with Pastor Larry Schumacher
 presiding. &nbsp;A dinner for her family and friends will be held after in 
celebration of Cheryl’s life. A private family inurnment will be held at

Harry Donald Coffman, 88, Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Friday, October 15, 2021.

On June 15, 1933, he was born in Bakersfield, California, to Kimsy and Icy (Taylor) Coffman. Harry was raised in Savanna, Oklahoma, where he fell in love with and then married Betty Hoover on July 24, 1954. Together they toured the world during his service in the U.S. Army.

After returning home, Harry went on to earn his bachelor’s in Chemistry from Oklahoma State University. A Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 64, Harry received an outstanding leadership award from national headquarters for his involvement. He retired from a long career with the FDA in St. Louis, Missouri, and shared almost 64 years of marriage with his beloved Betty, who preceded him in death on May 1, 2018, after which he moved to St. Joseph to be with family. Harry was a member of First Christian Church in St. Joseph, where he was active in community and church social clubs. He enjoyed his time volunteering at Mosaic hospital and reading to schoolchildren. His passions included playing golf, gardening, watching football with friends and family, and writing poetry. A kind and witty man who always put others first. A true gentleman, Harry will be deeply missed by all who knew him. To know Harry was to love him.

Harry is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John, Merryman, Grady, Irene, and Kimsy.

Survivors include his daughter, Dana Meers (Jim), son, Greg Coffman (Lisa), Sorento, IL; and grandsons, Jakob Ehlert (Ali), and Harrison Meers; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Harrington and James Hoover (Patsy), McAlester, OK).

Frank was an avid carpenter and mechanic. He loved riding his Harley every chance he got, collecting watches and spending time watching NASCAR with his dog Athena.

Shirley Louise Wirtz passed from her earthly life to her eternal life with our Lord and Savior on October 17, 2021.

She was born on September 21, 1943, to Joseph and Florence Taylor in St. Joseph, Missouri where she grew up and graduated from Savannah High School.

Shirley went on to marry Nicholas J. Bonura and of that was born her only child Angela Atchison. She is leaving behind her daughter, Angela, and her husband Craig Atchison. As well as three grandchildren, Nick Jerde, Christina Atchison, Brooke Atchison, and one great-grandson Jason Jerde. Shirley is also leaving her siblings, Marsha Wiedmaier, Phyllis McCoy, Kenny Jarvis, Janice Oliver, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Nick Jerde, her mother Florence Jarvis, and her sister Joyce Poling.

They had two sons, Nathan and Jason Faris. They all preceded her in death. She was later married to Kenneth Smith on Oct. 12, 1991, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS. They lived on a farm near Troy, KS. She was a active member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Wathena, KS where she was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML), the evening women’s group, and the Altar Guild. She had also helped serve as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Counselor for Trinity Lutheran Church. Sharon worked as a Lab Tech for the Atchison Hospital for many years, as a secretary for Dr. Wayne Wallace office, and then at the First National Bank, Troy, KS until her retirement. Kenny and Sharon then started their own business, Brenner Welding where she was the bookkeeper. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and was especially a good cook. Survivors include her husband Kenneth Smith, of the home, her father Alvin Wehking, Atchison, a sister Patricia (Charlie) Begesse, Temple, TX, two stepsons Ray Smith, Kansas City, MO and Darrin Smith, Parkville, MO., two step grandchildren, two nieces, four nephews, a sister-in-law, Betty Cameron, brother-in-law Rick Faris. She married Edward M. Atkins in September 1962. They later divorced. Mary was a lifetime member of Savannah Avenue Baptist Church. She also had a large CB family, where her handle was “Eagle Wings.” Very artistic by nature, she loved doing arts and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include her children, Tammie (Darrell) Pankratz, Tom (Gina) Atkins, and Teresa (Joseph) Bulla; sister, Gracie Wildburger; brother, Raymond Pittam; honorary daughter, Theresa Botsford; and caregiver, Cindy Lawrie.

Janice Kay Hoye was born January 25, 1947, and passed away October 7, 2021. She passed away amongst family in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Sherman House Hospice Hospital from her battle with cancer. 

Janice is survived by her husband of 49 years, Steven E Hoye of New River, Az. &nbsp;Janice had 3 children: Yvonne Hoye (who died after birth,) Dustin Hoye of Little Suamico, Wisconsin, Nicholis Hoye of Tempe Arizona, and stepdaughter, Ellen Garrett of Inverness, Scotland. She also had 5 grandchildren, and 2 younger brothers: Jack Gould of Savannah, Mo. and Jay Gould of St. Joseph, Mo.

Janice was a devoted wife and mother, who also deeply loved her grandchildren. She was born in St. Anthony, Idaho to parents, Roy &amp; Margie Gould. They later moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, when she was still a young child, where she was raised, through her first years of college. Janice attended Lafayette High School and Missouri Western University. After college, she worked at Vendo, while living in Independence, Mo. Janice met her husband, and it was love at first sight. After only 6 weeks of dating, they were married in Miami, Oklahoma. Janice later worked with handicap children for several years, and finally as a Teachers Aid for gifted children until she retired.

Janice and Steven lived in Independence most of their life together, outside of a brief move to Englewood, Colorado, when the boys were young, for Steve's work in commercial construction. They returned back to Independence after a few years, where both Dustin and Nicholis were raised, through attending college. Janice and Steve later moved to Tijeras, New Mexico in 2004, and then to New River, Arizona in 2007, where they have been for the last 14 years. Janice loved cruise ships and traveling. She was fortunate enough to have visited 65 foreign countries and/or territory islands. Her favorite things to do were flying with her husband Steve both by plane and hot air ballooning. She also enjoyed going to the movies, attending dinner shows, and seeing shows in Las Vegas, NV. Janice was very active in her local bible study group as well. One of Janice's most treasured pastimes was visiting waterfalls and watching sunsets, whether they were over the ocean or during evening car rides in the convertible with her husband. She could strike up a conversation with anyone she met, as she was always a very caring and loving person. Janice will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Janice Hoye will be cremated at Hansen Mortuary in Scottsdale, Az. and transported to Rupp Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Mo. Visitation will take place on November 6, 2021 at 1:00-2:00 pm followed by grave site service. Janice will be buried at Armstrong Cemetery in Rushville, Mo. alongside her daughter, Yvonne. Family would prefer donations rather than flowers to Cancer Research Center in Janice’s name.&nbsp; &nbsp;

She was born May 28, 1971 in St.Joseph, Missouri. She was a homemaker who enjoyed watching crime shows, law and order and criminal minds, she loved flowers and beautiful things, and especially her kids. 

Dawn was preceded in death by her brother, Floyd Proctor.

Ronald (Ron) Lee Schweizer left this world on October 16, 2021, at the age of 89 in his hometown of Amazonia, Missouri.&nbsp;

Ron was born to Pauline and Lloyd Schweizer on January 27, 1932. Ron attended Liggett Elementary School and was a 1950 graduate of Savannah High School. After graduating high school, Ron joined the Navy in 1952.&nbsp;

Upon leaving the Navy, Ron took over his family’s dairy farm north of Amazonia until he retired to become a US Postman. On August 21, 1959 he married the love of his life Eva Jean Totten. Together they raised their three children in Amazonia, Danny, Kim &amp; Craig.

Ron enjoyed his community and contributed greatly by building the Amazonia Ball Fields, assisting in the creation of the community building, and owning a local hardware store. He also enjoyed coaching many local softball teams. His favorite past time was sharing stories from his community. He also enjoyed yearly mushroom hunting adventures and sharing a laugh with anyone he met. He was a member of the American Legion, Saint John’s Church, Amazonia Lion’s Club and Andrew County Democrats for many years.&nbsp;

Ron was a family man and took pride in each of his loved ones. He is survived by his children: Danny Schweizer (Dianne), Kim Scanlan (Mike), and Craig Schweizer (Jodi); grandchildren Brandon Schweizer (Andrea), Michael Scanlan, Brooke Lehman (Hunter), Jennifer Scanlan, Lauren Schweizer, Makayla Schweizer, and Francesca Nellesen; 7 great grandchildren; and his sister Betty Fairbanks. Ron was preceded in death by his brother Larry Schweizer.&nbsp;

Ron will be honored in a Celebration of Life at the Amazonia Community Building on October 24th from 1-4.

Sandra L. (Hendrix) Potts of Savannah, Missouri passed away Saturday, Oct. 16 , 2021 at her home. She was born in Maryville, Missouri on May 14, 1957 to Jack and Mary (Williamson) Hendrix. She married Robert Potts on August 25, 1979.

Sandra enjoyed being outdoors, watching the KC&nbsp; Chiefs &nbsp;and spending time with her family and friends. She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1979 and North Andrew High School in 1975.

She is survived by her daughter Kristy (Hendrix) Green (Jeff); sister Jackie (Hendrix) McGuire; brothers Larry Hendrix (Millie) and David Hendrix; grandchildren Jessica Hill and Kaitlin Hill; life partner Curtis Wampler; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Ed was born on Jan. 12, 1933, in Huron, Kansas the son of George Edwin and Wilda June (Carson) Behler. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1952. Ed served in the United States Army from 1953-1956. He worked as welder for Kansas City Power &amp; Light Company for 21 years retiring in 1994 as a foreman. After his retirement he worked as a finish carpenter doing remodeling in Atchison for several of the historic homes. Ed was a member of the First Baptist Church, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Ed was married to Bette Jean Luckett on Feb. 5, 1956, in Marana, AZ. Mrs. Behler preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 2009. His parents, a son Justin Behler, two brothers and one sister also preceded him in death.

Survivors include two sons Gregory Behler and David Behler, both of Atchison, Ks, a daughter Dianna (Dennis) Snell, Atchison, KS, five sisters Leila McConnaughey, Everest, KS, Edith Myers, Huron, KS, Linda McCray, St. Joseph, MO, Shannon Gladman, and Pam Westbrook, of Independence, MO., fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty Louise (Sjobakken) Schultz, 89, passed away peacefully in Kansas City on Oct. 19, 2021 at North Kansas City Hospice House following complications from diabetes.

She was born near Ridgeway, IA on July 5, 1932. She married Myron Jack Schultz on Jan. 16, 1954 in Austin, MN, where they made their home. Betty worked many years in the Austin school district along with her husband who taught math.

Her life was remarkable for the fact that she was diagnosed with Type 1 insulin-dependent Juvenile Diabetes at age 2 yrs. She lived another 87 years carefully controlling this chronic illness before she developed her first complication which eventually took her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron J. Schultz; her parents, Arthur and Genevieve (DeGrave) Sjobakken; and a daughter, Lisa Ann, who died at birth.

Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Luerding; and four grandchildren, Lauren, Nickolas, Hannah (Harold) Greer, and Victor.
