St. Joseph has received more than 30 applications for Fire
Chief.

City Manager Bryan Carter says city officials decided to
narrow the search to replace Mike Dalsing, who retired as Fire Chief June 10th.

“So, some of the feedback we got early on as Chief Dalsing was
anticipating and announcing his retirement; that information was that we might
be better off, be open to any candidate, but be more active in the search in
the region,” Carter tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline.

Carter says city officials are working to identify what type
of candidate would be ideal.

“The interview process will be a little different than most of
our just regular hiring processes,” Carter says. “This is a quite significant
position, one that affects a big portion of the city and one that really requires
a great deal of leadership and some public outlook. It’s a very public
position.”

Carter says the city has a good, deep pool of applicants from
which to choose. Carter says the position demands a specific kind of person.

St. Joseph has nine fire stations with 11 companies and more
than 130 employees in five divisions. Interim Chief Kenny Cordonnier leads the
department at present.

Good, deep pool of applicants for St. Joseph Fire Chief

St. Joseph’s Pony Express Museum couldn’t celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Pony Express last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Museum Executive Director Cindy Daffron says the museum is taking advantage of Smithsonian Day, or Free Museum Day, Saturday to celebrate that milestone.

"Last year in 2020, we celebrated 160 years, but was really unable to take it to a live moment," Daffron tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "So we've decided to do it with Smithsonian Day."

As part of the celebration, parents will be able to take their kids on an interactive experience, tracing the Pony Express trail.

"We'll actually have a two thousand mile trail for the children to come, pick up a stick horse, and figure out what dangers and how much fun and what there was to do, we'll have some things in the museum also," Daffron says.

The interactive representative trail can be found at the Pony Express Event Center, formerly known as Callison Hall, at 1220 South 10th Street.

Daffron says the model of the Pony Express trail began on a small scale.

"We've been doing this two thousand mile trail for about 12 years, and we've kind of built it up, it was a small little thing and we thought oh we'll try it out, then it became popular," Daffron explains.

Daffron says as the trail became more popular, the museum added to it.

"And really do more of what the dangers are and really teach the kids, make it more elaborate," Daffron adds.

Daffron explains the exhibit invites children to start their journey in St. Joseph, buying a horse and traveling across the river, hearing stories and learning of the dangers of the trail, all the way to California.

Daffron says that for people coming out, there are not many restrictions when it comes to masks, but the museum still has patrons’ safety in mind.

"What we say here is if you want to wear a mask it is appreciated, but it is not mandatory," Daffron elaborates.  "And we have zoning throughout the museum where you go your six foot or 10 try to stay in it, and we have sanitizing stations throughout, we'll also have sanitizing stations over in Callison Hall, or what we call the Pony Express Event Center."

Daffron says they are looking forward to people coming out as the museum will have reenactors floating around, as well as the many other exhibits on display.

Mosaic Life Care CEO, Dr. Mark Laney, has written a book about
the experience of caregivers and patients in the early days of the coronavirus
pandemic.

“A Balloon Into the Sky,” shares 40 stories of patients and
caregivers working their way through the uncertainty of those early days of the
pandemic.

“I felt compelled that we needed to capture these stories and
provide some healing; a path to healing, primarily for our caregivers, but then
subsequently for our community,” Laney tells reporters during a news briefing
at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph.

Laney says the book is meant to be read as a devotion, one
chapter a day. He says the book shuns the topics of controversy and seeks to be
a book of healing.

It is co-written by Kris Daise, Internal Communications Manager
at Mosaic.

Proceeds from sales of the book go to the Mosaic Life Care
Foundation.

The book tells 40 stories taken from the first frightening
days of the pandemic.

“As we began writing, it became clear that this wasn’t just
about St. Joseph, that this was a historical moment for our country, that all
of us would end up remembering and that we were actually capturing the history
of what was happening across America, not just what was happening in St. Joseph,”
according to Laney.

Laney, who is a Sunday school teacher at Ashland Methodist
Church in St. Joseph, says the book draws on various religions and spiritual
traditions as those impacted by COVID-19 try to make sense of their experiences
during the pandemic. Laney hopes readers will gain a greater sense of peace and
understanding from the stories told between its covers; stories both of sadness
and of victory.

Laney projects that healing once the pandemic subsides will bring
wisdom and discernment, a better understanding of our place in the world, even
our calling.

Laney says as others talked about masks and possible vaccines,
Mosaic kept coming back to healing.

“It applies as much to families as it does to caregivers. It
applies as much to citizens, to try and get some understanding and point of
reference of what just happened and what it means in our lives. And it’s going
to have an effect for many, many years to come,” Laney says. “We are changed
forever, because of what has happened.”

Book written by Mosaic CEO hopes to bring healing out of pandemic

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a suspect for alleged criminal threat have filed charges of attempted aggravated arson against&nbsp;34-year old Delvin Debnam, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Just before 7p.m. Saturday police responded to a residence in the 1500 block Commercial Street in Atchison to investigate a report of a man trying to set the house on fire, according to Wilson.

Officers located 34-year old Delvin Debnam at the residence. A 38-year old woman had left the residence. Officers found her several blocks away.

It was determined that a disturbance had occurred at the residence between Debnam and the woman who both reside at the home. During the disturbance Debnam threatened to burn the house down. There was no fire found at the house. However, the investigation determined that Debnam had attempted several times to start a fire in the house, according to Wilson.

Police took Debnam into custody. He remains in the Atchison County Jail, according to online jail records.

Auto thefts in St. Joseph have tapered off after becoming a
growing problem the past few years.

Police Chief Chris Connally says the trend has finally started
going in the right direction.

“2016 was when it first went up, bounced up,” Connally tells
host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “This year we’re actually about 120 less
auto thefts so far this year than we had last year. This year we should be
about the lowest since 2016. We might be pretty close to that 2016 level.”

St. Joseph hit a high of 781 motor vehicle thefts in one year.
At present, St. Joeph police have investigated 275 stolen vehicle reports this
year.

Connally says there are a variety of ways to steal a car.

“Where someone used their car or they were out with somebody,
they went in the store and this person they know took off with their car.
There’s a lot of those also,” Connally says. “But there’s a lot of them where
people leave their keys in their car, they go roaming and, fortunately, in our
area we recover most of those cars successfully.”

People around St. Joseph will have an opportunity for a 'day-cation' as select museums around St. Joseph will participate in 'Free Museum Day' on Saturday.

Beth Conway with the St. Joseph Visitors Bureau says Free Museum Day started as part of Smithsonian Day, which was created by Smithsonian Magazine, but in order to make it less confusing it was decided to just call it Free Museum Day.

Conway says around St. Joseph, how people will go about visiting the participating museums is a little different from how Smithsonian Day works.

"Normally through the Smithsonian Magazine, you'd have to go online and get a ticket to go to the individual museums that signed up for that particular free day," Conway tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "But in our case our museums decided to just forego that process, you don't need a ticket."

Instead, all you have to do is jump in the car and head to one of the participating museums.

"The whole family can go visit all of the museums in St. Joseph, or most of the museums in St. Joseph, and get in for free," Conway adds.

Conway says that some of the thirteen museums in St. Joseph will participate in the annual event on Saturday, adding that while most of the museums participating will just be allowing free entry, some of them will have some special events running during their operation hours.

"There's all kind of various activities, the best bet is to go to their individual websites or Facebook pages, to see what in particular they are doing," Conway explains. "Some museums are just opening for free during the day, there's not going to be a special event or special tour you just come and go as you please, but some are going to have special events on that day."

 Conway acknowledges that some people may not realize how many museums there are in St. Joseph, and that Free Museum Day will provide an opportunity for those maybe lesser known museums to draw patrons in.

"It's a great opportunity for especially families that have a lot of kids that may not be able to afford the admission ticket that you normally have to pay on this particular day," Conway says. "We have 13 museums here in St. Joe, and so what we like to say is we have more museums per capita then even Washington D.C., it's enormous the amount of museums we have for a town our size."

St. Joseph Museums participating in annual 'Free Museum Day'

NODAWAY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9a.m. Wednesday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Jeep Renegade driven by Anna R. Horn, 24, Maryville, was eastbound on U.S. 136 six miles east of Maryville.

The Jeep rear-ended a 2008 Sterling 8513 driven by Justin W. Bietz, 29, Stanberry, who had stopped to make a left turn.

A private vehicle transported Horn to Mosaic in Maryville. Bietz was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Maryville woman hospitalized after rear-end crash

ANDREW COUNTY —A Missouri man was injured in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Wednesday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Dewey R. Heath, 34, Helena, Mo., was northbound on Route Z one mile south of Helena.

The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road, became airborne, crossed county road 281 and rolled.

Andrew County EMS transported Heath to Mosaic Life Care. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Eagle Radio in St. Joseph, in conjunction with Missouri Western Athletics, has announced that KFEQ sports director Tommy Rezac will become the next voice of Missouri Western State University Athletics on the Griffon Sports Network (680 AM, 95.3 FM).

Rezac succeeds longtime voice of the Griffons Dave Riggert, who recently became the radio voice of James Madison University Athletics in Harrisonburg, Va.

"I'm extremely thrilled and honored to be taking over as the radio voice of Missouri Western Athletics," Rezac said. "It has long been my career goal to become the radio voice of an NCAA program, and I am blessed to be working with so many amazing people at Missouri Western and Eagle Radio.

"That said, I know I have large shoes to fill. Dave is an amazing talent and he gave this role so much passion and dedication over the years. While I'm still fairly new here and am learning some new names and faces, I promise to give this job the amount of excitement, passion, respect and dedication it deserves. I do not take this lightly, and I am humbled to start this journey!"

Rezac has worked as the sports director at 680 KFEQ, St.JosephPost.com and Eagle Radio since December 2020. In that time, he has largely covered area high school sports, but has also covered Missouri Western, Northwest Missouri State, Chiefs Training Camp and other local news and sports stories. He also anchors the morning sportscasts, as well as afternoon news and sports on KFEQ.

"I've loved it here in St. Joseph," Rezac said. "The people have been very welcoming, and this community has a lot to offer. It's nice being only two hours from where I grew up, but in less than nine months of living in St. Joseph, it absolutely feels like home, and it's the people who have made it that way for me. I've already met so many great people at Missouri Western, and I'm thrilled that this role will give me the opportunity to get to know many more coaches, athletes, administrators, alums and fans!"

Rezac has won multiple awards for his sports reporting, including first place in radio sports reporting from the Missouri Broadcasters Association this past year for a story he did on <a href="https://stjosephpost.com/posts/b94afebc-5ae7-4db9-90d8-eae561102c33">Mid-Buchanan's run to state wrestling</a>.

He is a 2017 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he majored in broadcast journalism with an emphasis in sports communications.

The youngest of four siblings, Rezac is a native of Valparaiso, NE. He lives in St. Joseph with his dog, Milo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

They are both diehard Husker fans as well.

Four Central High School seniors have been named 2022 National
Merit Semifinalists.

The St. Joseph School District reports Joshua Donaldson, Adam
Honson, Frederick Rivas-Giorgi, and Blakely Thompson have the opportunity to
continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth
nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring.

The four are among 16,000 semifinalists chosen nationwide.

Several steps remain for the semifinalists as they compete in
the National Merit Scholarship program that honors students who show
exceptional academic ability and promise for success in college. Students
selected don’t just show academic rigor, but also are active in the schools and
communities.

The school district provides a brief overview of the students’
activities: Joshua Donaldson – Scholar Bowl, Drama club, French club, Chamber
and Concert choir, DECA and Missouri Boys State; Adam Honson – National Honor
Society, Student Government, Scholar Bowl, JV Basketball and Golf, Marching
Band, Varsity Swim team; Frederick Rivas-Giorgi – Quiz Bowl, Speech &amp;
Debate, Varsity Swim team, Orchestra, Theater and Drama club; Blakely Thompson
– National Honor Society, Student Government, Missouri Scholars, Speech &amp;
Debate, Varsity Basketball, Missouri Boys State.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is highly competitive.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of

Four Central HS seniors chosen as National Merit Semifinalists

A couple of major art exhibitions begin this weekend at the Albrecht-Kemper
Museum of Art in St. Joseph.

Albrecht-Kemper Executive Director Eric Fuson says the
Missouri Art Now exhibit showcases 60 artworks from 60 Missouri artists,
including 17 from northwest Missouri.

“So, it’s your last chance to see all these artists from
around the state and there are some super talented people in this, that’s for
sure,” Fuson tells host Barry Birr on the KFEQ Hotline. “It’s an amazing show,
actually and we’re privileged to have it to be honest.”

The Missouri Art Now:&nbsp; A
Bicentennial Celebration begins Saturday and runs through November 7th.

Also, beginning Saturday is The Joe Show:&nbsp; Selections from the Gray Manufacturing
Corporate Collection.

Fuson says it’s a rare opportunity to see incredible pieces of
art selected by Gray over a very long time.

“We’re honoring that vision that he had,” Fuson says. “It’s
amazing. They’ve got over 13-Hundred pieces in the collection. We have just
scratched the surface with about 130 of those, so about 10%.”

This is the first public exhibition of the Gray collection.
Many of the art pieces adorn offices at Gray Manufacturing. Fuson says Gray
makes it a point to have employees choose art pieces to display in their
offices.

“He had told me at one point that one of his numbers guys
looked it up and said there was something going on, that something’s changed
and I can’t figure it out, but productivity has gone up,” Fuson says. “They
narrowed it down to it was when they hung the art work around in everybody’s
offices productivity went up over 9%.”

The Joe Show is a display of paintings, drawings, and
sculptures.

Major art exhibitions begin Saturday at Albrecht-Kemper

The St. Joseph Health Department is urging more people to get the free COVID vaccine, especially with the vaccination rate in Buchanan County stagnating.

The Health Department’s Stephanie Melita says in Buchanan County 24-point-2 percent people have initiated vaccination while 21-point-8 percent are fully vaccinated, among the lowest in the state.

Malita reminds people that the vaccine is free to get, and as more doses are released, there are even more places you can get it other than the health department.

"Your health care provider, if you have a regular health care provider, if they don't have it they'll know where you can get it," Malita explains. "Pharmacies, many, many pharmacies in our community carry the vaccine."

Malita adds that if you search online for pharmacies providing the COVID vaccine, you can find which provides the vaccine and what vaccine they are providing.

Melita says the clinic also has doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

"The health department has vaccine, we carry the Pfizer and we're here typically eight to eleven and one to four, Monday through Friday, you can check in here and get the vaccine," Melita tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

The health department clinic is closed today until 1 pm and again tomorrow from 11pm through the rest of the day. Clinic hours well return to normal on Friday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Chevy Silverado driven by Johnathon T. Meservey, 19 Braymer, was northbound on. Route A and traveled off the east side of the road. The driver overcorrected and the pickup traveled off the west side of the road, overturned and the driver was ejected from the passenger side window.

The pickup came to rest off the west side of the road and became engulfed in flames.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Sterling driven by Justin W. Viets, 30, Stanberry, was&nbsp; southbound on Highway H three miles south of Darlington.

The truck traveled off the east side of the road. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle overturned. A private vehicle transported a passenger Christopher M. Swinford, 41, Maryville, to Mosaic in Albany. Viets was not injured. Viets and Swinford were not wearing a seat belts, according to MSHP.

GENTRY COUNTY—A Missouri man was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Tuesday in Gentry County.The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2008 Sterling driven by Justin W. Viets, 30, Stanberry, was&nbsp; southbound on Highway H three miles south of Darlington.The truck traveled off the east side of the road. The driver overcorrected and the vehicle overturned. A private vehicle transported a passenger Christopher M. Swinford, 41, Maryville, to Mosaic in Albany. Viets was not injured. Viets and Swinford were not wearing a seat belts, according to MSHP.

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon for an alleged parole violation.

The Kansas Department of Corrections reported 47-year-old Richard J. Renne of Atchison as an absconder. Renne had been out of prison since July after previous convictions that involve heroin possession/distribution and two convictions for child abuse and torture, according to the KDOC.

On Monday, Atchison Police located and arrested Renne on a Kansas Department of Corrections detain order for the parole violation.&nbsp; He remains in custody, according to online jail records.

Kansas man convicted of child abuse jailed again

The St. Joseph Health Department clinic will be traveling off-site this week, prompting a change in hours the next three days.

The department’s Stephanie Malita says these closures will only affect the clinic and not the other parts of the department. The clinic will be closed on all day today, tomorrow until 1pm and then Thursday starting at 11am, for the rest of the day.

Malita says the clinic will be traveling to continue a service offered this past summer, for businesses interested in getting the COVID-19 vaccine for employees.

"We are going off site to a workplace to offer COVID-19 vaccine to employees, and we've done this periodically throughout the spring and summer as workplaces have contacted us wanting to offer the vaccine to their employees," Malita tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post

Malita says the number of area residents who have initiated vaccination in the area has remained steady. And Malita says compared to the number of calls received when the vaccinations began, it is disappointing more residents haven’t gotten vaccinated. . .

"Back in January and February, we were getting calls of when is my tier going to open up, and I want to get vaccinated," Malita explains. "And then as tiers began to open up we didn't see the demand meet our expectations based on the phone calls we had been getting earlier."

The number of individuals that have initiated vaccination in the area has remained steady, which Malita says is disappointing. 

Malita says those who get vaccinated have more flexibility , especially when running in and out of the store, and also for those times around people for an extended period.

"We have said all along that it's an extended exposure, kind of a 15 minute time frame, that if you're around somebody for that length of time and you find out that within a couple days of you having been around them that they've tested positive, that's when you're looking at a quarantine if you're not vaccinated," Malita says.

Malita adds that another benefit of getting the vaccination is that in some workplaces, someone vaccinated does not have to quarantine.

St. Joseph Health Department announce clinic closures, changes in hours this week

Missouri Western State University President Elizabeth Kennedy says
the university is in sound financial shape, though she wants to see more
progress.

“We still have a ways to go in terms of looking at revenues,
expenditures, and how we’re dealing with that,” Kennedy tells KFEQ/St. Joseph
Post during an interview in her office. “Obviously, it’s going to be tied to
enrollment. It will also be tied to state appropriations and what we might get
there.”

State legislators were very good to Missouri Western this past
legislative session, according to Kennedy. Missouri Western received a 3.7%
state appropriation increase in the current state budget. The legislature also
appropriated $2.5 million for capital improvements on the St. Joseph campus.

Still, Kennedy is aware what the legislature gives, the
legislature can take away.

“I think it’s been a good year, but lest we forget, in terms
of state budgeting, what happens at the state level, one of the easy marks, if
you will, is education. So, we have to be cognizant of that,” Kennedy says.

Kennedy followed in the steps of former President Matt Wilson
who guided the university through $6 million in budget cuts, which included
eliminating majors that graduated too few students. Kennedy says the university
is still dealing with some of the fallout from those moves.

Kennedy says a key to the university’s future is reopening the
St. Joseph campus to in-person learning. As she views a new fall semester
unfolding, she recalls the spring of 2020.

“We were gearing up for our fall 2020 semester, but it was
going to be with COVID, no vaccine, no way to mitigate, still learning about
the disease and learning how to mitigate it,” Kennedy says. “So, the thought of,
‘I spent the last semester of my senior year in my bedroom with my computer and
now I’m going to go to college and sit in my dorm room with my computer.’ Why
would you do that?”

Kennedy says Missouri Western will be better able to assess
its financial position at the end of the month when the final fall semester
student count is taken.

“We’re getting there. Right? We’re definitely making progress.”

MWSU president says campus finances moving in right direction

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged criminal threat in Atchison.

Just before 7p.m. oSaturday police responded to a residence in the 1500 block Commercial Street in Atchison to investigate a report of a man trying to set the house of fire, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Officers located 34-year old Delvin Debnam at the residence. A 38-year old woman had left the residence. Officers found her several blocks away. 

 It was determined that a disturbance had occurred at the residence between Debnam and the woman who both reside at the home. During the disturbance Debnam threatened to burn the house down.  There was no fire found at the house. Police took Debnam into custody for on a requested charged of criminal threat, according to Wilson. He remains in the Atchison County Jail on Monday, according to online jail records.

Missouri U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt has been in the middle of the
fight in Washington over proposed changes to the nation’s election laws.

Blunt, a Republican, opposes a proposal by Democrats to
provide greater federal oversight of state and local elections. Blunt, the
former Missouri Secretary of State, says elections need to be left in the hands
of local officials.

“I think elections are better run by people who are closer to
voters and have a higher sense of responsibility that voters need to, one, be
able to vote as easily as they can, but two, also have real confidence that whatever
happened on Election Day was what really happened and what voters intended to
have happen,” Blunt tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.

The election measure, named after Civil Rights leader
Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, squeaked through the U.S. House 219-to-212
on a party-line vote. Senate Republicans have vowed to block the package from
coming to a vote in that chamber.

“The bills that the Democrats have produced so far are an
absolute takeover of elections,” Blunt says “Now, they’d love to also change
the redistricting system set up in the Constitution without changing the
Constitution before this very next redistricting occurs in the next six months
or so. And so, they’re desperate to get this done.”

Blunt also served as an election official on the local level,
working as Greene County Clerk prior to being elected Secretary of State.

He doesn’t see the legislation passing in Washington.

“I don’t think they can get it done, but I’ll be in the middle
of that fight.”

And while people are there, they receive resources and training to be on their own."We try to work with each individual and family to help them pay off debt and create savings, we teach them life skills while they're here with us, anything from how to clean your house well, how to cook the meals for the week, how to take care of a car, all those life skills essentials we need to know as an adult," Robinson tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.Robinson says Pivotal Point hopes to help people change. "In the line of work that we're in, I think we have to believe that people can change, you know that's a big part of our heart is we do believe people can change," Robinson explains.But in order for people to change, they need to ask themselves some tough questions to know how to replace their bad habits."If I'm going to quit smoking for example, what do I replace that with? If I'm going to change the course of my life and change my career or just my living situation, what do I replace that with?" says Robinson.When Pivotal Point began in St. Joseph in 2011, it was called Hillcrest. It transitioned to the current name in 2018.The organization will hold a gathering on September 18th at the Word of Life Church to celebrate 10 years of changing lives.
