DAVIESS COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 5:30a.m. Saturday in Daviess County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;2018 Kenworth T680 driven by Cassandra Hobbs, 32, Kansas City, was southbound on Interstate 35 four miles north of Cameron.

The truck traveled off the road and overturned. EMS transported Hobbs and a one-year-old female passenger to Cameron Regional Medical Center. They were not restrained, according to the MSHP.

MERCER COUNTY—A Missouri woman was injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Friday in Mercer County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a&nbsp;1986 Chevy C\30 driven by Jeffery M. Mueller, 62, Bethany, was on U.S. 136 five miles west of Princeton.

The pickup traveled onto the north fog line and the passenger side rearview mirror struck a blue and purple giant bicycle driven by Amy L. McDaniel, 48, Princeton, who was traveling on the north shoulder.

The bicyclist was ejected and later airlifted to KU Medical Center.

Mueller was not injured and not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

A precautionary boil advisory is in effect for St. Joseph area Missouri American Water customers.

Missouri American Water issued a statement on Friday that said that customers might notice cloudy water, but that it is temporary.&nbsp;

Customers who have signed up for emergency notifications should be notified about the advisory.&nbsp; The advisory is precautionary and the hope is that it will be lifted in the next 24 to 48 hours.&nbsp;

Water for drinking should be boiled for up to three minutes on a rolling boil.&nbsp; Water that is to be used for bathing, washing, or non drinking is safe to use

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest.

Shortly after 8:30p.m. Wednesday an officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of the 800 block Kansas Avenue in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson. The vehicle driven by 33-year-old Justen Houk fled from the officer and a pursuit followed until it was terminated on north River Road.&nbsp;

On Thursday police located and arrested&nbsp; Haukon on a District Court warrant for fleeing and attempting to elude police, driving while suspended, reckless driving, and other traffic offenses, according to Wilson.

Hauk has a previous conviction for&nbsp;Indecent Solicitation of a Child and two convictions for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; In May, the KDOC&nbsp; listed him as an absconder.

He is being held on a $2500 bond, according to online jail records.

HARRISON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Friday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by John G. Gomez, 58, Des Moines, was southbound on Interstate 35 eight miles north of Eagleville.&nbsp;

The motorcycle crested a hill and struck an unknown object in the road. The driver and a passenger identified as Kimberly C. Gomez, 52, Des Moines, were ejected.&nbsp;

LifeNet transported John Gomez to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.&nbsp; Kimberly Gomez refused treatment. They were not wearing helmets, according to the MSHP.

Man airlifted to hospital after NW Missouri motorcycle accident

Since 2012, Mosaic Life Care has been a part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network and celebrated that relationship this week. &nbsp;

Mayo Clinic Chief Medical Officer Doctor Clark Otley says the relationship with Mosaic has continued to grow through 10 years. &nbsp;

"And probably exceeded what we've grown," Otley tells reporters. "I'd say the Mosaic team is pretty unique, they are very engaged with the relationship, and it's like anything the more you put into it the more you get out of it, so we've got Mosaic physicians who visit Mayo Clinic, we've got teams that join with the Mayo Clinic teams and figure stuff out."&nbsp;

Otley says the mutual sharing of information and technology between the hospitals has benefited both the Mayo Clinic and Mosaic by helping to keep patients local and with caregivers they trust. &nbsp;

Otley says patient care is a big focus for the Mayo Clinic which he sees mirrored at Mosaic.&nbsp; Otley says what advances that care is research.&nbsp;

"So, we bring that, which we have NIH grants that bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to advance that research, well not every medical center can do that, and then part of our philanthropy goes to our research as well," Otley explains. "So, we kind of bring the results of that research and share that with Mosaic so they don't have to build up a gigantic research branch to access that kind of knowledge."&nbsp;

Otley says the Mayo Clinic is also aiding Mosaic's new medical school and passing on best practices to educate future doctors and nurses, which Otley says will give Mosaic students a significant jump starts in their education. &nbsp;

The Mayo Clinic is responsible for one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the world. &nbsp;

While Mosaic and the Mayo Clinic celebrate the 10-year relationship between the two hospitals, the thought becomes, what could come in the future of it? &nbsp;

Otley says after being limited by technology prior to this year, things are becoming even more clear of ways to share data between the two hospitals. &nbsp;

"And so, for all of our Mayo Clinic Care Network members we have a big push to try to maximize the use of our data to get the best possible care," Otley says. "And there are some pretty amazing things that are coming out, including analyzing what's called an ECG, it's a heart tracing."&nbsp;

Otley says currently you can only trace on the surface level which is easy to read. But he adds that there is further technology that can read not only what the heart was doing, but what it could do in the future. &nbsp;

Otley says technology like that at both Mayo and Mosaic could help detect certain heart problems well before they ever happen to patients.&nbsp;

Mosaic Life Care celebrates 10 years as part of Mayo Clinic Care Network

A northwest Missouri man charged with killing two Wisconsin
brothers and disposing of their bodies on his farm has pleaded guilty to
first-degree murder in both deaths.

By pleading guilty, Garland “Joey” Nelson of Braymer avoids
the death penalty.

Nelson had faced the possibility of two death sentences in the
murders of 24-year-old Justin Diemel and 35-year-old Nicholas Diemel. He
pleaded guilty in Cass County Circuit Court Friday morning. He has been sentenced
to life in prison for both murders, to be served back-to-back.

Nelson had told prosecutors nearly two years ago that he had
disposed of the bodies of the two men, but at that time he denied killing them.

The two brothers disappeared after visiting Nelson’s farm near
Braymer in July of 2019. Authorities found their burned remains in both Missouri
and Nebraska.

The Diemel brothers had a livestock operation in Shawano
County, Wisconsin. Their father reported them missing in July of 2019 after they
failed to return from Nelson’s farm. Court records stated the Diemel family had
sent livestock to Nelson to care for, but he had neglected the cattle. The brothers had
gone to the Nelson farm to demand a refund totaling $250,000.

Court records disclose Nelson shot the brothers, stuffed their
bodies in barrels, and burned them. The remains had been dumped on a manure pile;
the barrels hidden on the property.

Nelson had been trouble with the law before.

Nelson had been sentenced in 2016 to two years in prison for
selling more than 600 head of cattle that didn’t belong to him. Nelson had
pleaded guilty to cattle fraud of more than $250,000 in losses. He was released
from prison in March of 2018.

Democrats hope to make inroads in northwest
Missouri this November.

There are no Democrats serving as state
representatives or senators in all of northern Missouri.

Assistant Missouri House Minority Leader, Rep. Richard
Brown of Kansas City, still sees opportunity, saying it is important for
Democrats to get out and talk with voters, even in the heavily Republican
districts of northwest Missouri.

“Missouri is such a diversified state,” Brown
tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “Not one Missourian is the same, whether we’re
talking about northwest Missouri compared to southwest Missouri, we are very
diversified in our state.”

Brown says that if Democrats want to make headway
in the legislature, the party needs to get its message out. He says there are
many independents in Missouri who vote Republican, because there are no
Democrats on their ballot.

“They’re not actual Republicans, but that’s the
way they vote, because that’s all that they know,” according to Brown. “And if
they sit back and have an opportunity to meet with Democrats and find out what
our goals are, what our initiatives are, I think they would see that we really
try to fight and work for the people.”

Brown says the party is willing to back
candidates running in Republican districts, noting that there are 50
uncontested House races with no Democrat on the ballot.

“That seems to be the attitude of some of the
outlying, rural areas; that you can’t get elected unless you’re a Republican,
but that’s not true,” Brown asserts. “What we’re looking for is we’re looking
for qualified candidates, people of good quality, who want to run and want to
run as Democrats and we will support them.”

Brown recently toured northern Missouri with
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Trudy Busch Valentine of St. Louis. Brown says one of the
reasons that there are no representatives or senators in northern Missouri is
that the party has failed to field viable candidates.

There are currently 107 Republicans and 48
Democrats in the Missouri House with several vacancies.

RILEY COUNTY, Kansas —One person was injured in an accident just after 10:30p.m. Thursday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Jacob N. Hahn, 22, Maysville was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Tallgrass Road.

The van rear-ended a 2009 Peterbilt semi driven by Roy D. Thompson, 62, Houston, Texas. After impact Hahn lost control of the van and it traveled into the ditch.

EMS transported Thompson to Via Christi in Manhattan. Hahn was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Maysville man involved in I-70 rear-end, semi crash

On Wednesday, police arrested 38-year-old Perez D. Smith of Atchison, on a Community Corrections detain order, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Smith has two previous drug convictions, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. 

Earlier this month, police arrested Smith on a requested charge of meth possession, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

Buchanan County officials are seeing a growing number of homeless people throughout the county. &nbsp;

Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner Lee Sawyer says there's no sure-fire way to solve the problem&nbsp;

"It's a difficult situation and I think these things kind of tend to go into long term cycles," Sawyer tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "But, certainly a lot of what seems to be done is not working great."&nbsp;

Sawyer says while part of the problem is due to mental health, another cause of the problem is the opioid crisis in Buchanan County&nbsp;

"It's the root of a lot of crime, it's the root of a lot of homelessness, it's the root of a lot of financial disaster for people," Sawyer explains. "It's a very difficult thing."&nbsp;

Sawyer says both the homeless and opioid problem in Buchanan County are ongoing issues that are becoming more difficult to solve. &nbsp;

Sawyer says some relief could come from funds the county will receive as part of an opioid settlement. &nbsp;

Sawyer says city and county officials will get together once that money is received to find the best way to use that money to help with the opioid situation.&nbsp;

"And that's really complicated," Sawyer points out. "But there are people that are doing good work, we just want to try to not be to fragmented, you know there's a lot of groups with really good intentions that are doing good things, but how can we take that money and really try to hit as much of a bullseye on various aspects of that as we possibly can."&nbsp;

Sawyer says he hopes that money will be seen in the near future and it will need to be used towards things such as opioid rehabilitation and prevention.&nbsp;

Sawyer says it's a hard situation to solve with the growing number of deaths in the county, many of them due to fentanyl. &nbsp;

"Young people or people unaware that they're getting something like that and the lethalness of fentanyl and those kinds of things, it's scary," Sawyer says. ."You know you worry about people that kind of unknowingly do something maybe they shouldn't even be doing but still they're not expecting anything like that."&nbsp;

Sawyer says it's an ongoing effort working with medical and law officials to try to curb the problem.&nbsp; He says funds were expected earlier this year, but officials are still waiting for them to become available&nbsp;

"It's a very difficult thing."&nbsp;Sawyer says both the homeless and opioid problem in Buchanan County are ongoing issues that are becoming more difficult to solve. &nbsp;Sawyer says some relief could come from funds the county will receive as part of an opioid settlement. &nbsp;Sawyer says city and county officials will get together once that money is received to find the best way to use that money to help with the opioid situation.&nbsp;"And that's really complicated," Sawyer points out. "But there are people that are doing good work, we just want to try to not be to fragmented, you know there's a lot of groups with really good intentions that are doing good things, but how can we take that money and really try to hit as much of a bullseye on various aspects of that as we possibly can."&nbsp;Sawyer says he hopes that money will be seen in the near future and it will need to be used towards things such as opioid rehabilitation and prevention.&nbsp;Sawyer says it's a hard situation to solve with the growing number of deaths in the county, many of them due to fentanyl. &nbsp;"Young people or people unaware that they're getting something like that and the lethalness of fentanyl and those kinds of things, it's scary," Sawyer says. ."You know you worry about people that kind of unknowingly do something maybe they shouldn't even be doing but still they're not expecting anything like that."&nbsp;Sawyer says it's an ongoing effort working with medical and law officials to try to curb the problem.&nbsp; He says funds were expected earlier this year, but officials are still waiting for them to become available&nbsp;

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Nissan Murano driven by Titus T. Whitelow, 34, Glendale, Arizona, was northbound on Interstate 35 one mile north of Cameron.

The SUV traveled off the road, struck a ditch and rolled onto its roof.

Cameron Ambulance transported Whitelow to Liberty Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Driver hospitalized after DeKalb Co. rollover accident

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on drug charges after an arrest.

Just after 10:30a.m. Tuesday, police arrested 50-year-old Dwight A. Downing, Jr., of Atchison, in 1200 block North 5th Street in Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Downing is being held for a Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear in court and requested charges of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia which was found on his person during the warrant arrest.

Police found drugs on suspect during warrant arrest

Charlie Phillips and his mother, Tina Schoonmaker, attended the Missouri Western football season opener on September 1 against Central Oklahoma at Spratt Stadium in St Joseph.

Phillips and the Special Olympics Missouri flag football team were honored on the field prior to kickoff. The team&nbsp;competed against Special Olympics Kansas at Spratt Stadium during Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp.

However, there was a special, surprise announcement for Phillips right after for the entire stadium to hear.

"Charlie Phillips from Savannah, Missouri - you&nbsp;have been nominated to represent Special Olympics Missouri and Special Olympics USA in&nbsp;powerlifting&nbsp;at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Germany!"

"After they announced it," Charlie recalled, "I saw myself on the jumbotron. Then, I got the letter. I was on the news a couple of times. I was so happy that night."

The 25-year-old Phillips will compete in the Special Olympics Team USA trials in San Antonio November 14-18 in an attempt to qualify for&nbsp;the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin.

"He's, I would say, very deserving of it," Schoonmaker said. "Ever since he's gotten into powerlifting, he's been very focused on that sport and still does it when it's out of season for Special Olympics.&nbsp;

Phillips has competed in Special Olympics for close to 15 years. He started by competing in soccer, speed skating and track and field. But from an early age, he was drawn to powerlifting. Once he got a little older, he finally got his chance.

He's been powerlifting regularly for the past seven years.

"I never quit doing it," Charlie said, "because it's...my life. It's a passion. It's like, anyone can do it."

Schnoonmaker says Charlie's love for competition and lifting goes well beyond Special Olympics.

"He belongs to the United States Powerlifting Association," she said. "He competes along with other lifters. He doesn't just do Special Olympics in powerlifting. He still does flag football and basketball."

Phillips says anyone can take up powerlifting if they wanted. Yet, he acknowledges that simply getting the opportunity to try out for Team USA required a lot of ups and downs.

"It's like a mountain," Charlie said. "Lots of ups and downs. It's very difficult, but after you compete for those first years, and your competition is complete, you just want to do more and that's what I'm doing now."

All of that work has now led to a moment Charlie has dreamed about for years.

"I've been working so hard to achieve my goals," he said. "This is one of my dreams. Ever since I started Special Olympics, I told my parents, my siblings, I said, 'One day, I will go to a World Games.' And, I'm almost there."

Schoonmaker has noticed an uncanny work ethic with Charlie when it comes to powerlifting. Every Monday, he sees coach J.P. Price at Strong Barbell Club in North Kansas City. He lifts at his home every Wednesday and Friday.

"During COVID, Charlie continued," she said. "He just never stopped."

Charlie's drive to compete is ever present as well. In fact, he helped organize a powerlifting meet on Sunday, November 13 - the weekend before he leaves for San Antonio for the&nbsp;Team USA trials.

With the help of Price and Liz Strain at&nbsp;Strong Barbell Club, lifters from both Missouri and Kansas Special Olympics came together last year for a 'Border War' meet, and it's expected to be bigger this year with more competitors.

Phillips has not only forged a path for himself to compete and do what he loves, but his story and his drive is making that path possible for other Special Olympians also.

"He's opening more doors and introducing more people to Special Olympics as volunteers," Schoonmaker said. "Seeing them as athletes and seeing that they're serious just like the other athletes out there in powerlifting."

Savannah man preparing to compete at Special Olympics USA team trials

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce has heard misconceptions about the job market in St. Joseph, but officials say those are unfounded. &nbsp;

Chamber President and CEO Natalie Redmond says there is a number of good jobs in St. Joseph with an average wage of $52,754. &nbsp;

"That actually compares, we're seventh across the state, that puts us better than areas like Springfield and Joplin a lot of same size or a little bit bigger communities," Redmond tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr. "Really the only counties that were higher than us were the counties in major metropolitan areas like St. Louis and Kansas City&nbsp;

Redmond says a lot of the reason she believes St. Joseph is doing well is because of the number of skilled manufacturing jobs available.&nbsp;

Redmond says many people may not understand that manufacturing jobs are nothing like what they used to be. &nbsp;

"Things that make it a lot easier where you're not doing heavy lifting, you’re problem solving, you're maybe using some robotics, or computer skills I mean the manufacturing of today is way different than the manufacturing of 30 or 40 years ago," Redmond explains. "And having manufacturing in your community is so vital to impact the local economy."&nbsp;

Redmond says manufacturing is one of the most vital sectors in helping the economy with how much it contributes to small business.&nbsp; She says it's also great because it's an industry that's largely recession proof.&nbsp;

"It boded us well in 2008 and it boded us well during COVID because you have to have pharmaceuticals and you have to have transportation with places like Altec, you have to have different food so we have a lot of food manufacturers and pet food manufacturers and those are all items that people have to have," Redmond says. "So, you're going to be resilient in a time where other folks jobs might be on the line."&nbsp;

Redmond says many of those manufacturing jobs are also high paying jobs, contributing to that seventh place starting wage ranking.&nbsp;

Missouri man injured after rear-end crash

On Monday, police arrested 33-year-old&nbsp;Jeremiah E. Crouch of Atchison&nbsp; on a Community Corrections detain order, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Earlier this month, police arrested him on a requested charge of domestic battery for the second time in five years.&nbsp;

He has three previous convictions for domestic battery; recklessly causing bodily harm and had been out of prison since March of 2020, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. Online jail records show he has a history of arrests in Atchison County dating to 2007.&nbsp;

He posted bond and is not currently in custody.

Kansas man with a history of violent crime arrested again

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley
acknowledges that some advocates of free speech care more about their political
agenda that the actual concept of free speech.

Turley, this year’s Convocation on Critical Issues speaker at
Missouri Western State University, says that’s the nature of those who support
free speech.

“As free speech advocates, we’re used to having unreliable
allies,” Turley tells the news media prior to his speech. “Our allies always
tend to be in the minority. When you’re in the minority, it’s when you get
sensitive about free speech.”

Turley, also a legal analyst for Fox News, titled his speech “The
Rise and Fall of Free Speech." He spoke Tuesday at the 28th annual
R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues on the St. Joseph campus.

Turley tells media members he hopes this isn’t the fall
of free speech in the country, but he does see troubling trends in society. Turley says American
society seems to have become unmoored from the rights that define the United
States, free speech being the most important. Turley asserts all the other
rights Americans hold dear hinge on free speech.

A promising trend Turley sees is in the courts, which have
consistently struck down speech codes as a violation of the First Amendment.
The discouraging trend Turley sees is on college campuses.

Once bastions of free speech, universities have become
campuses of intolerance, according to Turley. Free speech, Turley says, is targeted
in times of rage, in times of tension. Turley says that universities once upheld the rights of free speech against those who wanted to
silence certain voices.

“But there came a tipping point at universities about 20 years
ago where suddenly we saw a pronounced decline in conservative and libertarian
faculty,” Turley says. “Now, it’s the rule. A recent study came out that showed
that Harvard’s faculty self-identifies; 83% self-identify as liberal or very
liberal.”

And, he says that lack of diversity drives the current campus
intolerance.

He says it has had a noticeable effect. Turley says some
faculty now are cowered into silence, because they worry if they speak their mind,
it will ruin their careers.

“If you’re tagged in one of these cancel campaigns, they will
take everything that matters to an intellectual life away from you,” Turley
says. “They’ll bar you from conferences. They’ll bar you, effectively, from
publications. If you get tagged in one of those campaigns, you become radioactive.”

Turley says conservative faculty and conservative students
must be willing to take the risk and speak up or free speech will die.

Free speech is in danger, according to MWSU Convocation speaker

Continued growth in enrollment at Northwest Missouri State University has made history.&nbsp;

For the first time in the history of the university, Northwest has passed 8,000 enrolled students on the Maryville campus. &nbsp;

Assistant Vice President of Admissions Allison Hoffmann says the university is thrilled to see 8,505 students enrolled, a rise of 8.1%.&nbsp;

"It's really the hard work of a lot of teams and a lot of units here at the institution," Hoffmann tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. "It's aligned with our strategic plan; we really try to work together to hit the institution's enrollment goals."&nbsp;

Hoffman says that the number of 8,505 shows growth in several student categories.&nbsp;

"We've seen significant growth in our graduate enrollment, also in our international enrollment, and then we are pleased that our first-time transfer students and our first-time freshman students were also up this year compared to this time last year," Hoffmann says. &nbsp;

The growth in enrollment this year also marks five consecutive years of overall growth.&nbsp; Despite that number though, Hoffmann says Northwest continues looking for ways to improve.&nbsp;

Hoffmann says the continued rise in enrollment is due to Northwest continuing to follow its strategy.&nbsp;

"We have been strategic about our graduate programming, especially our graduate online programming, and the programs that are available," Hoffmann explains. "We know many of our graduate students are in different locations and so the online flexible learning is a great option for our graduate students."&nbsp;

And offline, Hoffmann says she is also pleased with the number of new on campus students&nbsp;

"So, those are things that we've worked hard over the years to really see those numbers where they are today," &nbsp;

Hoffmann says the continued growth is not something that was accomplished overnight but it took years of planning to have this success. &nbsp;

Hoffmann says the goal every semester is to see an increase in enrollment&nbsp;

"You know, I think we continue to evaluate and ensure looking at our numbers how we can continue to work to meet those both on campus and online," Hoffmann explains. "So, I think it's difficult to say how high we would want those numbers to go, I think for us it's about finding the right fit as an institution as well. and so, we continue to keep that a priority."&nbsp;

Northwest is continuing to search for ways to get students back on campus still.&nbsp; Despite the rise in admission, on campus admission saw a six percent decline.&nbsp;

"It's aligned with our strategic plan; we really try to work together to hit the institution's enrollment goals."&nbsp;Hoffman says that the number of 8,505 shows growth in several student categories.&nbsp;"We've seen significant growth in our graduate enrollment, also in our international enrollment, and then we are pleased that our first-time transfer students and our first-time freshman students were also up this year compared to this time last year," Hoffmann says. &nbsp;The growth in enrollment this year also marks five consecutive years of overall growth.&nbsp; Despite that number though, Hoffmann says Northwest continues looking for ways to improve.&nbsp;Hoffmann says the continued rise in enrollment is due to Northwest continuing to follow its strategy.&nbsp;"We have been strategic about our graduate programming, especially our graduate online programming, and the programs that are available," Hoffmann explains. "We know many of our graduate students are in different locations and so the online flexible learning is a great option for our graduate students."&nbsp;And offline, Hoffmann says she is also pleased with the number of new on campus students&nbsp;"So, those are things that we've worked hard over the years to really see those numbers where they are today," &nbsp;Hoffmann says the continued growth is not something that was accomplished overnight but it took years of planning to have this success. &nbsp;Hoffmann says the goal every semester is to see an increase in enrollment&nbsp;"You know, I think we continue to evaluate and ensure looking at our numbers how we can continue to work to meet those both on campus and online," Hoffmann explains. "So, I think it's difficult to say how high we would want those numbers to go, I think for us it's about finding the right fit as an institution as well. and so, we continue to keep that a priority."&nbsp;Northwest is continuing to search for ways to get students back on campus still.&nbsp; Despite the rise in admission, on campus admission saw a six percent decline.&nbsp;

NWMSU fifth straight year of growth takes enrollment beyond 8,000

St. Joseph will be looking for a new police chief,
soon.

Chief Chris Connally retires at the end of this
week. Commander Dave Hart takes over on an interim basis.

City Manager Bryan Carter says the search for
Connally’s replacement hasn’t started yet.

“Police Chief is one of the highest profile, if
not the highest profile, position in the community,” Carter says. “So, it’s
something that’s going to be important. We’re going to have a lot of feedback
on that selection process as it goes forward.”

Carter says he will not rush the search to
replace Connally, who has served as chief since 2006.

“Chief Connally has been at it for nearly 17
years,” Carter says. “So, it’s a decade-and-a-half of big shoes to fill.
Certainly wishing him the best as he goes on, but hate losing him.”

Carter points out Connally even helped out during
times the city looked for a new city manager, twice serving as interim city
manager.

“Chief Connally took the lead in the city on the
administrative side and got us through until we were able to get a new city
manager hired.”

Carter says he plans to take time in choosing a
replacement. Carter says he needs to consider how best to go about filling the
position. He says the city will spend more time defining the process before
actually beginning the search. 

“And, defining the process, we’re probably
looking at a few weeks. I want to get some input before we actually initiate
that, the actual search process,” Carter says. “In the meantime, we’re going to
have current Commander, Dave Hart, as interim police chief. I’ve work with Commander
Hart for a number of years and am confident he’ll do an excellent job in that
role.”
