Missouri defense dominate again in shutout win over Buffalo

For the first time since 1935, the #9 Missouri Tigers opened the college football season with back to back shutouts, defeating the Buffalo Bulls 38-0 in Columbia.&nbsp;

After only getting a field goal in the first quarter, a 51 yarder from freshman Blake Craig, the Tigers opened up the scoring in the second quarter.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rushing touchdowns from Luther Burden III and Brady Cook extended the Tigers lead to 17-0.&nbsp; Near the end of the quarter, Cook would break off another run, high stepping over a defender and rumbling down the field before eventually doing a barrel roll into the endzone.&nbsp; Missouri led 24-0 at the halftime break.&nbsp;

The Tigers would continue to dominate the run game in the second half, getting rushing touchdowns from Nate Noel and Jamal Robers in the third and fourth quarters respectively.&nbsp;

Missouri's offense put together 518 total yards, 263 through the air and 255 on the ground, while the defense allowed 169 total yards to Buffalo. Cook was 28 of 36 through the air for 228 yards with one interception, while rushing for 62 yards and two touchdowns

Missouri will have a third straight home game in week three, welcoming Boston College to Columbia.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 11:45 am on Saturday, September 14th with the game airing on SEC Network.&nbsp;

Northwest off to 0-2 start for first time since '95, falling to UNK

It's the first time since 1995 that the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats are off to an 0-2 start after falling to the University of Nebraska Kearney 21-14 on Saturday in Kearney, Nebraska.&nbsp;

The Bearcats did take the first lead of the game when quarterback Chris Ruhnke connected with Eric Richardson on a 10 yard touchdown pass.&nbsp; It was an eight play, 72 yard drive, where Ruhnke connected with four different receivers.&nbsp;

The Lopers would even the score in the quarter when former Missouri Western quarterback Reagan Jones found&nbsp;Zane Schawang for a 26 yard touchdown pass with just under three minutes remaining in the first.&nbsp;

On the final play of the first quarter Northwest would retake the lead with a 23 yard passing touchdown between Ruhnke and Zach Atkins.&nbsp; A 41 yard shovel pass from Ruhnke to Tank Young got the Bearcat drive going.&nbsp;

The Bearcats would look to extend their lead near the end of the half, however UNK's David Lilly would force a fumble from Atkins after a catch at midfield, and on the ensuing drive Jones would scramble in for a two yard touchdown, and Northwest and Nebraska Kearney would end the half tied at 14.&nbsp;

The lone score of the second half would be from Jones again, on yet another rush, this time scoring from 12 yards out.&nbsp; The Bearcat offense would sputter in the second half, only managing 88 yards of offense, most of those coming on the Bearcats final drive, a 73 yard drive that ended with an interception.&nbsp;

Ruhnke was 25 of 38 on the day for 311 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.&nbsp;Atkins led the receivers with four receptions for 73 yards.

The Bearcats will return to Maryville in week three to host the Fort Hays State Tigers for Military Appreciation Day.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 6pm on Saturday.&nbsp;

Watson hits career long field goal, but Western drops MIAA opener

The Missouri Western Griffons saw a five game winning streak against Fort Hays snapped, falling to the Tigers 30-16 in their MIAA opener at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, Kansas on Saturday.&nbsp;

With the loss, the Griffons record against Fort Hays fell to&nbsp; 19-13-1.

The Tigers struck first on the opening drive with a four play 63 yard drive that took just under two minutes, a 16 yard touchdown pass from Jack Dawson to Jabri Lewis, giving Fort Hays the early advantage.&nbsp;

After a missed 48 yard field goal on the Tigers next drive, the Griffons would take advantage and drive the field to tie up the game, an 18 yard touchdown pass from Kane Donovan to Jake Berrey knotting the game at 7-7.&nbsp;

A 10 play 66 yard drive from Fort Hays State would help give the Tigers the lead to end the first quarter, Carson Arndt hitting a 19 yard field goal.&nbsp; But it was the Griffons that would take the lead into halftime, tight end Michael Haggerty getting a 17 yard touchdown pass from transfer quarterback Branden Berwald, giving Missouri Western a 13-10 halftime lead, after Cody Watson missed the extra point.&nbsp;

Fort Hays would tie the game back up to start the second half, Arndt knocking through a 30 yard field goal, and would take the lead on their next offensive drive again thanks to the leg of Arndt from 35 yards out this time.&nbsp;

The Tigers would break off a big 42 yard run to end the third quarter, Shane Watts finding paydirt to put Fort Hays State up 23-13 heading into the final quarter.&nbsp;

The lone score of the fourth quarter for the Griffons would come from Watson, hitting a new career high as he would hit a 48 yard field goal.&nbsp; Fort Hays final score was a one yard rushing touchdown by Caleb Heavner.&nbsp;

While Donovan started the game, Berwald was the leading passer going 15 for 28 through the air with 120 yards and one touchdown, also rushing 11 times for 88 yards.&nbsp; Brandon Hall rushed 10 times for 75 yards.&nbsp; Berrey was the leading receiver with four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

Missouri Western will have their first home game in week three, welcoming Missouri Southern into Spratt Memorial Stadium in St. Joseph.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 6pm on Saturday.&nbsp;

Explosive start ignites Ravens in home opener against William Penn

The #19 Benedictine Ravens exploded to a big first half lead and dominated William Penn 45-27 in their home opener at Larry Wilcox Stadium in Atchison.&nbsp;

The Ravens wasted no time getting off to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.&nbsp; Dalton Witherspoon took the opening kickoff back 83 yards for a score and on the very next drive by William Penn, Jahvi Bloomquist would pick off Sterling Ramsey and take it 26 yards for a defensive touchdown.&nbsp;

A passing touchdown from Ravens quarterback Jackson Dooley to Joseph Lagafuaina and a rushing touchdown from Dooley would extend the lead to 28-0 before William Penn would finally answer with a passing touchdown from Ramsey to&nbsp;Lukas Hamilton.

Benedictine's Harry Balke would hit a 24 yard field goal with 1:02 remaining in the first half, but William Penn would need just 31 seconds and four plays to score, Ramsey throwing a 7 yard touchdown to&nbsp;Keithon Davis, the Ravens led 31-13 at halftime.&nbsp;

Benedictine and William Penn would trade blows in the second half, the Ravens scoring first in the third quarter Dooley connecting with Jacob Gathright on a 12 yard touchdown.&nbsp; Four plays later Ramsey would find&nbsp;Kevon Bickham on a 59 yard touchdown pass.&nbsp;

After Bloomquist got his second interception of the game in the fourth quarter, the Ravens would need just two plays to score again, Dooley finding&nbsp;Tyler Watson this time on a 28 yard passing score. A 13 play drive from William Penn would end with a six yard passing touchdown from&nbsp; Connor Neville to&nbsp;Alexander Price

The Ravens defense was huge in the win with six total takeaways, one fumble recovery and five interceptions.&nbsp; Dooley was 29 of 39 through the air for 338 yards and three touchdowns.&nbsp; Gathright, the leading receiver had eight catches for 82 yards.

Benedictine is now 2-0 on the season but have a challenge ahead of them as they host #5 Grandview in week three.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 1pm on Saturday.

K State survives early scare from Tulane

The #17 Kansas State Wildcat offense started off slow, but a dominant second half helped the Wildcats improve to 2-0 to start the season, beating Tulane 34-27 at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans.&nbsp;

After Kansas State opened the scoring in the game with a field goal, Tulane would answer with a touchdown with 49 seconds remaining, a three yard rushing score from Makhi Hughes. The Wave would add another touchdown in the second quarter, a 36 yard passing touchdown from Darian Mensah to Alex Bauman.&nbsp;

The Wildcats would draw within one score on a seven yard pass from Avery Johnson to tight end Will Swanson who made a diving catch in the endzone.&nbsp; But two more Tulane field goals would put the Wave up 20-10 at the halftime break.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas State would start their second half rally in the third quarter with a field goal to get back within a touchdown. One drive later the Wildcats would tie the game up, Johnson finding running back DJ Giddens for a 45 yard touchdown pass.&nbsp;

Tulane would take the lead back to start the fourth quarter, Mensah and Bauman connecting again this time on a 13 yard score, but Kansas State would again tie the game with a rushing score from Dylan Edwards, going in on a 13 yard run.&nbsp;

It was the Wildcats defense that came up big at the end of the game, Kansas State taking the lead on a 60 yard fumble return by Jack Fabris.&nbsp; After both teams exchanged punts, the defense stood tall again, VJ Payne picking off Mensah in the endzone, allowing the Wildcats to kneel out the remaining time.&nbsp;

Johnson was 15 of 23 through the air for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Giddens was both the leading rusher and receiver, rushing 19 times for 114 yards and catching four passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

#17 Kansas State will face a Top 25 battle in week three as they welcome #20 Arizona to Manhattan on Friday.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 7pm and the game will air on Fox.

Big first half is all Nebraska needs to down Colorado

The Nebraska Cornhuskers only needed the first half to score the points they needed to down the Colorado Buffaloes in Lincoln on Saturday, earning a 28-10 win, starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2016.

The Cornhuskers took the lead early in the first quarter on a 12 yard touchdown run from Dante Dowdell with 10:34 left in the quarter.&nbsp; Five minutes later the Nebraska defense would get on the board, a seven yard interception return from Tommi Hill.&nbsp;

Midway through the second quarter, Dowdell would push his way into the endzone for his second score of the game from one yard out.&nbsp; Later in the quarter true freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola found running back Rahmir Johnson for an 18 yard touchdown.&nbsp;

Colorado would have an opportunity to get on the board in the first half, but kicker Jace Feely would miss a 61 yard field goal attempt, leaving Nebraska up 28-0 at the end of the half.&nbsp;

The Buffaloes finally broke into the score column in the third quarter, a 27 yard field goal from Alejandro Mata.&nbsp; Quarterback Shedeur Sanders would find LaJohnay Wester in the endzone in the fourth quarter for the only Colorado touchdown.&nbsp;

Raiola was again efficient in his second career game going 23 for 30 with 185 yards passing and one touchdown. Dowdell rushed 11 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson was the leading receiver with eight catches for 74 yards.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Nebraska will stay home in week three for a matchup with Northern Iowa. Kickoff will be at 6:30 on Saturday with the game airing on the Big Ten Network.&nbsp;

Turnovers plague Jayhawks in upset loss to the Fighting Illini

Four turnovers were too much to overcome for the #19 Kansas Jayhawks on the road in Champaign, Illinois, falling to the Illinois Fighting Illini 23-17 on Saturday.&nbsp;

After a David Olano field goal in the first quarter but the Fighting Illini ahead, the Jayhawks did go on to take the lead in the second quarter, a field goal from Tabor Allen and a touchdown pass from Jalon Daniels to Luke Grimm giving Kansas a 10-3 lead.&nbsp;

But after Olano converted a field goal, the Illini defense would get their second interception of the game off Daniels, this one being taken 30 yards to the endzone to take a 13-10 lead going into halftime.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks would take the lead back out of the break, Daniels throwing his second touchdown of the game on a 13 yard pass to Lawrence Arnold. But the fourth quarter would be all Illinois.&nbsp;

Back to back punts started the fourth quarter before the Fighting Illini would take the lead back on a one yard touchdown run from&nbsp;Kaden Feagin.&nbsp; One drive later Olano would knock in his third field goal of the game, this time from 43 yards, with 58 seconds left for a Jayhawks drive.&nbsp;

Kansas would drive into Illinois territory before calling a timeout with four seconds remaining.&nbsp; Daniels would be sacked by Xavier Scott, fumbling in the process, where Alec Bryant would recover the ball

Daniels was 18 of 32 through the air for 141 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.&nbsp; Devin Neal was the leading rusher going 14 carries for 101 yards.&nbsp; Grimm caught nine passes for 40 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks will be back at Children's Mercy Park on Friday, hosting UNLV in week three.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 6pm and the game will air on ESPN.

Vitaetom, a Belgium company specializing in organic greenhouse-grown vegetables, recently introduced a new organic variety of tomatoes called Ruby Red. This deep red plum tomato is a first in the organic market, and its cultivation earned Koen Van Hauteghem, the third-generation owner of Vitaetom, a nomination for the BioVLAM 2024 award. HortiDaily reports adapting the Ruby Red to organic farming was challenging due to differences in planting methods and soil requirements compared to conventional practices. 

The Ruby Reds are grown directly in the soil within heated greenhouses, which required adjustments in planting density and fertilization methods to ensure the best growth. Despite the challenges, Van Hauteghem is optimistic about the tomato's potential, noting its excellent flavor and shelf life, which helps reduce food waste. The first harvest has been well-received, leading to plans for expanding the cultivation area significantly next year.

New organic tomato shows promise

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced more than $7.3 billion in financing for rural electric cooperatives to build clean energy for rural communities through the Empowering Rural America (New ERA) program. Speaking in Wisconsin, Vilsack said the 16 initiatives announced Thursday will leverage private investments of more than $29 billion to build more than 10 gigawatts of clean energy for rural communities across the country. He added the programs will collectively reduce and avoid at least 43.7 million tons of greenhouse gases annually. 

“Under the Biden-Harris Administration, we are supporting a more prosperous future for rural communities by speeding up the transition to clean energy while at the same time keeping monthly bills low and investing in the American workforce with new jobs and apprenticeships,” said Secretary Vilsack. “One in five rural Americans will benefit from these clean energy investments, thanks to partnerships with rural electric cooperatives like Dairyland. Put simply, this is rural power, for rural America.”

USDA announces $7 billion in rural clean energy initiatives

An emergency order is in effect through September 13 due to wildfires in Wyoming. Under this order, certain requirements are waived pertaining to operating time as well as the transportation of oversized or overweight loads of livestock and livestock feed. Wildfires have burned over 100,000 acres in Wyoming, while low humidity and high temperatures make it worse. 

“Hazardous conditions created a shortage of livestock feed in Wyoming, including depleted pasture grass and natural feed supplies in many parts of the state resulting in inadequate livestock forage,” the order says. “Easing restrictions to transport loads of livestock and livestock feed is necessary to provide assistance to the fire-stricken areas.” However, livestock feed and livestock transportation companies operating under Wyoming’s wildfire emergency order shall not require or allow any fatigued driver to operate a vehicle. A driver who informs their carrier they need rest should be given adequate rest before returning to work.

Farmland values in states like Illinois remain sold. Central and Southern Illinois land values increased 7.49 percent on average from last year. That’s according to a 2024 study of 22 benchmark farms by the Farm Credit Illinois appraisal team. Eighteen of the 22 benchmark farms increased in value, and four remained unchanged. Results across all land classes showed considerable variation, reinforcing that agricultural real estate is a location-specific asset. 

When considering the individual benchmark values, the average year-over-year percentage changes across the four land classes ranged from 3.6 to 14.05 percent. “Farmland values remain strong despite higher interest rates and lower commodity prices,” says Kent Reid, Farm Credit Illinois Chief Appraiser. “Values remain consistent with the peaks set in 2023 due to constant demand for Illinois farmland coupled with limited supply of farms.” Interest rates, higher cash rents, and lower commodity prices could affect land values in the coming year.

Farmland values remain strong

Three of California’s dairy farms report cattle infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Wisconsin State Farmer Dot Com says that makes the nation’s top milk-producing state the 14th in the nation to report bird flu in cattle. More than 190 herds have been infected across the nation since March. Federal data says the infections also include 13 dairy and poultry farm workers. The California Department of Food and Agriculture issued a statement saying that no human cases have been confirmed in the state. 

The infected herds are in California’s Central Valley Region and began showing symptoms on August 25. “It’s a tough time for those dairy farmers given the economic challenges they face,” says Karen Ross, California’s Secretary of Agriculture. “We’re approaching this with the utmost urgency and the infected cattle have been quarantined.” Sick cattle are isolated and treated at their farms, while healthy cows are cleared to continue milking.&nbsp;

HPAI spreads to three California dairy herds

University of Missouri researchers are working to develop the first-ever vaccine proven to protect cattle from a devastating tick-borne disease called bovine anaplasmosis. The research is vital to a state like Missouri, which has a $1.6 billion cattle industry. Bovine anaplasmosis infects the red blood cells of cattle and causes hundreds of millions in economic losses nationwide every year and almost $1 billion in worldwide losses.

 Roman Ganta, a University of Missouri researcher, led the study that created the new vaccine. The work involves modifying the pathogen that causes anaplasmosis in a lab. By deleting a specific gene and injecting the modified pathogen into cattle, the vaccinated cattle were successfully immunized against the disease. “I often receive calls from cattle producers who are excited about our research and want to know how soon they can get the vaccine,” Ganta says. “There is currently no widely available effective vaccine against the disease.”

Missouri researchers working on protecting cattle from tick diseases

The Iowa Utilities Commission has found that Summit Carbon Solutions has substantially complied with the requirements of a June 25 order regarding the company’s application for a hazardous liquid pipeline permit. Last week, the IUC issued the permit. The order doesn’t modify the conditions Summit Carbon must establish in order to start construction. On June 25, 2024 the IUC issued its final decision and order regarding Summit Carbon’s petition for a hazardous liquid pipeline permit. 

As a part of its decision, the Commission required Summit Carbon to make several compliance filings with the IUC. Summit Carbon filed the compliance filings required by the IUC on August 5. The filings included revised petition exhibits. The pipeline will cross over 2,000 miles in five states, including 70 miles in Iowa. In planning the pipeline, Summit partnered with 57 ethanol plants and signed voluntary easement agreements with 75 percent of Iowa’s landowners along the route.

Iowa utilities issues pipeline permit

The University of Missouri’s Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute released its 2024 Baseline Update for U.S. agricultural markets. Increased supplies, a strong dollar, and several other factors have caused prices for multiple agricultural commodities to fall sharply from their 2022 peak levels. In the absence of new shocks to the weather, the macro-economy, or policy, projected prices will generally remain near current levels for the next five years. 

Some of the key results in the update include increased acreage and large yields that will mean a record 2024 U.S. soybean crop. Despite a significant jump in crush and a rebound in exports, end-of-year stocks will increase sharply. Record yield will result in the second consecutive 15 billion bushel corn crop this year. Given the projected reduction in prices for a broad range of crops and moderating production costs, there’s little incentive to sharply change crop acreage allocation in 2025.

FAPRI updates baseline for U.S. ag markets

Members of the Mid Buchanan and DeKalb FFA Chapters joined more than 725 FFA members and agricultural leaders at the Missouri State Fair on Tuesday, August 13, for the Missouri State FFA Food Insecurity Day of Service. The event is held in conjunction with the Missouri Farmers Care Foundation Drive to Feed Kids, a year-long effort to stand in the gap for the one in seven Missouri children facing food insecurity. During the eighth annual Day of Service, FFA members from 88 chapters joined agricultural leaders to pack family-sized portions of single dish meals to help neighbors in need. Together, members packed 193,084 meals for food insecure Missouri families.

In addition to meals packed by FFA members, 626 pounds of fresh produce were donated from award-winning exhibits at the Missouri FFA building. Through the Missouri Farmers Care Food

Drive $2 Tuesday at the Fair, FFA member volunteers collected food and monetary donations from fairgoers to provide more than 49,840 meals. In addition to the activities at the Missouri State Fair, Missouri FFA members statewide participated in the Drive to Feed Kids earlier this year through the Missouri Farmers Care 4-H and FFA Mini Grant Program. Between January and May, eleven chapters used matching grant resources to provide over 15,000 meals in their communities.

Mid Buchanan and DeKalb FFA chapters help feed Missourians

A federal judge blocked the U.S. Labor Department from enforcing a rule in 17 states that would prevent agricultural employers from retaliating against migrant workers with H-2A visas for joining labor unions. Employers also couldn’t retaliate for workers organizing against wage theft, trafficking, and other abuses. Courthouse News says the judge sided with states in a lawsuit against the Labor Department and granted a preliminary injunction. He ruled the regulation would unconstitutionally give foreign agricultural workers rights that Congress never wanted to provide. 

Judge blocks rule allowing farmworkers to join unions

NODAWAY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 11a.m. Saturday in Nodaway County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Ford passenger vehicle pulling a trailer and driven by Douglas M. Chesnut, 66, Hopkins, was northbound on U.S. 71 one half mile north of Maryville.&nbsp;

A couch blew off the Ford's towed unit and struck a southbound 2018 Lexus driven by Catherine M. Riley, 73, Lennox, Iowa.

Nodaway County EMS transported a passenger in the Lexus William D. Riley, 76, Lennox, Iowa, to Mosaic in Maryville. There were not other injuries reported. All three were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Man injured after couch strikes vehicle on NW Missouri highway

ANDREW COOUNtY —One person was injured in an accident just after 12:30p.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Chevy Equinox driven by Grace E. Brewer, 23, Wathena, Kansas , was on the Interstate 29 exit ramp to Business 71. The Chevy pulled across Business 71 into the path of a northbound 2008 Toyota Avalon driven by Alaina P. Akins, 19, Savannah.&nbsp; The Toyota struck the Chevy.

A private vehicle transported Akins to Mosaic Life Care. Brewer was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the MSHP.

Mo. teen injured after 2-vehicle Andrew County crash

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a chase and crash.

Just after 1:30a.m. Aug. 29,&nbsp; sheriff's deputies responded to a vehicle chase in progress that initiated in the city of Horton, according to Sheriff John Merchant.

. The suspect vehicle left Horton northbound on U.S. 73 Highway at a high rate of speed.&nbsp; A Brown County deputy made contact with the vehicle near US 73 and 210.&nbsp; The vehicle made it's way into Hiawatha and the driver lost control near Farm and Home where Horton and Hiawatha Police as well as Brown County sheriff's deputies located the suspect later identified as 24-year-old Montez Rodriguez of Independence, Missouri who&nbsp; ran into a tree line.&nbsp; He was ultimately arrested on Horton police department charges and is not longer in custody.

Missouri man caught hiding in trees after Kansas chase, crash

A Cole County Circuit Court judge rejected an attempt to invalidate an initiative petition on sports betting Friday, allowing voters to decide whether to enshrine sports wagering in Missouri’s Constitution on the November ballot.

“Lawsuits seeking to remove an initiative petition from the ballot after it has been certified as sufficient by the secretary (of state) are highly disfavored,” Judge Daniel Green wrote&nbsp;<a href="https://www.courts.mo.gov/fv/c/Judgment.PDF?courtCode=19&amp;di=3287114" target="_blank">in his ruling</a>, quoting from another case that he must rule with “restraint, trepidation and a healthy suspicion of the partisan that would use the judiciary to prevent the initiative process from taking its course.”

Green reviewed lists of petition signatures plaintiffs submitted to allege that the amendment did not meet the minimum threshold in Missouri’s 1st congressional district. The evidence included 95 signatures that plaintiffs called “disqualified voters.”

Green, in his ruling, said the evidence did not show that the voters were ineligible when they signed the petition. Without these 95 signatures thrown out, the petition meets minimum qualifications.

Beyond that, plaintiffs’ argument failed to convince Green that the Missouri Secretary of State incorrectly certified the signatures.

In an argument led by Marc Ellinger — a seasoned Jefferson City attorney with experience representing Missouri gaming companies — plaintiffs took issue with the method the secretary used when calculating the number of votes needed in each district.

But, Green wrote, this calculation has been constant throughout all initiatives in 2022 and 2024 and was used by previous secretaries of state.&nbsp; The number was determined by multiplying the number of votes cast for governor in 2020 by 8%.

Ellinger said the number should be based on congressional district maps drawn after the 2020 election, but he “presented no evidence from which the court could determine what plaintiff’s target number should be,” Green wrote.

Should the threshold stand, Ellinger argued that there were a plethora of signatures that were improperly certified. For this, his expert witness was Kevin Oglesby, who manages National Political Consultants Inc and was hired to look at the signatures.

Oglesby received information from the secretary of state’s office to assess signatures, and his testimony was a large part of Thursday’s trial as he explained instances he deemed errors.

Local election authorities, which processed the petition for the secretary of state, had more information when reviewing signatures.

Green noted that plaintiffs “did not present evidence to qualify (Oglesby) as a handwriting expert.”

“Court did not find the testimony of the plaintiff’s witness to be credible or particularly helpful,” Green said in his judgment.

His ruling also dismissed a counter-claim by intervenors Winning for Missouri Education, the initiative’s campaign committee. The claim alleged that the committee, which has raised over $6.5 million to support the petition, is harmed by plaintiffs’ accusations

Green said there was no evidence presented on the matter, rendering it “moot.”

Winning for Missouri Education spokesman Jack Cardetti celebrated the victory Friday, focusing on the increased tax dollars that could go to public education if the initiative is approved.

“Today’s ruling, while expected, is nevertheless a big victory for Missourians, who overwhelmingly want to join the 38 other states that allow sports betting, so that we can provide tens of millions in permanent, dedicated funding each year to our public school,” he said. “For too many years, Missourians have watched as fans cross state lines to place sport bets, which deprives our Missouri public schools of much needed funding.”

Ellinger did not respond to a timely request for comment.

Area High School Football Scoreboard for September 6th, 2024

BUCHANAN COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Friday in Buchanan County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Chevy pickup driven by William T. White, 46, Helena, was northbound on U.S. 169 one mile north of St. Joseph. The pickup and a 2011 Chevy Tahoe driven by Yalena A. Olivares, 60, St. Joseph, who was turning southbound onto U.S. 169 from Woodbine Road collided head-on.

Buchanan County EMS transported both drivers to Mosaic Life Care. The MSHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.&nbsp;

On August 31, a sheriff's deputy was on routine patrol in the vicinity of US 75 Highway in rural Brown County stopped a vehicle for speeding, according to Sheriff John Merchant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While making contact with the driver, later identified as 45-year-old Christopher Carr of Elyria, Ohio, it was discovered he had an outstanding&nbsp; Michigan Warrant for Larceny.&nbsp;

 At the conclusion of the traffic stop, the deputies arrested Carr on a requested charge of Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

The passenger 29-year-old Laurie Carr of Elyria, Ohio was arrested on requested charges of Possesssion of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Michigan couple jailed in Kansas for drugs and a warrant

St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster has requested the Missouri
State Highway Patrol investigate an incident in which a young man shot himself
while riding with a St. Joseph police officer.

The St. Joseph Police Department reports that the officer
provided transportation for a 24-year-old man in a non-criminal matter shortly
before 10:30 Thursday night. Shortly after the ride began the man “severely
injured himself,” according to the department. The department says the officer
rushed the man to the Mosaic Life Care emergency room where he was treated for
a life-threatening injury.

The department reports the man is in critical condition.

Police Chief Luster asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s
Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the matter. The St. Joseph
Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation into the matter.

An annual adoption event will help get pets from a crowded animal shelter find their new homes.  

Friends of the Animal Shelter's Melanie Barnes says the third annual adoption event is a collaboration between Friends of the Animal Shelter, the St. Joseph Animal Shelter, and St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue 

"To pay for a lot of upfront spay and neuter, heartworm testing, leukemia and aids testing for cats, et cetera, pretty much vetting almost every pet we can possibly have, whether it be located at the shelter or in foster care that is adoptable, to have them ready to go and set up a huge adoption event,” Barnes tells KFEQ Hotline host Barry Birr.  

Barnes says with everything done pets will be ready during the adoption event for people to fill out paperwork and take their new friend home. 

Barnes says the large adoption event will give reduced adoption fees to potential pet owners 

"In the past I can tell you usually like it just depends on what we have the most of, if we have a lot of kittens maybe they’ll be like $1 or $10, or maybe adult dogs will be $10, something along those lines,” Barnes explains.  

During this year's event, there will be $25 fees for dogs and puppies, $10 fees for kittens, and grown cats going for free.  

Barnes says during the event people will get a chance to know the animals more, and even take them on a walk if they'd like 

"Understand how it’s interacting with the other shelter dogs around, understand how it’s interacting with people or sometimes there’s even kids down there,” Barnes says. “So, you are getting a small glimpse into a little bit more of their personality and behaviors.” 

The event will take place from 1 to 6pm tomorrow at Civic Center Park in downtown St. Joseph.
