Velma Jane Mangelsdorf, 93, of Atchison, KS, passed away Monday January 29, 2024, at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS, surrounded by her family.
Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 2:30pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Greene officiating with burial following at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior 1:30pm to 2:30pm at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Atchison Library and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Velma was born February 7, 1930, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Robert and Frances (Nyhart) Chmidling. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1948. Velma worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone, Montgomery Ward, and JCPenney as a retail clerk retiring in 1985. She was a member of First Christian Church and enjoyed reading, doing yard work, taking care of her flowers, and playing cards.
Velma married Alfred Mangelsdorf on February 10, 1950, at the First Christian Church celebrating 73 years of marriage. Alfred preceded on January 10, 2023. Alfred and Velma had five children. During the time when the children were growing up, Velma enjoyed going to their various activities including being a cub scout den mother and being on the PTA committee. Velma also loved spending time with her numerous grandkids and great grandkids.
Survivors include two daughters, Susie Sutter, Silver Spring, MD, Debbie and Raymond Kane, Atchison, KS, two sons Rick and Kathy Mangelsdorf, Lawrence, KS, and Bill and Kelly Mangelsdorf, Leavenworth, KS, and daughter-in-law Diane Mangelsdorf, Tonganoxie, KS. Twelve grandchildren. sixteen great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. She was also preceded by both of her parents, a sister, Betty Huffman, a son, Robert Mangelsdorf, Sr., and a grandson, Robert Mangelsdorf, Jr.
