Donald Prohaska 1925 - 2025

Donald George Prohaska, of Atchison, Kansas, passed peacefully on March 29, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 22, 1925, the son of Martin and Mary (Vanderweide) Prohaska, and just celebrated his 100th birthday.

Don attended Union 3 School and was a graduate of Atchison High School. He and Alberta Miller were united in marriage on January 16, 1951. He was a lifelong member of St. Benedict Parish. Don had two great passions in life, farming and music. He loved farming and raising farm animals, especially cows. He was known for his peacocks, flowers and love for dogs. Don and his brother, LaVerne, played in the Prohaska Dance Band at venues within 100 miles of Atchison for many years. They loved providing music for numerous events and sometimes, even up to five nights a week.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-four years, Alberta Prohaska; four children, Mary (Gayle) Voth, Richard (Sharon) Prohaska, Larry (Nancy) Prohaska, Dan (Amy) Prohaska; eight grandchildren, Emily Prohaska, Fritz (Susan) Prohaska, Clare C. (Alex Bridges) Prohaska, Laura (Tyler) Darland, Alex Prohaska, Luke Prohaska, Clare A. Prohaska, Juliana Voth; and three great grandchildren, Hugo Bridges, Damian Darland and Elise Bridges.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Andy Prohaska and his brother, LaVerne Prohaska.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Church. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be prayed Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a visitation to follow at the church prior to mass.
