Gary Rodrick Lyon, 75, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2025.
He was born October 8, 1950 in Iowa. He grew up in Gladstone, Missouri, then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for three years.
He married Shelley Lou Stephens on February 14, 1983. They later divorced but remained friends.
After his military service, Gary earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in European History from Northwest Missouri State University.
He worked as a cataloguer at the Linda Hall Scientific Library in Kansas City, Missouri.
Gary was a passionate numismatist and philatelist, with vast collections of both coins and stamps.
He also loved his cats and dogs and enjoyed spending time with his pets.
Gary had a heart for people in pain and tried to help them however he could.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Gloria (Marchant) Lyon; and his children, Michelle and Sarah Lyon.
Survivors include his former wife, Shelley Lyon; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Natural Farewell under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association.
