MAYSVILLE - Senior Brock Steggall pitched a full game for Plattsburg, striking out nine and walking only one as the Tigers (27-8) defeated Maysville 7-2 in a Class 2 sectional game at Lakesite Country Club Monday.

Steggall, a State Fair Community College baseball signee, held the Wolverines scoreless through the first four innings and put Maysville down in order in the final two innings to secure the victory for Plattsburg.

"It's awesome," Steggall said on the victory. "I mean, we haven't (been to a quarterfinal) at our school in I think 13 years, getting this far. Being a part of that group, we're just out here having fun."

Offensively, Plattsburg got off to a strong start, scoring two runs on two hits and a walk in the top of the first inning. The Tigers added to that lead with two more runs in the second, sparked by a two-run RBI double by senior Kayden Carter.

The Tigers added insurance with another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Junior Wyatt Moran helped provide a spark at the plate, going for 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles. His pinch runner, sophomore Jayden Houser, touched home plate three times.

Steggall also scored three runs, reaching via walk three times. Lewis and Kayden Carter each had a pair of hits and RBIs.

Maysville's best threat came in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run RBI double by sophomore Coy Sobotka with two outs made it 7-2, though Sobotka was thrown out at third to end the threat.

The Wolverines (13-8) did what they could to limit Plattsburg from the mound. Maysville recorded 13 total strikeouts. Senior Zach Heintz even struck out the side in the top of the sixth, but Steggall finished the job, setting his last six batters faced down in order.

The Tigers finished with nine hits and drew nine walks, but they also stranded 11 runners on base.

"It wasn't our cleanest game," Plattsburg coach Beau Brown said. "But, we found a way to survive and advance."

Plattsburg, winners of seven straight, advance to state quarterfinals to face Windsor at Perkins Park on Wednesday at a time to be determined.

The Tigers, who will now play for their first trip to the Final Four since 2009, are an impressive 16-7 on their home field this year.

"I know our guys' goal was to get to Wednesday," Brown said. "That's goal number one. Now that we've gotten to Wednesday and we're at home, that's huge. That's really huge for us...it gives us an advantage for sure."

As for Steggall, he and the six other seniors hope to extend their final season together for as long as they can.

"To be a part of that group and do it one more time for my senior year and our other seniors, I think it's just going to be awesome," Steggall said. "We're looking forward to getting this next win, focusing on that game and then getting to Springfield."
