Federal government payments to American farmers could reach an all-time high of 55.4 billion dollars in 2026. According to reports, that would happen if USDA distributes the proposed eight billion dollars in Harvest Fuel Relief payments before the end of the year. The total would surpass the previous record of 45.6 billion dollars established in 2020. Government payments could account for nearly one-third of projected net farm income this year.
The additional assistance comes as farmers struggle with elevated diesel and fertilizer costs, partly driven by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. While farm organizations welcome the support, some economists and agricultural groups question whether government assistance addresses the underlying financial challenges facing producers. Payments are not expected to begin until late November or early December at the earliest.
