Vanetta Ruth Renz (Ferrel) 1931 - 2024

Posted May 15, 2024 1:32 AM

Vanetta was born in Kansas City, MO to Ruth Anthony and LeRoy VanMeter.

VanMeter, a Kansas City, MO police officer was killed in the line of duty when Vanetta was two years old. A relative of VanMeter suggested to Ruth, he knew a man he believed would make a wonderful father for little Vanetta. His name was Harrel Ferrel and he owned Ferrel Chevrolet car dealership in Platte City. Ruth and Harrel soon wed and Ferrel adopted Vanetta. Ferrel called his daughter “Sweet” and obviously the nickname stuck!

Sweet was married to Jimmy Renz for 60 years until his passing in 2015.

Sweet is survived by her three children Paul Ferrel Renz, Ruth Renz Gonterwitz, Sara Renz Snook (Steve), three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and dear friend and caretaker Simone Slutsky.

Sweet graduated from Platte County RIII High School and continued her education at Columbia College majoring in Home Economics and Horsemanship. Sweet and Jimmy were members of the Platte City Saddle Club and rode horses in many American Royal parades. Her Home Economics skills came in handy as she and beloved sister in law Joanne Renz prepared hearty meals for the many teenagers who worked in the family’s tobacco fields each year.

Sweet's Faith in God was very strong and she was an active lifelong member of the First Christian Church of Platte City. Sweet was a member of several bridge clubs over the years from which produced lasting friendships. She was a member of the Platte City Study Club, The Birthday Club, Volunteered at the Platte County Fair and served on the board of directors for former Wells Bank, now Connections Bank.

Per Sweet’s request, there will be no formal service. She will be cremated and her ashes scattered on the family farm. Cheers to Sweet for a beautiful life well lived!
