It took extra innings, but the St. Joseph Mustangs continued their undefeated start to the season, defeating the Carroll Merchants 7-4 in 11 innings in Carroll, Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Lafayette alum Ike Book singled to score shortstop Carson Schrack, who had doubled in the previous at bat.
The Merchants knotted the game up in the bottom of the third on a home run from first baseman Jordan Bradenburg. Carroll would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, a single from Aiden Cizek. Cizek would also score in the seventh on a wild pitch.
Trailing 3-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Mustangs would tie the game up, a two run home run from catcher Dom Felix tying the game before Savannah alum Truman Bodenhausen would pop out to end the inning.
After a scoreless tenth inning, the Mustangs would score four runs in the top of the eleventh, giving up just one run in the bottom half of the extra frame
Book led the way hitting, going 3 for 5 with one run and one RBI. Jaren Guck would earn the win out of the bullpen, pitching a scoreless inning and striking out two. Tim Teixeira earned his second save.
The Mustangs are now 4-0 on the young season and will stay on the road Monday, traveling to Chillicothe for another matchup with the Mudcats.
